That's your low opinion of Gilmour? That's too bad. I think Gilmour has made enough money that he doesn't have to prevent Waters from being associated with the Pink Floyd name. All Floyd fans know who Roger Waters is. It's sad what business can do to people even in their final years. Is Gilmour going to put Pink Floyd on his head stone and prevent Waters from doing it? What does that solve?

From Rolling Stone: When Waters poignantly reprised old songs like “Welcome to the Machine,” “Money” and “Another Brick in the Wall,” he wasn’t just doing the best of Floyd. Those were his songs, “the words and music of Roger Waters,” as Ladd declared at the end of an extended Floyd medley in the first half. The implication, of course, was unmistakable: anyone else out there playing these songs, claiming to be Floyd, is bogus.
“I would be terribly happy for you to like what I’m doing and to like what he’s doing,” Waters said sharply the next day, referring to Gilmour, “if it wasn’t for the fact that he was calling himself Pink Floyd. He isn’t. If one of us was going to be called Pink Floyd, it’s me.” Even the old props in the current Floyd show, Waters insisted, were originally his idea. “That’s my pig up there,” he said. “That’s my plane crashing.” He snickered and added, “It’s their dry ice.”
The “which one’s Pink?” debate has been a legal football kicked around by lawyers since last fall, when Waters sued Gilmour and Mason in an attempt to prevent them from using the name, claiming the group was “a spent force creatively.” (Rick Wright, who quietly left the group in 1980 after the Wall shows, has unofficially returned for the new Floyd album and tour.) Both camps, however, have now taken their cases to the people in a vindictive press war. Floyd fans are, in a sense, getting two state-of-the-art-rock shows and records - Waters’s Radio K.A.O.S., the Floyd’s Momentary Lapse of Reason - for the price of one band. But the price has been disastrously high. In their fight to determine who is the rightful heir to the Pink Floyd throne and the continuing fortune it’s worth, Waters, Gilmour and Mason have destroyed whatever personal friendship, band camaraderie and musical unity first bonded them

Not as simple as that mate. Don't forget Wright left Pink Floyd before Waters. There was something or someone creating a toxic atmosphere in the band. I think it goes deeper than the band members themselves. Perhaps the record label or managers working with them are somehow involved? Roger Waters is a lyrical genius as his lyrics come from a deeper place and reflect on him as a person with a pure soul and integrity who cares about the planet and the future of mankind. Polly Samson cannot replace Roger Waters even though there are one or two good songs written by her and Gilmour like "High Hopes'. I have a feeling that Polly is preventing them from reuniting, kinda acting like the bands Yoko Ono in a way. Likewise David Gilmour is a brilliant musician and one of the best guitarists of all time and I cannot imagine Pink Floyd without him. It's a shame they can't resolve their dispute and reunite.

And the reason was that Wright was going through a difficult time and was not contributing as much as he used to (which also makes it ironic because Waters now acts like he didn't need contributions from others and it was all him). These are very well known issues, Waters was difficult to wok with and was the source of tension. Bob Ezrin was the producer of the Wall, after the Wall he got invitations from both Waters and Gilmour to work on their solo albums at the same time...he chose Gilmour because according to him he was an all around nicer person to work with.

And what's more, for Roger to say that David thinks he IS Pink Floyd is very rich coming from the man that forced the band to make The Final Cut which is the only album in Floyd history to give credit to a single member: Waters himself. Waters also fired Rick Wright after the Wall who is not on the last Floyd album featuring Waters as well. There is more I could go into with the turmoil that Waters caused while trying to control the vision of Pink Floyd the band including him suing the remaining members to stop using the name and could be argued that Waters looked at HIMSELF as Pink Floyd. Though he did apologize for the lawsuit later, it sounds to me that this "meeting" he set up was more self-serving and I noticed he said "one of the things I asked for... I suggested that..." It sounds like Roger wanted back in but still had to have a level of control over things. His former bandmate(s) knowing him probably said, " Oh no! They hired David Gilmour and assumed he would take his rightful place behind Roger as the guitarist and occasional vocalist. What poor Mr. Waters was NOT ready for was the amazing creative force and vocal talent that Gilmour ended up becoming. By the time they got to Dark Side of the Moon, Gilmour's star had arrived. All of the popular hits on Dark Side, were sung by Gilmour and his soaring guitar solos had captured the World. After the same thing happened on Wish You Were Here, Waters had had enough. He wrestled control of the band from Gilmour and produced his concept album Animals. Granted. Rodger Waters was absolutely talented. He just had no desire to play 2nd fiddle to Gilmour. NOBODY gets that kind of wealth and fame without getting some kind of ego, that goes for the rest of hte band. As I've said, I know people with virtually NO accomplishments of any kind that still have an oversized ego. Considering what Roger has done musically and charitably, I don't think thats any more massive than anybody else. Waters tried to prevent Gilmour and Mason from using the Pink Floyd name going forward. Waters was the member who brought the ideas to the table for the band to work on....DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, The Wall, all concepts that Waters brought to the band. These are the albums the Pink Floyd name was built upon up until the split...this was their greatest achievement. When Waters left he felt that Pink Floyd was no longer a band....and when they reformed without him, yes, he tried to stop it. He didn't try to use the Pink Floyd name, professionally he moved on to solo work. But Gilmour/Mason continued using the name, but had no ideas that could possibly match what Waters brought to the table.
What came out of that legal battle was about the BUSINESS of Pink Floyd, the LABEL, the TRADEMARK. Gilmour and Mason used that name to take a different direction.....Waters didn't want to...he felt it should end. I think Gilmour/Mason led Floyd was much more about doing the covers that the fans expected, and putting out new material under that old name...they got the benefit of the Pink Floyd name.
Waters a "Pink Floyd cover band'??? Really??? He covers the songs HE WROTE. He doesn't cover Pink Floyd material he was not involved in....Gilmour/Mason cover songs Waters wrote....I think you have it backwards.
Now, Waters was a twat back then, and still to this day, but I think he was right. Here is a quote from him in 2013 about the matter...
"I was wrong. Of course I was ... It's one of the few times that the legal profession has taught me something. Because when I went to these chaps and said, "Listen, we're broke, this isn't Pink Floyd anymore," they went, "What do you mean? That's irrelevant, it is a label and it has commercial value. You can't say it's going to cease to exist ... you obviously don't understand English jurisprudence.""

David never named the band and he wrote next to none of the lyrics, most of the chords and melodies even are rogers. So David is being a dick using the law to hoard access to pink floyd away from roger 50 years after the fact. According to bunch of lawyers pink floyd may belong to david. , but in creativity reality, where the music came into existence, pink floyds as much rogers if not more than it is davids. David should acknowledge that. Roger did make mistake letting david get legal custody of pink floyd. Roger should have stayed in until he died, and just did all his solo work, but he short sighted and underestimated davids pettiniess.

    • @hrdwrd2570

I can see why he has tried to end Pink Floyd with him leaving.
He was there at the start and seems to have been the biggest creative force behind the band.
He thinks his input in the project was significant enough to justify Pink Floyd ending with him.
And I think it's fair, of course David was important too but the albums after The Final Cut kind of lack research and experimentation.
Dave Grohl created the Foo Fighters after Kurt passed, he didn't continue with Nirvana.
And judging by his political takes, Roger seems to have a very empathetic, sound and coherent worldview so I think his criticism here is not petty rambling.
Is it really important for people in general? No, but I think you cannot understand what it feels to have the name of your life's work used without your implication.
The music he created is what he will have left to humanity. We know he is the one who made it, but maybe he is too close to it to realize that the others keeping the name is not really a big deal.

Somewhat anti-social, prickly, tormented (or torment-ING?...), not really "people skills" folks, etc. That used to go more hand in hand with being an artist, it seems (including classical composers!) I'm not here to say if that's morally desirable or whatever. Just saying that we've come to a place where art itself seems to be judged only on whether the artist is a "good guy", which is nuts. I myself have always liked people who do something I like, even if they may be personal messes or unethical in some ways. I am a fan of people like Scott Weiland, Gene Simmons, Michael Jackson, Kid Rock, I even still like some R Kelly songs. The Wall and the Final Cut are perfect examples. They are supposed to be the same album. Gilmour and Ezrin condensed and streamlined "the Wall" and cut out a lot of fat. That fat Roger used to make "Final Cut". The most complex compositions on the Wall is where Gilmour's compositions come in. Young Lust, Comfortably Numb, Run like Hell were Gilmour compositions. Not one of those had lyrics written by Gilmour.

I would disagree, Amused to Death and Is This The Life We Really Want are better than anything Pink Floyd has done post Roger Leaving. They also sold very well. We are all entitled to our opinions chief. So is Roger when answering a question. Without Roger there would have never been a Pink Floyd. You really going to say Division Bell is good and holds up TDSOTM, Wish You Were Here or The Wall? Roger is just simply stating that he believes that a website called The Pink Floyd should also include him and what he’s up to. And fun fact, I’ve seen Roger live on three different tours with a ticket for the next This is Not a Drill tour in the past 15 years. When’s the last time you could catch a Pink Floyd tour? Roger to this day is keeping Pink Floyd’s music alive, viable, and able to experience. I’m pretty sure fans just love the music. There is no Us and Them when it comes to the music. I also enjoyed Gilmour’s tours even more, because I’m more partial to the MUSIC of PF.
The fact remains, Waters left Pink Floyd rather bitterly, and it’s more than a bit laughable that he now wants to use it as an advertising platform. Which begs the question, if his solo career is as resoundingly successful as you suggest (hint: it isn’t), why does he even care about the website of his former band? Allow me to suggest the answer: he wants the marketing clout that the brand name ‘Pink Floyd’ carries. If I was Gilmour, I would say the same thing. F-off! That’s not hating, it’s just reality.

They need to take their own lyrics to heart..especially roger. Honestly from all I've studied and watched over the years, there's a reason why roger was banned. He's Honestly thebasshole in the feud. Way before he left the Floyd he was the control freak and pretty much made Dave feel like just because he came after Syd that he has no say so David took that as being spat in his face for years so yea I don't blame him for the resentment he holds on roger but roger has no right. Roger's ego didn't want that and tried stopping him and lost so yea if you didn't want pink Floyd to continue then you shouldn't have any control over what Floyd is anymore. Period.

I love every single era Pink Floyd has produced. I also have loved each person's solo projects. I have no desire to badmouth any of them. My assumption is that since Roger left the band, the remaining members want to maintain control of their brand. If someone left a company, but attempted to keep access to their advertising or marketing department, there would be lawsuits. They didn't erase Roger from the past, they just don't allow him any control from outside of the band he chose to leave.
