    Machine direction and cross direction. When the paper is being made on the paper machine, the pulped fibres are shaken to make them spread out evenly. This causes them to line up somewhat in the direction of travel, i.e. machine direction, and the resulting sheets tear and cut and fold rather more easily along this axis. When cutting, folding or tearing in the other direction, across the grain, so to speak, one is working against the lay of the fibres, known as cross direction, and so these actions, especially tearing, are messier and more difficult. The tear or fold wants to travel in the machine direction and will wander that way and not be straight.
    It's been a long time since I was near a paper machine and I rather miss it!
    You do beautiful work and have inspired me to try basket weaving with newspaper. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience.
    Warmest best wishes,
    Katherine from Kent, England, UK

    Elena, I an very new to this craft. I have watched your videos over and over. They are very helpful. Thanks to you, I have not experienced many of the problems mentioned in other videos. Your English translations are great. I can now go back and watch your first videos and understand what you are saying. Thank you sooooo much for taking the time to make all of them.

    Dear Elena
    Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making your videos. I learnt to weave from you, and this month I won a national craft competition with a chair I wove from newspaper. I hope to use my knowledge to train others and help create job opportunities for people in South Africa. You can find a picture of the chair on the Khanyi Designs Facebook page. Spasiba Bolshoi!

    I came across you videos and am please to say I want very much to give this a try. I have made a few baskets of reeds but found them costly. Using newspaper that I recycle will be no cost to learn a new method of making a basket.
    Thanks for sharing Greetings from USA

    Elena, I would like to know what size needle, in millimetres, you use to roll the newspaper and the dimensions of the newspaper. I tried using 2.75mm and it seems the tubes are a little thick. On your website you mention using a No1, 2 or 4. Is your No 1, a 2.25mm?

    • @MsBasketry
      @MsBasketry  Před 9 lety +2

      +Charleen Galway-Bennett I use the needle diameter of 1.5-1.8 mm.

      I'm fine. But there is a war in my Ukraine. This is terrible. Russia is killing civilians. Tonight, the Russian military hit a high-rise building with a rocket while people were sleeping. There are many victims, among them women and children. There were no military facilities there. Only civilians. Russia is a terrorist country.
