What Clint says here is truth! I just wish the rest of the story would get told with honesty from other senior members who were there.... there a certain few who the night previous had approached Keane in his room to air their own grievances about the shambles that was the set up in the Irish camp.... Keane was primed to have it out with McCarthy and the FAI delegation with what he believed was the backing of the same few players and the squad in general..but they bottled it and left him to hang without speaking up....in an almost "ah no thats not what we ment, we were just saying its a pity things arent a bit better but we'll get by"... they threw him under the bus! Fookin yellow bellied chicken shits! ... another player present that night by default (he was a 'junior' member only just breaking into the team and rooming with Keane ) agreed with everything that was said and thought "well atleast now it'll get sorted coz all the older lads are behind Roy" ....he was gutted the others didnt speak up...he was afraid to speak out because he was only a kid and feared been frozen out by the older guys.....he was Keanes room mate in Saipan....I heard his version of events first hand, i know the lad personally.....we're from the same estate in Dublin...."the snakey bastards screwed him over" his words..... Keane didnt leave he was sent home...McCarthy knew Keane would take the bait....he let him explode knowing he'd talk himself into trouble and whatever the outcome it would show Keane in a bad light!
Yet another Cork legend son of Ireland shafted by a fake bastard son of Ireland!
McCarthy was a cunt! Those senior squad members that shafted Keane are cunts.

Vfm333 U must have read my Mind..I was thinking the very same thing ..As a London Irish fella, now living in the States(and My parents come from the neighbouring county,Kerry)u always have had this Dichotomy between the people born in Ireland&those born abroad(2nd Generation,"Plastic Paddy"but I think It can be bridged when u show the same Passion,Temperment and enthusiasm for Life(Mick McCarthy always came an cross as a serious, blunt Yorkshiremen)But as one of My Cousins commented when we re out on the Booze in NW London(in a Irish Club)"To the English,We're Irish, and to the Irish,we're English"..I once tried to explain that to my old man,&he nearly had a f##king Fit...But Roy Keane will always be a person who brings about contrasting opinions..

If you read his autobiography(first one) he touches on it a good bit, Ireland were playing Holland away in the qualifiers and the meal they had the night before was cheese sandwiches, Roy said he went up to his room ordered a pizza & thought to himself “do you think Ruud Van Nistelrooy(teammate) is sitting in a hotel room eating fucking cheese sandwiches”. Ireland were 2-0 up in that game & drew 2-2 he said McCarthy coming on congratulating him was basically the start of all this. Keane was difficult but to be fair he wanted Ireland to play at his level not vice versa.

      @@BarneyBhoy88 it goes deeper...
That 'qualifying' group had portugal and holland, ireland went undefeated the whole campaign save for a 1nil defeat in iran, infront of 100,000 away fans. Without keane.
In the world cup they played 4 games lost none, went out on penalties to spain. The game against holland at landsdowne road roy keane was unplayable.
A very poor very old german team got beat by a relatively poor brazil team in the final of a tournament that south korea got to the semi final of.

@@BarneyBhoy88 that cheese sandwiches thing is a dishonest false narrative cooked up by Keane and Dunphy for his autobiography. The team stayed at the Hilton in Amsterdam, and on the Friday before the match enjoyed a buffet breakfast, a buffet lunch and a full dinner with pasta, fish, chicken and meat. The cheese sandwiches Keane saw were just an optional pre-training snack. Keane had an argument with the coaching staff, kicked a table in anger, and instead of joining the team for dinner after training chose to order a pizza for himself.

Good explanation, but one correction: he referred to Keane being late for the bus when he was teammates with McCarthy, but that's only partially true. He was late because he was held for a doping test after a match and NOBODY from the FAI (of course) were around to bring him back to the coach in time to head to the airport, so he had to hitch a ride. Unbeknowst to Charlton, because Keane hadn't said anything about his abandonment, he started hammering Keane for being late, and Keane responded (feeling aggrieved in the first place) that nobody asked them to wait for him - STILL not mentioning his abandonment. Mick (the prick) McCarthy then tells Keane he's out of order, and Keane tells Mick to go "pleasure" himself. So it was the FAI's fault Keane was late, Charlton's incompetence that he'd lost track of one of his players, and McCarthy's fault for having a big brown nose.

In other words he wanted to be in control of everything, and threw his toys out of the pram when he didn't get his own way.

He wanted proper preparation and standards. For too long the Irish set up was a micky mouse operation, just happy to take part. Roys experiences at Manchester United showed him what you have to do to be the best and thats all he wanted. He was correct too.

@@fredyscanlan Aye, because players dictate terms to managers, coaching and backroom staff. Bollocks, Roy Keane (and I give him all the respect in the world as a player. He's earned it) wanted to make it all about him. As usual.
