Most straight and balanced explanation of what happened I've heard. Nice one Clinton
Have to agree. First time I have heard it said like this and makes more sense.
What Clint says here is truth! I just wish the rest of the story would get told with honesty from other senior members who were there.... there a certain few who the night previous had approached Keane in his room to air their own grievances about the shambles that was the set up in the Irish camp.... Keane was primed to have it out with McCarthy and the FAI delegation with what he believed was the backing of the same few players and the squad in general..but they bottled it and left him to hang without speaking up....in an almost "ah no thats not what we ment, we were just saying its a pity things arent a bit better but we'll get by"... they threw him under the bus! Fookin yellow bellied chicken shits! ... another player present that night by default (he was a 'junior' member only just breaking into the team and rooming with Keane ) agreed with everything that was said and thought "well atleast now it'll get sorted coz all the older lads are behind Roy" ....he was gutted the others didnt speak up...he was afraid to speak out because he was only a kid and feared been frozen out by the older guys.....he was Keanes room mate in Saipan....I heard his version of events first hand, i know the lad personally.....we're from the same estate in Dublin...."the snakey bastards screwed him over" his words..... Keane didnt leave he was sent home...McCarthy knew Keane would take the bait....he let him explode knowing he'd talk himself into trouble and whatever the outcome it would show Keane in a bad light!
Yet another Cork legend son of Ireland shafted by a fake bastard son of Ireland!
McCarthy was a cunt! Those senior squad members that shafted Keane are cunts.
Vfm333 U must have read my Mind..I was thinking the very same thing ..As a London Irish fella, now living in the States(and My parents come from the neighbouring county,Kerry)u always have had this Dichotomy between the people born in Ireland&those born abroad(2nd Generation,"Plastic Paddy"but I think It can be bridged when u show the same Passion,Temperment and enthusiasm for Life(Mick McCarthy always came an cross as a serious, blunt Yorkshiremen)But as one of My Cousins commented when we re out on the Booze in NW London(in a Irish Club)"To the English,We're Irish, and to the Irish,we're English"..I once tried to explain that to my old man,&he nearly had a f##king Fit...But Roy Keane will always be a person who brings about contrasting opinions..
@@rayvaughan3197 totally agree with what u said, any chance u tell us his room mates name ??
Think Clinton's right...Ireland went out on pens v Spain unluckily...if Keano had been playing the bhoys in green would have made the quarter finals...
Roy was having to do what Mick should have been doing in standing up to FAI
Couldn't agree more
Clinton is a legend, always liked him as a player for Ireland, and seems like a nice bloke. Respect brother 🙏😊
Morrison seems a bit of a character, the kind of fella you need in a squad. This is a refreshingly comedic take on the affair :)
Éamonn MacCionnaith shame he never had the gift, forever second chair/violin
From what i gather as an outsider, I think Roy just wanted a "better" preparation for a massive event such as this and when his expectations weren't met, he just wasn't happy
Kamran Shabbir Roy wanted to be Hitler but had to settle for being Mussolini, ain't nobody wanna touch damaged goods, but when you play for utd what does it matter ? Everything's rigged, your clubs a business, so why not carry that onto your international career, what could possibly go wrong ?
If you read his autobiography(first one) he touches on it a good bit, Ireland were playing Holland away in the qualifiers and the meal they had the night before was cheese sandwiches, Roy said he went up to his room ordered a pizza & thought to himself “do you think Ruud Van Nistelrooy(teammate) is sitting in a hotel room eating fucking cheese sandwiches”. Ireland were 2-0 up in that game & drew 2-2 he said McCarthy coming on congratulating him was basically the start of all this. Keane was difficult but to be fair he wanted Ireland to play at his level not vice versa.
@@BarneyBhoy88 it goes deeper...
That 'qualifying' group had portugal and holland, ireland went undefeated the whole campaign save for a 1nil defeat in iran, infront of 100,000 away fans. Without keane.
In the world cup they played 4 games lost none, went out on penalties to spain. The game against holland at landsdowne road roy keane was unplayable.
A very poor very old german team got beat by a relatively poor brazil team in the final of a tournament that south korea got to the semi final of.
Whos to say what could have happened with the correct preperation.
@@BarneyBhoy88 that cheese sandwiches thing is a dishonest false narrative cooked up by Keane and Dunphy for his autobiography. The team stayed at the Hilton in Amsterdam, and on the Friday before the match enjoyed a buffet breakfast, a buffet lunch and a full dinner with pasta, fish, chicken and meat. The cheese sandwiches Keane saw were just an optional pre-training snack. Keane had an argument with the coaching staff, kicked a table in anger, and instead of joining the team for dinner after training chose to order a pizza for himself.
No their was more to it, Mcarthy accused Keane of faking an injury to get out of playing a qualifier
Clinton's got some good insights, he obviously likes Keane personally but he's able to step back and make the point about Keane and Mccarthy's history.
As an Ireland fan I always liked to see Clinton play for us. A good lad, lots of positivity
Well said, Dragon! The last time I spoke to you was when you was out in Japan. Respect, Barnesy.
Also Clinton is right when he says that if Keane played Eire could/should have made the semi's!!!.... Mark my words though Keane knows that himself 100%...
Ye we battered Spain in extra time but just couldnt get the goal.
He must regret it even if he's not willing to admit it.
@@lardosian that whole world cup was so crooked though. Refs were trying to get us into the next game against Korea. They were even worse for the Spain Korea match
Keane reckons he didn’t make the “you’re not even Irish” comment. Very interesting video
Maybe Keane shouldn't have paid Dunphy to 'ghostwrite' it... ?
Bear in mind that Dunphy would have had many a conversation with Roy over the book and its contents, perhaps both sober and drunk. And also, we have to believe that at least Roy proof-read it before publication, I mean, he is a stickler for the details as we know.
Wow, Clinton has such good personality, funny fellow.
You should listen to his episode of The Magic Sponge podcast (available here) where he really gets into it, shenanigans and all! He's a blast.
Great interview.
Hahhah fucking great interview
I think roy keane got used to the standards set by Ferguson and when mick McCarthy didnt measure up it wasnt for him
Basically roy wanted better.
You know he retired in 2006 right? I'm pretty sure if he didn't want to play for his country he wouldn't gone to Japan in the first place. It's an another matter if (and apparently when) your manager says you have been faking an injury; My motivation to play for a gaffer saying that kind of rubbish would be very low.
McCarthy's completely soft upstairs. Keane was right about everything and his standards were way higher than what Ireland were ever used to before or since.
keane is a winner , he knows what is required, too many footballers want to be like pop-stars,
Keane is a whiner
Look at that laugh like lift door opening
Always rated Morrison decent backup for Quinn n Keane
Clinton Morrison comes across as really nice guy
Good explanation, but one correction: he referred to Keane being late for the bus when he was teammates with McCarthy, but that's only partially true. He was late because he was held for a doping test after a match and NOBODY from the FAI (of course) were around to bring him back to the coach in time to head to the airport, so he had to hitch a ride. Unbeknowst to Charlton, because Keane hadn't said anything about his abandonment, he started hammering Keane for being late, and Keane responded (feeling aggrieved in the first place) that nobody asked them to wait for him - STILL not mentioning his abandonment. Mick (the prick) McCarthy then tells Keane he's out of order, and Keane tells Mick to go "pleasure" himself. So it was the FAI's fault Keane was late, Charlton's incompetence that he'd lost track of one of his players, and McCarthy's fault for having a big brown nose.
MMT Sr Oh dear, that was World Cup 94 !
It was 1992 Keane and Staunton were late because they were shopping, and then had the words with McCarthy !
Get your facts right !
It seems to me Roy wanted to win, and wanted to prepare to increase those chances of winning.
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
That's exactly rignt. The standards Keane was used to be didn't get with Ireland but the thing was Ireland were a bloody good team in 2002 but we're run by amateurs.
Clinton was never Ireland's best striker but the lad would run 4 90 minutes non-stop
Amazing stamina to be able to keep going for 6 hours.
But it was such a pity, the way things went as with Keane we would have gone much further and not to forget we knocked out Holland( who were one of the best teams at that time)by beaten them 1-0 at home to progress to Saipan.
Clinton seems like a top geezer. Very funny guy
Clinton also told this story on the Magic Sponge podcast with Jimmy Bullard
It's a blast!

LOL. Bet Clinty lost his Cockney accent for the rest of the day.
Brilliant
Whilst I’ve nothing but respect for Roy, himself, the FAI and Mick McCarthy let the country down no matter how you look at it. Shame as we may have well beaten the Spanish.
Best explanation of what happened just straight honest no bullshit
Well done Clinton , you did proud thanks
Well done Clinton, fair play to you.
Fair play Clinton lad!...you're spot on about the cork thing!...there not called the rebel county for nothing!
Peter Reilly who was the other player from cork he was talking about? I'm guessing it was Liam miller but not sure
Cork, the rebels, cause they're wanted nowhere else, Kerry people are thick, but smart enough to avoid em
you who yes I know what a 🐄 cow is. I'm saying that guy is such a muck shite that he sucks off cow's. Not difficult to understand really, but ya I'm the idiot ok bro
you who ok you got me there 😭🙃
He could suck off the teet
good lad
I played youth football with Clinton... Never expected him to do as well as he did if I’m honest but fair play to him he forged a decent career for himself.... Plus he’s a top lad.. Really good fun and proper funny.
cawwk ... these lads play hurliing ... czcams.com/video/eIGKtGHWxYI/video.html&pp=ygUOdGhlIHJvY2sgY29yayA%3D
Amazing how Roy Keane has had more arguments than hot dinners but it's always someone else's fault.
@Laoch he always thinks he's right in all of his arguments
amazing how people who havent won much on the pitch dislike Mr. Keane ....Darren Fergusin's father for example ... this is the standard we expect from our sportsmen in Eire... czcams.com/video/eIGKtGHWxYI/video.html&pp=ygUOdGhlIHJvY2sgY29yayA%3D
Roy Keane, self before side. What a player
So. A failure of management occurred
Who was the under 21 lad from Cork going to war with Keane???
Graham Boston thinking Liam Miller there but he was older. Think he’s possibly mistaken
I like Clinton morrison. He should take a bigger part on sky.
Bring on NON-Oirish BIG Jack!
I love Clinton, much better player than he was ever given credit for.
Blues legend 😀
Interesting but there is an e in the English language
Clints just had a coffee i reckon
Or a line
Rambling
Roy has next levels of put downs that hurt so much because they are always the truth 😂😂😂 how can you tell the manager in front the team you had a bad first touch 😂😂
Roy Keane, greatest Republic player ever and one of the best captains and players in the history of Manchester United who won everything you can in club football. Mick McCarthy, donkey of a centre half and a championship manager.
How naive could MM be to challenge Keano in public? Just shows that Mick has never been the brightest. Good to see Clinton backing up everything Keano said in his book!!!
That 'donkey' did something that Keane never did. He led his country at a World Cup. 😎
And Keane was not just naïve but downright stupid to have disobeyed his manager and given those two interviews.
Clinton himself agreed that Keane disobeyed McCarthy.
And that's the way it was. 😎
@@Mani26031981 Give it a rest, you're an obsessed gooner, gutted that your purple patch didn't reap more trophies because Keane was always there to stop you. Just be happy that you got a couple of PL Titles and an FA Cup. Timing is a bitch and sometimes it's against you. United had the same with Barca's best ever side being around to stop us winning 2 more CL finals. Shit happens, deal with it 👍😉
@@KryptonitetoallBS THAT'S your counter-argument? Seriously?
😂😆😝
I'd be saying EXACTLY the same even if I were a Manchester United fan. And I think you'll find there are MANY Irish United fans who feel the same way. 😉😎
Saipan can imagine Roy Keane losing his nut the Irish setup was mickey mouse
Paul Gray wasn’t mickey mouse, it was mick mccarthy.
jarraandyftm didn't he configure his team and use kilbane to beat the Dutch, despite them having Edgar fuckin davis ? In his prime ?? Yeah, Mick was the man.
Ben Phone Edgar Davis? Good player, not as good as Edgar Davids mind...
Mick McCarthy is shite as has been proven at every club he’s been at throughout his career. What’s your point?
jarraandyftm its was the FAI...Mickey mouse and still are
Lol Keane a Savage
Never likef McCartney , love keano.
Massive respect to clinton
Wasn't worth walking out over
Want keano at united !!!
Clinton great Irish man⚽
Dusnt look or sound Irish he a london boy
Alan Lynch : He’s not Irish ☘️ his grandmother is tho 💯
@@adamgordon2572 she was a fine thing as well
Whut eeez eee lak lak inneeeet
Brilliant. I was in Japan and South Korea in 2002 If Roy Stayed you never Know. Did you know in Extra Time v Spain the second half
of Extra time us the Fans The TV Commentators or the Irish Team did not know that Spain had only 10 players for the Second half of extra time? The Fuckers kept that quiet LOL. WE CALLED THE Japanese RENT A FAN.
eamon dunphy ...need we say anymore about dublin hegemony. czcams.com/video/eIGKtGHWxYI/video.html&pp=ygUOdGhlIHJvY2sgY29yayA%3D
Walked out on his country....simple as.
Don Dealgan only to a simple mind!
I get Roy Keane wanting the best always but come on... it's Ireland... even England set up wasn't like United's. End of the day he's a cock really, all the Irish fans working hard, paying ex amount of money for tickets & flights for the captain to wanna jump ship, that's not very captain material IMO.
They were full time professionals. No excuse! Instagram models train better! A muppet set up, settling for third best. No excuses for a shit pitch for a team going to WC. None!
Between that tw@t McCarthy and then the henry handball. My heart broke knowing that was the last time that group of players were going be able to play together and without much talent coming through there would be dark times ahead. I was right.
I remember reading a Richard Dunne profile and the journo remembered Dunne being rat-arsed at a journo/team bbq just before the Keane stuff and saying how much Dunne had matured etc.. but that tells you all you need to know about the teams prep, getting the media outside while boozing being more important than training pitches, shame Keane bolted, he was man of the match 7 out of Ireland's 14 qualifiers and like England in the last World Cup, wouldn't have had the worst match ups to the quarters or semis!
We would have won the World Cup that year if Keano had played
Nope. 100% serious, we were unlucky to lose to Spain we would have beat them with Roy in the side. Then we would have beat Korea, then Germany who couldn't beat us without Roy. That puts us in the Final where i believe we would have beat the Brazilians
The Rain But we will never know lol It was genuinely our best chance of ever winning it
We outplayed the Germans in the group stages. You cant just say we wouldnt have beaten them, we will never know that. An Ireland side with Roy Keane in it is better than one without in my opinion. However Damien Duff said that Keane leaving let some players come out of their shell and play better, maybe they wouldnt have played as well with Keane in the squad.
We could have beaten Korea and reached the semis for sure. There was no beating that Brazilian team though - Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Kaka, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Gilberto Silva etc
And they say England fans are deluded...
Broad irish accent there clinton
To be sure
Kane, Rice, W.Keane, Maguire - lots of Irish in the England team like Hart, Keown, Rooney, Scholes before them.
@Laoch half the english team have irish backgrounds you muppet Lool
Aye, in t' championship we want to pass the ball weigh up t'sky until it lands t'big man up top t'head it in then we park t'bus aye. Wheres me cup of yorkshire tea.
it's called ego taking over.
Nice guy but got to be one of the worst strikers that Blues ever brought ...swapped for Andy Johnson...what a move that was, scored bag full for Palace but could not hit barn door with us....KRO
get on with it ffs
how long does that take ffs
Roy likes to overreact it’s a bit selfish to let the whole country down
Laoch . Roy Keane safety 😂😂😂😂please . As he says just get on with it so he should have done. I like the guy but that was very very selfish. For that moment he was a selfish bastard
ah he only represented 26 counties for a start and in the fullness of time he is Legend ! wimmin dont understand male competition . czcams.com/video/eIGKtGHWxYI/video.html&pp=ygUOdGhlIHJvY2sgY29yayA%3D
In other words he wanted to be in control of everything, and threw his toys out of the pram when he didn't get his own way.
He wanted proper preparation and standards. For too long the Irish set up was a micky mouse operation, just happy to take part. Roys experiences at Manchester United showed him what you have to do to be the best and thats all he wanted. He was correct too.
kdlofty he wanted things done properly and threw this his toys out of the pram when the Irish fa wouldn’t do it:)
that's mccarthy for you sure ...
@@fredyscanlan Aye, because players dictate terms to managers, coaching and backroom staff. Bollocks, Roy Keane (and I give him all the respect in the world as a player. He's earned it) wanted to make it all about him. As usual.
Keane sounds like a spoiled kid
