    As a person with very curly hair, it blows my mind that a famous beauty expert is talking about styling curls. I'm young but even I remember the days of Lorraine Massey's book being my only resource and every stylist in town wanting to straighten my hair on the way out of the salon. I am so happy with this trend in the beauty industry yet I can only hope that curl and texture acceptance continues far past this trend. Let's make it happen!! Also from Queer Eye to Over the Top to this channel JVN is creating such incredible content and I love it!!!

      Yesss. I was 35 when I found a hairdresser that knew what to do with my super curly hair. My mum got my childhood hairdresser to just cut all my hair off bc no one knew what to do with it! When I went to a hairdresser to get it straightened after I’d grown it all out, she complained that it took too long (and it looked TERRIBLE). FINALLY us curly haired people are being taught and encouraged to embrace and love our natural hair!!!! 👏👏👏

      This is exactly what I was thinking. Also, the little side-eye crinkle, skeptical look he gives his hair while he is spraying the texturizing spray... That is the look everyone has made at their hair in the middle of attempting to push that 75% perfect style be 95% perfect... A little scolding to say, you better not make me wish I had stopped at 75%.

      Best way to protect your curls during night is using a satin or silk cap, you look like and old lady, but your curls survive the night. Or also, you can use a satin pillow case 🙂

    • @charjack2
      @charjack2 Před 3 lety +6

      Yes to the satin cap but you can also do a pineapple ponytail on the top of your head. Use a scrunchie or I use cut up sections from the ankle of an old tube sock. Doesn't crease the hair like a hair tie.

      Some tips that JVN didn't cover here that maybe you, with straight hair, never had to thought about: curly hair gets detangled ends to roots (don't get that comb or brush and push it down from the roots). Work the knots little by little. Try to not brush it dry as well -- that makes the hair look frizzy and can break it too --, but if your daughter hair gets very tangled, use a lil bit of oil, work through the bigger knots with the oil in your hands first, then come in with the brush. It's normal for the hair to get a bit "crunchy" after drying with mousse or cream on it; wait until it's COMPLETELY dry (either naturally or with the blow dryer), then come back with your hands with a lil bit of oil (or using an old soft cotton tshirt as a glove) and scrunch (that crunching motion JVN showed in the video) the hair until there's no crunchiness left. It's also very normal for people to have different kinds of curls and waves in their heads, so there might be some parts of her hair that are curlier, others are wavier, some can even be kinda straight! If she has a lot of different textures it might be a good idea to apply more or less product on that part of the head (more for curlier, less for straighter). I know this is a lot but your daughter will thank you in the future for helping her with her curls! :)

Anyone who wants to go deeper, figure out your curl type (I'm a 3A, it goes from 1-4, ABC within each number) and find youtubers who are exclusively curly hair experts. Aghh! I literally have been waiting for Jonathan to talk about curls for soo long! Love this. But I would also really love it if we could see a whole cycle of curly hair. I feel like I'm quite confident with how I can style my hair straight out of the shower, but after the first day things start to look quite sad haha, and I haven't really found great ways to bring the curls back to life which ends up in a bun or a hat over them and then they are ruined, so I have to take showers more often than I would like.. Anyways, thanks for a great video Jonathan. I'm glad you're finally over on youtube :)

    A couple years ago half my hair fell out due to stress and health. We chopped it short to try to take the weight off, I tried to leave my scalp alone because it was in pain, I ate way more protein to fit my lifestyle, and I researched the curly girl method and also for what the women of Color were doing for their hair. It saved my scalp. My hair over time got used to my natural waves and I started sprouting a couple real curls. I’m so happy being this way with my natural texture and my scalp isn’t in pain anymore. I do get slapped by non- curly girls (never guys) for saying curly girl method. To them I don’t have curly hair. But the actual curly girls are so kind and do agree that my hair is curly. I hope people become more accepting of the curly life. Everyone’s hair is so different and personal. It’s about appreciating what you have and loving your neighbor.

    I have to admit, as someone with naturally curly hair, I was v skeptical. I've watched all of Queer Eye and seen JVN's Instagram, so I figured if anyone would know what he's talking about, it'd be him, but I was pretty sure I hadn't seen him with curly hair somehow. Had no idea his was naturally curly too! Honestly, the routine he does isn't super dissimilar from mine, though my hair is SO thick that it'd take hours if I spent an equivalent amount of time on it, if that makes sense. 😅 Like he clipped up his hair into two layers... Mine would be maybe 5-7 hahaha. and it would take maybe an hour to dry with a hairdryer.
    Needless to say, I've been waiting for this video since every single episode of Queer Eye ever 😭🧡 thanks JVN

      I learned from Curly Girl Handbook to use small clips to pin up a crown of curls at the top of your head so they set that way as they dry. But lately I’ve also found that I can take a big butterfly clip and do a high volume, loosely cinched half up/half down to get some of that effect. The latter technique has the benefit of looking semi-normal if I have to leave the house before it’s completely air dried (norms against wet hair in public be damned--it’s summer, anyway!). Not sure if this explanation is clear, but might help you not tuck while wet.

      Something I’ve found helpful is “plopping” my damp hair with a cotton t-shirt (google for articles/vids on how to tie it up!). I use a microfibre head wrap when I initially come out of the shower. After I finish drying off/moisturizing/etc I’ll let my hair down, rake in product and then plop it on top of my head. I’ll keep it up for as long as it takes to get ready, or longer if I’m not leaving the house right away or at all :)

      Yes! I have this problem too and have found the solution for me: clips on the top of my head while drying! They’re two-pronged and metal and I use maybe 8 around the crown of my head to lift the flat parts up while drying. Got them off Amazon. Also what’s helped is tilting my head down and toward my knees when applying conditioner. I then hold the ends in my hand to keep in the conditioner and rinse out the rest of my hair with my head DOWN still. Then when ready to towel, I use my Tee-Owl which i swear by for my long thick curly locks!

    I use leave in conditioner and/or hair oil on wet hair, like just stopped dripping hair, brush it through, and run my finger horizontally to break up the large chunks of pattern from brushing it. If I want volume, I hang my head upside down and wrap my hair in a towel or tshirt like a durag. Wait for it to dry and then unwrap and shake/poof.

    So, ok, lifelong curlygirly here and we have the exact same haircut!
    -Does the diffuser actually make your hair nicer than just using the products and letting it air dry? I've always found less is more but my crown is always frizzy - it sounds like that's what the diffuser takes care of?
    -You use a LOT more product than me but I hear they're better than they were... is you hair solid/hard/crunchy after adding everything that you did? I see it has movement but what does it feel like to the fingers and when my lover runs their hands through it will they find it's more solid than it looks?
    -Tip: when I have an unruly curl that doesn't look right or won't go the direction I want it to I grab a nearby chunk of hair and sort of weave the offender through it with as little upset as possible - pick a spot in the nearby hair that separates naturally and then gently pull the offender through. Viola, and it disappears. When I pick the offender apart it just results in multiple problematic chunks.

When I was in school all the girls be wearing there hair down every single day and I guess it was a trend but I would be like oh no you shower your hair that much? They all be looking dead as well bc they also pin it straight and didn’t care. This video is much needed for ppl lol. Keep it up❤️

    I have long hair down to my waist, with mild body/waves, and I was skeptical about this. I was thrilled to have this treatment work!!! OMG!!!
    I've tried it a few times. I'm even able to brush it out when it's dry, then re-wet it down and reactivate the curls. This is really important because I play music outside at festivals and having a "rain sturdy" hairstyle has been a problem. I'm VERY happy to say this will solve a TON of prep problems.
    Thank you Jonathan! You ROCK on so many levels. This will save me a TON of time, and I'm so happy with it! :: HUGS ::

    Everyone's hair/scalp is different. Cleaning your scalp daily does not cause the oil glands to "overproduce"-- that is a myth. I was going with the shampoo every three or four days thing because that was the advice out there on social media, and my scalp developed seborrheic dermatitis. I switched to a fragrance and dye free shampoo and started washing it every other day, lo and behold, my hair is clean, soft, and my scalp has improved a lot. I would not go four days without washing my face, nor would I go four days without washing my scalp. Again, everyone's skin/scalp is different!! There is no one size fits all. My dermatologist even told me that it's fine to shampoo daily if your hair tolerates it.

    • @aundrataylor4249
      @aundrataylor4249 Před 3 lety +1

      Curly hair is usually more dry or dehydrated so washing less often is actually beneficial. If you're prone to that dryness & dehydration washing too often can absolutely make your scalp produce more oil than necessary to compensate. Curly girls also detox their scalps regularly for scalp health to balance out the less frequent washing. There is so much that goes into maintaining curly hair that differs so much from other hair types.

    • @giualonso
      @giualonso Před 3 lety

      thissssss! scalp is SKIN. can you imagine going a week without a shower? curly hair needs a lot of product so it's prone to build up too. every other day is the frequency most dermatologists say is the healthiest. I usually do every other day or every three days tops and have no problem with dryness either.

    Anyone new to curly care- this is a great video for starting/newbies. Once you get acclimated to the ideas and have pursued some of the other curl influencers to try out techniques that work best for you. I currently do wash my hair every 2-3 days. I can’t handle it going longer. But it took time for to get to that point and realize my lifestyle wouldn’t permit going longer between washes.
    So many different techniques and products for the different types. And every rule can be broken if you know why it exists.
