  • The South Downs Way is a long distance footpath and bridleway running along the South Downs in southern England. It is one of 16 National Trails in England and Wales. The trail runs for 160 km (100 mi) from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in East Sussex, with about 4,150 m (13,620 ft) of ascent and descent. This is part one of my three day solo backpacking hike, part two will be soon. If you would like to be notified when I upload the next one then make sure to subscribe and hit the bell notification.

Very impressive. Any chance of listing the kit you took and what boots you wore. Hopefully doing this soon but over longer time. Thanks

Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. I’ve spent a bit of time trying to remember exactly what I took with me and I did my best to come up with a kit list, which I’ve added in the description with links to Amazon where I bought most of my gear. It’s a great hike, hopefully the weather stays nice for you. There’s plenty of water stops along the way as well as cafes/farm shop, burger vans ice cream vans. You’ll be spoiled for choice.camp sites are really accommodating, the first one I turned up to I just stumbled across at 8:30pm rang a number on the gate and was pitched up 10/15 minutes later practically the same on day 2. Any questions just ask. Hope it goes well, have fun

Hi mate, I took 2 polyester t-shirts, 1 long sleeve top and bottoms “Lycra type” for night time or if it got cold, 2 “Lycra type” boxers, 1 pair of shorts, 1 duck down jacket, 1 thin water proof jacket, 3 pairs of socks and a cap. I think that was it. I chose these items as they were good for keeping me cool, lightweight, helps against chafing and they pack down small. 8 days is a while but if you’re stopping along the way camp sites etc, you should have chance to hand wash them. I washed one lot on the first night. But it really depends how much you don’t mind stinking, I had to get an hour and half train back from Eastbourne in a packed train and I can tell you not a single person sat next to me the whole way, I also didn’t move an inch incase I kicked up any more of the stink in a packed carriage🤣. Good luck buddy hope it goes well, I would love to do it over 8 days to experience it all and take it all in. All the best 👍🏻
