I'm using the previous revision of Midtown since been researched a lot including from your channel. They fitted with Evans UV2 batters, UV1 reso's, and an EMAD clear. Honestly, It's gets the job done except the snare drum which I'm using Recording Custom Alu instead. In hindsight, I kinda regret because the sizes is too safe - feels like a bop kit sizes minus one.
If I could go back, I'd love to purchased the Stage Custom Hip from Yamaha - it's unsafe and impractical configuration for some but a compact specialty kit looks fun as hell.
Great review as always. The ending conclusion is a welcome gift for many drummer viewers.

      new model?
when did they realise a new midtown exactly?
my local store got one with a chrome wrap that looks coll for almost 600 Euros.
but I am not sure if that is the new one or one from some years ago,
      -how to make sure?
      thanks!

So in 2024 is the Midtown still a better buy than the Roadshow as a first kit? Need to buy one for m son. Thanks!

The old model does not come with hardware and has a suspension tom mount instead of mounted directly to the shell.

I also use Evans frosted ec2 heads. With Evans emad2 head for bass drum. Works great. 💪

Shells are not the same...the old ones were 6 play 7.5mm SST techniche, now 6 play 7.0mm standard construction...

I have the previous version you tested in 2021 which IMO sounds nicer than this updated version but I have upgraded several bits.
It's my only drum set at the moment, and I keep in the garage to practice on, it's done the job. I replaced the heads on the toms and snare with pin stripes and an ambassador/hazy reso respectively and upgraded the snare wires.
The snare is definitely more comfortable in a higher tuning range and with a small amount of muffling it sounds pretty good to me.

The new Midtown is nowhere near the quality of the original. I have been using my first edition for years! Great kit. I agree with you 💯 👍🏼 I use Crosstown Yamaha aluminum hardware. Great combo.
