    Wow! 9 years ago, we're all a little bit longer in the tooth and some of us wider in the waist! I'm finally in the market for a big GS, after watching your videos religiously for a good 6-7 years (yes, you've sold me onto the GS!), you've been a cornerstone and a torchbearer for motorcycle review channels and one I always turn to when considering a purchase of a bike as your reviews generally come from a very solid place and are consistent across the board.
    Just wanted to say thanks for all the output you have given us over the years, maybe one day I'll bring my (hopefully newly acquired GS) along to a bike meet.
    Keep up the outstanding videos Andy!

    A good review. I've the same kit on my bike, minus the top box. I have just bought hatched black reflectors for the back of the panniers via eBay. You can't see them in day light but at night and in direct light they are brilliant for extra safety. You can get them in red also.
    I checked out the battery tender for the GS. No hassles using one direct to the battery. Just don't turn on the ignition whilst it's connected, which is obvious. I'm using a Harley charger and it's working well. Checked it with BMW.
    One last thing, I had my bike in for recall due to sticking switch gear. Keep an eye on yours - indicators and kill switch replaced. Kill switch broke all together and bike had to be collected by a recovery truck and taken to BMW.
    Sorry for the very lengthy response.
    Cheers, Craig

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 9 lety

      Hi Craig,
      Thanks or your kind words - I have just ordered some "engineering grade" (whatever that means) reflective tapes in silver and red to adorn my panniers with, so will be applying that as soon as, strikes me as a great idea.
      ...and I've heard about the switch gear going before, have to say it's my least favourite bit of the bike, the tactile sensation on the BMW "PCB" style switchgear is rubbish and feels cheap - shame given in most other respects the bike is fantastic...
      Thanks for watching - TMF

    I myself would go for the 2 side cases combined with a large roll bag across the passenger seat. I think the top box looks a bit ungainly as it's a bit too tall. Well done, great presentation.

    Hmm, the Varios on my '09 1200GS have a center locking lug rear the rear seat. Interesting to see the updated version (aside from opposite side exhaust!)
    I like them more than I thought I would.... but it is annoying when your objects either fall out the side when opened, or you may catch some stuff in the groove for the lid which wont allow it to close....

    Regarding the inner bags available… I got really excited when you pulled out the one, hoping you’d show them all. On the BMW website, the one for the top case in particular looks a bit small. Does it a) fully fill out the top case, and b) is it also expandable like the one you showed?
    Ta.

    Great instructional video. I have the same setup and I love these panniers as they are simple to use and really functional for touring, camping, etc. I should add that with the top box, you need a new adaptor plate for the back rack which BMW sell. It is easy to install though I can't remember whether it was sold separately to the box or not. Cheers from Australia. G

    Good well produced review but having used these cases for two holidays on my GS some years back I sold them and fitted ali boxes. The cases are clever and look good but the capacity is small compared with the outer dimensions due to the space taken by the mechanism. They also heavy even when empty, again as an expanding mechanism needed to be carried plus relatively heavy plastic.
    The side opening is awkward to fill without either removing the cases from the bike or using liner bags which further reduces capacity. A final annoyance that we found when having to leave the bike overnight in a bike parking bay was finding bikes parked close on both sides and having to push the bike into traffic to load the bags as there was no room to open them.
    The ali boxes I fitted did look a little tatty quite quickly but were lighter, narrower, better capacity, easier to fill and one big plus I found was that the lids could be left so items too big to go completely inside could be carried easily.

    @lancelemay6971 Před 6 lety

    I wonder if the aftermarket has something similar or if you can buy these from something other than the BMW dealer.
    The BMW build your own bike site in the US has the Vario side cases at $1439. The Vario top case at $733. The inner bags for the Vario cases at $310 and the inner bag for the top case at $155. This adds up to $2637. You have to be totally in love with these bags to spend that kind of money on them! Then they will get you for installing the keyed locks - are they worth $3K?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 6 lety +1

    Thanks for the thorough review MissendenFlyer! I currently just purchased a super clean (new to me) 2016 g650gs and was all set to buy aftermarket aluminum panniers as I want to do a little touring this summer.
    After watching this video I'm having second thoughts as the N. American dealers have a limited selection of the Vario cases left for my bike for half the price of aluminum.
    I know this video is a bit dated so I was wondering if you have gotten on well with your side cases??? Have they held up and would you choose them again? Thanks so much for any help.
    Cheers from NW Washington!

    Can anyone help. The video shows the the case being fitted directly to the rear rack which I believe was a standard part (or at least came on my bike 2017 Rallye), some retailers of Vario top cases are telling me I need an adapter plate to enable the top case to fit, how is it there does not seem to be such an adapter plate in the video?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 7 měsíci

  • @Bazza47
    @Bazza47 Před 7 lety

    I've got them too MF and I also like the way they fix to the GS without the usual scaffolding. I've also got some inner bags off ebay which were alot cheaper than the BM ones though not as sturdy. The right hand one does have an extra pouch on it that fits in the space above the exhaust which the BM one doesn't have though. I've tried all the combinations and for a short stay I just use the panniers with a sports bag where the top box would go to save weight and make it easier for SWMBO to get on and off. The one disadvantage compared to the aluminium ones is the varios are side loading so you can normally cram more in the ali ones as they are top loaders but all things considered the vario stuff is a good combination for road touring. If you leave the bags out you can get more stuff in too, but then you need to take them off the bike to unpack and repack them which I've also done!

    • @beans4491

      Absolutely not a pain at all, there's a clever stainless bracket that fixes to the nut at the front of the tank and a bracket below the seat which attaches to the seat adjuster. All easily removed with squeeze clips and flipped up for refuelling (if that makes sense). The bottom of the bag is cloaked with a kinda rubber material which completely illimanates any fine tank scratches. I'm OCD too lol

    Great videos. Im in the market for a new GS and having watched your video comparing the GS/GSA, found it most helpful. Do you reckon the 2017 GS gearbox and motor runs as smoothly as the GSA (per your earlier video), asking because the dates can be a bit confusing. Also, as a taller rider, do you think the wind screen is adequate for a 6'2+ rider? I prefer the look of the GS and the non spoke wheel, any issues for you regarding the two types of rims?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 7 lety

      Hi Troy - yes the new 2017 bikes are both as good as each other on the engine front GSA or GS - both lovely. You probably would need to replace the screen with an aftermarket one (I did at 5'8"). With regard to spokes v cast wheels, I like the look of spokes but a pain to clean and if you're not off-roading...why go there. Thanks for the kind words - TMF

    I just bought a 2016 GSA and need some advice on panniers.
    The Vario boxes look extremely practical - I'm after a slimmer profile where possible. My question is how do you think these would fare compared to the aluminium panniers if the bike fell over? Would the aluminium ones offer more protection for the bike and the rider's leg being crushed?
    My bike has the brackets already installed for the aluminium boxes and they seem to offer more mounting support than the Vario ones.
    Thanks!
    Al.

    Hey JB. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2014 GS and have been of 2 minds, either to go with the vario panniers or a pair of soft panniers at a much lower price. • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 9 lety

      Hi Patrick - the vario panniers are made from pretty thick grade plastic and I think would survive a drop mainly with a few scratches...they are a rugged build for plastic cases (compared for example with my old Givi luggage). Enjoy your new bike, they are great bits of kit!

    In my opinion, the sidecases are the worst on the market because of the design. When your cases are fully loaded and you open them, things fall out because the lids open on the side. Top opening is always better. Also, inside the sidecases, you have weird angles, it's not a perfect square if you know what I mean. It makes harder to stack things.
