- This week has been my roughing out week, and I have chosen to produce this project video to cover areas of green/wet timber and what to do with those small pieces that you have lying around. This project video will cover three simple woodturning roughing-out projects: a bowl, a platter, and a catch-all.

Great tips on prepping, Kerry. My chuck doesn't use a hex key so, if I find it hard to remove, I open the jaws like you showed and use a piece of 3/4" wood about 12" long to lock in the jaws with a "handle" sticking up and slap it with my palm - like you did with the tool. (mine is a wood slat from a futon)

Some great tips and tricks.
I really should start turning some of my wet wood ,roughing it down and then let it dry.
When I started turning all the old guys at the shed told me to let it dry first. Could take up to 8 years or more. Who wants to wait that long.
Tell me do you ever have any rough out bowls that you can’t make into a finished bowl.

Thank you for the support, Greg. In my recent live video, I showcased a heap of bowls with defects. I’m currently trying to find homes for them. Usually, if they have significant patches of minerals, holes, or even rot, I tend to discard them. Does that answer your question?

I loved it. Your personality is perfect for that type venue. That bit of nervousness is what makes it genuine. I shared it it with students and was the perfect timing. Our last session we went over the basics of cutting and sealing blanks. Getting them roughed was going to be our next lesson so we can get them some inventory drying. I really needed to get them on some green wood. I have been letting them use some of my dried blanks. They have done well but it is fun to stream shavings while practicing cuts. Can’t wait for the next one. As long as you stay real to you it’s all going to be good. To many of the pompous know it alls ruin it. All the knowledge in the world will not promote our craft if it’s to boring to watch. You are such an impressive young man. Love seeing the growth 👍

Your inner recess on the bowl and catch all reminds me of what Richard Raffan does when remounting bowl blanks. How thick were these pieces prior to turning?
Yeah, that shoulder is perfect for allowing a chuck to expand into it 👌. They were thicker than what I would normally like them to be. The platter blank could have been a bowl, but it was the only quarter-sawn stuff I had that size lying around. Usually, it’s around the 50mm mark for platters.

In the case of the player blank for example, Why not tenons on both sides instead of the starting Mortice and tenon on other side? Missed if there was an advantage to doing it that way.
I chose to do it this way because the mortise will be left in the end platter, and it will only need a quick touch-up with the skew. You could do it either way; it's up to you, there's no right and wrong way.
