  • How to fix the hinge on a shower door that is sticking. Useful for doors with continuous plastic hinges.
    Note: If the issue is due to a hairline fracture on the metal of the hinge itself, swapping the sleeve will not remedy the issue.
    Here is the sleeve i used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...

    very important to note, when you say, “flip it over”, only flip over the PVC sleeve. If you flip over the entire door and frame. The shower door would open from the inside and that would not be advisable (because the shower door metal hinge has a curve to allow it to open out words only)
    I tried this and it worked! Thank you so much! My customers are so happy I saved them hundreds of dollars!

    👏🙌I almost bought a new semi frameless door kit this weekend to fix our door. I've been looking for parts at the local hardware stores and couldn't find any, and in fact wasn't sure what I needed. This video solved it all. Just got the door off the wall. (Was a bit of a pain) Ordering the PVC sleeve now. One thing to note is, not all sleeves are the same. Make sure to measure the inside and outside diameter too.

    Thanks for the excellent video. This was the only solution that I found to help repair our shower door. The information was presented very clearly and thoroughly. At first I thought this would be a bigger project than I wanted to take on. But I called at least 4 or 5 glass installers and none of them would work with a continuous hinge, so your instructions gave me the confidence to try. My shower door wasn’t as tall, so only weighed about 45 lbs - much easier to handle by myself. The aluminum frame pieces were a little different, but the instructions were so good I got the door off very easily. Using a drill template, it looked like the old sleeve had a 5/16” OD. I ordered the 66” sleeve from Amazon. When I installed the new sleeve I couldn’t get the door closed - it looks like the sleeve is too thick to fit in the opening. I have not heard yet from the supplier if there is another place to order a thinner sleeve, so think I need to find another solution. What type of new door are you planning to use? It seems that continuous hinges are no longer used for shower doors!

    Thank you This Guy, I took your advice and tackled this job. I removed the door and inspected the bottom closely. The bottom of my door was corroded and no longer square. I filed off the bottom of the pivot so it was square. I decided to get some #6 stainless washers to place on top of the bottom pin to raise the door about 3/32. First I stacked the washers on a 10 penny nail and ground the diameter down to 5/16 so they would fit in the channel. This made up for what I had to file off and gave me the clearance I was hoping to achieve. I greased them with lithium grease and used WD40 on the hinge sleeve which I did reverse. Door now works like new.

    Great video sir. I have a question about the bottom bracket with the set screw. Is it the continuous henge that keeps the door from rubbing at the bottom? I am looking at my dad's door and I don't see the hinge coming down to meet the bottom set screw bracket.
    The door was taken off to do tile work so somehow someone must have had the door jacked up prior at the bottom so it wouldn't rub.
    Could this be the case? Thanks Steve

    Thank you so much for this! My task was slightly more difficult because the hinge was already halfway popped out of the bracket (we just bought the house and that's the condition the shower door was in) and I had to pry it out the rest of the way with a butter knife. But once I got that done, after a bit of sweating and swearing, I was able to get the whole thing replaced and rehung. I also have to replace the rubber gasket at the bottom, but that's a much easier task!

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to make this. In my situation I have the exact same door. The door has "dropped" so to speak causing the bottom to scrape on the bottom rail. Is the plastic hinge insert the reason that it would cause the drop? My aluminum rails do no appear to be cracked in any way. Does the weight of the glass sit on the plastic sleeve hinge?

    • @ThisGuyProductions
      @ThisGuyProductions  Před 3 lety +3

      Careful because my door wasn't dropping off the frame. It was leaning because of the broken hinge. Recently my door started "dropping" and it was due to the aluminum frame wearing out and causing a curve in the hinge. Basically, there is no repair if your hinge has warped. I am awaiting an entire door replacement soon.

  • @RamblingRik
    @RamblingRik Před 3 lety +2

    Hey, This Guy! Great video, very informative, and I think you've helped me figure out a problem, but I'd like to double check.
    We had two problems with our door (or rather, same problem, two separate causes)
    1st problem: the rubber drip stopper at the bottom had split and started to drag at the handle side, you'd have to lift the door by the handle while opening and closing. Took off the flashing, flipped the rubber around and raised it, all good.
    2nd problem: door is still catching at the bottom below the handle. I thought it was the same problem you describe with the hinge sleeve, but I think may actually be the bushings. I can phyically slide the door up and down on the hinge, and I feel like the top bushing is too high.
    Question: Would it do to just unscrew the bushing, raise the door, slide the bushing down and retighten so that the door can't slide down on the hinge? When I raise the door, i feel like I have almost an inch play between the bushing and the hinge sleeve.

    • @ThisGuyProductions
      @ThisGuyProductions  Před 3 lety

      Its been my experience that those bushings screw into a designated hole in the door frame. It wouldn't hurt to remove the door and give it a shot, but proceed with caution. You should also inspect the points where the hinge makes contact to ensure it hasn't warped. That happened to my door in the long run. I will be replacing the entire door soon.

    • @thomasharp3246
      @thomasharp3246 Před 2 lety

      Did that work? That's what I was thinking of doing. Or lifting the door then putting a shem below the bottom hinge so it doesn't drop. Might be best to do both.

    • @RamblingRik
      @RamblingRik Před 2 lety +2

      @@thomasharp3246 i went with This Guy's knowledge that the screws on the bushings screw into dedicated holes in the housing behind the bushing.
      I unscrewed, got everything cleaned up, including the long nylon piece, then assembled, placed the **upper** bushing where I actually wanted it, about a quarter to half inch lower within the tube in my case, so it snugly sandwiched the hinge. I then drilled a new hole through where the bushing's screw hole newly lined up, being careful to make it a fraction smaller than the screw so that the screw would thread itself a new home.
      I did that the day after my comments with This Guy and so far I haven't had any issues since, though i must have slightly altered the levelness of the door, since it likes to swing closed now, not an issue for me. I just need to readjust the level of the drain trough at the bottom again to make it properly drain instead of dumping water on the outside when you open the door.

    • @RamblingRik
      @RamblingRik Před 2 lety +1

      @@thomasharp3246 i should note that I adjusted the top bushing down, because when i would lift the door UP, i had a quarter to half inch of play, so i moved the bushing DOWN so that it would stay at the higher position, hope that's not confusing.

    I have a slightly different door. Mine has aluminum stops at each end. There are 2 pieces of plastic sleeves (?) in the hinge assembly. The round sleeve is less stiff than the one I ordered and it is made of a translucent plastic material. The other piece is just a straight piece of the same material. Any thoughts. I bought the 66 inch version with the same measurement...I could not get it on the assembly at all...I ended up destroying it.

    Thanks for the video. Mine was a bit tough as the screws and hinge were quite stubborn to remove. Probably 20 years of hard water would do that. The manufacturer said they dont sell hinges and that the whole door needs to be replaced at around $300. I bought some JB Weld and plan to try it out this week. I will post a video as well. My shower door was slightly sagging on one side causing it to be more difficult to close. So I pulled out my plastic hinge like you described but it isn’t split at all. Any other reason it would still sag? The continuous hinge sleeve appears to be about one inch too short for the whole door, could that much cause an issue?

    • @ThisGuyProductions
      @ThisGuyProductions  Před 3 lety

      It could be due to a small hairline crack in the hinge near the top. You have to look really close to find it. It can also be due to a shift in the metal posts with the screws in them that hold that plastic hinge in place. They may have slipped. I have had some success reinstalling the door at a very slight angle then replacing the self tapping screw in a new position. In other words, you are installing the door angled slightly to compensate for the sag.

    • @ThisGuyProductions
      @ThisGuyProductions  Před 3 lety

      There are not leveling screws unfortunately. You may have a hairline crack in the metal hinge. I did and ended up using some JB weld to patch it. I did post a video about that. Another thing I plan to do soon is to reinstall the door using the self tapping screws currently in place, but instead of installing the door straight up and down, I will angle it slightly so that the other end of the door is slightly lifted. I will then drill the self tapping screw into a new spot. Its a last ditch effort to buy some more time until I need to replace the door all together.
