Wingspan is one of the greatest games for bringing people into the hobby. It’s accessible for a wide variety of experiences and gives enough strategy that you might wonder “what’s next?”. This is the list of the best games I believe can be great next steps into the hobby if you like Wingspan.

My fiance and I went on what I dubbed, the road to Ark Nova. We started with wingspan, so she could get used to playing with cards, we went to Earth, and finally tabled Ark Nova. It was a great natural progression, and it's funny that you articulated a similar idea in this video.
Nice 🙂 this particular series technically starts from x and then goes anywhere, but the idea of a series that is specifically trying to make its way towards x... That's been something -ive been meaning to do for a long time
Thanks for the Raising Robots shout out!
Of course!
Been hoping for a series like this!
Enjoy it 🙂 this is the third one so far, and more are coming
I introduced Earth to a Wingspan lover this weekend and it was a huge hit. I’m going to forward this video to her to give her other ideas.
Earth is an incredible game! Much better at keeping new players engaged.
That's awesome!
Great video. I love Wingspan and have tried all and own some of the games you’ve mentioned. I agree with Earth and Wingspan being similar, so similar that I didn’t keep Earth. I enjoyed it but Wingspan is better (in my humble opinion) as for another comparison … Gizmos is a fun engine builder, again for me personally it suffered compared to Wingspan but still a fun game. Thanks again.
I have played 6 of these 8 games. Might have to find Aquatica and Raising Robots to complete the set. ;)
I have 7! I thought he pegged me real well. I’ll consider getting raising robots.
I really enjoy the idea. Thank you. I will continue watching this series of video. I am interested in video for games like: Castles of Burgundy, Suburbia, Not Alone, Cryptid and Res Arcana.
Noted thank you :)
I have played all but two of these, Ark Nova and Raising Robots. I also own all 6 of them.
2024 challenge, don’t mention terraforming mars un one of your videos haha
Lol, I do 15 videos a week... I'm sure we can find one
I'd suggest Space Base, Imperial Settlers, and as a wilder choice, Evo, all of which have engine builder aspects, relatively simple concepts to teach, and excellent gameplay.
I haven't played Evo, for the other two are great
I would say Ares Expedition would be so much more accessible for those who enjoy Wingspan
It's not a bad choice
Raising Robots has replaced Wingspan for us. The engine feels more satisfying (and more connected) and the variable player powers make each play feel more varied than in Wingspan. And thanks to simultaneous play, it plays much faster and with up to 6 players (but it might feel a bit more multiplayer-solitaire-ish).
Race For The Galaxy is also very similar to Wingspan but with a lot more depth and replayability
That's also an excellent choice, absolutely
Good thing I watched, because I was going to ask where Earth was. Personally, I found Wingspan easier to teach, probably because there is more going on in Earth. Funny Terraforming Mars is here, since the people I taught Wingspan to are very familiar with TM.
I tried playing Ark Nova at PAX, and as a fan of Terraforming MARS, I really didn't like it. I thought the systems didn't mesh well together.
No Res Arcana???
I like wingspan but I don’t like think it is particularly well balanced, particularly with the expansions. I also feel like it needs a final round where you use the system you built. It still gets a decent amount of plays because it is available on console.
I prefer Aquatica or 51st State. I am interested to see what they do with Wyrmspan. The lack of dice already seems like an improvement.
I will always take aquatica over anything 🙂
DEI is another game that feels like Wingspan is hidden in the DNA. Buying the cards to enhance your abilities, trying to achieve missions, looking for engines...
8 games?! 2 more than the Pick 6 The DT offers, what a deal! haha
Lol to be fair, this was filmed weeks ago, I started doing this series about ago
@@BoardGameCo No worries, nothing meant by the comment. You are a big stats/econ/cost analysis etc. person so getting the same video, but with 2 more suggestions, and with only :24 more seconds of video watch time, this is a "deal". All just silly stuff. I watched both, and watch multiple channels so content merges and is similar to some extent - the hosts are what make the experience worth it.
Dice Tower did this yesterday. What a coincidence
Dice Tower did only 6, Alex knows more games. 🤣🤣🤣
Lol yep, and if you look at the games in the background, this was filmed awhile ago :) maybe 2-3 weeks ago.
@@BoardGameCo Yeah, you're good. I know you record these and save them for a rainy day. I guess with Wyrmspan coming, content creators are thinking the same thing. Great minds....
@@BobbyJuno lol, I'm 90% sure I filmed this before knowing Wyrmspan was coming.
@@BoardGameCo omg lol
Ark nova is pretty complex. I feel like wingspans main appeal is that it’s not overly complex but does offer some strategy for those regular gamers
Completely agree, but that's also why I specifically note that It's more complex and that in general this list kind of works the way up
How about Its a wonderfull world???
A solid game, honestly, depending on what factors anyone is comparing, there are so many options.
Interesting, don't start with the big box all in Everdell, yet as you and I, and most we liked Everdell and kept going getting all the expansions and probably sold those many boxes and expansions to get the big box. The point being get the big box b/c you will probably want it all anyways, and avoid selling the base game for less when you decide to get more of it. Is Everdell base + Pearlbrook "all you need" sure whatever, and yes that is a smaller and easier purchase, but you can sell the big box just the same so why not make one purchase instead of two? Obviously play something before you buy it so you actually know if you should/want to spend money on a game and not have to do this buy/sell tag game thing. Just thoughts. FYI I was someone who played Everdell twice literally a month before the big box KS so I did jump in all at once. Just a viewpoint to talk about, not making a stance/claim any one particular way.
Pick Eight?
lol, despite the timing...this is actually the 3rd one I've done :) I did Catan and Carcassonne already....I'm not saying who copied who....although odds are it's just a coincidence.
Whoops, Catan and TTR. Carc is coming.
I would have titled this list differently -- I think Wingspan is not a particularly good game, and that Raising Robots, in particular, was conceived as "Wingspan without the glaring flaws of Wingspan". In other words, some of these are games to try (or persuade others to try) *instead* of Wingspan.
Sure, I think ultimately the question is who is the list for. To me, the main point of the list is for people who really liked wingspan who want to find other games. But I also agreed that there's a different audience that may not have liked wingspan and them a different title and possibly a few different games, could be a very different conversation.
Eight games for you if you didn't like wingspan...
@@BoardGameCo Two videos for each game (If you liked x & If you didn't like x) haha easy video idea.
Also, 3 Minute Board Games puts at the end of his rules videos two suggestion type things like this "If you like x about the game check out y. And if you are into a, try out b"; an easy little thing that is a great add.
I do not understand the love for wingspan. I I know I'm in the minority, and people will flock (no pun intended) to say look how many copies it's sold. You could say the same for Monopoly, but I really just do not understand why Wingspan is so loved. Is it because it's easy to play, or is it liked because of the designer, or maybe theme? The mechanics are not new, are done better in multiple other better games and it is overly long. Again to each their own and different games for different folks, but this one of those games that I just don't see why it is so popular.
I don't disagree, while I enjoy it, I agree that I don't understand why it's as popular as it is... And also that doesn't matter. Ultimately it is, it's managed to find a connection point with so many, and in doing so, been a great ambassador for the hobby in a way that monopoly couldn't because of the fact that monopoly doesn't represent modern game mechanics
I feel the same way. It's not about hating what's popular. I just think the experience is mostly in the theme and art (which are great) but can wear off very quickly. Everything else is pretty much something we've seen before. It felt like a facebook or mobile game. I think the app makes more sense than owning the physical game, considering its nature. I don't own Everdell either. I think flamecraft, even as a lighter family game, is a better experience and offers the right amount of simplicity and length for games that are hardly interactive. But to each their own I guess!
The game is long for what it is. I like my multiplayer solataire as Simultaneous play, and if a game is asynchronous, it needs to have enough interaction to justify that. As far as "Card Tableu Engine Builders in Intermediate or Lower Complexity" i keep coming back to Race for the Galaxy, Earth, and It's a Wonderful World because the simultaneous play.
Wingspan too, you can need food, eggs, and the card to play something, which is 3 different resources, whereas RftG you pay for cards with cards. It's just elegant. 200% the game in 25% of the time.
I like it because it's fun
