    The hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 649 was an act of terrorism committed by a Palestinian group that took place between 22 and 23 February 1972. Eventually, all hostages on board the seized Boeing 747-230B were released when the West German government paid a ransom of US$5 million.

      Back in the late 60s and 70s there were many hijackings as airport security was in its early stages. It took 9/11 to finally get the government to pay for and provide better security at US airports. Before 9/11, Airlines had to pay for it. The DOT and FAA have been historically slow in providing adequate security at US airports.

    It's so unusual to see a hijacking that turned out peacefully. How they got all those explosive materials aboard the plane undetected is astounding to me, and they were reasonable terrorists and turned themselves in and weren't charged because they paid a million dollars to the authorities. No one was hurt! Most astounding! I'm sure they must have made a movie out of this. Someone might be tempted to say that crime pays, but the fruits of their crime and what was done with the rest of the ransom money was murderous and evil.

    • @chrisgardner4222
      @chrisgardner4222 Před rokem +1

      I'll begin by stating that I'm assuming that the contents of this video were meant to be truthful and factually accurate. So, with that premise in mind and, although your comments are already a year old, I still feel as if I might suggest that you appear to have made some erroneous assumptions.
      First of all, it was just, "according to Israel" that the hijackers paid 1 million to the South Yemeni authorities to grant their release. Would you consider that South Yemeni might possibly have been sympathetic to the hijackers, in regards to their political motives? Or, maybe you're too quick to trust the word of Israel, particularly in light of the fact that the Israeli government has been at odds with the PFLP , for many decades, as it's been continually annexing/stealing land granted to the Palestinian people following WWII while, at the some time, committing numerous other human rights violations against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank?
      Secondly, the German publication, Der Spiegel, simply "speculated" that the remaining 4 million dollars was used to fund the Lod Airport massacre in 1972. I might consider that Der Spiegel's motive was to connect the hijackers to a totally different event, which had nothing to do with the hijacking, but involved numerous random killings, which certainly didn't appear to align with the political motives of the hijackers. "Speculations" should never be construed as statements of fact. The hijackers might have a totally different account as to how the remaining 4 million was spent.
      I think the fact that the hijackers chose to not hurt or kill anyone is very significant, in that it speaks volumes as to what appears to have been their primary motive. They showed the world that a nation, or group of nations, that decide to unilaterally subjugate another nation or ethnic race of people, may eventually suffer the consequences, if no other peaceful options have proven to be available to those who are suffering.
      Finally, I'd like to add one further comment that I believe is very appropriate to this hijacking, even though there's 29 years of separation between the two events.
      On September 11, 2001 we suffered the most heinous crime that's ever been perpetrated on American soil. It involved the hijacking of not one, but four commercial airliners. Although there were many debatable aspects of the overall puzzle, surrounding the events of 9/11, that appear to have been purposely ignored and/or concealed, which were never brought into a more legitimate, transparent focus, nevertheless, wasn't that event, in one major way, very similar to this hijacking in 1972? Both were a "wake up" moment for the entire world to see and realize that, even powerfully strong nations, such as the U.S., will always have an "Achilles Heel"?

    I know that by saying this it could possibly be a death sentence to innocent people but under NO circumstances should hijackers demands b met. For those in this comment section saying no one was hurt, I’d say that’s a ignorant statement at the least. They took the money to help plan another assault that killed people. And let’s forget that people were killed. To me the moment a person loses their sense of security or their sense of “family protector” , then that scenario is a horrible one , without the loss of life. The people that live through these events sometimes never recover. And nobody is ever the same after this type of event. The indirect damage is astronomical. Not 1 demand by any hijacker should ever be met. Ever. Yes if I’m on that hijacked plane yes I feel the same and even more so then. If people know in advance that no matter ho much violence you threaten or act out you will not get any demands met, it’ll stop damn near all of the hijackings. The ones it want stop are the ones that are either just off their rockers or are doing this as some suicide mission for (religion, revenge, insurance for family,etc...) and don’t want money or anything else in exchange. They just want carnage for the hell of it which is an entire different can of worms compared to organizations wanting funding to continue to do this repeatedly.

Now I DO know this how certain people (you) will and do act under circumstances such as ridiculing someone else’s OPINION that you disagree with. That’s what you call ridiculous hiding behind my keyboard while I run my pie hole about some strangers OPINION bravado. I like leaving statements about my ideas thoughts and beliefs and reading others opinions. This is how we learn better ways.
