      The FO was alert and smart enough to warn the captain. What else could he do. Puzzling that the investigators thought it relevant that the approach glide had been too steep.
    Whether it was 3 degrees or 5, it brought the flight to "minimums" with the runway in sight. The Captain had all his instruments, plus a synthetic voice calling out his altitude, plus a colleague who said to pull up. He was clearly to blame for failing to do so.
    That's unless there was something like a wind shear; a sudden down-draft that prevented pull-up. But the report of the investigators didn't mention that.
    Incidentally, what's the protocol: if a junior sees a danger soon enough to point it out twice, might he not take action himself and over-ride the senior pilot? That might place his career at risk, but in this case it would have prevented the crash. Unless there was that wind-shear.

    • @peteconrad2077
      @peteconrad2077 Před 3 lety

      It makes a big difference. On a steep approach you have less time to react, much more energy to manage and much lower margin for error. Please don’t act like you know more than the investigators. You don’t.

    The captain was unsure of what the PAPI Lights were indicating? They only convey four possible messages:
    You’re too high.
    You’re too low.
    You’re on the proper path.
    You need to go around or find another method of determining your glide slope.
    There is really no ambiguity. Even in the event of a malfunction of the PAPI Lights they’re telling you to go around or find some other method of determining your approach angle.

    • @peteconrad2077
      @peteconrad2077 Před 3 lety

      It’s not that simple.
      There are many formats of visual slope indicator which indicate slope in different ways. Maybe this was one of the less logical ones. But the big point is that poorly maintained PAPIs are often ambiguous as they can have faded colour on the red or a misaligned cell. Both is these can cause confusion.
      In short, don’t assume that because PAPI is designed to work as you describe that that’s an absolute. It isn’t. This is the kind of error that sim pilots make.

    Well done Allec sir. This can help the future pilots to stop making these errors. I don't know why the owner simply ordered the 737-700s quickly but what he did was wrong.
    He could have bought a simulator for training the turboprop pilots to jet pilots before the 737-700s are ordered.
    I feel bad for the pilots that they only get weeks of training instead of a year. And I also feel bad that they had these illusions like the Gulf Air Flight 072.

      VOR - VHF omnidirectional radio range. A beacon that signal to the airborne equipment which beating the aircraft is in from its location.
      DME - Distance Measuring Equipment. Uses radio pulses to measure the distance between the aircraft and the ground station. Often located with a VOR, in which case it’s usually referred to as VOR/DME.
      FMC - Flight Management Computer. Computer that manages the route. Has a display that shows the route including direction and distance, fuel needed at various points and lots of other information. The route can be inserted an modified by the pilot. Also provides navigation information to the autopilot allowing the autopilot to fly the route. Many approaches are flown using the FMC with GPS for navigation these days.
