- Is the BRICS Still Relevant? | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
World leaders will gather in Johannesburg for the 15th annual BRICS summit on August 22. But as the group looks at expansion, the question remains is the BRICS too divided to make a difference? And should India leave the bloc or stay in it? Palki Sharma tells you on Between the Lines.

Do you think the BRICS is still relevant in today’s world? Comment below and let us know.
BRICS IS RELEVANT BUT NOT INDIA. IT IS BETTER FOR INDIA TO LEAVE THAN TO BE KICK OUT.
Please be my teacher....😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 I want u as my coach........bcz I like u so much ur such a good a describing things.....
India must never think tht US will allow them to rise n threaten US domination.
Many countries want in as they see benefits in it. India is in dilemma. It is a loss for India to leave. Most new members would be just as influential as India once they join. If India leaves, it becomes like RCEP. It is not a loss to BRICS rather than for India. The wiser decision would be to stay. India should not dream that USA is really a friend, there is no friendship. It is just geopolitical need which can be discarded once the agenda is achieved. Within BRICS, slowly but surely it would benefit India in long term, and members would surely pay sincere respect to India as a big country.
With or without India BRICS will thrive because it's by divine appointment
It's time for the BRICS - New World Order to establish a default reserve currency or consider returning to the gold standard. Dealing with daily fluctuations in exchange rates for each country's currency would lead to excessive chaos.
Investors should be cautious with their investments, especially in times of inflation. Achieving substantial returns during economic challenges often requires the guidance of a professional or a trusted advisor.
I strongly agree. Relying on an investment coach for daily decisions minimises risks and enhances returns. I've earned over a million dollars with their guidance over two years.
How can I get in touch with your advisor? I'm looking for a more effective investment strategy for my savings.
My CFA, Stacey Lee Decker, is highly esteemed for her proficiency and deep expertise in the financial market. She possesses an in-depth knowledge of portfolio diversification and is considered an authority in this field.
Fascinating. I'm currently on her webpage, conducting my research. She appears to be quite skilled. I've sent her an email and scheduled a phone call.
I used to think every investor went broke during recessions, meanwhile some make millions. I also thought everybody went out of business during the Great Depression, but some went more into business. Bottom line, there's always depression for some, and profit for others, it all starts from having the right mindset. That said, I've set asides $250k to invest for future, unfortunately l'm a complete noob.
The market has gone berserk! regardless of experience level, everyone needs a sort of coach at some point to thrive forward.
True, A lot of folks downplay the role of professionals until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for license advisors and came across someone of due diligence, helped a lot to grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to approx. $850k so far.
How can I contact your
coach as my portfolio is dwindling?
Can't divulge much, it's only right you do your due diligence. I'm been guided by Olivia Maria Lucas and most likely, the internet is where to find her deets.
Thank you for this tip. It was easy to find your coach. Did my due diligence on her before scheduling a phone call with her. She truly seems proficient considering her résumé.
Indians are the most successful demographic in US, hold political positions and own some of the most powerful companies. This does not happen in Russia or China. why should India want US to collapse 🤦🏽♂️
India is the kid without teamwork skills. India comes to see the teacher 30 minutes after starting a group project and it is already complaining about members of the group.
In my opinion, countries that are not committed to the mission of this grouping should leave. It will enable the rest to move forward without hindrance. So, India should seriously review her relationship with the current members and that recently enticed by the USA if she wants in or out. She must remember that she will be their stumbling block if she is thinking of having the best of both worlds.
Really worried about your crypto portfolio lol
You cannot leave brics...russia dont like being rejected. The bombs will fall.
For BRICS to work it has to become transparent, reliable and trustworthy. None of those qualities are possessed by BRICS if they have China or Russia on the center.
There are many countries who want to join. So if India wants to leave, they should do so. So that other countries that are pushing can easily come in. BRICS has to stop USA.
@@kwadwoyeboah6476 you can easily get into brics...but you cannot get out. Russia will bomb you.
In any organisation, if any member does not want to see that organisation progress or against the charter of that organisation, then it is only logical and dignify to leave. Otherwise, it is selfish and even evil to stay put to play the spoiler role to put harm into that organisation's progression.
Well said
yes. you are right.
The group is not divided. ONLY you Índia is talking about it because of your beef with China. Get a life 😂🥸
india is doing same. trying to stop BRICS progress in every step.
Strongly suggest BRICS should kick India out immediately
India's intelligence and strong independence has always been admirable. Teaming up with Russia and China doesn't sertheir economic interests in my opinion
People here in SA finally understood and took BRICS seriously, during this summit. And many where asking the same questions that Palki ia aaking of India. Is BRICS relevant? What do we stand to gain? Etc, etc.
Irrespective of what you think of BRICS and you view that the West can never be toppled. She summed it up very beautifully at the end: " It is always better to be on the room, than to be out."
That's why we all need to make BRICS workse.
India doesn’t want a new currency for fear of its own currency, India doesn’t want growth for fear of China, India doesn’t want this and India doesn’t want that. All of these new India’s directions after Moldi visit to DC and Paris. It seems to me India is our new problem. We must address these issues with India if she’s genuinely against BRICS expansion and new currency or she wants to continue serving DC and PARIS which we understand wrt to QUAD aka anti china union. And I don’t trust Sharma’s 😊 coverage wrt BRICS leaders meeting in South Africa, she may hit more on the divide more than anything. And this too I understand.
😂
😂😂😂
Incompetent n corrupt leaders with their small minds n overblown egos r just some of the reasons why India has fallen so far behind China in almost every sphere of development.
India is very jealous of the big brother China 😂
Hers was a garden-variety narrative which is very characteristic of Indian bureaucracy and elites. Which has taken its intellectual cue, from the times of Nehru, from West. Since it is also true that most of the money of Indian elites, is in dollars, plus India does not have any serious homegrown defence manufacturing capacity, unlike Russia and China, since, why work on growing a backbone, when we can easily get kickbacks and defence equipment from our holy Western masters.
It is better to leave if India try to play both side,no country wants to be betrayed later by India.
india should leave out of morality and honesty.
Bingo!
The brics right now is merely turning In to a chinese led war against the west. What exactly does india or other countries gain from this? Only ccp reap the benefits
India will always seek to enrich itself first without paying consideration to others. And India has good ties with the US and it could sabotage the rest at some stage.
India has never betrayed any country but been betrayed itself repeatedly. If India leaves it's Brics loss. China has the same agenda Britain and Europe had to colonise. India and Brazil are an important balancer. Personally I think India is better off without Brics. It has more to lose than gain. 51 other countries are there surviving so are most countries out of Brics. It's just a club really not a force to challenge right now by a long short. It has not dumbed the dollar and never will as china is risk averse. The only benefit is they agree to deal in their own currencies. There is more fluff around Brics but not much substance. It's not as if these countries don't deal independently anyway and after over decades nothing really to see except giving money to a bank mostly from more powerful countries and to weaker countries that are corrupt like SA. So no loss to India only mostly benefit in leaving. India has it's own relationships anyway. It adds value to every group. India has the largest population and a markets as big as the entire population of Africa. Certainly larger than every other Brics member. So actually Brics will have to have many more African countries and other countries for decrease in gdo size population size etc if India leaves. China dominating or Russia is not progress it's surrendering sovereignty and where corruption and bribery and the same as what west did to Africa. No sovereignty. India in the other hand is independent and not interested in colonising. Nor is Brazil. Yet SA adds no value really to this group or rather better choices of African countries to partner with independently.
Always interesting to hear an Indian perspective. Thank you.
Yes, pls leave BRICS. Dont become a trouble maker in BRICS' progress with hidden intentions.
Shutt Up 😡👹
We can replace India with Iran so it will still be BRICS
both sco and brics membership is a tool for us to put tension for china.....indian troops are waiting for chinese invasion of taiwan.....then india will attack china....both usa and india will defeat china and new ussr will happen.
Brics is great for India to piss china off.
We don't want to miss this fun.
Haha the ape trying to attack the human, come please come and try you apes
India is the only one that uses the BRICS to oppose China. China did not use the BRICS to oppose India. India in South Asia withdraws, and Indonesia in Southeast Asia joins, which is the perfect solution.
India opposes the expansion of the BRICS, and India is a traitor to the BRICS. More than 40 countries around the world are queuing up to join the BRICS.
India has joined the QUAD led by the Anglo-Saxon Group, and India has joined the Anglo-Saxon Group to encircle China and prepare to become Ukraine in Asia. India will purchase a large amount of arms from the United States, and the United States will transfer advanced fighter engine technology to India, and Russia will soon lose India's arms market.
Whether it is for interests or for glory, India should take the initiative to withdraw from the BRICS before being kicked out.

India might be interested by the US proposal to have it a permanent member of the security council, and also keep legs in the West for obvious reasons. I hope India will develop BRICS, because at the end when India starts to be bid, the West will go after. Long term view is the wise decision.
The US can no longer be trusted.....
Either way india will B a joker in d political pack of cards as usual.

India should just look into her distant past. She used to be a super power in the ASEAN region. I just don't understand why India had forgotten her past. India should join Asean. China will be very angry. India has historical connection with most South East Asia countries. Besides, India has common interest w/ Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Philippines. Totally agree with your point on quad.
India can't say they don't want to be isolated into either camp but actively part of a Anti Western bloc which the BRICS is clearly and the Quad which is anti China. (I also understand the geopolitical competition and border disputes India has with China which is understandable)

As an Indian, I find this thought of leaving BRICS ridiculously horrifying 💀
Good for India for not picking sides. You're an independent country. You got great people. You're very smart. Continue to be that country#Onelove❤🎉
No. Not trustworthy. Like Turkey. India has to pick a side.
The only place where it lacks unity is India doesn't want to see China playing the dominant role, so came up with these execuses. However the reality is China is the dominant trading and manufacturing power and second largest economy, India is not able to change that. Unless India pulls out, or come to terms with the reality working with BRICS, there is no way out.
China and USA both need India more... Anyside India tilts is a clear winner
Exactly. That's being petty-minded in wanting only self-interests at the expense of others who want to participate in the development and cooperative projects..
India is overrating itself, so India doesn't have unemployment issues.... There is too much emotions from Indian media when it comes to China... Whether India likes it or not, China will have a dominant role to play in any group India and China belongs to.... The chines economy is like 5 times bigger than that of India.... Gdp growth is not just by numbers but by the share maturity of the Chinese economy, india's is not anywhere close to the depth and diversity of the Chinese economy, the only country that beats the chines economy in this regard is the US and even they are not going to be there for long.
Highlighting everyone's limitations and pretending india's is any better is laughable....

"India is not able to change that" I don't think so, China's manufacturing power is decreasing and which countries are benefit the most: India and Mexico. India has the potential to be the biggest economy by 2050.
Realistically India is far too much of a break and a trojan horse for the further constructive development of BRICS. The I should stand for Iran and or Indonesia instead in the future. India can remain of course under + but the organisation must go ahead with integration with possibilities for individual countries to opt out on specific integration areas so not to block development of the organisation as a whole. Certain minimum criteria for membership should be established as well - it cannot be that a NATO members thinks it can join BRICS like Turkey obviously does.

Both India and brazil is not interested in a chinese led war against the western world. I can understand that you want that, but this is not going to happen with brazil nor India. Congratulations to brics, 6 new members bringing membership to 11 next year.
Maybe a change of name?

Thank you for outlining the issues so clearly and succinctly. From South Africa's point of view, the expansion of trade into Africa via a Free Trade Association, and the development of a common unit currency outside of the USD is very important to resolve the employment crisis.
Well it's time for the BRICS- New World Order to come up with a default reserve currency or simply go back to gold as the reserve. It will be too chaotic for each country to trade in their respective currencies with the daily change in exchange rates.

The video explains quite well, unlike dozens of others, that BRICS isn't really a thing. It's not a treaty, it's not an union, it's not an alliance, it's not a trade group. It's a group of countries that agree on a few things and disagree on others. I don't see how it can have real relevance now or in the future.
It’s just anti Americans playing politcs 😂😂😂 they make me laugh
the plan of BRICS is to support the currency of BRICS by commodities. Currently, USD is overvalued and the Govt. of the USA is in Debts. But India should leave the BRICS because China & Rassia are leading it. India should not leave the BRICS because it would benefit Indians at a larger scale. It could benefit Indians because India is a big country. But in the BRICS China & Rassia won't give special space to India.
It depends. If India wants to continue supporting the American Dollar hegemony. Or if India respect its own power and Sovereignty.
I think the reason why India will fear BRICS expansion has do with it's inability to meet the demand of an expanded group. While China on the other hand, sits in a position that, even the West is afraid to break away from.
India is the only economical bright spot in BRICS at present. The grouping will suffer more than India if India leaves. Your kind of thinking based on religious fanaticism or political vendetta defeats the very purpose of BRICS. India should leave to give BRICS and other countries that want to join the opportunity to achieve its potential. India is always a outlier just like RCEP.
China is an economic super power and thats the reality whether India chooses to stay in BRICS or not , it won't affect China's position . The more & more countries want to join BRICS is that they are fed up of being dictated by The West . I personally believe India can benefit hugely from forging mutually beneficial cooperation with these countries. India shod continue its pragmatic approach to ita foreign policy as it has been beneficial to it as recently as getting cheap oil from Russia & investments from USA.
china is not a economic super power, economic data of china is not reliable, suffering from deflation. a supplier cannot and will not overturn buyers. china was the manufacturing plant of the world, and west realize one fundamental truth after pandemic, placing all eggs in one basket is not good.
Military tech is decades after West especially now when Sweden joins NATO they where India's sole supplier of high-end Military technology. Russia's tech is garbage in comparison.

Modi is working for the US as he can slow down brics!!
For the foreseeable future, China will remain the world's most dominating leader in economy (real GDP #1 since 2017, based on purchasing power parity), technology, development, finance, trade, infrastructures and defence, not only among the BRICS members, but also in the world, particularly over the US, EU and Japan.
BRICS members will have a better chance to stand up against the US, EU and UK, under China's influence on defence, finance, trade and development. However, as BRICS progress, the influence of India will most definitely grow significantly. And this progress will depend very much on the progress of per capita income. China will double per capita to $30000 in ten years and India will triple to $10000 in ten years. And the gap between the two will narrow in a generation. China will not be able further double to $60000 without an India on $30000.
As founding member, India will have to demonstrate to the rest as how to sort out the differences among members. China deployed four brigades along the border with India in 2020. India deployed 200,000-300000 troops under US pressure. But the US would not join India to fight against China. The US simply
dared not go to war against China, particularly on land. Hence the US turned to Ukraine.
China has no intention to fight any proxy war against the US. China only targets to fight the US direct. And this way, China can and will force the US into submission for peace, without firing a shot. The US simply dares not take on China. This is why the US wants Japan, Australia and India to fight proxy wars against China.
Come on India, you don't want to hang out with those squares, you know you're cooler than them.
It's always easier to agree on what you're against, than what you are for...

@@kingkamaro9442 Yea. It'll become the counter organisation to NATO. Two enemy sides, just like old times.
India should look at it "Looking East" agenda policy. If India choose to leave then it cannot work with ASEAN and will lose strategic position in South East Asia long-term.
"India is too agitated to make a quick move and does not think before deciding on consequences for its country and people."
Very sensible pragmatic evaluation.... again.... "All is not as it seems..."
It would be absolutely foolish for India to leave BRICS. If India chooses to do this, the value of their currency falls with the rest of the western Fiat system.
For BRICS to work though, countries like India and China have to put aside their differences and put in efforts …
Exactly.
I honestly don't see much hope in that one
@@robrak3569if you’ve ever done business with an Indian then you would know that they seldom compromise. The only course for BRICS to move forward is to remove India.
It is wise for India to leave BRICS. It's just another form of Chinese debt trap.
If any country does not find any advantage, it should go gentlemanly and let the others proceed without hindrance. The idea of BRICS is to have win-win transactions amongst the members. Certainly this is very difficult to achieve with all the members every time. Differences will always exist and each member should navigate as far as possible. Certainly the status quo of the existing economic, financial, political, as well as international system is proving to be obsolete today and hence the creation of BRICS.
Well said...BRICS as stated early in the union formation was the cry of WIN-Win and if any discrepancies that arise and find you are the one that doesn't agree just leave but do not burn the house down.
Strongly suggest BRICS should kick India out immediately
Okay wumao
WIN win for China. They don’t Care about India
India should show benign leadership. It is vital to have positive, complimentary relationships that take the world forward in peace.
India seems capable of reflecting those qualities.
Everyone can prosper with the right attitude and that's what's needed. Building wealth with weapons and the misery it brings is obscene.
Greed and advantage taking are not qualities to be admired.
Accommodation, understanding, fairness and goodwill are the bonds needed.
Palki mam why do you have this doubt? CNN putting your test on table to read?
Be objective by stopping comparing India with China because China's economy is the second largest in the world, and its influence in the world is far above India, You should weigh India's economy with countries like Qatar, KSA, etc. If the Indian economy is doing better, there would not be immigrants from India scattered worldwide. Even in small countries like Malaysian and Brunei. BRICS will benefit India beyond your explanation. You should note that BRICS can exist without India because whatever India offers can be substituted by other candidates.
china already surpassed the united states when it comes to economy. only thing left for USA is the military and it is in slow decay...the new superpower will be africa, the new gold backed currency will be accepted by majority of people and africa got plenty of gold left if it fights back the colonizers. The question should be, is India still relevant to the BRICS, and the answer is no, India is always a tool for the western powers to use as a spoiler, India plays that role during colonization, when Indians where imported to the Caribbean to be used as a buffer between the British and the newly emancipated Africans slaves, the British would place these Indians in high places,in their colonial administration, for example ,you would see them as head of police and army units, and that legacy is still present in the Caribbean today.
The British always uses the rule “Divide and Rule” and India and other former colonies were victim of it.
But Indians inherently are not like that.we believe in “Vasudeva Kutumbaka” that means world is one. We value humanity more. We believe in equal partnership.we never exploit other country’s resources. We never believe in forcing our religion on others.
India under Modiji is completely dismantled from colonialism.we are searching and learning our true hindu values from our ancient scriptures and true history.
But there are few colonial mindset fellows who think highly of western culture. There always two sides in a coin.
On that note, I assure you that Modiji will become our PM once again in 2024 because we see developments everywhere in India. He is uniting the whole India on basis of our culture .
Donating covid vaccines amidst pandemic, helping countries on humanitarian basis, equal partnership in Africa are few examples of the good work of India.
Surely your problem will get solved in coming years ..
The question should be, what capability you have to say Bharat is relevant or not ? Are you president or anything.
Bharat is more than relevant to BRICS. If Bharat leaves BRICS is nothing.

It's very important that leading middle-income countries team up for their mutual benefits, but what would be the ideal formula? I support the idea to form a group of countries which challenge western hegemony, but are not anti-western or pro-western, like India for example. It would be a bit in the style of the non-aligned movement, but with less members and with more clout and decisiveness ...

China want’s India to stop doing business with the US which means them losing trillions .
No loyalty is key, India should leave
Only time will tell. The shifting dynamics of international politics are sometimes startlingly unpredictable. One thing remains certain: a unipolar worldview is unsustainable in a multifaceted world.
I think it is sad that India is not friends with China. It is the British Empire that created the border dispute. It is imperialist US and EU that want to keep these countries divided.
Forgive me for saying this but India is the stick that has got caught in the wheel. Their friends are not in the West. Asia is a much stronger place with unity between other Asian countries. Asis, Africa and South America havecbeen kept down by West European empires who also control USA. These countries will be much stronger with India's loyality to BRICS
Strongly suggest BRICS should kick India out immediately

Mingling currency is close exchange?
Difference will exist in any groupings. However the bigger the group the better it is to better their interests. The other is there cannot be separation of economics from politics. US uses economics, its USD reserve currency status, to sanction others in order to destroy or control other countries. Unfortunately India phrases all its move to counter China rather than for the groups' good

True. Better to be a master than a obedient servant of the cunning west
India cannot take the head of BRICS.
Yes, it is better to be in the room but if the members in the room become more diverse and numerous, it might be suitable for India to leave or be asked to leave to allow the remaining 40 countries to attempt a new world order without India. The division in BRICS is mainly caused by India and it is likely that the rest of the countries see the historic opportunity and no longer want to wait for India's attempts to play both sides. In the end, India runs a high risk to be sitting in between all chairs and is seen as a flaky and unreliable entity that one is better off staying away from. I believe that is what your video really says. INda wants to benefit from USA, BRICS, its own relationships and by attempting to do so is angering everybody when the time comes to choose a side.
