    @18:20. When talking about balancing 2 belts sides to 1, your design here still has the same flaw if the belt feeding is full. In your example it shows only the left hand side of the belt out of the splitter moving as the right hand side cannot find a gap to insert. There are example single side belt balancers in factorio.school, but basically split again, use 2 "undergroundies" to block each side and join back using another splitter, essentially the same as balancing 2 belts to 1. In later scenarios where you're feeding belts from trains via chests, the uneven draw will mean half the chests empty faster slowing down unloading

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      You are missing the point of what I was talking about in that example. Using the underground will cause a different effect than a reverse belt on the other side.

    • @robslaney3729
      @robslaney3729 Před 3 lety

      If the source belt is NOT full, yes it will be different. If it's saturated, as is usually the case in a BUS design, then the same result will be observed. Taking half a belt can be tricky to balance upstream. If am upstream belt is being directly feed ( and saturated ) by assemblers from both sides then half will be working, half will be idle as there will be no gap to insert to one 1 side until the first side drains.

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      @@robslaney3729 It doesn't matter if it's full or not. Downstream belts will have the same split and also be able to take from both lanes.

    You actually mixed up the ratio with electric engines and robot frames. You actually need twice the robot frames, instead of twice the electric engines :D

  • @Thrawen
    @Thrawen Před rokem

    At 20:54 you say half the crafting time half the machines but its actually half the crafting time -> twice the machines. So you have an error in your ratio and are producing 4 times the engines you need to feed the robots frames you are making. To utilize the amount of engines you make you need 16 assemblers making frames.

    If the chest from i.e. belt production are storage chests with the right information of what to store, you have your i.e. yellow belt storage and overproduction in one spot. Which is way better then having a storage chest somewhere else with all the deconstructed yellow belt. This way also the obsolete yellow belt gets fed into red belt production.
    One can eliminate overproduction and spread out storage of many items with that.

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      I prefer buffers for those. In general, one should not need many storage chests in the factory, maybe 4 at most.

  • @benmrii
    @benmrii Před 3 lety

    Thanks to your guides I am finally beginning to understand circuit networks and conditions, so I get what's happening when you are using the pair of arithmetic combinators, but I'm unclear on why the second condition is important (If there are less than 10 available, make more). Is that simply planning ahead for bot based transport and other activities? Acknowledging that if and when the moment comes that all 1000 existing logistic bots are engaged in regular activities you make more?

  • @theirreverentrev
    @theirreverentrev Před 3 lety +2

    I appreciate you taking the time to walk through your reasoning on things, and I agree with so many as I'm learning the game, but if I understand it correctly, I'm wondering if you're not shooting yourself in the foot a bit by your lovely mall placing its production into passive provider chests vs. storage chests. Even though it is tedious to filter them, wouldn't the deconstructed items being placed in them go a long way to limiting unnecessary production? For example, when you upgrade the mall to red belts, the yellow belts removed would go into the storage chest in the mall removing the requirement to produce a set of fresh yellow belts in the production of red belts while piles of yellow belts sit languishing in random storage chests. I'm wondering if you - or someone - can help me understand the rationale behind passive provider chests in this situation.

    • @LVRugger
      @LVRugger Před 3 lety +1

      Once she researches the logistics network tech she will have access to buffer chests. These can act like storage chests (say for yellow belts) as well as request them from storage. She will replace those passive provider chests with buffer chests soon. Don't worry, the ones going into storage right now will be used up soon. As she said in the video, she could use storage chests and filter them, but she doesn't want to go through all of them and set the filters to prevent them from filling up with other products.
      I used this mall in my current playthrough - I ended up using filtered storage chests at this stage where she used the passive providers. I will upgrade them to buffer chests when I unlock that tech (later today when I actually am playing).

    • @theirreverentrev
      @theirreverentrev Před 3 lety +1

      @@LVRugger Thank you. I see buffer chests as something that allows faster construction in an area - i.e., a buffer chest filtered to be filled with walls and turrets for a base expansion so the logistics bots make the initial delivery and allow construction bots to pull from there rather than running back and forth to the mall for stuff. I am not clear on why buffer chests would be better in a mall than storage chests, though it sounds like you're agreeing with me on storage chests vs. passive providers in a mall at least when those are your only two options. I'm sure those items taken apart in the red belt upgrade will get used eventually, but I don't get why not now, beyond perhaps wanting a more interesting video that doesn't include a tedious filtering of a few dozen chests. But beyond the entertainment factor, I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing some part of their functionality, because I feel passive providers are a significant downgrade to what filtered storage chests can do in that situation. Appreciate the reply, and if you can help me understand why buffer chests (eventually) over storage in the mall I'd appreciate it (though that, too, might simply be a choice for entertainment).

    • @LVRugger
      @LVRugger Před 3 lety +1

      Buffer chests will request items from the network. If you set the request to say 1000 yellow belts, and the circuit condition on the inserter to say 500, then the bots will deliver all the belts from storage before the assembler is tasked to make more. Those yellow belts in storage will get used and soon.

    • @theirreverentrev
      @theirreverentrev Před 3 lety +1

      @@LVRugger I get that. And I don't mean to be argumentative, but how is that better than a storage chest? Especially since buffer chests won't pull from other buffer chests, so again it seems like a less viable option to put buffer chests there rather than storage, especially since a) you will need to set a filter then anyways, so what time do you save doing the same thing later and b) you then wouldn't be able to utilize buffer chests later on to pull from your mall, which seems exactly what they're good for. I am just trying to figure out why passive providers or buffer chests in a place that seems the perfect spot for storage. I appreciate the discussion and input. Thanks!

    • @theirreverentrev
      @theirreverentrev Před 3 lety

      @@cf453 That's an interesting scenario I hadn't considered. I'm not convinced it makes buffer chests better still since a full storage with overflow storage for those situations still feels like the better option if you ever plan to utilize buffer chests for faster expansion (as buffer chests don't fill from other buffer chests) and unless the "random storage" is super close and your bots are super fast, you're still running into the issue of crafting unnecessarily. But I appreciate the scenario; it helps me plan. Perhaps, as you suggested in the other comment, a combination of buffer chests feeding into the primary storage chest for items that are used in massive amounts. Thanks for the input!

For me, the game is about building a factory, not hand-chopping trees, and I just want to do that as efficiently as possible. It makes the game more fun and I can get my ideas to work faster instead of spending too much time on activities that are not enjoyable to me.
