- The Mercedes 280 E /8 was aimed at customers for whom the S Class was just beyond reach. The /8 series reached its zenith in 1972 with the 280 E sedan, powered by a newly developed 2.8-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine.

My grand father had one of these when I was a kid. We called it “Der Bueffel” (sp?) or “The Buffalo” because it was practically unstoppable; we loved that car!
The best car I have owned, extremely reliable. Unfortunately they were the worst MB for rust protection.

Ive got one.. yellow 1974...fully optioned..sunroof etc..and i didnt pay the European premium price..cos it came from New Zealand.

the 2,8 liter wasnt the biggest...the 240 D 3.0 was bigger

What do you expect,it's the early 70's....gasmilage of US build cars was a LOT worse,in those days...and this one was way more reliable....
7 km/L modestly driven. But even the dead slow 200D with 55 hp would consume 10 L/100 km Diesel, sooting like crazy.
@@franktechmaniac7488 wrong..was possible to drive my 200 D with 6,9 liter...but i changed the engine to 240 D ..now he need 8,5 liter..i own this car close to 29 years
chevymarioana On the german Autobahn you would almost constantly go full throttle with /8 200 D. Otherwise the big trucks would start pushing you with that "migrating dune" off the road. 6.9 L were possible, but only on flat terrain and country side roads. However, the /8 was a very comfortable ride.

"Most of the 280ties had a 4 cylinder engine under the hood" Rubbish. The 280 (W114) was a 6 cylinder. I believe you want to say that most of the /8 had a 4 cylinder (W115). And that was not, becuase the owners were not "ready" for the S-class (which officially came in 1972, before there was no S-class, just an S). They just could not afford the bigger car.
