I bought E346 LPY, a 1988 190 2.5 diesel 190 for £3,300 in May 1999. The car had 132,000 miles on the clock. I then drove that car virtually every day until January 2020, when someone crashed into the back of my 190 while it was stationary on a slip road waiting to join a very busy A1 near Offord Darcy in Cambs. Sadly my lovely ivory 190 was written off - Cat B, by which time it had done 348,000 miles. In all the years I had that car, it only had batteries, an alternator, engine mounts, V belt and timing chain renewed in the engine bayEverything else was the same as the day it left the factory. Of course it had posts of consumables like suspension, tyres and brakes etc. I always changed the oil and filter myself on the nose at every 5000 miles.
I did find the car rusted out in the same places periodically - rear wheel arches, rear jacking points, near side inner wing. I had to have it welded several times. Maybe this was because it was my only car and was on the road 365 days a year in all weathers. My 190 never left me stranded and even when it did have the odd issue when out driving, it always got me home.
That car was a big part of my life and I still think about it and miss it!
I now drive a VW Passat b5.5 estate AWX 130 TDI. Its utter reliability and honesty reminds me of my old Mercedes. The Passat is galvanised and so does not have any rust problems…..not even the front arches.
I have owned and driven just two cars in the last 25 years and 261,000 miles and they have both been absolutely superb.
You will never see me in a modern car, with all those expensive sensors and electronics to go wrong and empty my wallet! Old is gold and more reliable if properly maintained.

A work colleague had worked in Germany in the late 80's and brought a 190E with him, that car was such an unattainable dream for the rest of us.

This old mercedes was and still is something special. Such solid builds, it's a pleasure to work on these models in the dealership althought these are before my time.
@Toad-ir1zk My 209 is converted to lpg, it's also below 2000cc- low tax. And I bought it for 5k last year I'm a car mechanic and hobbyist machinist, so virtually no running costs.
Many dream about that era of Mercs. This and the W124 and R129 have the rep of being the last engineer rather than accountant-built cars. No idea if that's true, but they all subjectively seem more solid than those that came later. How I wish I'd been brave and bought that 2.3-16 I had my eye on way back when.
Funny you mentioned that this car would make a great taxi, it did in fact! Here in Lisbon, Portugal they were basically the gold-standard for taxi cars all the way until the mid 2010s! They were mostly replaced either by newer Mercedes models or more recently by EVs, but if you're lucky you'll still find some older taxi drivers rocking one of these and their characteristic leather seats :)
As a kiwi i ended up in Copenhagen during my OE in the mid-80s and all of the taxis were Merc 190s. I found it seriously cool and very flash!!
Ah yes, I have seen them around on my trips to Europe! This car and the W123 seem to be the favourites :) I would absolutely love to get a taxi ride in one
Landed in madeira last year and to my joy the next cab on the rank was a 190 taxi. My wife was less impressed

I've had three 190s since 2009. They are pretty much fuss free, and a dream to work on. I can't recall a bolt shearing off in 15 years of DIY maintenance - everything about these was quality.

I daily a 1992 2.3 190E and I love it. Only on 128k miles so plenty of life left. So much better for the planet than buying a new car IMHO.

couldnt agree more, this W201 still looks good even with todays standard, especially the 2.5-16v CosWorth… thats awesome! alot of options can be ticked back then such as electric memory seats, heated seats, orthopaedic seats, cruise ctrl, ASD, headlamp wipers, leather interior and so on…
Solid engineered vehicle...owned two 2.3 sportlines in the past..what a pleasure to drive.
Sportlines are definitely worth seeking out over the standard models. Better seats, nicer steering wheel, tighter ratio steering box (biggest improvement IMO), better shocks, different roll bars, and lower ride height from different springs all make for a much better driving experience than a standard car without the expense of buying a 16v.
Sounds great, hadn't heard of the Sportline tbh, would be interesting to see how different it is to the standard car.
I'm glad to see Backseat JJ embracing the 80's with the rolled up shirt sleeves. I don't want to admit my age, but that's how we did it back in the day. I am slightly disappointed there was no A'ha playing on the radio, although that would probably breach some silly youtube copywrite rules.

I currently drive my 190e 70 miles a day for my work commute in california. She’s perfect. I get tones of compliments too! Highly recommend this car. Definitely my favorite car I’ve owned so far.

A friend had a 190E finished in metallic brown, with cloth interior, on a J plate, if I remember correctly. It was so comfortable and looked so cool. I was rather jealous, as I had a 1.8 Passat estate at the time. Great video, bringing back those memories😊😊

This was known as Baby Benz when i was growing up in Ghana in the 80s and 90s. This is when Mercedes were referred to as simply "Benz". I wish for one of these (W201), a C126 and a W124.
I just bought a 190E with the 2 liter 122 hp (metric) inline 4 as my first car yesterday. There's some maintenance to do on it but nothing too hard, especially since I'm a mechanic apprentice. My father once owned a 190D with the indestructible 5 cylinder diesel back when I was in middle-school.
So yeah, owning a 190E brings back some sweet childhood memories for me aswell. And you described well why I love this car and why I wanted to own one:
- Decent fuel economy
- VERY reliable compared to modern standards (the fact that the 190D model my dad owned could easily reach 1 million km is just mind blowing when you know that modern cars starts falling apart at 250k km)
- Pretty simple to maintain (to the point where my father told I'm really gonna enjoy working on it, no irony here)
- Spacious and comfortable interior with only what you really need
- Massive trunk
- Beautiful classic design
I feel like I'm gonna get attached a lot to my 190E, especially since i'm a classic car enthusiast.

I have been driving for 23 years and I have owned 3 cars in my life. Two of them were 190's. First W201 was a diesel (1992 190D 2.0) which I drove until it had 600.000km's. Sold it off, because my work situation had changed. Now I drive a 1987 190E 2.6, had it for 13 years now. It is an absolute tank. I pick up the children, go to the store, go to the occasional meeting, I use it as a daily. It has 166hp so it is quite fast and it is comfortable as my car is nearly full option. I am at an absolute loss when I think about what to buy next. Good video, you had a lot of the stuff right. The big steering wheel was a safety feature. When power steering fails, you can still keep the thing on the road. The big and small rear view door mirror is a feature for the ladies. Make-up ! Handling these cars does feel old skool Merc, but they do handle very well when driven hard. If I have to sum up this car.... Reliability... Engineering... 80's Style... Baby-benz.

I think the w124 is even better as it feels much more modern inside. The thing that surprises me is how small it is, I parked my C3 next to one recently and it wasn't much smaller. My dad had a 190E (the 2.0) and the way it sat so stable at 120mph tells you everything you need to know about how these were made, and the lack of speed cameras in the mid 90s
I would say the interior of the w124 is very similar... Same controls and similar layout.
I know his car well as we bump into each other at shows. I'd recommend a 190E to anyone looking to buy a classic car for all the reasons you highlighted. You can't get a better built car of that size for the money.
MB cars today are so far removed from this in terms of quality and longevity. Compare an A Class or a CLA to this for example!
They are aldo sadly powered by Renault engines
I’ve got a 1991 190E 2.0 , I bought it when I was 21, I’m now 41. It was the best £1500 I ever spent. I’ve had other mercs down through the years, but I could never let the 190E go. Pure class.
Oh that's amazing to keep a car for that long. I wish I had kept my first car, but it's tricky to keep cars for so long. So it's cool you have managed to do so :)
I recently bought from Spain a 190e 2.6 122kws - 1990. its my daily and i love it so far.
Antartic White on the outside and leather navy blue in the inside! (Very 90s)
I changed the steering wheel to a momo wooden.
And plannin to keep it classic as possible.
I've owned 2 and 190E 2.0 Auto and a 190D 2.0 manual, the pinnacle of Benz engineering
Used my 88' E34 520i as my daily driving 40km/day route through the city and on some open road to and from my uni a couple years ago, before petrolium gasses went a bit mental.
Was a reliable and great experience. Though a manual in slow crawling city traffic got a bit old. Still, love that car. Late 80s - 90s German cars can deal with traffic really well, while still being a blast from the past.
You re right all the way.Having owned virtually ever Mercedes C Class there is , this is still the best of the lot.Its the only car of them I still have after almost 24 years.

I have owned a couple of 190e’s, a 2.6 6 cylinder 5 speed manual which was a great thing, pretty fast and surprisingly economical such was the torque. I traded it in for a w124 e300d estate.
About 10 years ago I bought a 190e 2.5-16 manual, Lovely thing also which I still own, I do still enjoy the solidness of the 190, unique Merc quality of a certain era:)

Learned driving in my dad's 190E with the same interior back around 2019, feel nostalgic seeing it here, I now have late 80s BMWs now. I do prefer the E34s, but if I wanted a MB again, I'd definetly want to look at the 190E.

Absolutely love the 190E. Have had two previously and adored them. Now very much a Jag man currently driving an XF 3L diesel. Would very much like to find a nice 190E to have as a weekend car especially as so few of them left now

Mercedes Benz actually made special taxi versions of many of it's cars, I have the brochures for them. There were a few 190 models that were never imported here, a 2.3lt (not the Cosworth)8 valve and a 2.5 turbo diesel, the diesel couldn't be done in RHD turbo form and I assume Mercedes didn't want to take sales from the W124 with a 2.3lt W201 in the UK . Interestingly the W201 appears to be the only model for many years that had a normal handbrake( early G wagens did).
Oh interesting. What did they change for the taxi version?
The centre console had a taxi meter in the glove box space, what appears to be a receipt printer in an extension above the centre vents (brochure is in German), double rear view mirrors and a much larger roof courtesy light. There were additional courtesy lights in the rear and a panic alarm at the base of the steering column. Offered in all engine options plus other other things I can't work out, only one colour beige!

I bought one of the first 190s (C127CKR). Drove up and down to my London office from Kent for three years until I upgraded to a 230e. Superb car and one of my favourite cars! I sold a convertible golf to buy it. (FKE80Y).
own one, recently done most of the cosmetics like respray, fully stock internally, may not be the fasted or powerful on road, but it is so fun and feels much nicer
Great video again! I was at the petrol station many, many months ago, and while filling up my car a young girl parked a lovely C124 to the next pump. The girl was pretty too, but TBH I paid more attention to the old Merc she drove, which was in such fantastic nick that it clearly wasn't just a whim of the buyer, but actually owned and maintained by someone who definitely loved it.
One thing I'm not quite fond of with these 1980s Mercs is the way the driver is positioned in the front seat. I did a lengthy road trip in one back in early 'noughties, and for some odd reason I felt I was sitting almost attached to the driver's side door and the passenger's side was far, far away. Compared to an early 'noughties Citroën Xsara I had as a daily driver back then.

Great video. My dad’s best friend looked at a 190D in 1986 to replace his 1985 Lincoln Town Car. I went with them to the dealership. At 16 years old I remember sitting in the rear seat with my legs jammed right up against the front seat back . Not a lot of room back there. He ended up getting a 300e 2.6 a few years later. In 1992 my dad actually bought a new black 190e 2.6. All USA cars were fully equipped with airbag, ABS, power windows and air con. It was beautiful, but not a great car for his 6’2 frame. I’d love to have one today though…or a 300e

They’re amazing. I’m 24 and i bought mine last november. I have since put around 7000 km’s on it. It’s a white 1983 2.0 190E with the 4speed manual. It’s rather basic in terms of equipment but the comfort is amazing nonetheless. I use it as a daily and i trust it so much i took it for a 2200 km wintersports roadtrip to Austria and Switzerland with friends this winter. A very useable classic indeed, even with over 240.000 km’s on the clock. And due to it’s age (40+ years) it’s excluded from road tax in the Netherlands which is a great cost saver.
What i love the most is the sound it makes when you shut the boot.

Amazing, you're exactly the driver I'm talking about - someone who uses it every day with no problems. Amazing for such an old car. Also interesting to hear about the road tax exclusion at 40 - it's the same in the UK.
I had a 1987 I think, black 560 SEL with sienna brown color interior, reclining back seats with 2 different heating modes! And heated front seats, with a little leg rest on the floor in the back. Won’t even get started on the comfort and reliability. Now I got a med size 1995 e320 sedan gold with beige interior much simpler and better gas mileage which I actually like even better. It’s sad though only the cotton seat options is available in Europe, mine is leather 😁

Great video. My dad had a 190E back in the day. Probably mid-80s as it was the pre-facelift without the side cladding. He was trading in a W123 200T and originally looked at a brand new 190 but the dealer had an ex-demo 190E for the same money and that was the one he went for. Impala Brown, auto and electric everything.
And last year I picked up my first Benz. An '03 W209 coupe. Sound familiar? 😉

I like the 190, some people might think it’s a car for people older than 60 but it’s a quality car, well built(before Mercs issues with steel quality on some later cars).
Yes Diesel cars were encouraged in the 90’s for fuel economy and some people even said they were “better for the environment”, a lot of French cars were Diesels in the 90’s and early 2000’s, how thinking has changed! Especially since “Dieselgate”.
I believe the top 190 model was the “Cosworth”which are pretty expensive to buy if you can find one.
Well built cars that are still capable and can cope as a daily driver.

I was at Shedfest yesterday and there was a girl who I presume was in her 20's who had one 😄 They definitely have that image, but the more young people we see in these cars the less it will stick.
It is funny to see the rise and fall of diesel for sure. Now that it's less popular, I'm starting to warm to it more (I'm such a contrarian haha)

@@JJonCars Yeah that is strange isn’t it, my current 4 wheels is a 2004 Citroen Dispatch Diesel van, before this it had been a few years since owning a Diesel.
That is true about the age image thing that some Mercs have, but as you said the more younger people drive them hopefully that will change, it’s the same with Rovers, slowly younger drivers are buying them.
I have a 190 D 2.0 4-speed from my gradmother/grandfather that they imported from belgium (most likely it was a taxi), and her car has the ar condicioner option, i and I think it's interesting that they say it was a rare option to have

It's definitely everything you said, JJ. But. I'm nearly 60. When these were around in their day, I thought they were well built, but rather dumpy, slow, clunky, safe and dull from a design standpoint... and I still think that. I used to drive a 1985 Audi Coupe GT and I thought it was properly cool. And well built. And practical. And it had a great 2.2. 5cyl engine. . I still prefer the Audi design of the era. The 190 is.. just too safe. I'd take the Audi Coupe GT over it still now. Not that there are many around!

Mk 1 Golfs like caddy ,cabriolet And for executive class the 190E are the best daily drivers on the secondhand Market including the MX5 mk1
I'd have one at the drop of a hat, but for ulez. Popular as cabs in madeira to this day. A lot of design cues from thus car were carried over to the first of the c class again a very comfy car.

Love these cars! I just bought a W202 C200, but dunno why I didn't just get a 190, nearly bought one 3 times in the past! What got me is you said you were born in th 80s!? You honestly look like you're in your mid to late 20s. I feel like I'm similar though, I'm 30 born in 94 and people often say I'm about 20/22🤣😭

Haha I adore the 190E. I’m from Australia & they are everywhere on our roads too. However we got many more with aircon. Which if you can find it is a must have in my book. I never understood the concept of cars in the uk without aircon.
Well, we're not blessed with quite the same weather as you guys. For sure there are a few days of the year we desperately need it, but the rest of the time it's not so important :)

(not sure if you got these in the UK) Which is just glorious back when Mercedes was built like a tank. Not so much nowadays. which I’m not sure you got in the UK. Also we use the aircon as a demister down here as well in winter in the southern states such as Victoria where I am.

Had a few of thos cars over the years, started with a 190D 2.0 in 1994, when I was 19, I was stopped by the polics so often, it was polished and looked great despite being a 10 year old car at the time, so they could not understand that such a young person was driving it. Kept that one till 2007 when rust finally took it off the road.
Then I got a 190 2.0 automatic, that was horrible, the gutless carburated engine with an auto... so slow, the diesel was so much faster.
Then I got a 190E 2.6, the one with air-con and sunroof but with an auto, so was comfy but... Well the automat gearbox just made it slow and dull IMO. but that was a rare beast, most only had sunroof or air-con.
So I got a 190E 2.6, sadly without air-con but with a 5 speed manual, now that was brilliant to drive after I had its suspention fixed after a previous owner had lowered it.
I had to let my 2.6 go in 2019 when I got ill and was told I would only live a short time more. now the doctors tell me they where wrong I really really miss my 2.6...
sadly they are now classic here, and so prices have skyrocket... and I can never afford one.
But yes, that would be the perfect daily classic to me, easily able to keep up with modern traffic, economical to drive, nice to drive, reliable, and not that unsafe with abs and airbag.
I cant think of any other eighties or early nienties car I would rather daily drive.
so if anyone want to gift me a 190E or D, preferable a left hand drive one though, you would be most welcome, ohh and if in Denmark even better!
I jest of course, but is easily my favorite car, so would like a 2.6 again...
So if you have one or any 190, know that I am every so slightly envy you, and hope you enjoy and appreciate it!

But genuinely I am pleased for you that the doctors were wrong on this occasion. Although it is sad to lose you can't beat yourself up about that decision - and as I say in the video there are still so many of these cars on the road then I am sure you will be able to replace it.
Mercedes used to be more special then, a 19 year old now in an old Merc probably wouldn't be quite as surprising. Your story sounds exactly like mine, only my first car was a Nissan Bluebird, and I ended up going through about 3 or 4 of them, and I would really like another one now due to the nostalgic memories.
I hope you manage to get back behind the wheel of a 190E. Also, I visited Denmark for the first time earlier this year and what a wonderful country it is. Cheers!
You need to do another one of these with an Audi 100/200/V8 C3. Same era, very solid car too. Pretty much on par with the 190E

Unfortunately I can't answer that question for certain. I hadn't heard any horror stories or people complaining particularly about the 190E in this regard. Perhaps someone else will know
I‘ve been a huge Mercedes fan forever, but the 190 never did it for me since the day it came out.
You should have driven one first,then you would appreciate it a lot more ,because they were designed different than all other MB .

I don't think we had the carbureted version in the US. My parents came close to purchasing the 190E 2.3 16v, I think it would have been an 86 or 1987 model. But they got cold feet.
I don't know the year, but I drove someones 190E of this era. Didn't really care for how it felt.
It may be too late now, because of availability, the Mercedes I want is the 1979 300 SD. Those I have driven and enjoy.

Did you feel like Raymond Reddington? He has a Mercedes E-330 or 550. That 190 who owns her. Took very good care of her. And takes her to the mechanic. For maintenance. She will have a lot of miles left. She would be one of the ultimate cars to drive from New York to Montreal. From Montreal to Los Angeles. And Back.

I turned down the chance to buy an absolutely immaculate 2L190E automatic in the early 2000's that an independent Merc specialist who lived opposite friend's had on sale for - £900!! I'd not long bought a BMW 525TDS auto estate but I still regret not buying that Mercedes! 😭😭

I think its quite interesting it was the only bodystyle offered. BMW offered 2 & 4 door sedan, estate and cabrio with 3 series.

One of the best Mercs ever made. When you purchased one of these they were pretty basic regarding standard equipment. But what you did get was supreme build quality and engineering excellence for your money. Loved Mercs from this period but would not touch a new one today they are rubbish.
Can't say I'd trust someone if they came to me in an accident armed with that 1st aid kit- think you'd struggle to get to anyone's spleen with it though- they're scissors designed for cutting dressings!

There’s an official Mercedes photo where they cut the rear pillar and the strip that tapers up to the roof off a C124 coupe, turned it upside down like a hook, roped a 190 to the tip of it, and cranked it up so the entire 190 is dangling off it vertically. Although that was to show off the build quality of the C124, the 190 is of course from the same production standards. Back then, some original Mercedes press adverts focused entirely on how Mercedes retain their value and therefore makes it cheaper to buy one than to buy a less expensive car that’ll shed its value. The cars were built accordingly but now not many would buy most Mercedes models for their longevity. Even the fake leather almost always bursts open within a year a two whereas there are 190s and even SLs 50 years old with MB Tex that’s still in good shape.
I love adverts like that :) I am not a fan of the modern fake leather. Luckily my CLK has proper stuff

Kept our 1993 190E purchased nearly new as a cherished vehicle. 👍🏻🏴
My dad a 190E years ago, I remember the first aid kit in the back and someone broke off the badge off this car after some time 😢. Lovely car, wish he kept it now 😂
The badge is suprisingly delicate, it folds down at a touch so it doesn't spear the paupers you run down with your Mercedes-Benz 😄

Oh yeah, from what i have heard and read its supposed to be proper comfy! The vice president of Toyota North America said in an interview that "The development of reducing NVH levels in the cabin was the result of hundreds of engineers"

The Cosworth is super cool, but I bet its aged more than the standard car - no expectations of performance with a 190E, just a wafty comfortable ride, which it still provides :)
