Updates/Corrections:
- Note: I had some brief audio issues at the 35 minute mark. I was trying to say "The Road to Chaos has 2 tiles with 4 different tile options. The pathways always return to the center."
- Around the 16 minute mark, I said one of the Outer Cloister exits was "upper-right" when I meant "upper-left". The visual guides, however, are still correct there.
- In Act 2, I said that the outdoor maps cannot have entrances and exits in the same corner. I meant "MOST outdoor maps", as Rocky Waste and Lost City can have both in the same corner (just on different sides).

I was farming Mephisto today and I got frustrated navigating Durance of hate Lv. 2. So, I took to my usual online resources and I found Macro bio boi's video on how to navigate it. I thoroughly failed to make use of that video. I then had dinner and saw this video posted! I am very happy to report that I am thoroughly entertained and still unable to navigate the Durance of hate Lv. 2. Thank you WNF! =)
I thought this comment had a better ending - sorry to hear!
waypoint right along wall finish
@@Lanfx92 Super helpful! This fixed my issue, thank you. =)
You just go clockwise around the edge of the map from the waypoint. All but 1 of like 20 possible durance lvl 2 maps will make this work super fast.
😂😂😂😂
been playing this game for 20 years, watching CZcamsrs about Diablo2 for the last 5, and still finding a new awesome content creator. wow
We can only imagine how much time it took to investigate all this! Much appreciated.
strategy guides from 20 years ago showed map layouts and bestiary prefixes/affixes etc
About 20 years of playing the same game lol
20 years experience but all this was discovered in 1 year.
Great Vid!
One little thing you missed: You can spot the temple with Battlemaid Serina and the Book in it in Act 3 by looking at the temple entrance. when it is facing in the direction of Upper Kurast then you have the correct one. The other temple always faces perpendicular and is not the one you were searching for.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing that!
@@withnofiller You're welcome :) Happy gaming!
it also has a unique name (at least in the german version, dont know about the english one) when you hover above the entrance.
@@Merumyayeah it’s always called the Ruined Temple
A very well put together guide on map generation. Nicely done
Thanks, GGM! I'm a longtime fan, and I really appreciate how you break things down. Thanks for the kind words, and keep up the great work!
Great video! Update for Act 2: Specifically Rocky Waste and Lost City can have their exits on the same corner as the entrance UNLESS Far Oasis exits at the top (meaning Lost City opens at the bottom). Excited for video two about intuiting outdoor maps instead of following the meandering road, or lack thereof.
You're 100% right and I have added that correction to the video description. And "intuiting outdoor maps without using a road" sounds like a video best left in the hands of a capable speedrunner such as yourself 😊
Cheers and thanks for the comment! Keep up the awesome work!
@@withnofiller you too!
As much as speed running is completely irrelevant to me, your videos are so well made and so fun to watch that I watch them anyway
This is FUCKING beautiful. Thank you so much for making this. I learned so much more than I thought. You are an absolute legend for this
What an incredibly comprehensive map guide for D2, with just the right amount of dry humor! I am beyond impressed and my D2 game will be vastly improved. Thank you so much! Phenomenal work!!!
Knew most of that, the A3 Tile presentation blew my mind though that makes understanding it a LOT easier!
The implicit notion on how some maps can't have their exit on a specific wall, because it's opposite of the exit in the next area (i.e. black marsh cant be bottom left exit, because monastery gate is top right) was a really cool realization!
One Addition, which is for opening Uber Portals and loosely related to maps: Should you for some reason just need one or two of the Uber organs (i.e. game crashed, you were soloing it, died and could not get your body back and such), you can force the corresponding portals to spawn by putting the keys in your cube in a specific order (not ctrl clicking, I only tried top row left to right, maybe there are other configurations that work):
H,T,D Order in Cube = Meph Brain
D,H,T Order in Cube = Diablo Horn
T,D,H Order in Cube = Baal Eyes
Yo that’s insane! Thank you for sharing that!
This vid belongs in the permanent d2 archives, legendary work bro 🎉❤😊
Having played on and off for twenty years I had a feel for a lot of this intrinsically. However, the biggest mind blown moment was definitely the fact that I’ve skipped a super chest in the tower for twenty years at the T intersection pillar hallways.
Now… someone figure out arcane sanctuary for Christ’s sake.
Just take the 4th way before the three others
In addition to all the work you put into this video, I really appreciate you not interrupting the content with sub-begging or "engagement" insisting, or lewd Patreon suggesting.
You respectfully and tasfully waited until the end and acknowledged that it's the viewers call on whether or not to do any of this.
... Liked and subscribed! 👍
I've used this video many times in the past. Just found out I'm going to be teleporting for my ladder reset group in about 6 hours, so reviewing and making notes for things I don't have memorized. This is an invaluable guide if you want to Get Good.
Just wanted to comment here to help the algo. Long-form content like this is what this platform needs and the hardwork and effort that goes into such things deserves all the credit it can get.
I have been playing this game on and off for over 20 years. Early on, back in 2005 or so, I converged on spiral movement as the optimal strategy. Not with rigor or anything, as I was just a dumb kid at the time, just an observation I can make now of my play habits. So, it's incredibly fascinating to learn that my spiral strategy mirrors the 90 degree offset from the tiles entrance and exit.
The human mind really is amazing. The ability to discern seemingly abstract patterns while having absolutely no formalized understanding of the mechanisms that govern the system, truly fascinating.
This will become a classic legendary video
The amount of work that went into research and visuals here is amazing. Well done!
This is premium work. I find myself looking at this video at least once per week. This is gold!!!
Thank you!
This is by far the best video on this topic, it needs more traction.
wow. I've played off and on since I was in college 22 some years ago.. NEVER knew something like this existed until now. dang. if only I could get those years back.
Even if you don't play d2. You need to appreciate the amount of time and work put into this video. Thanks for the video.
I think it’s criminal that this video doesn’t get more attention. You are a legend. Thank you for the insightful video.
I watched all 44 minutes of this despite already knowing a majority of the tile placements, just because i like your voice and the occasional meme
dude deserves a whole playerbase of thank you for the dankness of this videos layout. great moves! keep it up
I appreciate it!
"Did a lot of trading when the farming got slooow" Is one of my favorite songs, so absolutely keep it up! :D
"You want to make a left turn at some point so you can face the same way as the exit path"
Got it, adventure's to the right!
holy shit the visuals and all. Love it! (only watched 3mins so far but well worth the thumbs up!). That type of dedication just shouldn't exist on YT given how poorly this platform treats its creators.
D2 veteran that knows most map patterns here…
From this vid, I learned:
A1: ideally, run Tristram starting north, so you have higher chance of spawning more elites, forgotten tower on edge, catacombs 2 lanes, one usually blocked
A2: lost city -> valley is never south
A3: wishbone pattern on river = camp above, stony field influences LK->KB, and for sewers, take right from chest to L2
A5: 38:17 timestamp to prepare for the rippy Anya runs, 40:20 for Halls 1 (blob, shakeweights)
Came for the awesome music and memes, stayed for the lessons :)
Good to know that I subconsciously figured almost all of this out when I was playing D2 back in the day. I could zip thru maps so fast that my friends swore that I was using hacks of some sort. Even when they were there watching in person.
Honestly the best video I've seen on CZcams in years.
That comment and pic about getting the tal rasha symbols tattooed on your arm literally made me LMFAO! 🤣
I use it (I'm on the right) on the regular, still. :P (Sorry to necro this comment)
This cool and highly informative. I'm still waiting for the poison video.
Oh I never forgot. Some day, you will get your frame by frame analysis of poison damage, Drizz T
A MUST for anyone trying to Grush or rush in general at a decent time frame.
Rad video, your comedic relief is bar none for D2R content! I will always watch every video just for that reason.
I just saw this video and farming Nikhalak and Countess is so much faster now. Thank you so much!
This is the most amazing D2 map guide I’ve ever seen in my life. Thank you so much for the hard work!
Love this guide, thank you! "I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that right.... but also... I don't care." Best line.
i so neeeded this!
a few times allready i tried understanding how speedrunners are so good at getting thru maps with minimal exploration and thus waste ALOT less time then i do. Now i wanted to get a Amazon up and going and am in the progress of pushing her thru difficutlties right now. And while not really speedrunning i try to not waste alot of time but instead get going quick as i know i can do all the lesser quests, waypoints and stuff eazy later once i get her a bit up in level and gear.
I hope this guide helps me waste alot less time on maps.
thanks man.
Amazing video man.. thank you!!! Cant imagine how much time you used to put all of that together.. amazing job.. congrats !!! thank you for ur time!!
Love your vids and really appreciate all the time you put into them. A great resource to have for the future. All the best my friend.
i play Path of exile, its people subbing builds with a builder and showcasing stats... so im so glad u do this kind of jokes
The owned jingle @1:28 killed me xD Straight up liked and subscribed xD
None of this made any sense UNTIL you held the block of swiss cheese in front of the on-screen map. Then it all made sense! Thank you!
Been playing D2 since it's original release, sort of subconsciously picked up on how maps were generated and how to navigate them easily, it's cool to really learn the actual mechanics behind it
Very useful advice for players who are either speed running or wish to get though the game quickly, I personally fall into the Kill Them All category of players, I waste more time in the zones, but i get more rewarded, after 100% of killing everything and looting it all.
This is what I've been waiting for. I'm going to write a program that will let you select where you are and then will spit out the type of map and navigational suggestions based on your video. Thank you!
28:50 - for barbarian, worth noting you don't need TP in layer 3, you can just jump through metal bars.
Thank you, sweet rabbit.
RIP Battlemaid Sarina :(
Totally epic video, dude. Bookmarked permanently for future. I've watched several of the sources you mentioned and still learned loads. Respect.
i finally understand act 3. thank you
Thanks for the video, really helpful!
I've read before about left/counterclockwise strategy but I couldn't grasp exaclty how to read entry direction, you're the first one who explained it to me... and also the first one who showed me that "entry tile" doesn't have to be small tile, like in caves. The more you know... :)
You're alive.
Laaaaaaaamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
This is the type of video I was searching for my life! Thanks
This is wildly helpful, and I love the jokes and songs throughout
I return to this guide every ladder at some point. Thank you so much for your effort in creating this!
Hi.
The designer played a 'twist-a-plot' book in his childhood and became hooked on the genre.
In one of them was a clue to navigating a future dungeon, "beware of passages not to the left."
This is a nod to the basic maze solving strategy of following one wall, in this case, the left wall as you enter.
That is all this is.
You're probably right :(
i gave the video a thumbs up before the first 30 seconds were watched... but you truely earned it with the fixed - enough meme!
The Frozen River maps to find Anya at 38:13 is one of the few I didn't know. Thanks! 🙂
Damn, aside from the actual content you are extremely funny, creative and witty. I lol’d IRL which I usually don’t.
This is so overwhelmingly good. I almost cant believe how good this is. Watched all your videos but this one truly blew my mind.
Very nice and helpful! Thanks for this video, man!
I've already forgotten everything, but with only more 50x watching, surely I'll be able to memorize it👍️
Thank you very much, I caught some of Llama's explanation in a live I briefly watched, but this I watched entirely and is exactly what I needed
Cairn stones are used as markers or burial mounds. In my country you sometimes see them if you go out into the countryside and on mountains.
Another few points on act 3. If spider is in the first camp, flayer dungeon will almost always be in the first camp (or 2nd/2nd; 3rd/3rd). Also, in the marsh, you can have a skip at a waypoint OR a random camp, but not a random camp that has a super chest. You can see all of this as examples on the maps in your video. Lastly, if you want to get crazy, Kano (best speedrunner currently) sent me a dropbox of all the tiles in difficult spots in the game, including the jungles. There are hints you can learn from these tiles like rock piles and torches that hint to dead ends and skips.
I didn't get it all down first watch, but Yes! It does feel good when you go the exact right way. Especially in the maggot lair!
Wow, the effort you put in to make this video and the way you simply described everything is awesome, def one of the best informational videos on D2 ive ever seen
You are amazing! Best D2R vids on YT. I ended up watching this several times bc there is so much good info in here.
I started doing this passively long ago. I thought I was just developing psychic powers. But turns out if you play enough, you’ll start guessing the door spawns. Cool to know there is kind of a science to it though.
Hands down the best video with the best graphics to explain the map layouts, no more shitty paint graphics!
Well done, that is a TON of research and with great visuals :) I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but in Act 5 Frigid is also connected to cold plains: If you have a top left or bottom right entrance into stony, then Frigid will go to the top left (as your example in this video) and if it's top right or bottom left entrance into stony then Frigid will go to the top right ;)
What really? That's awesome! I want to check that out. Thanks for sharing!
Never seen a more accurate Hadriel impression.
well made, super informative and I laughed hard a few times. subscribed!
It's crazy you made this thing so clean, detailed, and easy to understand. I love it!
Very well explained and put together. Good stuff man. This will help a lot of people
Easily the best D2 map reading video, masterfully done... and you included optional and uber maps.. bravo.
Well done. Always love your guides. Please do more!
i am currently in game and alt tabing to see your videos , not to be lost in act 3 ! OMG so much good work in this bijou! THANKS !
Thanks! Glad I could help!
gg video. this is an excellent resource and much less painful to watch than llama's scuffed video. it's crazy that there's still so much more to learn about maps than what's covered in this video, given how much this video covers
Your videos are so great! I will be waiting for the next!
Always good to rewatch before a ladder reset! :D
Incredible video. I was just recently wishing I had something like this. Been revisiting D1 a little too and wishing it was there but honestly the game is so slow in general that knowing really wouldn't make that big of an impact in that game lol. Btw you're a true hero for putting that note at the bottom of 6:07 to not screenshot yet cause that's exactly what I was doing as I spotted it.
super informative and super funny. Well done my guy
Thank you. Most helpful gaming vid I've ever seen.
I've read tons of guides and rewatched MrLlamaSC's explanations a few times but your video is so much better! Thank you for this amazing guide.
Thank you! I couldn't find a concise visual guide for a lot of this stuff so I made one. Glad it helped you!
Thanks for all the work you put into this near hour long detailed and simple to understand video!
Great video, love the comedy not sure about the original music though XD. Keep up the great work.
YOURE BACK!!
A huge piece of work went into this. Well done, great video.
Don't know if it matters since this is a year old but the easy way people say "left or right" for the turning in mapping is "Weapon side" or "Shield side". All characters are right handed and they hold the shield with the left hand. It's easier to know shield or weapon than left or right + clockwise or counter clockwise. It also grounds you in the game as you're playing.
Have you ever dabbled in Path of Exile? Seems right up your alley and your vid quality is honestly insane. I and probably man others would love PoE content!
Yes I have dabbled a little in it. I don't have the breadth of knowledge as I do for D2, but I love POE and would be happy to make content for it
23:56 Mike Wazowski had me wheezin' :V good one
Regarding the Halls of Vaught: Instead of checking the eyes, like when there are too many nasty mosters round,, you can check one random branch. In one there's a boss, in another there's a pack of chmpions, in one there's nothing and in one there's Nilathak. They are always in the same arrangement, so if you know what's in the checked branch, you know where Nihlathak is. I forgot the arrangement, however, it's old memories from my times on battlenet... these days I only play single player.
Extra info: A barbarian can jump through the barred corridors in the last level of the Flayer dungeon, as well as whirlwind or jump through the doors and towers in the act 5 wilderness.
baal wasn't being civil. he was keeping fresh meat. also, an incredibly well made video.
Absolutely incredible content. Top notch, best I've seen. Welcome
Nice vid!
Big wow. The Stony Field / Kurast Bazaar entrances connection was a mind-blower. When was that discovered?! Big props to whoever first had that click in their head.
Funny, though. My personal definition of clockwise / counterclockwise to categorize areas is the opposite of yours. I think of it like this: starting from an entrance, draw a circle of arrows that encompasses the full map to demonstrate the proper flow of travel in an area. By my definition for the majority of dungeon maps, you hug your character's left wall and end up traversing the area's circumference in a clockwise fashion. With the oddballs (Maggot Lair 1 & 2, WSK2, etc) you follow the character's right wall and move around the maps' outside edges counterclockwise.
Example of my logic @15:10 -- a typical Tower Cellar 2 that you've labelled as counterclockwise. The entrance is at about the 5 o'clock position. To efficiently find the next floor on this map, you move left from 5 o'clock, pass 6 o'clock, and the exit happened to be at 7 o'clock. ...That's clockwise, right? Yet you call this and all areas like it counterclockwise. If one moved counterclockwise, you would have gone right and circled over to 3 o'clock, gone up and passed high noon, and the exit would be coming into sight as you traveled south past 9 o'clock. Counterclockwise for this map means you'd traverse three-quarters of the area before you were done.
Looking at your tables at @6:00 gives me a kind of mental vertigo because it reads counter intuitive to my understanding of how one moves around each map. Regardless of what's written here, I'm willing to agree to disagree on our terms and definitions and give this vid a like because it's still very good and well done. No rage-filled requests from me to rerecord the voice over in full to suit my understanding of map traversal.
And a legitimate thank you for making me feel dumb. 20+ years of playing this game, and there's only four iterations of the Frozen River? After all this time, it's the only area where I was always relying on "a feeling" to go in certain directions to navigate it well. But nope! I'd just been running the same maps over and over without ever realizing it. Proves it's me who's the silly ninny in the end.
Thank you! I am not sure who figured out the Stony Field / Kurast connection first, but I heard Llama talk about it and then I ran some tests on it- found it to be surprisingly accurate. I understand what you're saying on the clockwise vs. counter clockwise distinction. When I use those terms, I am talking about the way you turn, rather than the exit's location relative to the whole map. But honestly either way is a good way of looking at it. Thanks for the comment!
"I am calling these 'investing in crypto- I mean, I am calling these random maps.'" You cheeky- You just earned yourself a subscriber.
holy shit this is absolutely amazing, very well done
Stayed a while and listened.
Glad I did
