Godzilla Minus One REALLY Is One Of The Best Films Of The Year - (Movie Review)

  • Godzilla Minus One is a kaiju movie from Toho directed by Takashi Yamazaki. It is not only one of the best movies of 2023 but probably the greatest Godzilla movie going back to it’s WWII roots with a horror feel but also being extremely moral in it’s human message and story. One of the most Christian ideas in a film coming from Japan instead of America ironically. This is going to go down as the movie that made the United States respect these stories greatly I think and it needs to be seen.

      It goes to show that although important, money is quite meaningless unless it has a true place. As soon as the movie ended I told my brother, "This is an instant Classic". The Hollywood versions are good, but they lack certain elements, and likely due to the point of it being about profit. Minus One will be watched for many years, so it's a success. I like Legendary, but after seeing this I realized that in those versions the only character I cared about they killed off 35 minutes into 2014 in Brian Cranston because he had real issues, but when he was out we were left with the son.

    In Minus One, Godzilla was enraged, vicious and terrifying. And all of the humans were well developed and totally relatable, even though it's a period piece. This is what happens when talented people who are passionate about the subject matter are given creative freedom. All hail Yamizaki and team, they did the impossible. This is a movie that deserves to be seen on IMAX or at least a giant screen with a great sound system.

    • @BleedingUranium
      @BleedingUranium Před 6 měsíci +6

      Absolutely yes. The core themes are ultimately about hope and humanity, and unsurprisingly people tend to love and connect with those feelings. I feel "we're all the same" is a much more powerful and satisfying message than "we're all different", and the fact that everyone universally connects with and feels for the characters regardless of it being a subtitled foreign-language speaks volumes about how little even something like a different language matters when looking at our own collective humanity.
      No one in the film "looks like me" and no one in the film speaks my language... and it just doesn't matter. Because all the important core things that connect all of us as fellow people aren't really trivial differences like these. Among all the many, many different ways this film is amazing, the fact that a foreign-language film is being so universally praised for its relatable and likeable characters is very much something to take note of.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 Před 6 měsíci +16

      @@Rugietthe monsterverse isn't bad. They're just not serious and their writing is put on the sidelines for the sake of monster battles.
      The writing in 2014 is actually really good. Not this level of good, but It's good. Unfortunately that movie had a severe lack of godzilla.
      It's like the rolan emerick 98 godzilla in the sense that it's a terrible godzilla movie but a great monster movie.
      The monsterverse now is sort of a mix of the showa era goofiness but made more serious with some hesei era monster vs monster style matchups.
      I'd say in terms of how godzilla is written the monsterverse is mostly mimicking hesei since hesei godzilla is neither a hero nor a villain. He's a chaotic neutral version of godzilla. He can go either way.
      Minus one godzilla is a more evil version of the original 1954 godzilla. That godzilla wasn't evil, but more like vengeful terror.
      This godzilla actively pursues killing as many people as possible. He goes out of his way to harm everyone he can.
      He's like a mix of the 1954, gmk and millennium era godzillas.

    There was soo many good messages and themes in this movie.
    One of the ones that probably hit the hardest is when one of the characters said something along the lines of
    sometimes war just shows up at your doorstep.
    Giving a message that some of the people, regular people who are just living, never wished for war, but get dragged into it just because. Too many themes of the ruling class not caring about harm they're causing to the people. Treating their lives as expendable... And that they weren't coming to save you... To look towards your friends, family and community, something we've really lost in today's world as we have NO community anymore.

    Completely agree with you on everything in your review. I was absolutely blown away and as a big movie buff and someone who has seen EVERY Godzilla movie it is the best movie I've seen in years and definitely the best of all time. I've seen it 3 times now, twice in 4DX which I'd highly recommend. It really made you feel the power and terror of being that close to something so powerful and destructive and the shockwave that hit during the Ginza scene was just shocking. There are so many themes that hit so hard in this movie and even the side characters and extras are all giving incredible performances, in particular Captain Akitsu and Mizushima's interaction before the final conflict really hit me as a service member who felt they'd never done anything worthwhile compared to some of my mentors. Cannot sing the praises enough.

    • @BleedingUranium
      @BleedingUranium Před 6 měsíci +7

      The exchange about not having seen war being something to be proud of hit me hard too. There was so much of this sort of tone/theme in the film, but one of my other favourites that's probably overlooked is when Yukikaze's captain gives his speech, and asks (not orders) everyone if they'll join him. In 99% of movies this would either result in every single person present deciding to stay like a hivemind, or everyone except the the main characters (at least temporarily) giving up and leaving.
      Instead, we get a much more human third option, where a few of the guys decide they just... can't go through with this, because they have families, because they're tired of fighting/death, or because they simply can't/won't hope that they'll succeed. So they leave, like 10-20% of them or so. And, importantly, everyone else fully respects their decision. None of them are named or important characters, but it adds so much humanity to everyone present. On the flip side, the guys from the balloon company choose to risk themselves to give the plan the best chance they can.
      It fits with the theme of choosing for oneself, just as we see more directly with Shikishima having been a kamikaze pilot, ordered, rather than asked, to give his life.

When the camera turns to Godzilla before he roars at the cloud it’s eerie to see Godzilla looking up at the cloud, almost like a child being admired by their parent. Which for me, Minus One captured the true imagery of Godzilla and it is echoed through Tomoyuki Tanaka’s famous quote; “Godzilla is the Son of the Atomic Bomb.”

The story, the pacing, the cg, sound design, monster design, all perfect. A lot of the Godzilla vs __ movies end up feeling like you’re always just kinda zoned out during the human scenes waiting for the next Godzilla scene but not this movie man. I was engaged and attached to every character and felt true fear for every single one of them when Godzilla was attacking. The only thing I was hoping to see a bit more of was the US nuclear testing, it would’ve been cool to see a bit more of the the impact that had on Godzilla, and maybe could’ve called back to it during the plunging and resurfacing. Besides that my only gripe was it got a bit too loud during some scenes but I think that came down to imax being cranked a bit. Absolutely can’t wait to see it over and over

    I already watched it two times in the theatre,I was shocked by this movie,it's SO powerful and heavy,it left me breathless. Godzilla's presence is SO overwhelming on the big screen,the sound effects and the soundtrack are top-notch!
    I loved Godzilla,I didn't find him scary,I was just in awe when he was on screen,I'm so in love with this design,might be my second favorite,but the human characters,man,they're the highlight of the movie,so well-written and characterized,I loved them,deeply cared and felt for them,and they went hard on my emotions!
    What a movie! Although,unlike your case,my favorite still remains the 1954 original.

    This has to be one of, if not my personal Favorite Movie. I've grown up watching these movies, GMK, Hesei, the Original, and Final Wars were all Movies I've grown up with. Though Shin Godzilla was good too, this one takes the cake by a long shot. I've never been so drawn to, so amazed, and so emotionally captured by most movies, but this one just...wow. Even my father, not even a Godzilla fan, let out this yelp of excitement and thrill as soon as we stepped out of the theatre. Maybe I'm just super biased, but this struck at my nostalgia of Godzilla and was truly an amazing movie that I'd recommend to anyone. I hope the producers get all the credit they deserve because this movie was so incredible and I can't wait to see more of what Toho can offer in the near future. If you haven't seen it go see it now whilst it's still in theatres I cannot recommend it enough.

    Tbh idk if for me this movie surpasses the original but I 100% see why. It’s a fantastic reboot of post ww2 Japan dealing with Godzilla and the messages, story and characters are perfect. I feel the original has the edge just due to when it was made and how that really was a recent memory for them and seeing that conveyed into that story is amazing. Also I’m a fan of people not being too happy when Godzilla is defeated but that’s just me. Overall, it’s like a 9 vs a 10 both are amazing.

    After giving it some thought I can fully agree that this is the best Godzilla film in the franchise just barely topping the 54 film
    Bit of spoilers talk:
    One thing I did notice is that the radioactive aspect of Godzilla wasn't prominent in the film. It's eluded to in a few news reports and the black rain, but it's not a major plot point like in past films. Perhapse they will explore that element in a later sequel. After all even with the war over the radiation from the bombs was still there. The invisible fear
    This movie doesn't have to have a sequel but if they do come and are this quality or even greater then I am all for it

If I had one complaint it would be that Godzilla could have used a little more screen time during his attack on the Ginza district. It all went by so fast. In fact the entire 2 hour & 5 minutes went by really fast. I was so engrossed in everything going on. The characters, the music, the cinematography, the story, everything was just awesome. I'll definitely be seeing it a few more times before it leaves theaters. Nice enthusiastic review. XD

  • @WarMasterGeneral
    @WarMasterGeneral Před 6 měsíci +4

    The politics of Shin and reading that Napoleon was considered "anti-French" made me pay attention to this film's portrayal of the powers that be, especially considering the time period it depicted.
    - SPOILER COMMENT -
    Obviously this will seem easy for an American to say, but I genuinely feel grateful the film had a negative but still honest portrayal of the Kamikaze pilot.
    Characters initially thought the protag was a coward because he didn't commit suicide for his country, especially since Japan lost the war.
    What was beautiful was how he was ripped apart inside feeling like he should or shouldn't have lived; how he and the others stuck to their unity and humanity by recognizing that sending young men on intentional suicide missions simply isn't the way to defend the lives back home.
    The scene where the mechanic shows the protag the "thing" in the plane made me think there wasn't an ejector seat. That he was specifically telling him there wasn't one.
    When the protag flew the plane into Godzilla's mouth, I was speechless with joy when they flashed back to that scene, revealing the mechanic was showing that there WAS an ejector seat and was insisting that the protag lived.
    This vengeful mechanic, who was the primary source of the protag's guilt, was the one to ultimately say the protag shouldn't throw his life away from shame.
    This film is an incredible WAR film and Godzilla's presence tells it the same way human ancient mythology had done. See this movie folks, SEE this movie, SEE THIS MOVIE.
    Literally everybody will love this film.
    And yes, I'm also extremely happy for New Empire because it's not trying to COMPETE. It's an action figure movie and it's the kind of stuff wars are fought for. Minus One reminds us what we sacrificed so we can have wonderful times of songs and color.
    Klayton was crying and so was I.

    It is a miracle Godzilla film. They finally made the human characters as exciting and engaging as Godzilla. Probably my favorite Godzilla film out of them all.
    The thing that makes it great is just establishing that connection with Godzilla so early. The monster means something specific to our boy, and is way beyond the generic terror of a giant monster. It's everything he's struggling with in life. There is no way that enough people will go see this movie.

    It's the human element that makes this movie so great. It's also what the Legendary movies are missing so badly. And I've only had the chance to see it once so far. I will be back, but it'll be a couple of weeks before I can free up that time sadly. Anyway, some thoughts about the screening I attended:
    Subs > dubs
    The only minor complaint I had was that in some shots the navy ships look CGI. Generationally better than most movies with twice the budget, but something about them looked off to me, and I can't figure out more beyond that.
    The only major complaint I have is that all the IMAX theaters in my area were running some Beyonce movie.
    I finally have a reason to buy a home 4K player, and maybe upgrade the TV alongside that.

I don't go to the theater as much as I did pre-Covid but my butt was in a theater for this on Sunday and it was awesome.
    I had the same thought leaving the theater: Godzilla was legitimately scary in this movie. Part of this is because this is one of the best looking Godzilla incarnations we've ever seen. I think I like Legendary's design a bit better overall but Minus One is a very close second followed by Earth.

      What I love about the plan is it's this perfect level of "sciencey" that's rather rare in movies. It's neither incredibly basic and dumbed down for a "casual audience", nor is it so overly complex that it sounds like technobabble (effectively also a form of being dumbed down, because you're basically being told not to think about it).
      Use freon gas to lower the water's buoyancy, and then also balloons for a rapid ascent causing decompression. Add in the visual demonstration of the former, and the deformed dead deep sea fish floating to the surface for the latter, and it's made clear to the audience what's actually being done. The film trusts the audience to be smart enough to follow this, instead of dumbing it down or holding their hand, and I feel people appreciate that, even if they don't consciously realize it.

    Minus One was made on a MINISCULE budget compared to Hollywood films and it never once looks cheap. The Godzilla action is better than the legendary films and in broad daylight most of the time rather than hiding the CGI with rain and darkness and looks FANTASTIC, the scene with him chasing their little mine sweeper boat is a goddamn showstopper of a scene, the use and reimagining of the atomic breath is breathtaking and the film succeeds where the legendary films fail by making you genuinely care for the human leads, you want to see them overcome the horrors of the war and the scars they have that have prevented them from truly becoming a family and finally letting go of the past. Even their final plan to kill Goji is brilliant in its simplicity and has fallbacks if it doesnt work right away. A masterpiece of a film and one that sits right next to the original Gojira and Shin Gojira in terms of quality, story, and heart.
