Hey!
A lot of you guys commented that you picked up Sea of Thieves after watching my videos and were asking for some Beginner Tips. Well, here you go!
My best shot at a Sea of Thieves Beginner's Guide; I hope it helps!
@cliff the story guy u are the worlds best sot CZcamsr
legend!
Skeleton orders can be good if you get them on a small island they will always be x marks the spot if you get them on a large island they will be riddles riddles not so great one treasure chest with random assorted loot that can be pretty terrible at times.
And the thing with the lanterns it's not that turning them off makes you harder to see it's more like turning them on makes you a lot easier to see and people who normally wouldn't have noticed you will notice you a lot sooner now
@Tsunzucchini TzatzikiSan they may not have known but also some people just don't care if you show up and you don't fight cool if you show up and you kill them they'll just jump to a new server and start over sometimes it's not worth defending cuz you're not doing anything that important
I don’t have sea of thieves but these videos make me want to get it but I have a question should I get sea of thieves even if I don’t have other friends who have it
Anyone watching this in 2024 waiting for release on ps5?
hell yeah
It is on ps5 releases April 30
I hope it will have cross play so you guys can gather loot for me 😂😂
@Spadomur it will have crossplay but i think ps5 players might start with safer seas so womp womp
Ofc im learning so i will not go blindly into the game but i hope they have ps5 servers so we can have our noob servers before getting slaughtered by pc players
My tips I used to give when teaching new players:
1. Learn how to hold block, then simultaneously hold sword charge, then release both and jump to do the sword dash jump, this is the best way to jump off an island and get to your boat in seconds.
2. Whenever you stop at an island have your anchor lifted and sails lifted so if you spot someone coming your way fast u can sword jump on and drop sails and start getting away, solo players have a tough time solo raising anchor.
3. If you are seeing other ships, visiting ones other players were just at., or heading in the path of one, repeatedly check the front of your ship for someone in the water, or one on an island nearby waiting for you to stop.
4. If you think someone might've snuck on board, run around and basically slash every brown barrel or dark area of the ship in case they are "tucked" there, which means they are basically emoted in the spot.
5. If you are running from other players go into the wind, it has been proven that facing the wind is fastest on the smallest ship, but at the end of the day until you have more experience, as a solo player you won't outrun a galleon of experienced players.
6. I know he says in the video lights aren't too big of a deal because a good player will still spot you... this is kind of true, in the past there have been issues with render distance where players hide on other sides of islands their lights still show for enemies because the island hasn't rendered in yet, only lights you ever want on are belowdecks ones.
7. Keep loot down below, never store treasure on your deck, it will shine to other players, also if u have skulls, on the bottom floor of your sloop, there is a barrel in the center, but them on that barrel, if you put them on the bottom floor the green will glow outside the boat making it obvious you have valuables hidden inside.
Bonus Tips: If you are feeling good about your skill, keep kegs in the crow's nest (they can be found at any Fort, just look out for a skull in the sky), that way if an enemy galleon or brig comes after you, you can drop the kegs off of the back of your boat in the hope they run them over, this can be dangerous because if a player hits the deck of your boat with a fire bomb then it will set off kegs in the crow's nest.
Try to find friends whether it's the craziness of open queue or via a discord, having other players with you will teach you a lot of the ins and outs of the game.
Google videos for "Best Tuck Spots on sloops" , which will help you identify if someone has snuck on your boat.
If you are a solo console player id recommend going to settings and turning off crossplay, whilst console newbies are the most fun to mess with for PC players it is significantly more difficulty to sword-fight PC players because we can basically keep jumping over your head faster than your remote can turn.
If you are in fog and can't find other players or something else point the cannon straight up and shoot yourself out of it , it puts you above the fog and you can see everything, just get to a mermaid asap once you hit the water again.
You can harpoon the Megalodon when its at the front of your ship for its first passby to snag a ride, it will go way faster than wind will and it usually goes straight for at least a little bit.
If you are unlucky enough to be faced with a galleon or brig that is trying to broadside you, you can try to do what he does in the video and hit whoever on their cannons and knock out sails, another good one is hitting them with fireballs, the bigger the ship, the more annoying fire is to put out due to the layers, so they have to decide on neglecting it and letting it spread or getting off the cannons.
LASTLY, If your enemy is dressed in all black, or has any sort of ghostly glowing green on them.... run, get the hell out of wherever you are, because you have a 70/30 chance they are either experienced pirates ready to take everything you have or they are actually really nice and helpful and will try to show you parts of the game. and them being nice is rare usually.
Thankyou. The video and this is very helpful.👍
Amen.
Mans wrote a whole novel in the comment section 😭
I'm late to the show, but really appreciate this comment.
I was a bit worried about the community after reading some reviews. I bought the game two days ago, and have only had good experiences with other people. Someone helped me with the Kraken, I was boarded by someone and the left me a chest, and I had people come to my aid when I ran into an explosive barrel. This game has been nothing but fun, and you made it better.
U play on xbox? If so you are VERY LUCKY cause my luck is trash while playing on xbox servers.
I am not one of those people unless I feel like being kind I am a warmonger on sea

@@someinternetguy420 No. What lavender beard are you talking about?
Even though I’m a veteran Sea of Thieves player, I did enjoy watching this video because it is helpful AND tells a story, which is something not many other content creators can do. I’ll definitely tell someone to watch it if they need tips. Also, congrats on the 100k Cliff!
You recommend this game but for a solo ?
@@bloodyoathrs3621 I played it mostly solo and it is fun but 10x more fun with a crew.
Well he isn't called "the story guy" for nothing
@@bloodyoathrs3621 i think if you are a new player you should try to play with friends but if not, playing solo on a sloop is very possible. If you need someone to play with you could add me but if you play sloop on open crew you will likely find friendly players willing to help
@@saucysealion1930 when i do open crew they dont talk or just leave lol
I’ll definitely keep this video in mind to send to my friends who get into the game. I keep getting more of my friends into this wonderful game.
Same
I have been trying tirelessly but my friends won’t give it a chance
that moment when you finally convince your friends to try it after months and they quit after 20 minutes because they find it boring
Everyone I talk to always says they’ll give it a try but they really decided beforehand that they aren’t going to like it so they don’t.
Wait you guys have friends?
For enemy types there are several other ones with their own quirks
Normal skeletons: Attack them in any way you want they dont have any quirks
Broken Skeletons: same as normal but way weaker they will die in like 3 sword hits
Shadow skeletons: Can be killed in daylight but shine a lantern on them when its night *when invincible you will notice they are kinda seethrough and you can go through them*
Gold skeletons: throw a bucket of water on them or lead them to water and then shoot them, they are way slower than other types so you can easily throw a firebomb at them
Plant skellies: slash them with your sword guns dont work as well on them, they also regenerate health in water/rain
FOTD Skeletons: You wont have to worry about those unless you are on a specific island and a specific player activated even is taking place they are same as shadow skellies but you have to shine specific light color on them depending on their own color
SPECIAL SKELLY: The ancient skeleton: this one very rarrely spawns on any island and gives you ancient coin, a currency you can only get from buying it with real money or getting them from the plunder pass you are at you will notice this sound of something going out of the ground and a noise similar to coins being shaken, locate this skeleton quickly (he is gold and blue and has a bag on his back) and attack it, the skellly will try to run away if it runs away for some amount of time it will go into the ground and disappear so quickly kill it,
there are some other skeletons that are just reskins of the standard white skeletons like white skeletons with some glowing bits
There are boss skeletons like the captains having just higher health having a name and captain clothes
and there are the skeleton lord/ashen lords which are actual bosses with multiple special attacks, really high health and more
Fun fact/tip for gold skellies in particular, on some islands you might be forced to fight them away from any water source. In this case pack some bait to munch on to induce vomiting. Hold out your bucket to gather it and voila, rusty skeletons.
@@dovahkat9635 I don't even bother with getting them rusted unless I have an ammo source nearby; easier to just firebomb them to death!
There are also phantoms, sirens, siren leaders, and three types of ocean crawlers
Hey, i've found some ghosts fighting a skeleton captain and attacking me at the same time. What was that?
I dunno how but I've been playing with a friend who is returning to SoT and we've encountered Ancient Skellys like 5 times over the course of 7 sessions or so. Wtf is his luck?
Good newbie tip is save your empty chests if you plan on playing for a long time. You can put all your loot in the chests and keep them on the front tip of your ship when you dock land near the vendors and then just drop the chests first then start selling the items. You can put the same 3 types of items in a chest and carry to specific vendors and sell all 3 at once. Saves alot of time imo.
Finished a session where me and my crew decided to use everything you said here instead of going on our regular route of doing world events or talk tales constantly it felt nice to feel new again I showed this to my younger brother and he was able to tag along and understand what he was doing. Love the content btw 👍
Thanks for making such great videos Cliff! You motivate me to get on the seas every week and do some plundering!
Dude u are by far one of the best sot content creators. Appreciate what u do, even for us veterans who have 900 hours in game it's nice to see someone enjoying the game while trying to help others.
I've been solo slooping for my entire time on the seas, and recently another friend got the game, so this'll be super helpful for him. Thanks Cliff!

What's a friend?
Yes this is exactly what I needed I’ve always wondered what I should do I’m new to the game and you are still my favorite CZcamsr :)
My friends that I got sea of thieves to play with started me and my wife off a lot like this but they are definitely scared of taking us on world events and don’t seem to enjoy PVP much. But being able to break up and get tier 5 gold hoarder on my second session really put me ahead of the game gold wise allowing me to buy cosmetics for my ship as well as having friends do tall tales with just makes the experience so much greater. You have a lot of details that an impromptu guide from experience players on the ocean will just miss by design so I really love this video it has a lot of tips and tricks they get missed when you’re in the thick of it And trying to explain to newer players.
I've tried to get into this game so many times already, but now that I actually have some basic knowledge, and watching your story in this video, I'm a hell lot more hyped!
Great tutorial, I would definitely recommend this to a new player. Also happy 100k cliff you earned it.
This is a great tutorial and I'm honestly so thank you for this channel and these videos. I first came to the sea of thieves not too long ago because of this channel and I can see so many new players coming in rapidly. Well done for another great video and HAPPY 100K!
Absolutley adore your work Cliff, Been playing SoT since 2018 and i love it that you went from starting your adventure t guiding others. I love how you've grown and hope you get more subs, you deserve it :)
Been playing since Alpha, just found your channel and I love what you are doing. Even though I know basically everything about this game, still wanted to see your take on a tutorial for it. Best I've seen thus far. Keep it up, dude!
I love this, super simple to follow, and again, love the storytelling type that you keep producing, keep up the awesome job!
Agreed!
Wow, this video was very good and somehow more interesting! Great job dude! Keep it up and your legacy shall be remembered👍
Nice work Cliff. Only been watching about a week or so but I binged all your content and I've been excitedly waiting for the next episode. Thanks for making such entertaining and informative content.
Hey Cliff thank you for posting I love your videos so much! I would like to say after a week of playing the game ... getting to know the "community" I personally think that Devils Roar is pretty fun to just go solo slooping in, I only found 1 other player in a 4 hour session and they seemed so distraught seeing me they just took off too. I think the harshness of devils roar can actually help train a player faster to learn how to avoid volcanoes, where to park the ship, how to run and repair. Most of all those things, explore and have fun, its a pretty big game to explore all of it. Thank you.
Congrats on 100k Cliff! You deserve it, your content is soooo underrated and it’s a good day when you upload😁
Agreed congrats! :D
very informative and helpful, I sure wish I had this when I was a newbie back in 2020
You have already become one of my favorite youtubers, keep up the amazing work! Always looking forward to the next video :)
This channel is really cool. The community here is so nice, I'm excited to tell that I'm already halfway through the path of a Pirate Legend.
I’ve spent about 200ish hours on SoT and basically know all there is to know but just watched your video for fun and learned you can hit a harpoon with your sword to drop a piece of loot that you harpooned, keep up the great content!
Or why not stay on the harpoon and right click it...Would you get off harpoon, hit it with sword then get back on harpoon?....

Cliff I got into Sea of Thieves because of your videos. Loving this game!
Thanks Cliff! I managed to get Merchants Emisary 5 today, on my third day of play!
You're the best, hope to meet you some day on the seas. Peace!
It's been a few days that I played this game on the gamepass. At first, I went solo, not worrying that players could scuttle me and steal what little loot I found. I was afraid it would happen to me again, and unfortunately... I understood that I couldn't prevent that, because it is part of the heart of the experience of this video game. But after joining a very experienced player and successfully bringing back the huge loot we amassed, I finally understood the appeal of this game.
Still, I have a lot to learn. But your video enlightened me on the questions I didn't dare ask during my few sessions with other players. And I thank you very much!
Wish I had this tutorial when I started, though I had a friend who helped a lot.
Also congrats on getting legendary kraken hunter.
Kinda felt nostalgic to me to see that when you explained the ashen winds event, it was on the same island I did one on my first day. Me and my friend took over 2 hours to complete it and sunk twice due to meteors and a skeleton sloop. We were very proud of ourselves afterwards though and vowed never to go to the 'red swirly thingy' ever again 😂
Very similar to my own story of how we did Ashen Winds for the first time lmao
Am a seasoned player, but I invited a friend to play the game. I decided to watch this video just to see what I might need to teach them or how to explain things. Watching this made me look back and realize I need to just link this video to them. This video is phenomenal and is well at explaining, plus the story makes it really fun! Good job on this video! You earned a sub from me.
Great video! I really in joyed it and I am new to Sea of thieves and you kinda got me into it and this video really helps and I don’t have constructive criticism because you’re content is already really good keep making videos like this!
Congrats on 100k we'll all be here when you soon hit 1M!!
Cliff is an amazing youtuber! His videos are so entertaining! CZcams wouldn't be the same without him.

Thank you so much for this video. Ive had Sea of Thieves for a while now but i watched anyway and actually learnt a lot. Subscribed!
I love the empathy. Most experienced players have forgotten what it's like being new, and it makes it hard for them to give good advice. I agree that some of the things the game has to offer are difficult for new players to handle, but I encourage everyone to try those things when they are ready--use gunpowder barrels, do the other world events, drop the anchor mid-combat, go to the Devil's Roar--just not yet.
It's always a good day when cliff posts
I went in this game blind with my buddy. We explored for hours and I was drunk on the unknowns and uncertainty of it all.
Excellent videos as always. Absolutely love this content style, reminds me of a less dry version of ambiguous amphibian which is high praise to both of you
Hey just got this game this week and found your content when searching for guides. This is an amazing guide with useful info, and a fun story on the side. I'd love to see more like this with some other new player guides
Enjoy
Always a good day when he posts!!
On my first day in this awesome world of Pirates, Thieves, Wild waters and majestic beasts, I set sail with my friends on brygantine and started looking for treasures and money as every pirate, however we also met skeletons who tried to get into our way with their captain from hell. It wasn't easy at start but as they say teamwork makes the dreamwork. We managed to get as much loot as we could so we started sailing to nearest outpost. While we were looking at the amazing view of sunset, we saw that water started getting darker, the music appeared. It was legendary kraken that appeared out of nowhere, we didn't know what to do but we managed to use our gunpowder barrels to destroy this monstrocity. After we did it our barrel with planks was empty, we had to throw out the water all time, untill we arrived to Galeon's grave outpost... We managed to sell all the loot but then we realised that this outpost is called galeon's grave for some reason. Our ship was blocked between 2 rocks, we tought it was over for us... But then! We used our last gunpower barrel to push the ship back on the sea. With the money we had we bought planks and fixed ship. Sometime later my friends had to go, I ended up sailing alone in the middle of nowhere, then I took the flame grenades and set the ship on fire and went away to see the view. That was last thing that I saw at my first day in Sea of Thieves.....
Sounds a lot better than my first impressions
Thanks, bud.
Just picked this up, and failing to get ANY of my massive family to join me in some adventure.
This was KINDA my solo plan, but this info helped a lot. And I was about to do easy missions rather than just go out... but maybe a mix if I still have free ones.
Thank you for this I’ve never played sea of thieves but now when I get it I’ll be ready!
You know what, I actually kind of like this guidance-giving, knowledge-sharing iteration of Cliff.
