  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Right - so as much as anything else, making these videos I end up learning a bunch about the models of the Helix - so hopefully this will help one or two people, please feel free to like the video and leave a comment if it does?
The Friedman BE 100 is one of those holy grail amps for those seeking the hot rodded Marshall thing - a real perfect amp for Rock and Metal - and with enough controls in the drive channel to make it a very versatile machine whether you're playing single coils or humbuckers. I take a look at the manual and check out the suggesting settings - which include BASS AT 10!!!
    This preset is "BE"

Using the manuals from the original amps is a fantastic idea! Thanks!

A walkthrough of the Amp manual was really helpful. I hope you keep up this way of presenting how to dial in the various Helix amps. 👍 A link to where we can download a PDF of the manual would be a nice addition.
I enjoyed the Tour de Force improvisation at the start of the video which combined many different techniques in a seamless and musical way. Thanks

Your a really classy player sir!. The friedman is my favourite marshall type amp in the helix. I've only had it for a week but the friedman and jtm45 are my favourites

Great video again John. Wish I had seen this one before. My prefered gain amp on the Helix has been the Revv Gen Red pretty much since I got the Helix floor a little over a year ago. I had tried the Placater but something bothered me about it at first (and I trusted the default settings too much...)
I tried it again recently and it has become my favorite gain amp. I've always been more drawn to Marshall type tones anyway and the Rev Gen Red as great as it is did not give me that. The Placater does it in spades and I loved it in all demos of the real amp I'd seen. So I didn't understand why I didn't gel with it (as well as several other Marshall models in the Helix).
After experimenting more, I realized that my issue with it was very simple. For some reason, the Placater loads by default with both the C45 and Fat switches turned on. They really shouldn't be on by default. For chording, the fat switch makes the amp boomy and muddy to me. But it's the C45 switch that really killed it for me. It not only adds brightness but it adds a kind of really annoying "broken glass" thing to the attack of the notes that I really hate. I turned that off as well and there was the mid barky Marshall tone I was after. I now NEVER turn the C45 switch on. The HBE switch is much sweeter without that C45 thing on. The saturation switch adds gain and smooths out the texture of the distortion a bit. For leads with HBE and Saturation on and gain around 7, then the Fat switch makes sense and the leads are liquid and smooth and sound fantastic with all 3 of my main guitars (my #1 which is a Strat, my Tele and my PRS Custom SE 24-08.
With the Tele on the bridge pickup, drive at 4.0, all switches off, I get a great crunch tone. Instant rock'n'roll tone that sounds instantly familiar. With a snapshot, up the gain to 5.0, turn on the HBE switch and it's instant 70s classic rock with all the Marshall mids bark you might want. Next step on another snapshot, up the gain to 6-7, leave HBE on and turn on Saturation, late 70s hard rock or 80s JCM-800 tones that sound way better to me than the 2203 or 2204 models on the Helix. Lastly, for leads, up the gain even more if you want, leave HBE and Sat on and turn on the Fat switch. Amazing lead tone. I also didn't mention the lowest gain snapshot I came up with. All siitches off, gain at 1.0, with the Tele, I get edge of breakup. With the Strat it'.s almost all clean. With The PRS it starts at waht I'd call crunch and more up from there.
As for cab, I pair it with a dual instance with the 4x12 Greenback 25 with a 67 Cond mic and the other side is a 4x12 Brit V30 with a 414 Cond and I turn the level of that one down 2-3 dBs. with that cab settup, the mids are rich and satisfying. I low Cut at 100 and High Cut are 10K which eliminates the fizz for me. I know you like high cutting lower usually but on aMarshall type amp it would just kill the energy IMO.
This amp is incredibly versatile. It's a rock Swiss army knife and I just regret not having dived into it sooner. Thanks for showing it again as the gem that it is.

I got the hx stomp in Jan and at first I was underwhelmed. Then the new updates came and I decided to just dive into it and sculpt to my taste. Since then it's been a blessing. I love this thing. I have owned at least 20 amps and my current baritone rig is an orange ad200b/ad140htc with a large es8 pedal board. I can easily recreate most of my rig through my mesa 290 and stomp enough to be fully satisfied with audio, playability, and tracking. Your channel has been a big help to get more out of it. Appreciate it!

The Friedman BE 100’s are my favourite on the Kemper too. They also sound super with humbuckers. Must say, the three pedals Friedman brought out seem great too, although I’d most likely have to import them.

Just tried your set up, with the only difference putting the Retro Reel block in between the amp and the cab. Wow Flutr & Saturation at .07 IMHO it made a huge difference in clarity, and reduced the harshness with more character and usable tone.

Can you do a video Johnnathan on how you go from your tones on the line 6 to getting them to sit in the mix? Maybe it's just my inexperience but your tone in the mix sounds totally different to me than what you are dialing in on the stomp itself.

I don’t own A helix because I don’t gig live anymore. Mine is all studio work. My tuppence worth is this. I have quite a few amp sims. Positive grid. NI. WAVES Etc. But my go to is Plugin Alliance’s Friedman BE100. You can get it for as little as £29 usually. Not full price. So if you haven’t got a Helix it is worth considering.

I love this amp! Btw have you tried the "Helix Special Sauce" trick with higher gain amps? I was chatting with Ross Bailey #Line6 and he revealed that adding the Kinky Boost (set for boost only) between the high gain amp and its cab produces a really joyous lead tone. It makes no sense where real world effects and amps are concerned but is a Helix/Stomp/Pod/FX kind of accidental glitch that is a big slice of win. Try it out and see what you think?
