Here in the United States, we seem to have traded serial killers for mass shooters. 😣
Yeah but the us is also the country with the most serial killers im pretty sure so :/
Yups. ):
@@martia9176 2nd to australia for once happy to not be number 1 in something
Serial killers are still around love. In our country there are always around 200 active serial killers.
Yep.
"I'm not saying Americans are more violent."
As an American. Yes we are.
Britain invented violence
I wasn’t gonna be the one to say it 🤣
Compared to who? Brazil? Mexico? Columbia? Venezuela? The Middle East? The UK may have significantly lower firearms related homicides/ suicides, but their rape stats are 2 times higher than the US. Also higher assault rates, 327 times more drug offenses, and you get the point. No country is perfect, but you can’t say Americans are more violent when that’s not entirely true at all.
I concur. 😅
My husband and I looked at each other and said exactly that.
Girl, I don't think the anger over Roe vs Wade overturning will ever fade. I don't even think I could watch a video from you about it, I'm so upset.
I am so incredibly interested in Crime Analysis and the disproportionate crime rates in the early 70’s with the Serial Killer mania that was being televised and the modern crime rates of the early 21st century. I am so glad you covered this Georgia! ♥️♥️
I am also in love with all these historical videos of the rise of modern medicine and past tragedies that changed history as we know it.
Thank you for watching!!
Just when I start noticing all my favorite crime CZcams are talking about the same ol’ gruesome cases. ( not complaining) Georgia again comes up with a mind stretching, well researched subject. This is why we love you so. Great post!
Really, once again you have done such a great job on a subject that is so interesting. BRAVO,
Living in Flint, MI has me really thinking about this. It was known as a violent city before the water crisis, and as the kids who were exposed age, it's sort of both sad and scary as to what will happen here.
Bless your heart. The water crisis in flint has broken my heart, and bogged my mine for decades. Sending you lots of love.
Can’t you just buy bottled water?
@@nomnomnommy2955 there was lead in it before we knew about it and to young children or fetus' it's very damaging.
What if modern serial killers are just so good we don’t even know they exist?
That's something to think about.
always a possibility!
Yeah, except forensics and dna are more advanced as well.
@@juliebosgraaf3259 That's exactly why they would have to be so good! The bad ones are caught through forensics before they can become serial killers
There are always at least 200 active serial killers in our country.
Listening to you talk is SO refreshing because you’re so intelligent and speak so well. I’ve learnt so much from you
I have always felt like a lot of that violence was from soldiers who came back home with mental problems from what they experienced in war.
I think this is one of the best theories I've heard.
I agree.
yeah i felt that way too
I know that there's a Rolling Stone article that touches upon this theory.
This is so thought provoking, I’ve never really considered why - I think I’d probably have assumed it was because of the discovery of the DNA “fingerprint” in 1984. Forensics advanced so much in the 90s I would think it would make it a lot harder to become a serial killer
Im in the us, and im so upset about roe vs wade. Do i think abortions as birth control are right.. no, but i owe my life to being able to have an abortion. My baby was missing most its brain, it was incompatible with life. I was septic, actively dying and as they were going to put me on a ventilator i started seizing. I was in a coma, then icu for weeks. The dr did the abortion to save my life. Im lucky this happened in 2000, cuz id be dead if it happened now. Im angry about the law being overturned too.
Id think car seats and bike helmets helped as well because the prevented allot of head injuries. Add that too removing lead and i think they are the biggest impact
I'm with you. It's always the people loudest against it are also loudly against sex education, contraception, and assistance for those dealing with unexpected pregnancy. That Venn diagram is almost always a perfect circle.
I'm tempted to propose mandatory reversible vasectomies for male children at birth; then, at the inevitable uproar, follow it up with, "Oh, what's that? Don't like being told what to do with your body? ... sucks, doesn't it?"
Another great fact to consider! Oh, and glad you are still with us! 😍
Interesting take on seat belts and helmets. I guess from WWII onwards people generally suffered less trauma from life with safety devices in life and the working environment. Hopefully the individual states will see sense and get decent legislation through quickly.
This is a topic I've heard about a lot and so im excited to see that one of my favourite crime CZcamsrs has made a video about it
It had more to do with the counterculture era breaking down traditional family dynamics in the 60s leaving behind a void which had not yet been filled by other social structures by the 70s-80s. 2ndly, you have children of WW2 vets growing up in a culture of desensitized violence and undiagnosed mental health issues. 3rdly, the lack of surveillance, forensics and department wise coordination making it very hard to track down serial killers. At that time people found it hard to believe a "repeat killer" would even exist. Lastly, the expansion of post-WW2 highways making travel easier, the hitch-hiking trend and people being way more naïve and trusting in general (understandably, as this was such a new and unthinkable phenomenon in the public consciousness).
What a great topic!! I never really thought about so many factors affecting our crime rates. Thank you so much.
This theory has always fascinated me. Thanks for covering it Georgia! 😊
Much food for thought. Thanks Georgia 👍🏾
1969 was a WILD year it seems. I hear it in most of the more well known killers. Possibly just because it was more of a "new thing". Serial killer wasn't really a known term so perhaps people were more aware of the "serial killer" in the late 60s - early 70s, especially cos having TVs was more common in home's too. Perhaps they were always common but we just realised it / knew about it because of tv coverage. Lots of interesting theories I'm sure.

This is so interesting! I first heard this theory in the book “Humans: A Brief History Of How We F*cked It All Up” By Tom Phillips which was hilarious and enlightening and humanizing. Would absolutely recommend to add it to your reading list Georgia! It’s only 150-200ish pages so a quick and easy read.

Hello there, Miss Georgia x
I think it’s worth noting that terrorism and mass shootings have likely replaced many of the serial killers
I know in the late 90's in my area, crime started to slow down after the death of Tupac and Biggie. There was almost a consensus that going that hard wasn't worth it anymore.
Lol
You are great Georgia- xxoo
It's like sitting in my sociology of crime class in college. So interesting
I think it's a matter of population numbers. In the 1960s and 70s the population bulge of the baby boomers were coming into their adulthood and when you have more people you have more killers, yoga teachers, or any other segmentation. As the baby boomers got older the crime wave dropped off because older burglars or murderers don't want to stand out in the rain or late at night looking for victims. They want to be home with their families or in front of their tv watching the game. That's my theory anyway 😊
I had a chuckle at your comment. Not being disrespectful, just found Your humor light and cheerful on this dark subject.
Well put Michelle 👍
Combine that with the hippy movement and the pill and free love and women's liberation which encouraged women to take risks like hitchhiking and other _unladylike_ activities and dropping strong doses of LSD on the regular leading to fried brains and tenuous grips on reality and the general acceptance of w̶e̶i̶r̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶h̶a̶v̶i̶o̶u̶r̶ alternative lifestyles and thousands of deeply troubled Vietnam vets returning to civilian life and ZERO electronic papertrails like phone tower pings and licence plate readers and no DNA technology and no personal phone cameras with cheap storage and virtually no CCTV....
Perfect storm non?
I've heard another hypothesis for this. It doesn't discount leaded gas but it also takes into account that toddlers inhaling leaded gasoline in the 40s and 50s were also often being raised by WWII veterans with PTSD and no mental health support.
Poverty is one of the major drivers of crime
Watching now 😎 👍 👍
bit horrified to hear broken window theory after 3 of my windows were smashed and all our landlord has done is put a bit of cardboard over them. super interesting video tho!!
“Lead exposure has a stronger case than the other two”
It’s important to know that there is no one pretty explanation for crime. Socioeconomic situations, poverty, childhood experiences, parental attachment, possible child abuse, etc all seem to contribute to juvenile and adult criminality, but not just one. Lead exposure may cause some children to grow up to be adult criminals but it’s not the only explanation for all criminals. I think many people want one simple explanation for something bad happening so they can understand it better, but with crime that’s now how it works. Crime is multifaceted, with lots of contributors.
Absolutely teach the ones who only see one way, their way.
There is a difference between correlation and causation. Children living in inner cities and rundown rental properties were exposed to more violence, lead paint and piping, poor education, and broken homes as compared children living in newer homes in the suburbs, working parents, lead free newer homes, fresh air and healthy activities have a lower rate of violence.
Maybe there is a gene that reacts poorly to lead exposure? Kinda like some people have a genetic predisposition to certain cancers
I've been playing two dots since it was released, I love that they are doing sponsorships now! I have the game beat and have to wait for them to release new levels lol...
This was a fascinating episode, I’ve always wondered why there were so many (or seemed to be so many) serial killers in the 70s. I’ve not heard this theory before, but it certainly makes sense, at least as a large part of the explanation. On a side note, I’ve played Two Dots for ages, it’s one of my fav “unwinding” games 😄
It strange bc the clearance rate has dropped significantly to the mid 50s so overall more people are getting away with murder
This is soooooo insane! I totally believe this!
16:50 “tingling of the extremities” 😏
I feel like a lot of it has to do with the normalizing of security cameras. It makes it much harder to go unseen, therefore people don’t take the chance as often
That DEFINITELY accounts for the drop off, but not the other side - the rise of the phenomenon of the serial killer 1970s
Could be lead related but I can think of _lots_ of other possible factors
i feel like it should be common sense that poverty and all it’s symptoms are a big factor in crime, arguably the main factor. the sociopolitical environment directly influences crime, as well as the environment itself. not to mention the bias of the laws and it’s enforcers! when i hear/see “high crime rate” i really struggle to believe it, especially coming from reports by people who have a motive one way or the other. the people most affected by violent crime are way less likely to go report it since a lot of violent crime is perpetrated by law enforcement.
however, i do think that high rates of violent crime and “high” rates of serial killers are two very very very VERY different things. this is a super interesting theory that i’ve kinda heard before. it makes sense, i believe “serial killers” are made through nature and nurture but it’s also entirely random like the rest of the world. i think we noticed an “increase” in serial killers solely due to the advancement in communication and technology. it was easier to spread information, easier to talk to other people, easier to be exposed to things like this. i think the amount of serial killers has been steady/declining in recent years due to the progression of society but it’s so hard to keep track because the amount of information available is immeasurable! there’s so many horrible horrible things happening that we’re able to witness in real time, a serial killer isn’t really scary in comparison and doesn’t “make the news” like it used to. but maybe this is just because i live in america, a country made and run by serial killers.
Not me watching this while at work at GM🤣
This was fascinating. I had heard of the abortion/crime correlation before.... My religious family also insists there is a correlation between less god in schools/more violence. I think their source is that notoriously unbiased source: Focus on the Family. (I am grimacing internally)
I remember listening to focus on the family with "Dr" James Dobson all the time with my parents as a kid. They would have it playing on the radio in the car. I was only allowed to listen to Christian radio and would have it on in my room at bedtime when the music stopped and that program aired. I recently listened to a few excerpts and it wasn't great in many regards. I'm not sure what my point was, but that reference brought back memories. Of course less God and prayer in schools correlates with all manner of social ill... Lol. We just need Jesus, not an analytical approach to crime statistics I guess.
It seems like forcing parenthood on unwilling parents in unstable relationships and situations would contribute to poor outcomes. A lot of people think that the looming responsibility of becoming a parent will induce responsible behavior in individuals. Well it's certainly a filtering process, but I don't think people always necessarily "rise to the challenge" and suddenly become different and develop new skills. I think that leads to psychological damage and puts children at risk of becoming destructive and violent. Lead paint chips in low income housing probably doesn't help either.
Lead was added to petrol to reduce 'engine knocking', which is a result of inconsistent fuel combustion. This would make the car run smoother and also increase gas mileage.
I was just telling someone about the reduced crime/abortion theory the day they overturned roevwade. I was saying I didn't know much about it lol
Totally off subject…I absolutely love the colors on your wall!!
Maybe being able to identify criminals through DNA technology played a part in the drop in crime? People were realizing they could be identified for their crimes and where scared to commit them.. I haven't finished the video so maybe you touch base on that topic idk. Just a theory. In 1987, the first person was convicted using DNA technology. CODIS began their pilot project in the year 1990
✅ interesting video
Just because there are not serial killers that get caught it doesn't mean they don't exist anymore! They just got better, might've even learned from the mistakes of those who did get caught! Also, it's easier to prey on people, find personal info about them and contact whoever you want, nowadays!
More likely, some who in the past would have become serial killers are now caught sooner due to modern forensics. Also, they might have just found a better way to hide their crimes such as international travel. It is very easy and cheap to travel today.
@@samgingercat I don't think so! If you manage to attract a stranger (no links between you and the victim) to your place, where you live alone, kill them and dispose of their body without a witness, you can go undetected for decades! At least clearly not get caught before you kill quite a few, despite of the "modern forensics"! That's literally what serial killers used to do and how they were successful and it still works just as well (if not better), wether people like it or not! As to the international travel part, it's not worth it in the long run and even tho changing cities is a good idea, traveling worldwide is not, if you only do it for the killings!

I always figured that bad upbringings were the cause. 😐
Lead. Yes. It’s the thing that makes the most sense. It seems to of created an entire cultural shift too. The tipping point seems to be 1968.
God (secular), Georgia is so great.
I have seen ADHD due to lead exposure and sometimes even seizure disorder and retardation caused by lead poisoning in very young children. I do not see criminality in those people at all. Just the opposite, but in those with ADHD that goes untreated, perhaps it could be responsible for heinous crimes. Lack of impulse control perhaps ? More studies need to be done on those individuals who commit violent crimes.
omg i was just talking about this theory over the weekend with my in-laws. this is something i firmly believe is real. thanks for the video, very interesting!

Thank you so much for this fascinating and informative video!
I agree the presence of lead in so much of everyday life in the middle to late part of last century likely influenced crime rates. Of course it wouldn't be the only component, but certainly a large one.
And extra thanks for the mention of my country's recent Supreme Court decision. It's a frightening time to be a woman in the U.S., and particularly to be a mother of daughters. Mine are 16 and 22, beautiful, brilliant, ardent feminists..

🙌
you look so gorgeous in this video :)
Probably, it would answer my dislike for snowflakes ☺️
Thank you!
Lead gasoline paint and other things was bad for the environment and public health and its a very good thing that we stopped using lead in many things. Of course there is a lot of damage that is already done and I wish we would at least learn from it but the way it is right now I'm not so sure we ever will. as far as crime yes there is a good chance that lead had something to do with that but it was not the only factor. drugs, poverty, overpopulation in big cities and things like that probably had just as much of an impact.
Georgia, this video was extremely interesting and well presented! Congratulations! As a research methodology professor, I would like to point out something. Everything presented in this video is a hypothesis, not a theory. A hypothesis is a statement to be tested to see if it holds. A theory is formulated based on the results of dozens (if not hundreds) of studies, after achieving the scientific consensus on a matter.
In this context, the term conspiracy theories is totally misleading and degrades the scientific theories (e.g. Evolution) in mere opinions.
How is rhubarb and crumble ?
What if it was the economy and not the lead?
🤟🙌
I think the reasoning is very complicated and nuanced and there’s not one concrete reason…. However I truly believe a huge part of this phenomenon is as simple as culture and media (and a rise in drugs since the 60’s and 70’s also). Human nature has always had killers among us, mostly men who hate/rape women or just want to annihilate others . It’s just how they manifest that trait that changes over the years mostly due to what they see in popular media. So if for example Ted Bundy gets talked about constantly on the news for being a serial killer, other messed up guys who are already into violence, rape etc are going to follow suit and go that route, especially if they think they can get away with it…fast forward 30 years or so and it’s now the mass shootings at schools, brothels etc. thats in trend, so more guys who are prone to that kind of violence will go that route. The more I study sociology and human behavior , the more I’ve come to realize just how easily led most people are by the “group” they identify with. So if you identify as a weirdo loner guy who can’t catch a break, doesn’t fit in with society, women don’t like you and you have a major chip on your shoulder (plus are drawn to violence and death) you’re going to follow your “heroes” ie other guys you see in the media who are just like you. That’s why we see guys from different cultures leaning towards different types of violence (in some cultures these guys look up to gang members or armed robbers so they go that route more than serial killers or mass shooters). Thats IMO why we mostly see these trends.
the lead-to-crime theory but i don’t think it’s relevant. 21% of homes in the US still have lead paint so, if lead exposure manufactures serial killers, we should have more than 50 active serial killers
However, lead paint is only dangerous if eaten or exposed to it while drying.
i wasn’t expecting this level of based
Maybe I’m old, but what does based mean??
@@georgiamarie_ means you say things that are true, “based” on facts. It’s often used when someone agrees with you, and your takes on the information you’re reading from are honestly pretty based.
