how to catch garfish with flavoured maggots - Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia

  • I had a very good fishing session for garfish using flavoured maggots. They definitely worked a treat! Garfish can be finicky some times and if you try this for yourself, I would recomend doing it the same day you go fishing because the tuna oil may kill a few of your maggots over time. Dead maggots still catch fish though. In South Australia the bag limit for garfish is 30 and the minimum lenth is 23cm from the upper jaw to the end of the tail. THANKYOU for watching and tight lines!

Funny you should mention the curry powder, sometimes it does upset the maggots a bit like the tuna oil. The fish do enjoy a bit of spice in life yum. • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Thomas. Yes defiantly a problem, normally means there is too much weight under the float. In this video I'm using a bought burley spring cut in half have you tryed that, if not give it a go, if you have then I would have to say the float you have got isn't good enough to use with a burley spring only a bit of split shot you can experiment at home before heading out fishing with a bucket of water and see what weight your float will handle without sinking take a look at my Tommy ruff cape Jervis video if you haven't at the start of that I go through my float set up a bit better. Hope that has helped you out a bit Thomas. All the best David

      G'day David, that was a good idea using a bread punch nice particle bait for a garfish, I use to have one in the UK when we went back for a couple of years back in the 70s. Garfish are delicious, they are tricky to fillet I got use to it eventually, I do them like salmon and cut around the ribs some people slice through the ribs when filleting and remove off the fillet after, there are a lot of pin bones but I don't remove them any more they don't bother me after cooked when eating them. Next garfish video I shall fillet and cook some I do have a winter spot where I have caught some beauties.

      Hi mate, thank you for watching and commenting. The fishing reel I'm using is a 2000SH Daiwa Aird nice and light and small, in the video I think I say I'm using a 6lb leader connected to my fine light braid straight nylon is fine but as you probably know the lighter it is the better it is for casting especially for this sort of fishing. My fishing rod is also very light with a fast taper and a very fine tip around 9ft long you could easily use a 6ft-7ft-8ft fishing rod but similar to the action of my fishing rod I would recommend, also would be great for mullet, yellow fin whiting, Tommy ruff, bream all light fishing even fresh water fishing. This particular area I will recommend choosing a very low tide and get there before low tide and work your way out to the edge of the reef and find a area with ribbon weed it is a large area and real good fun when you get to know the area called Lady Bay. My videos fishing with live and fresh beach worms also my mullet mince video were filmed in this area. All the best and have a great day out with your mates and choose a not to windy day and use my burly recipe or similar.

      Hi mince07. Firstly thank you for commenting in regards to the gents thats nice. Yes with this CZcams I try not to give too much away to easily in respect for the local fishos. if its the Snapper you are referring to I would burley with mushed and finely broken pilchard and try drifting unweighted pilchard, cubed, half or whole pilchard back with the burley behind the boat, you could add small running sinkers if the current is strong. That method also works good for snook. Snook also love frog mouth pilchards rigged on 3 number 4 suicide or Limerick hook or a skinny strip of gar fillet with a piece of split shot and cast and retrieve slowly or also fished under a float, my biggest snook 5and a half pound whole pilchard float fishing. Hard bodied lures 2 inch and small metal lures both in pilchard colours also work well. And thank you for subscribing. Hope thats helpful. Hi ak pt, have you been adding a bit of water if not add a bit of water and mix in the burley, mix just enough so that it will squeeze into a firm ball if you add too much water it will be too sloppy. When this is done you should be able to squeeze it into your spring as firm as you like so that it doesn't disperse to quick. I have just noticed that I didn't explain that on my how to make my burley video silly me, but on my fishing for bream with bait part 2 at 4:54 I do show how I mix my burley. Hope this helps you out. DAVID, REALLY GOOD VIDEO WITH ACCOMPANYING COMMENTS.
    QUESTION: I have been puzzled by choosing the location for garfish fishing. I am used to seeing people fish from jetty's with depth but yor video is in the shallows. Whats the Idea? Is it the matter of actually attracting the garfish with burley and not worry about the depth of water? Does water need to eb calm and not choppy/waves?

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Sasha. Garfish are a species of fish that can be caught quite far off shore boat fishing, from a jetty and also from the shore in quite shallow water. The location you choose from the shore will make a big difference to your catch i.e.the presence of ribbon weed and broken bottom meaning reef, you can also catch them over a sandy bottom I have caught them when fishing for mullet. Non surf beaches are the best choice, both rising tide and ebb tide are good and the choppy water doesn't bother them. Using burley for all types of fishing plays a very important role, Garfish, Mullet, Tommy Ruff all respond extremely well to burley and is a must to use.

      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Před 3 lety +1

      High Tommy"s wild fish, I am going to have to say bungum worms (beach worms) Tom, I'm guessing your name is Tom, so if you can't catch them it's best to learn how to its fun and free bait, the cockles, prawns and gents all do have there place but worms will catch every thing they will
      then its pilchards, squid and live bait for your bigger fish also smaller fish, mulloway also love worms.

      @@davidsheldonfishing9726 Thankyou, I always thought that cockles and pilchard were the best, garden worms also work well if they are on a float. I will use worms more!

      @@tommyswildfishing no worries mate, yes along our coast worms are very good for tempting a lot of fish species, give them a go and more importantly learn how to catch and keep trying till you can. Happy Worming.

      G'day Peter, thanks mate. I add a little less than half a teaspoon of garlic powder 2 thirds teaspoon of curry powder and about a teaspoon and a half tuna oil to a packet of maggots and mix it in it can kill the maggots sometimes but its generally ok. Or you can make a dip with the same ingredients and dip your maggots as you cast in, thats good too

      Yep. Tuna oil, garlic powder and curry powder, on my fishing for Tommy Ruff Cape Jervis video at the start I show how much garlic powder and tuna oil I put in with the maggots I don't put any curry powder in though, just put the same amount curry powder in as I do the garlic powder. tight lines mate

    Hi Dave what other species can you catch with maggots

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Vinh maggots are generally used for tommies and garfish, also good for bream and mullet, they are also good for so many other fish, and can be used with confidence, there are many different species of fly and all of them lay maggots in dead animals, rotting sea weed on the beach, in animal manure, fruit etc. So at some point of a lot of fishes lives they have come across maggots.

      G'day Darren, thanks and happy to hear you are loving the maggots its been a busy summer and looking forward to wetting a line myself. This fishing location is near Normanville heading towards Wirrina, there is a large reefy area that exposes at low tide. Walk out there and have a go there has been a new house built there so now you have to park your car at either side and walk in you will find where. Its a top looking area.

      Gday Vinh Ha. Garfish are generally a summer time fish showing up in quite large schools that can be caught out in boats, of Adelaide metro jetties, over quite shallow reefs and especially where there is a lot of sea grass wading like I do in this video on a nice calm summers day. low tide is fine can be good fun and very productive start out fishing the way I do and see how you go. As always burley is very important used properly and be patient give it a chance to work. Hope this is helpful.
