Dave Grohl hit it on the nail. He was the best guitarist, bass player, drummer, singer, and dancer. He was just the best.
Best basketball player on top!!!
and best pancake maker
Agree with everything except the best dancer. He wasn't even remotely close to being the best dancer. Viewing any Michael Jackson video would quickly put that notion to bed
Michael not no best dancer either he does same dance moves.@@mrmixitup6128
His image has long overshadowed his gifts and talents. He was and still is peerless and deserves the credit for the work he’s put in
🎯 💯
Prince's 80's output was just untouchable! As far as a live moment, I'd say playing Purple Rain in the rain during the super bowl halftime show was just one of the coolest moments ever. He should still be alive...
Prince combined Hendrix, 80s metal, various RnB/pop artists style guitar playing and used these skills SECONDARY to his songwriting, singing, and presentation. Incredible musician. Incredible showman.
Songwriting and general musicianship? yes. Guitar playing and singing? Meh. Not that he couldn't have been great, but he spread himself too thin to be a guitar virtuoso or great singer. I think his musical development suffered from all the attention to showmanship, but his Madhouse projects were very good, none the less.
@@GCKelloch disagree with your take.
You can hear how much he was inspired by Carlos Santana in the way he played guitar. Prince has even said he was. I think a lot of people think he was inspired by Jimi which he may have a bit but it was more Carlos Santana. As well as Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelics, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, James Brown and many others were an inspiration to him.
80's Metal? No, if you are from that era you know this is not the case.
He was James Brown [tight band leader], Little Richard [outrageous showman], Sly Stone [creativity/innovation], and - yes - Hendrix for his guitar talent [he man could straight up play even if he was a bit more conventional than Hendrix] all rolled up into one outstanding entertainer. I left out Michael Jackson, but you can easily make an argument for his inclusion in there.
Wow, Billy Gibbons and Prince talking guitar for two hours... That's one conversation I would love to have in a coffee table book.
Got to see Prince perform close to 50 times. Always on point, never disappoints. Craziest time? Prince on bass playing to 50 of us with Stanley Clarke on guitar.
Were u friends with him or something?
cool. give us a breakdown of the 50 times. I assume over several years. Did he come to your town every year?

Wow, a fan back from '81. I remember my friend was into him in the early 80s, would have been around 83/84.
Makes sense being in Minneapolis. Did he have any trademark things he would do at concerts? I'm definitely not a concert goer and have been to less than 20 in my life but I did see U2 twice and Bono would always pick a guy from the audience, pull him onstage, let the stranger play his guitar and the entire band would leave and let the guy solo in front of the whole arena.
I love Prince, great guitarist and his guitar picks say 'Love God'
There's still a Prince-shaped hole in the world. 💜
1989-90’ish
Eric Clapton was asked “Stuck alone on an island, and having the choice of one album to have with you, what album would you choose?”
“Purple Rain, by Prince … because that album has everything, on it.”
everything except country ... if you truly want everything look to lionel richie
@Kitrik, I see the storytelling, akin to country.
I am a 55 yr old white dude musical taste was everything 70’s first song on guitar was sweet home Alabama fan of metal mostly hair then I heard Prince wow the 80’s insane musical influences
Prince…could sing like Stevie Wonder…dance like James Brown and play guitar like Jimi Hendrix…the ultimate rock star.
My personal favourite Prince songs…I would die 4 you…The Beautiful Ones.
Prince was a musical genius.
Saw an interview with Jeff Beck some years back. They asked him if there was anyone out there that he would like to play with that he hadn't done so with yet. He replied, "Prince. He is different."
if anyones opinion counts ............................................
I commented to my dad once that opinions were like rear ends, every body has one. Without losing a second, he said, 'yea, and some of them stink'!
This is a tremendous compliment, especially coming from Jeff Beck. A man of few words, but he nailed it.
I saw Prince one time for the Purple Rain tour at The Cow Palace in 1985. I wasn't a big fan at the time but my sister convinced me. I couldn't find anyone to go with so I went alone. One of the best concerts I've ever seen to this day. And I've seen a hundred Dead shows and King Crimson, Genesis, Van Halen, Yes, Who, Police, etc. Prince is still top three or five to this day. He played six nights at that old barn. Glad I saw one of 'em.
High praise from Zappa.
I was there at that concert in '85 as well... !!!
I have been a Prince fanatic my whole life, and have had a variety of amazing concert experiences: Van Halen, Iggy Pop, The Who, The Dead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Sonny Rollins, Willie Nelson, Morrissey, Sade, Santana, Jack White, The Flaming Lips, Bryan Ferry, Robert Plant, and Roger Waters in the Zocalo in Mexico City. I saw Prince numerous times. Prince was the GOAT. 💜
I was there 3 of those nights!
If you dont think Prince was the greatest guitarist of his era then you never saw Prince play live its as simple as that.....
Frank Zappa and Miles Davis were 2 of the MOST critical artists in the entire music industry, and Prince received high compliments from BOTH of them which says more than a LOT 😉...👁 would love 2 c that video with Steve Vai and the NPG 💜...W0W!
Not many people know this but Steve Vai gave Prince the 7 string Ibanez that was used in the recording of Passion and Warfare.
When discussions of greatest guitarists come up, few authoritative sources bring up Prince. Nearly all guitarists can be covered. I challenge anyone to look up a cover of The Beautiful Ones. This guy made his guitar speak in ways that simply cannot be covered or emulated. He even kept his signal process a secret. His tone is/was strictly his. I've heard a few guys on Guitar Rig and Amplitube come close. But close is all they got.
Prince is a one man army 💜 I saw him live over 20 times
It wasn't only the song writing and guitar playing but mixing, producing and playing almost every fucking instrument (drums, woodwinds, horns, piano) at an exceptionally high level many other musicians were amazed. Dave Grohl said Prince was one of the best bass players he had ever seen. IMO Prince was a musical genius that ranks up with classical and modern composers and musician's at the very top.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Prince live over 30+ times. I became a super hardcore fan when Dirty Mind came out and saw the Controversy tour in SF (twice). Since then I've seen him multiple times on some tours and also caught him at some intimate spots like The Fillmore. I even got to see him when he performed (unannounced) with Sheila E at the Warfield, when she was just getting started. I would always try to see him more than once on any tour. The only tour I missed unfortunately was his last tour because I was out of the country for work at the time when he came to Oakland.
There is no other musician/artist that I miss more...RIP 💜
For nearly every guitar style, there's a recorded example of Prince doing something amazing with it. As a long time Prince fan, I was always very frustrated that no one seemed to really get what an amazing guitarist he was. Things like his version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the Super Bowl and (most unfortunately) his passing seem to have been changing that.
But if you played guitar you knew way before that. He was on Guitar Player magazines cover way before those performances.
yeah it still blows my mind that so many people never think of Prince when talking of the great guitarists....i blame that on those people only knowing Prince via the songs the AM/FM radio only plays, great songs but w/sole exception of Purple Rain, are not lead guitar driven songs....
@@julianciahaconsulting8663 yeah, that's fair to say.
My favorite..."Let's Go Crazy" That Guitar riff at the end was icing on the cake.
Prince was a master! RIP, sir! We will always miss you!
Voi Vod avatar, and appreciates Prince.
@@chickenbeek Good music is good music, my friend! I'll throw the devil horns to anything that makes me feel alive! ^_^
This was Great! Thank you
Unlike so many guitar gods, Prince didn't need to shove his virtuosity on the instrument down your throat. He would sometimes just give you glimpses of his prowess because that particular song didn't need more than that. Other times he wouldn't even touch a guitar to show his brilliance. So unlike other masters of the instrument. So many guitar greats are such egomaniacs that can't stop with the, "Hey, look at me, I'm the greatest." One of a kind. Once in many lifetimes of creativity. He has fans of all genres and all walks of life because he was lightning in a bottle of artistry. RIP SIR.
"Say that!"..
In 1987 or 88 in Toronto, my college buddy said we should go down the Gardens that night and get some scalper tix for Prince. It wasn't sold out and we could probably get a good discount on some floors [he was right]. I guffawed at first - I liked Prince but in my mind at the time he was a commercial MTV artist - I went to go see bands like Phish, Run DMC, The Who or The Clash, Grateful Dead, etc.....boy was I glad I listened to my friend: Prince blew me away with musicianship on display that night - including the best Pete Townsend knee slide anyone had seen since about 1972! To this day it is one of the best pure entertainment experiences I've ever had. And Prince can absolutely shred on a guitar - and not gratutiously - but musically, and where and when appropriate. God Bless and keep him.
I have been playing guitar for 40 years. Prince is by for the most underrated guitar player ever. I’m not a real fan of his music but I am a huge fan of his talent. The man could play period and play anything.
Play anything my bollox. Chap was a half decent player at best.
Anything, really? I've never heard him do anything very challenging or unique on guitar, although he was an accomplished musician and song writer. In one discussion after his death a naive fan said no one could figure out the intro for When Doves Cry. I then figured it out in 10 minutes. He bounced a slide off the 12th fret and above (along with the harmonic minor lick), and then sped the tape up a 4th. Steve Via said he was a big fan. Consider what he can do on guitar compared to Prince's capabilities. Granted, Prince might have been a "virtuoso" if he focused on guitar, but he spent his time doing too many other things.
Underrated ?...heard of buckethead,John 5, Steve vai, Adrian belew, zakk Wilde,Marty Friedman, Dr.know,Brad gillis,?...and these guys are still playing.
@@GCKelloch. Drink some more Haterrade. Get a clue first, and then rejoin the Conversation.

Nothing compares to u....we love u ⭐PRINCE ⭐
I was fortunate enough to meet Prince when i was 17, he came into the Blockbuster i worked at one morning in Rosemont, IL grabbed some magazines and came to my register and spoke to me i kept it cool but that was a surreal moment in hindsight.
Great video. Just took the Paisley Park tour and we were treated to seeing a never before seen video of Prince at the January 21st 2016 perfomace, his last at Paisley Park. Wow, what luck. Its something that Prince would have done for his fans.
Saw him on the Purple Rain Tour at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse in '85. When I saw the VHS of the documentary Prince and The Revolution: Live I realized that wow, I was at that show.
He was a monster on guitar.
Prince OWNED the instrument.
And now he's gone.
Because of fentanyl.
And no one talks about that.
Zappa saying something nice, priceless
no matter what the harrison kid says he was in total awe watching Prince ... I think he is embarrased at how in love he looked during princes guitar solo
Notice he said all that shit, but then somebody with actual influence, Gibbons, has the completely opposing take and realized Prince had massive talent just from that performance
He said it went down so well despite him and other band members thoughts about it. They come from a different background and that was just a bit of shock when he played that solo and it wasn't rehearsed. He didn't "shit" on it.
@@IgnorancEnArrogance Listening to that song and then the solo when it comes up in my PL gives me chills every time. Prince lit the shit outta that guitar that night.
Dhani said it all so well. More articulate than any other commentor. He’s just saying that Prin was so over the top, at a funeral, but it came out good so ...
@@andrewblack7852 A guitar legend paying tribute to another guitar legend. He made that guitar cry and sing. George wouldn't want it any other way. All we have to do is sit back and enjoy it.
Great video. I've seen Prince five times live never disappointment.
U Got The Look does it for me every time. Wish he were still around.
Was interesting to see Dhani Harrison talk about Prince like that and how the others thought of him at that show.
Always disappoints me when Dhani speaks about Princes performance. He was the ultimate showman and took that guitar solo to a whole new level! He made that guitar weep! One of his performances ever. ❤
Soo Moving to hear All those Great artists playing Purple Rain ☔️🎸🎸🎸🎸...p.s.Prince was More influenced by Carlos Santana...Prince,thanks for the music and being on the planet 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💘💕💕💕💕💗💗💞
Manic Monday was my favorite song.
Simply the best
I came across Prince's vinyl album that contained 1000 and Red Corvette in a second hand record shop in Cardiff (Wales) in 1982 - and bought it. Prince was not well known or very popular in the UK at the time. I later part exchanged the album for another album in the sam record shop - unfortunately.
Prince doesn’t really doesn’t get the mentions/ranking in “guitar greats” discussions and lists that he should. He’s almost too big for it. He just had our raw talent period. He was allegedly an incredible basketball player and roller skater too 🤷♂️😂. I’ve never heard a story of the guy doing anything poorly in my entire life😅. A magical being from another galaxy. I think he lived in divine favor. Likely for living in the indifferent peaceful nature he walked in.
See this is the problem. Allegedly incredibly basketball player. Just because he beat Eddie Murphy at basketball so he’s incredible now? All you Prince fans are fucking idiots. Don’t ever insult the the guitar by trying to say that Prince is too big to be considered a guitar great ever again. Because he wouldn’t even rank inside the top 1000 if we were to talk about actual great guitar players. You see guitarists on his level every single day on the street and you’ll never give them the same credit. Why? Because you’re a brain washed sheep. Like every other person who thinks that Prince is the greatest of all time at absolutely anything he attempted. Even I’d absolutely mangle Prince in any area of guitar. You have no idea what you’re talking about. He should never even come into the conversation when it comes to greatest guitar player ever. Name 10 great classical players there. Name 10 great gypsy jazz players. How about 10 great fusion players? What about bebop. You wouldn’t be able to name any of them. And that’s fairly obvious from the absolute dribble you were speaking there in your comment. I’d put Prince in a box and so would plenty of guitar players I see on Instagram every day. Learn to judge talent for talent instead of attributing accolades to people simply for being famous you fucking idiot.
@@BobH-eh8wu Nice rant dude👌. You’re probably parched after that so get yourself some water. Btw it was Charlie Murphy not Eddie. Besides there were plenty other accounts he could play basketball very well. He was low key and just didn’t scream about everything he was good at from a rooftop like an a**hole.
Don't forget the ping-pong ! x'D
im a metal head above all .. but that dude could play the ever-loving fuk outa that guitar!
I'm always amazed that people are amazed that he was a such great guitar player/musician. i really wonder what rock people like billy gibbons have been living under not knowing that prince was such a good guitar player...
I’ve wondered the same thing. How do you Not know Prince was a great guitarist?
I'd imagine he didn't listen to him much since he was more on the pop side. And when he did, not attentively listen to the guitar during the songs.
As said above, his image overshadowed his talents. Lots of people didn't know how great a guitarist and overall musician he was.
Phish, especially Trey Anastasio, are also a huge fans and influenced by Prince. They have covered 1999 and Purple Rain many times.
On Sep 24, 1999, I saw Lenny Kravitz (featuring Smashmouth) at Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL. Half way through Lenny's set, the lights went out and after a few moments, a spotlight revealed Prince on stage, front and center, guitar in hand. He was in full drag with a slinky blue ball gown, covered in extravagant diamond jewelry, and high heels. He just played a solo for a while, which was insanely good (I'd say on par with Marty Friedman), then the spotlight went out and Lenny's band continued the show. Turns out that he had a ranch west of town, so, lucky us!
Like myself Billy Gibbons hadn't realised that Prince was a exceptional guitar until he saw him play guitar weeps at rock n roll Hall of fame
Oh yeah you mean the most over rated solo in history

Prince was the best “overall” musician and artist of all time.
No one can, or has been, able to do what he did. And we still don’t know everything he actually accomplished. They have said the Vault is simply overwhelming with all the unreleased material.
He was, is, and always will be… The Absolute greatest of all time!

@@2216sammy Very true. It really just opinion based, of course. But, I still stand by the statement that no one has been able to do all he did, etc etc. That statement covers a lot of ground.
@@TheRoyalGenerationiTunes it’s like this. He was a GREAT artist. For real. Love the guy. An able guitarist, and singer, song writer. On guitar I can literally name dozens of CZcams basement guitarists that can play circles around him. When it comes to singing and song writing that comes down to personal taste and preference. I could name artists that are better all around and you could disagree with me. The difference is that I would NEVER be so bold as to say that they are the best of all time. That would be massive disrespect to so many other gifted artists like Bach, Mozart, and Weird Al Yankovic🤣.

I've never been a Prince fan... Only thing I've ever liked by him was purple rain... But I can appreciate his talent.. He was gifted songwriter... And until seeing him playing George Harrisons while my guitar gently weeps I hadn't realised what a phenomenal guitarist he was... I will always admire and appreciate the talents of a gifted performer but out of all the songs I've heard from him I've never really liked apart from Purple Rain... Yay both Billy Gibbons and Dhani Harrison and referring to the performance of Prince playing guitar weeps
Jeff Beck🔥❤️

Saw him live on the same tour at Charlotte and Raleigh and then the aftershow in Raleigh at a club that had a Batman suit on display up above. It was the late 90s and he'd just got rid of the band I expected to see and was my favorite but I enjoyed the shows immensely.
i did .One of the best day in my life ever
Prince was definitely his own man and had his ego. But I can't imagine him not being blown away to hear Jeff Beck playing his music.
Saw Prince live in the 80’s…reluctantly. This girl talked me into it, so I escorted her to the show. All I remember is there were 9 screaming females to every guy, and most of those guys were probably gay. A Prince concert was a happy hunting ground, like wedding crashers on steroids.
So you're gay.

i agree Prince was great on Keyboards, guitar and drums On Bass my opinion he was juist ok
Whoa, are you serious? He was a master on bass. Have you ever heard 777-9311 by The Time? Or any of the basslines on the Dirty Mind or 1999 albums? Really, you could pick any point in his discography. Hell, you can find more than a few videos on CZcams of him playing bass solos live. This dude was downright dangerous on the low-end. Even Save Grohl said he was the baddest bassist he'd ever played with. I really recommend that you look deeper into it.
Bruhhhhhh he melts lines….. funk just came naturally…
Gallagher all the way home.
I've always said Prince would have been the perfect choice to play Hendrix in a biopic movie
That would've been awesome now that you mention it. Prince looked a lot like him whenever he'd make the same ugly guitar face during solos that Jimi was known for. Plus Prince naturally favored Jimi's image with his Purple Rain era attire with the ruffled shirts and giant colorful scarfs and all.
Dhani Harrison is a liar. He was clearly loving that performance at the R&R HoF. In the original video, Prince threw his guitar into the air after the song and quickly disappeared from the stage. Dhani clearly said, "Where's Prince? I wanna give him a big hug". That quote has long since been cut from the video and I haven't been able to find it for many years. Now Dhani is not impressed.
Prince didn't turn up for the rehearsal for that performance and was under strict instructions to stick to the original format of the song. He clearly didn't and he demonstrated that The Beatles were amateurs in comparison. I grew up listening to The Beatles and George had all the best guitar solos but Prince was on a level George couldn't even dream of.
RIP George & Prince.
He really liked Tommy Bolin
