Since it is the most spoken language in the world I'm sure there is lots of knowledge that can be accessed by speaking Chinese. I am an aspiring scientist and I think it would be great to be able to work with scientists in China, even the ones who do not speak English. I also like some of the Chinese philosophy and spirituality, like Confucius.
Thank you for your videos Steve, you are very inspiring.
因为我想要一个挑战。
It's a bucket list thing for me, I always wanted to understand Mandarin, but man it's hard!!!
I love Chinese girl for my future wife
Why learning Chinese?
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
So here's to having valuable things to say likely to go to 1+bn people's hearts.
Steve must have one of the healthiest brains on the planet.
He should definitely talk about his diet and general lifestyle!
I totally agree with you. I am proud of you
Lool, I appreciate your comment, this man is flexible to acquire and speak a new language in a way you might say is a native speaker.
He has been learning Chinese since the 1960s that is 2x longer than i have been alive it was around the time my dad was born.
He's a very intelligent man and just has used his mind a lot and doesn't do bad habits that we have nowadays.
史提夫先生的中文水平惊艳了我们晚辈。当遇到学习外语困难时,您是我们的学习榜样。
My reason for learning Chinese was to recover from cognitive impairment post covid. It worked extremely well which says a lot about how learning languages can protect the brain. Eventually I just loved it and wanted to know more about China.
加油加油加油:)
Welcome to China one day!
How do someone learn quickly
@@crabgreen7039 the wall country?
@@mindhunter8772 I don't think you can, it is a difficult language to learn.
As a Taiwanese whose native language is Mandarin Chinese I can easily understand every thing you say. You are amazing Steve!
No Taiwanese in the world, you are still a Chinese cause you were born in China Taiwan. That's why your native language is Chinese. And now people only learn simplified characters, which have been promoted by our great Chinese Communist Party. As you can see, this channel also uses simplified, cause they recognize our great Chinese Communist Party. No one cares about the outdated traditional characters that used in China Taiwan.
That's because his Chinese is excellent
能不能有点骨气,不要用我们的语言和文字,跟韩国学习一下,把汉字废除掉😂

I've been studying Mandaring for the last 7 years, i'm amazed the way you just got more fluent throught out the whole converstion.. congrats
Steve is an inspiration. Without question in my opinion, I believe motivation (and capacity) is the most important determinant to ones success in learning a new language. This can be applied to most new skills to be honest.
If one has a real reason to learn a language, they will do so more rapidly. If it's just a hobby, they may "get around to it" from time to time but the focus ad passion won't be there.
In fact a postgraduated person, commonly used about 3000 Chinese character.
Many foreigners even Chinese do not realize that.
So as you see, it is really helpful to spend more time to study Chinese on writing, reading and listening, instead of speaking.
After knowing many characters then will easy to accumulate more words of phrase in Chinese.
Pity, many people quite scared of Chinese writing. But the beauty of Chinese is writing, that's why it is called pictograph 象形文字.
我不这么认为,一个字会有很多意思,只有作为词的时候意义才比较具体。我正在学英语,我的体会是,听是非常重要的一环,听得多,其它方面就会变容易
I don't think so , one chinese words has many means . a group words has a single means.
You are wonderful, I love this. Thank you for the video.
If you have free time, you can also learn traditional characters. They are very fun and it will help you read calligraphy works that you see at important places like on steles, paintings, door signs, or monuments.
yeah a tonne of China Towns in the world all have traditional characters everywhere on the signs. I assume the menus inside have both types though.
Finally understand this conversation after 4 months of learning. Dang!!! Thanks Steve for the inspiration
What a wonderful interview!! Love this video!! Please keep the great work!!🥰🤩🤩
You learned Mandarin for just one year and have reached your current level. That is amazing!
I have been learning English for 3 decades, my English level accent is still lower than Steve's chinese ❤😂🎉😢
he hasnt done it for just a year, he did a little bit at 23 and has resumed it now
Steve, you're a speaker of the speaker. Incredible acquisition of language.
I am learning Chinese but only at a very basic level. I love the sound of the language and have always been fascinated by Chinese culture and history :)
Fantastic... Steve is a heroe! What a formidable force of nature and inspiration this man is!
As we all know that there are 1/5 people who speak Chinese, there are many other Chinese teachers teaching Chinese well but at least she's qualified as Mandarin is her native language. I like Steve because he's very innovative, his hunger to learn new thing makes him looks young even at age 70+
看你的这个视频真有种引人入胜的感觉,越看越想看。赞!
"Tea time chinese", great channel to practice when you are beyond the basics, but not quite intermediate yet
My family is from China and I think u speak well! Your attitude towards learning is really inspirational ❤❤
El canal de ella es increíble me gusta sus podcast y cuando sale a mostrar su cultura
She speaks clearly! Great guest! : )
This is very inspirational Steve 💪🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
As a Pole I love the sound of Mandarin so much. I do not understand a word of it but still listen to this with pleasure. I managed to learn Hungarian well.
You speak very fluent and accurate Chinese. Cool!
I started to watch k-dramas in 2019 I think, then I moved to c-dramas, at the beginning I wanted to learn Korean but I realized that many dramas are now produced by Netflix but only the Korean ones are dubbed into other languages. So the reason why I'm learning the language is because I want to watch c-dramas without subtitles.
I never thought learning Chinese would be that fun, I have been learning it for six months taking lessons twice a week, I'm not gonna lie besides that I rarely spent time studying, if anything my time goes to practicing writing hanzi.
I'm aware though that I need to put more effort to learn quickly and not be left behind. Mandarin is challenging but it was so satisfying being able to listen to a sentence or read it and being able to understand that without a direct translation. I feel like I'm playing with a jigsaw puzzle.
Where are you from? Are you not a Westerner? Because only Asians watch Cdrama. Westerners rarely watch Cdrama
Don’t you feel Cdrama super phony, fake and cringy ?
I can’t never watch even 1 min
@@Yangpeiling-de-zhangfu I'm from Central America. Might be not common but I watch them.

Thank you for your videos!
Большое спасибо!!
Today is one year exactly since I started learning Chinese, I've listened to about 400 hours.. I watched the whole convo without subtitles and it's just a touch out of reach, I was able to follow along for much of it, and lost a bit in other parts, maybe around 60% understanding give or take, but if I had the transcript in lingq I could probably work with it. I'll keep coming back to this video as my yard stick.
Depending on how your motivation is, and how many hours you put in, it sounds like you'll reach a good comprehension level in about two more years.
It's a good yard stick
加油! 加油! I learned Mandarin in school for 13 years and Im at best a lower intermediate. I'm always impressed with people who learn Mandarin because it is a one character one word and nothing tells you how to read it language, and for me who picks up langauges fast Im currently learning Russian, French, and Portuguese and grew up already using 5 other languages. I can still say Mandarin is difficult AF. I spent sleepless nights during school due to this language and I forgot how to write 90% of what I learned in those 13 years and we wrote a lot! So anyways good luck and keep going 😂
Wow, fascinating conversation. Thanks for sharing!

非常感谢您老师好我很高兴老师分享了。🇨🇳💖🇹🇭🥰😁
AMAZING! BRAVO!
我不知道,这是我的爱好。我的女朋友是中国人,所以可以跟她练习一下
I find combining two vague concepts into one to become a word very satisfying. I don't think people need a good reason to learn a language, it's good for you and your brain. A far better alternative to scrolling social media all day
I agree. I'm a language nerd and I enjoy learning languages for its own sake. I don't scroll social media all day OR even play video games. I got too much else to do anyway. Yes, language acquisition is a lot of work, but it's also very satisfying and fun in its own way. I suppose that's true of a lot of things though.
I'm so proud of myself right now that I was able to read you sentence without any help, hahaha.
Glad you have say that.

Steve I am in awe of your skills
It’s impressive 😮his Chinese accent is perfect 👍🏻
Wow, Steve Kauffman is an outstanding polyglot, he amazes me anytime. His Chinese is excellent and let's say perfect. He's definitely a big inspiration for us, for so many language learners of course. He's still amazing, persistent and wise at the age of 77. How wonderful ❤!!!
In my case, I don't like Chinese because it's a complete unfamiliar language and it's unrelated to what we know in the Western world or near-western world. Whether it's Mandarin or Cantonese, learning Chinese means knowing and getting involved into a different culture, a different world, really. Furthermore, it's absolutely tough to learn, whereas learning English, Spanish, French, Italian or any western language is much easier, more comfortable and it turns out to be straightforward to get used to it effortlessly.
真的很好👍👍
Steve eres un genio, sin duda alguna. 👌
Wonderful speech.

Excellente idée pour apprendre les langues
This is really great. Chinese is very different and beautiful language
I always tell people, Chinese is just different but not neccesarily hard.
@@npwy1408 🥰🥰🥰
@@npwy1408 Exactly. The basic grammar of Chinese is much easier than that of most other languages. There are mainly two things in Chinese that are hard to grasp for westerners: Characters and recombination of words to form new concepts. But both are abstract concepts that, once understood, will be very logical.
If Chinese people can read Japanese to some extent, it is not only because Chinese characters (Kanji) are used in Japanese. The vocabulary of the modern Chinese language includes many kanji compound words created by the Japanese at the end of the 19th century. This is a great help to Chinese in reading and understanding Japanese.
I deeply agree with you.
It was Japanese Chinese language scholars who invented new Chinese words based on ancient Chinese.
Steve 中文水平已然惊人,但他的思维逻辑能力更强!没有废话,句句都在点上。

I don’t speak Mandarin but I have materials for it the day I wish to tackle it. Hopefully one day I get stuff for Cantonese as well.
But personally I see no reason why someone wouldn’t want to learn it. Sure it looks like it has some difficulties but that’s part of the fun.
Cantonese is more like southern Asian language. Now I start learning Thai and found that the pronounciation part is quite similar.
@@npwy1408 neat. Good to know.
I can teach you Chinese.
Although his pronunciation isn't perfect, his ability to converse and vocabulary is awesome. Makes me ashamed to be a Chinese who neglected my Chinese studies growing up.
Understood 90% of the conversation except for some words which I could easily guess. I learned Chinese from living in China currently for the past 10 years (never really studied it). After a while, it just took one of the years for it to click. Also, Steve called subtitles 文章 which means article or essay instead of 字幕. But his Chinese was pretty impressive none the less. Probably better than mine. Then again, I never really studied Chinese. Environment definitely helped. But what they said is right. You can be in a place and never learn the language. I put myself out there, joined events, proactively conversed with people, and had a girlfriend who spoke little English so we defaulted to Chinese. so that helped a lot. Of course, you won't get better unless you use it and Steve talking to Jenny was a way of practicing as well. I practiced my listening while he practiced his speaking. But the funny thing is, it isn't practice. It's USING the language. Practice is just the benefit of using it, not the other way around. When you change your mindset like that. It becomes easier.
How's your routine to learn Chinese?
Steve, how come you can speak Mandarin? How long did it take you to learn it?
I have been learning Chinese for two weeks and I can say that it's so cool. Before I had no idea about learning Chinese and for me it was so strange. But as soon as I started learning it, realized how different we are. And I am just amazed at the creation of the Almighty
Come on, Chinese is not hard to learn.
As a Chinese I am reading this comment and thinking maybe it is the same as that when you read my English comment haha

Thank the good Lord God for these transcripts & subtitles and thank y'all guys. As a polyglot myself i can only recommend this reverse acquisition method, if U will. I'd like to compare it to acoustic learners learning how to play the piano by ear and have a sneak peek at sheet music each time they get stuck.
Or the visual learner can work from the score = the hanzi, to find out what it's supposed to sound like.
Invaluable contribution, Steve and thanks for endorsing Jessie's channel.

Why learn Chinese: 1) The sheer number of Chinese speakers worldwide, 2) Business and career opportunities, 3) Five thousand years of culture and history, 4) the beauty of the Chinese language.
Did you know there are plenty of languages in China? Not only standard Mandarin (i.e. Beijing Chinese)
I agree with all points, except for 2). Unless you're quite fluent, it won't land you many additional career opportunities.
