Byakuya has been speaking the truth since day one. He told Renji his Bankai was practically a newborn and was far from being mastered. And he told Ichigo that his og Bankai wasn’t a true Bankai. Everyone thought he was just being an asshole, but really, he was the only one who did the homework lol

I agree with his assessment of Renji’s original bankai, but I still think that Tensa Zangetsu just didn’t fit any historical record of a bankai, so he concluded that it simply couldn’t be a bankai. We know that it wasn’t a real bankai because it was basically Ichigo’s Quincy ability to manifest his spiritual pressure as a weapon, but Byakuya himself couldn’t have suspected that.

Either way they were completely absent doing god knows what. If they had joined the fray then they would've found out earlier that hollowfied Bankais couldn't be stolen or were dangerous to the Quincies. Bad writing. It doesn't make sense that they didn't just jump Mask De Masculine 2v1 knowing that each Sternritter is captain grade or above and that they have twice as many members. And I know the reason for that. Kubo is not good at writing dynamic team up battles. The ones he does write are all lame as hell.

As much as Renji gets flamed by most of the Bleach Community, seeing him actually get his time to shine is probably the biggest twist during this arc so far.
His time to shine was already in the soul society arc and arrancar arc.
Renji has had plenty of time to shine. It's just that someone has to take Ls for tension sake. Most of the time, it's Renji. Other times it's Toshiro.

Back in Soul Society Arc, Byakuya told Renji that it was early for him to use his bankai in battle and it would take 14 years of special training to master its movement. Its means that he's basically using an immature bankai and not his true bankai that's why he keeps getting an L. With the help of Ichibei and his training in Soul Palace, Renji finally achieved his true bankai and getting a redemption that he deserves. I also like Rose bankai but these Vizards cannot catch a break and always getting cooked lol.

I love it in anime when characters tell their opponents how their powers work and then get surprised when they counter it
In Bleach, JJK, and HxH it's actually a way to make your ability stronger. By telling your opponent what your move does it strengthens it because you placed a restriction on yourself.
I like that angle as opposed to the random exposition that we are accustomed to.
@@whatwecalllife7034Bleach doesn't have that at all, they just explain their powers as more of an honor code or a hubris thing when they think they've won, as well as exposition for readers/viewers. People think Bleach has a revelation gimmick just because Zangetsu told Ichigo that an ability is more powerful when you know its name. That was a gross overanalysis of a simple line.
Many characters actually refrain from explaining their abilities in order to keep the advantage. Rukia never explained that her ice comes from lowering her own body temperature, most of the Arrancar and Espada forgo explaining their powers and instead it's usually their opponents who figure it out, hell, Gin Ichimaru explicitly lied about his Bankai's capability multiple times in order to throw off his opponents and Aizen only ever told Gin about how to prevent Kyoka Suigetsu from taking effect.

I just thought it was in line with the "words/concepts" thing Ichibei has going on and the concept of kido being stronger but slower to cast when you say the entire incantation.

Although both Kenpachi and Ichigo have never fought with their full power, I feel like comparing them to Renji is kinda unfair. Ichigo and Kenny are acknowledged as phenoms from the get go. Renji has always been an underdog. Even when compared to Rukia. The fact that the guy even managed to get as far as he did with half a Bankai is kinda impressive.
Would have been actually impressive if there was any hint of this power up beforehand and not an obvious pity boost from the writer lol

I know some people don’t like to believe that Renji became stronger than some captains but considering how easily he dealt with the same Mask that stomped Kensei and still easily dominated Mask through several more power boosts + Vollstandig, I think that speaks for itself. And while Kensei did have his hollow mask, I imagine the power boost he would gain wouldn’t be enough to have closed the gap between him and Renji to the point where he could dominate Mask at his peak of his power displayed the same way Renji did in his new Bankai.
Kensei and Rose really need to step down as captains and promote Renji.
Kensei was talking shit about his lieutenant just to get the same treatment a few minutes later. Both captains got defeated so easily while Renji managed to destroy Mask without any effort.

Examples would include but are not limited to: Aizen's full hado 90 cast, Ichigo being able to preform a Getsuga without words, but it's flat out weaker, and Renji learning Zabimaru's full name. This is also true for Shikai and Bankai of other characters in the series like Yumichika and Kenpachi. Plus Gege, the creator of JJK was literally inspired by bleach. Rose's bankai is just mid in general since it's sensory manipulation is only sound based. It's and even Worse version of Shinji and Aizen's abilities

The scene where So-Oh Zabimaru is waving Superstar S around in air is somehow parallel to Bambietta being tossed by the Wolf Jinka Titan!
The thing with Renji is the fact that he rushed his bankai training for the sake of catching up to Byakuya. So-Oh Zabimaru is close to the same power as Tensa Zangetsu, but because he rushed his bankai he only got half its power. Now that he knows where he stands and what he fights for, he’s able to use his full power.

14:55 I think I remember reading the manga that went into detail about the 'absorbing' bit. so all the Sternreitters were given essence of Ywach which became aspects of their power but if they are killed then that essence goes back to Ywach. And he originally gave his essence to each of those Sternreitter as a means of building up his forces to overtake the soul society so if each of them die one by one, it won't matter because he's essentially halfway to his goal at this point. This is basically like cliffnotes of the summary but this is as much as I can say without going into spoiler territory

Lets not get it twisted: Renji has been the second strongest assistant for the first 3 arcs and now is Top Captain level
One of the reasons this moment is so good to me is not only does Renji finally win but he mentions how hard he had to work to get here. Renji isnt blessed with some crazy abilities, his bankai/shikai isnt busted, his swordmenship isnt the best, he struggles with kido, he doesnt come from a clan or anything like that, and he isnt blessed by genetics. He genuinely just put in an incredible amount of hard work to get to where he is now. And i for one very much so appreciate his growth.
In one of the eyecatches from episode 8 it was also explained that Renji's original bankai never fully recovered from when Byakuya destroyed it.
This episode was a message for all the Renji haters/doubters out there.

The true form of Renji's Bankai takes on a more compact form that is predominately worn. On his right wrist, Renji gains a gauntlet resembling the top portion of a snake's skull, with a cowl of red fur surrounding its base.
In his previous Bankai, the blade turned into a giant skeletal snake that fires beams while its owner dons a baboon pelt but the weapon's form is revealed to be an imperfect bankai as Renji now know and reveals his weapon's true bankai: So-Oh Zabimaru.
For those that were impressed by these animation in these last 2 Eps, neither of them have been a priority as the big top-tier animation & high-stakes battles starts next week and for the next 4 weeks straight, so get ready for the main events. 🔥💯

Renji for every arc only knew half of his Zanpakuto Bankai name, oh damn finally it all make sense.
In the manga, the fight was a little longer. Mask tried to attack Renji with a headbutt and a flurry of powerful punches, but Renji brushed them off easily, and then he slashed his stomach.
They kinda mixed it with that cut where mask is bombarding renji but renji didn’t catch anything like in the manga he was just unfazed in the anime
Wish we got more choreography with mask he’s my favorite Quincy by far.

The two captains could've slaughtered supastar had Kubo remembered they had hallow powers and used them.
I don't think that Kubo forgot, there are actually 2 reasons why they didn't, and they are so easy to figure out I'm baffled how many people go for the "Kubo forgot" or the "hollow masks are forbiden" theories:
-Reason 1: They didn't use their masks from the start because they needed to save their strength. The hollow mask being very taxing in terms of stamina is nothing new. In the anime it's stated their masks only last for 3 minutes. They're often shown to put the mask for just a single attack to save strength. Even Mashiro, who can supposedly stay hollowfied for 15 hours lasted nowhere near that long going all out in an actual fight. My point here is, hollowfication is exhausting, so they aren't just gonna use it on the first strong opponent they come across, especially considering the situation, where they necessarily expected to fight more than just one sternritter, and have no clear idea of their number nor strength. When you know you're gonna have to run a marathon, you won't start with a sprint.
-Reason 2: They didn't use them during the fight because they simply didn't have the opportunity to do so. During the fight, they went straight from clearly having the advantage without the mask to being defeated in an instant, they didn't even get the time to realize they needed to use the mask, much less the timee to actually use it. On top of that, in Rose's case, the very nature of his bankai makes it so using his mask on top of it would be useless.
tldr: They didn't need to use their masks from the start then got wrecked before they even had a chance to use them.
They definitely wouldn’t have slaughtered Mask. Mask after a single amp was so fast that Kensei couldn’t even react to him and Mask was tanking his continuous explosions. Mask then gets another amp after defeating Rose (ear drums healed) and then another amp (red mask) and then he goes vollstandig on top of that and that’s who Renji beat. Mask was already too much for them several amps ago.

Interesting fact about renji bankai: his bankai spirit is a snake and a monkey, so at 12:53 when the guy said his sword only partially acknowledged renji, I sure only the snake had acknowledged him because the bankai we seen was always a giant snake, meaning the monkey didn't acknowledge ranji yet
[Tidbits & Clarifications]
- Some people are confused about Rose's Bankai. It's an illusionary type, however, it seems that those illusions can affect reality as long as you believe it so.
- The Battle of Renji vs Mask is nod to when Renji said the he was simply a dog barking at the stars back in the Soul Society Arc.
- The aspect about Renji not knowing his Zanpaktou's True name is something we experienced in part with Yumichikia, If you recall Yumichika intentionally calls his Zanpaktou a wrong name which results in a half-released shikai.
We also learned when Renji fought Byakuya that his Bankai was still immature so it was bound to improve at some point.
- Renji's original Bankai name was "Hihio Zabimaru" which translates to Baboon King Snake Tail, referencing only the Baboon as the King whereas the True Name "Sōō Zabimaru" means Two Kings Snake Tail.
- Many question "Why aren't the Vizards using their mask", the answer is honestly quite simple, if you think about it in most of the fights they haven't needed them. For example, Shinji was easily winning until he was straight up blindsided/caught of guard, same thing happens here, Kensei has 0 issue until Mask get a random power up, then it's too late to pull out the Hollow Mask. Same with Rose, he was winning the a sudden change of events turn the table.
- Ichibei reveals here that his name given by the Soul King is Manako Osho which means "The Monk who speaks the True Name"
He's also the one who created the name Bankai and Shikai, this is important because names in Bleach mean a lot, to use one's power often requires a name.
So Renji's question "What are you" is very fitting
- As many may comment judging by Yhwach's words, James is the real sternritter. This was confirmed by Kubo in his Klub Outside QnA's, Mask De Masculine is simply a being that's made from James ideal of a Hero, which is why no matter how often he went down James could simply bring him back, James is the Fan and as long as Fans Exist, the Hero can never fade.
- Soken Ishida is interesting, he seems important enough that someone like Jugram Haschwalth knows him by name, it makes you wonder what was his position back when Shinigami and Quincy were at war.
- [Sidenote: The beginning of Mask v Renji is slightly different in the manga, it's has more moments of Renji overpowering Mask.]
Wow! This episode was action packed. Renji dropped in like a badass and looked sick, also hearing Rukia say how James is no match for what he is now was awesome. I always wanted to see the panel of Renji calling himself a villain and So-Oh Zabimaru be animated. I need more ASAP!
Fun fact about Kinshara Butodan: The soundtrack of this Bankai is using Indonesian traditional music known as gamelan, this Bankai has Javanese gamelan when Rojuro begin his ability and has Balinese gamelan when the golden statue become faster while spinning

In the manga Renji dogwalked Mask just in shikai before Mask powered up even more. This was a good episode but the fight was cut down. In regard to the swords name, it is very important. Take Yumichika, Ikkaku's friend, when he says his zanpakuto name, Fuji Kujaku, it is the wrong name and it takes a different form. But, when he says the correct name, Ruri'iro Kujaku, he can utilize the full power of his shikai. The reason he doesn't is because he is in Squad 11 which is a combat heavy squad, and his zanpakuto is basically a Kido type, which to him doesn't fit the squad's mentality of physical combat.
Regarding Ichigo and Kenpachi, they are anomalies. Ichigo is more than a soul reaper, and as we know, due to him not knowing his origin, he was not utilizing his full potential. As for Kenpachi, you all will see in the next two episodes.
This scene still makes me laugh years later. Rose sat there, explained his ability and had surprise pikachu face when it was countered. Like it is still mad hilarious how unnecessary and counter productive these dudes explaining their powers is. JJK had the excuse that by "giving your opponent the rundown, your technique's effectiveness increases" but this i don't know.
