  • Hey guys!
In today's video we're going to talk about several tips on how to see the Aurora Australis. (Southern lights!) Many people may not be aware, but the southern lights are viewable from New Zealand and Australia. In fact we have both seen the Aurora Australis in New Zealand and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in Iceland. So today we thought we would share our experience with how to photograph the Aurora Australis (and how to see them)!
We hope you enjoy the southern lights photography tips! :)

That's so cool you saw it in NZ. We're yet to see an aurora. We've spent time in the southern most regions of Tassie, NZ, Victoria, the sub-Antarctic islands and Antarctica and missed it every time. 😂 Maybe in one day 😀

Ah it definitely requires a bit of luck! It's definitely possible, it's just a matter of time and waiting for a little bit more aurora activity. 😁
Unfortunately there hasn't been much activity this year though! 😓

another one to add is, wait till closer to solar maximum that will give you heaps more opportunity to the southern lights as they happen more often. these last few years have been heading into solar minimum which is why we haven't seen bugger all lately :( butt good news is its trending up from here :)

Hey your video really help to learn about viewing the southern lights. I had a query regarding seeing the lights… did you carry any specific devices other than cameras in order to make the viewing more vivid and prominent?

Google the Russell Mcpherron effect. It basically states there are better chances around the equinox (March and September). That's why the aurora charter flights leave around that time. :)

Super interesting! We'd actually heard that autumn was a particularly good time to go aurora hunting 😁
