I have noticed the quality going down but also the prices have gotten ridiculously high. Where I'm at, if I want to go eat at a Wendy's or something similar, a basic combo meal is gonna cost me like $12-15. For that same price, I can just go to an actual restaurant and get something nice. So I have honestly stopped going to fast food places years back and only go very sparingly.

I can have good ramen for the same price as fast food, I can splurge a little bit more and get some pretty decent sushi.

I think the problem for me is that fast food is no longer cheap. I used to be a lot more forgiving of fast food when it was cheaper than any other option, but now I can go get a frozen meal or even premade food from the grocery store for cheaper than fast food. Now that fast food is no longer the cheapest option, there's no real reason to buy it anymore, other than to satisfy the occasional craving.

I've also noticed the severe dropoff in quality. It really began to surface, for me, during covid, when, with many restaurants closed, I went to fast food places more often, because many of them around me were still open (so I had a chance to sample more). In my opinion, I can't help feeling that a big part of it is fast food corporate buyers beginning to push the use of lower quality and probably cheaper ingredients as a way to offset the loss of revenue from sales. If it doesn't cost as much to produce, you can make up for some of the lost revenue from sales. And now, with more business coming back, why go back to better quality ingredients, when you can now make even more sales and retain a larger part of the profits from sales? I mean, if they can sell still you a 2 dollar burger for 10 dollars when they used to sell you a 5 dollar burger for 10 dollars, why wouldn't they? As an aside, I've also noticed this in the area of frozen meals. A prime example. Stouffer's Macaroni and Beef. The beef, legitimately, used to taste like seasoned fresh ground beef. It was my go to lunch meal for work. Now? The meat tastes like the ultra-processed meat you get if you buy Chef Boyardee. It glaringly obvious that they've shifted to a cheaper ingredient.

Maybe if they gave enough paid sick leave, and had enough staff on that people felt comfortable calling out sick, then they wouldn’t even have to worry about sick employees infecting the food.

This is the kind of top-tier journalism I expect from this channel. But on a serious note, yes I've noticed a big decline here in the northeastern U.S. over the past couple of years. It's to the point where I just don't get fast food at all anymore. When I was still ordering it, I encountered rancid ingredients, burned or dry bread, and other issues. I think the cause is probably 2 primary things: 1) companies cutting costs by purchasing inferior ingredients and directing employees to cut corners by doing things like not changing out the fry oil as much as they should, etc., and 2) employees are burnt out and more likely to make mistakes during food prep. The whole country...hell, the whole world is burnt out. People are tired of working for pennies and feeling like they can never get their head above water. And before you say "it's always been this way,"' don't mistake my comments for some idea that we've ever had a workers' utopia. I realize we haven't. But everything has gotten progressively worse as time has passed. 2005 was worse than 2000, 2010 was worse than 2005, 2015 was worse than 2010, and so on. We're on a collective downward spiral. And when your workforce comes from a depressed population, you're not going to get top-tier production. You're going to get mistakes. I work in a very different industry with much higher standards of performance and high salaries to match, and even we are seeing a huge increase in burnout, mistakes on the job, and people filing for medical leave and early retirement because they just can't take it anymore. IMO the fast food issue is a symptom of a larger problem.

Unrelated industr, but relevant nonetheless. A friend of mine worked in a large company, that due to financial reasons, fired 300 people overnight (it was 1/3 of all employers in the industrial complex, from office workers to machine operators). The productivity fell, of course, but not by 1/3; the workers were overworked to partially cover up the loss of workforce. They put up with it because it was supposedly only temporary until the company rebounded. A year later, not a single new employee was hired; the company realized that the workers' productivity in general increased (of course, they were being overworked) so they didnt need to hire anyone else even if they had recovered financially. That was over 5 years ago now, and that friend isnt working there anymore, but most of his work colleagues are still there, and there is a very important case here, companies have been getting more and more complacent to law and we are riding the line of seeing the return of indentured labor.
Context: he and his colleagues are all college students. They have to work to pay tuition.

You're seeing the bean counters putting maximized profits above all else. Above quality, above consistency above well being of the people who work there.
There is also a new attitude that lies to the customer, and employees are ok. If we promise something and don't deliver, it's fine because the share price increased 2%
Then, you have a population that has been traumatized over the last 24 years with school shootings, terrorism, and war all shoved in their face 24/7. Families are breaking apart. The only people that get ahead are the narcissists and sociopaths these days, and poeples morale is in the dirt. Nearly everyone is barely hanging on.

Every other time it’s terrible. I think it’s gotten to the point now where these establishments know that regardless of the quality of food they give us, we’ll still show up. The reason mostly being, we’re overworked, lazy, need something quick and convenient, and since we’ve had good food from them before, that we’ll be back for more. Almost like chasing a drug high. All the great little restaurants and independently owned fast food places didn't have as much savings and closed because of 2020 meanwhile all the places owned by major corporations getting bailout money from taxpayer dollars and cutting costs through lower and lower quality were the ONLY places that stayed open, unless you're very lucky and the community made sure to support a good restaurant in your area. I was a fast food junkie. Always on the road for work, and being an emotional eater, it was not uncommon for me to have fast food for three meals a day. That was until on a more frequent basis, the qaulity of the service and the quality of the order started to decline. The 10-15 minutes of eating that I would forget about all my internal stress, turned into me being pissed that they got the order wrong, or the quality was terrible, or (the much more frequent issue) that I had to wait in line significantly longer than normal. I finally said enough is enough. I should have stopped eating fast food for health reasons, but the poor service and quality of food finally got to me. I just passed two years without eating at a fast food spot. I'm significatnly happier for it.

Cane's sandwich, fries and drink was $5.99 back in 2021. Even with the exorbitant 11% tax in my area for restaurants, that's less than $14 for a meal for two. That same sandwich is $9.99 now. Same thing happening to me. The carelessness is due to companies being too greedy to pay workers an actual wage that makes them give a damn. They don't get paid enough to care and also aren't ever really fired or punished because it's so hard to find people who will work at fast food places. So you can see the problem and how paying them better would not only make them treat their job with more care but making sure they actually stay with the job longer thus improving the quality and speed of fast food. Employee retention at these places is abysmal and it's the fault the companies being greedy.

I live in British Columbia and can confirm that every single fast food place across the board has become far inferior; more expensive; and served in significantly smaller portions here over the past few years.
Only a year ago Burger King in Canada had a 10 piece nuggs for 2.99 with two dipping sauces; it was never fresh and luke warm at best.. but edible and cheap./ fast forward to now and they reduced the quantity to 8 pieces while also raising the price to 3.99; and you guessed it - only a single sauce.
A year ago BK also had the "King Meal Deal" which was two individual cheeseburgers, a small fries and a medium drink for 4.99.. that costs 7.99 now; to add insult to injury they are removing Cherry Coke from their soda pop dispensers here now as well.
Surely it cannot cost more than a dollar or two above the other flavors per bag of syrup if anything? Being somewhat of a rare treat in Canada it was the go-to for almost everyone I know personally..
It's got to the point where we can skip two fast-food meals and afford to eat in a proper sit-down restaurant that comes with bottomless sides and drinks; including a generous tip.
Heck, local All-You-Can-Eat Buffets are the same price as a cold, small "regular sized" meal at any individual establishment.
It's to the point now we've been so insulted by every local fast food establishment 9/10 times that we would have previously been patrons we now dine elsewhere.
An entire roast chicken here is about ten Canadian Dollars; in contrast a Big-Mac combo comes to almost 20 - &I'm not being hyperbolic.
Thank you for bringing attention to this erosion of reasonable standards in North America, Review Brah - I would be happy to expand on these instances and also have more examples to share if it would be beneficial to your video expose series on the subject.

I work at McDonald's in the UK and I have. We have so many families where I say the total and they're in shock. It's genuinely gut-wrenching when I give out food. Our franchise is all about looking good, we have to keep the numbers down, including staff, including orders, including waiting time. We order so many cheese slices and yet we ran out of chicken nugget boxes and straws. Everyone is expected to do 5 jobs at once because there isn't the staff, and yet they still want to cut as many people as possible. Serious policies are being ignored.
It's greed, plain and simple. And the franchises have found ways to cut corners as quickly as possible, and the pandemic has made it easier. I've seen it firsthand, the managers work with us but the people that actually own it only care about the bottom line, including serving subpar food.
It won't stop, I think franchise ghost kitchens are going to become more common, and the brick-and-mortar stores we see now are going to be seen as less profitable so they're going to go. There'll be 3 people doing everything, that's already happening in short bursts, the kitchen will get filthy and there will be more health concerns. Everything will get a whole lot more expensive, but there'll be more ways for regular customers to get the prices down, like the point system and the Monopoly promotion. Quality is going to keep getting worse as the ingredients are going to get cheaper and cheaper.

They assume that if the government orders businesses to pay low-skilled workers more than the market deems them to be worth, there will be a lot of workers without jobs and without prospects of jobs, AND the still inflated cost of labour will be paid in the price and quality of the food and service. It is not greed, but economic reality punching progressives in the face.

Slim Chickens quality has remained high, but their portion sizes have shrunk at least 33% over the last couple of years. I have always lived in a poor area. From my perspective, the decline of the fast food restaurant has affected all fast food joints equally. Work output will reflect pay and work environment. Most fast food places I visit ALWAYS have new staff. Turnover is ridiculous. But at our local Hardee’s, everyone there is a manager or supervisor, and the food is always good or at least decent (for Hardee’s). It’s because they’ve been there for a long time, so they’ve built more loyalty with their clientele, and they make considerably more than a starting cook.

But the only way they ever could have achieved that was by either producing the best product or by being the only game in town. There are people, even young people, who give a damn, and there are others who just don't. That applies to owners, managers, and line workers alike. Having pride in what you do or produce is basically the key to everything. But there are those times when corporations simply get greedy because management constantly needs to show growth to investors. Fast food corporations don't really seek to be blue chip stocks even after their size might happen to drop them there. McDonald's hasn't really had a GREAT fry since they stopped cutting their own potatoes in the local restaurants, and stopped cooking them in animal fat. It's taken over twenty years just to get back to decent.

    • @moedelaun
      @moedelaun Před 7 měsíci +3

@@jklmn101 that’s a problem with corporations and the stock market. There can only be so much growth, but when the inevitable decline hits, shareholders tend to back out. So corporations find ways to cut corners and create artificial growth to report. That’s when you get rewards programs, store credit cards, layoffs, changing to cheaper ingredients. These corps aren’t evil, but they are willing to do anything to keep their numbers looking good, and the livelihood a lowly cashier or the health of their consumers doesn’t factor into their moral compass at all.

I totally agree. It seems like, as others have pointed out the reduction of staffing has caused a lot of employees to either not care about the quality of the food or be so busy that they don't have time to. I've also noticed that any time I order food using delivery apps its worse more often, my guess as to why is there isn't any fear of consequences for messing up. I think two things happened: 1. People more and more started to see the reality that they were working their lives away and barely able to pay the bills and so they lost any semblance of pride in their work. 2: The corporations saw during the pandemic that they could raise prices, run their stores with a skeleton crew, pay their employees almost nothing and still turn a profit. Where a single company accelerating their greed model may have become apparent and hurt their business these places were able to benefit from the pandemic and the expectation that this is just how things are everywhere now.

I live in a renowned wine region where there’s no shortage of great places. Post-COVID, my experience at every single restaurant has felt not worth it - especially with prices as high as they are. I’ve been disappointed so many times that I’ve stopped going out. Few things I have noticed.
For taco bell, the food is usually not as hot, which is strange because I've seen the back and know they use a time to keep consistency. Also the food that i remember, like the mexican pizza, does not have the same flavor, sometimes soggy.
Wendys, there is a change in their bbq flavor that makes in no longer worth getting. Their frosty is a hit or miss on how icy it is, and the burger is also lacking taste, but not soggy.
McDonalds. I have, no clue what they are spending the billions of dollars on, but their new products are abyssal, their menu on ordering a specific burger is complicated, and some items, like the mcribs, should be off the menu and be used as a case study on what not to do.
