Monitor Engineer VLOG # 1 - Chandler Arizona - Festival Day

  • This is an average festival day for myself as a Monitor Engineer for a "track act". We're proud of our show. Our FOH engineer is also the Production Manager and video guy. We run a timecoded show with redundant backups on standby so it's not exactly a Pioneer CDJ show LOL.

    Super interesting to actually see what a touring monitor engineer does. I would love to see more technical stuff. Most people watching you here are likely in the industry- all the cool tech stuff is the best part. Keep these behind the scenes videos coming man. Subbed.

      Thanks! Every gig is different but i like to get the most out of each gig! These days my gig is a lot more like a normal monitor guy I just do my show and not much else. Definitely not throwing bottles of water at kids LOL. But I always develop a relationship with the artist. Fortunately enough I tend to get along with all of the artists I've had to work with.

      Thats a great thing to have man, I agree that every show/artist can be different. I've been a monitor engineer in the past for a fairly big metal touring band, any advice on how to branch out to get more diverse work?

    • @snapascrew
      @snapascrew  Před 5 lety

      That's tricky... just network. there's a few of us guys doing both. I have a few friends who will do Anthrax for one tour then Fifth Harmony for another. Just keep trying to network as much as possible. Just 6 years ago i was the guy who had never done a gig and was adding random sound guys on facebook lol.

      @@snapascrew thanks love your videos. I was wondering when you're doing FOH, how much of a learning curve is their when you jump from 300-500 capacity room to 1,500-2,000 capacity rooms?

    • @snapascrew
      @snapascrew  Před 2 lety +1

      @@renesupersonic that’s a good question. Mix wise it just tends to get easier and better. You just obviously should be always knowing what gear you’re working with and how to use it. With bigger gigs more politics comes into play as well and touring at different levels can be wildly different but mostly just depends on the camp itself. Every time the room gets bigger and the pa gets bigger you get more control of the mix and the stage bleed matters less. Please follow on Instagram @blairbondysoundengineer

      @@snapascrew thank you so much, I've actually been touring for 8 months ever since I made that comment. Did a lot of big rooms and some major US hard rock festivals. Working with larger and nicer PA's with more head room makes it a lot easier, I definitely learned most if not all my "chops" at the clubs and bars though. lol

    Interesting. Have you ever mixed foh before, like for the audience?

  • @georgethompson1535
    @georgethompson1535 Před 4 lety +1

    When you mix do you use a control mix at all or do you just swap between person to person. Or is ur case by case like with w post you basically monitor what he is hearing the whole time as supposed to say Kyle w his band which you would maybe have like the overall control mix but still jump around? Also I recommend maybe doing a tutorial on anti feedback stuff using waves idek lol. Also for playback do you just get one track stems or is there a playback engineer like of bigger tours?

    • @snapascrew
      @snapascrew  Před 4 lety

      George Thompson I just go between the band members mixes if they have good mixes, if they have shitty mixes I will sometimes make myself my own selfish mix to sit on... usually not the case tho, I have no problem being stuck on a crappy singer mix if that singer is paying me good money to listen to their crappy mix. I wouldn’t rule out the other methods tho. I’m willing to try new stuff all of the time. For feedback I don’t use plugins just graphic eqs on mix outputs or maybe I’ll insert a graphic on an acoustic guitar channel to ring out the low E chord. Just ring out the wedge with the mic for maybe 3 frequencies then play some pink noise or tracks through the wedge and grab a few more freqs. The most important thing is to know your artist. With post he would touch the grill of the mic onto the wedge so I knew exactly how hard I had to ring the wedges (a LOT), with Travis Scott he doesn’t go near the wedges so his are way way way louder and would squeal like crazy if you get to close but he never does that. As for playback I like to get usually a few stereo stems. Maybe 12 channels total plus a LR just in case is a good start.

    • @snapascrew
      @snapascrew  Před 4 lety

      Thompson Brothers plug-in chain was likely: WNS, C6, CLA76, Rvox. It is mostly waves plugins and maybe a notched frequency or two on the built in Avid EQ
