Going Off Grid Ep 4 - Welding/ Making - Work Bench - Forme Industrious

  • Filmed mostly in August 2022. As you might be aware, the new workshop has nothing in it to work from for example, a work bench. In this video I get busy making a Steel Bench and I fool about doing other things. I hope you enjoy the adventure. Make sure you watch to the end to see the Beautiful Halls Falls.
    Thanks for watching!

Totally agree mate! I use 2 earplugs on the wire as it leads into the wirefeeder and add desiccant packs in the bottom of the machine to help prevent moisture.

I didn't show it very well but the wire was rusty. I hadn't use this machine in ages. I should have just spooled off all the bad wire at the beginning but I got lazy. Good tip by the way, thanks!

You are the first Aussie I have heard talk about the unique sound of Australia, that was my thought when I arrived for the first time and still is
Kookaburras and Magpies (UK magpies make a very boring sound) together, as Aussie as freezing beer and animals that want to kill you!

Very much enjoying this off grid build stuff :) and that birdsong! that and the waterfalls I'd never get anything done! I spent a few months in Australia in 2002 after getting a reduncancy payout from a job, bought a car and drove from sydney to cairns then back down to melbourne, and the quiet is what I remember best, just stopping literally miles from anywhere and just hearing a few birds and crickets, just amazing. Difficult to find that here in the UK, not impossible, but there isn't as much space without other people :)

Scott, your clamps reminded me. We were working late one night at work, and the boss grabbed a bottle of dish detergent to wash his dishes at break time. I told him he was using the wrong detergent. He said, "excuse me?" I said that was the wrong time of day to use that. The bottle says Dawn, not dusk.
All jesting aside, that table should be more than adequate.
I live in a town of about 3,100 residents, but my shop is about 25 km from the house. It's on an old order Amish farm, so there's no electricity there. I have to run my power tools from a generator, and I have solar panels to power my led lights and smaller electric tools. I'll be building a waste oil heater as we're nearly into autumn here and already the temperatures are beginning to drop. I don't mind being off grid at my shop, as it's just a minor inconvenience.
I wish you well on your endeavors there.

When making workbenches I always leave a perimeter lip of good proportion so that a variety of clamp styles can fit and get a grip. Can't think of all the number of times I had to use every clamp I had down to the three and four inch ones as well. Can't do it with a thick table top.

I'm very happy that I've found your channel. I'm looking at doing this on my own in southern Queensland on the Western Downs. I can do carpentry, wiring, plumbing, mechanical, but I think I need to learn to weld. Most of the properties I'm looking at are lacking access to water, power or even mobile reception, so there should be some challenges there. Nothing insurmountable I believe. I've got the tools and know how basically. So now it's sourcing the materials which I'm pretty good at.
You're inspiring me more and more.

Hi Scott, Nice Bench I thought that the black board on the floor was 3/4" 19mm steel. But with the cost of steel now that would be quite expensive. I priced out a 6' x12' x 12 gauge 2m x 4m x 2.6mm for a trailer floor and they quoted me $616.00USD or $904.00AUD. I was going to ask if you had any kangaroos near your property, but I guess you do. I imagine they keep their distance from humans, but will they get into your things looking for food? Looking forward to more videos from your off grid location.
