      Not just friends-rivals too.
      We never saw Captain Freeman and Captain Durango resolve their differences after the generation ship in “moist vessel,” but Durango could have said something like “now we’re even, Freeman,” but he didn’t. He simply said “The Merced is at your disposal Captain Freeman.”
      We’ve seen Maier of the Carlsbad argue with Friedman in the conference room and Ramsey of the Oakland didn’t like Mariner faking her incompetence, though both had after -action scenes where they reconciled. I know Boimler had some depression or jealousy about Vendome of the Inglewood being promoted so quickly, but I don’t don’t know if they had a rivalry.
      So, two takeaways -
      Lower decks is doing some impressive tertiary character expansion.
      And - the captains of the California class may bicker, squabble, and jostle for position amongst the ranks, but when the chips are truly down, they’ll have each other’s backs.

    It just dawned on me that this was Rutherford's A.I. being thrown into a Kobayshi Maru scenario. Too many starships, all with the same offensive and defensive capabilities, leaving no openings to exploit or means of escape. That was why it's targeting started glitching. No single attacker was less of a threat than the others, and so the A.I. couldn't compute a way out of an unwinnable situation.

    • @robertsissco2439
      @robertsissco2439 Před rokem +69

      In part, I think, it was also an insult to the end of Picard season 1 where Riker warps in with dozens of identical ships. The Texas class was looking for the Cerritos to kill Rutherford in particular. To the viewer, each Cali class was unique due to its paint job and markings, making it visual appearing over a Photoshop Copy & Paste job, but the Texas class ship with this electronic scanners could not tell them apart in its search as they were all similar until it found the one it damaged earlier, so it had the point of view of the audience at the end of Picard with a bunch of identical ships it could not tell apart.

    • @UnlimitedFlyers
      @UnlimitedFlyers Před rokem +24

      Well, I'm glad that the Texas-class MurderOS' threat assessment was so glitchy: in this scenario, all it had to do was start from one ship and slowly reduce the fleet to 0, like that Cube did at Wolf 359. And it already had the advantage of knowing the Cerritos' general position.
      But I'll be damned if this wasn't an AWESOME "Big Damn Heroes" rescue moment trope to coronate Lower Decks' season finale. *What a show! What writing! What voice acting!*

      @@UnlimitedFlyers I doubt that would have worked. Unlike the Borg cube, the Aledo didn't massively outclass an entire fleet of ships. Three of them were able to use a numerical advantage to take down a more powerful ship, but the Texas-class isn't an insanely powerful, alien craft that can withstand a barrage from an entire fleet of relatively modern ships while whittling down their numbers. The targeting may have glitched out, preventing it from downing any one ship in the fleet, but there is absolutely no way it would cut through the whole Cali-class fleet even if it had focused on one ship at a time. At most, it would have been able to take out one, maybe two ships before getting utterly demolished by the rest of them.

    It makes sense how this entire fleet was able to come to the rescue of the Cerritos. • @Aeolusdallas

      they had been recalled for decommissioning is the most likely explaination

    • @jonathanjones3623
      @jonathanjones3623 Před rokem +55

      Or another explanation is that all ships of the California class are relatively speaking used internal in the core worlds of the Federation and are thus within relative close proximity to sector 001 I haven't watched the episodes in their entirety yet but unless it said specifically in the episode that's why I don't think they would have all been decommissioned or been recalled for decommissioning.
      Either way it's in service to the plot just like in first Contact I know John Eaves and Michael okuda they did not want the neutral zone however long away from Earth I can't remember data's specific line when they were in the ready room and they said at maximum warp it would take us approximately something said it the distance from Earth for the Enterprise E and Rick Berman and Brian Braga conveyed that the producers executive producers did not want too much time overlap between the sequence of events in the film from when the Enterprise goes to warp and when it shows up to save the day from the Borg.
      it could be one of those moments where yeah that's not how it would have equaled out if they had done that from the beginning with the intent but it was in service to the script and either case it makes it strange that all the California class Starships came to save one of their own and that the neutral zone so close to Earth couldn't the Romulan sneak attacker earth? or on in this particular case if all the California class starships are so close to Earth and not spread out throughout the entirety of the Federation it is a questionnaire that will deserve a canonical ruling eventually but with the former that's one of those things they had to incorporate as they started to map things out in both lore and outside of lore.
      Although some things never get an answer in Trek any other Universe for that matter because you never know producers and writers may want to revisit it for a future concept even if they don't use it voyager's Arrow shuttle is a classic case and point of something being a casualty of story lines.
      it was a waste not to use it but then again Rick sternbach in absence of it's used came up with a facsimile explanation that that was in fact not the arrow shuttle but a placeholder for it as the real one was still being fabricated before Voyager left for its faithful encounter with the caretaker in the Badlands
      And a Hail Mary later that I found out via the issue of Eco Moss with the arrow shuttle included was the producers of insurrection which is one of the least appreciated Star Trek movies they had the captain's yacht feature pretty prominently in there after all the captain's yard had been established in next generation and other mediums beforehand but it had never actually been seen on screen so they were going to utilize it for the film and voyagers arrow shuttle to the executives at Paramount seemed like stepping on the big moment of the film's glory so they nixed it which is why they came up with the Delta Flyer in the end

Even the ugliest and most worthless ship in Starfleet has fans. All because, it adds a lot more realism to the setting. Even in other series, they had old models of ships going back to the original series. Though explain it as ship designs that were just too good to throw out or ships so freaking rugged. Well, be a crime to get rid of what isn't broken. Minus the fact in production. They were on a tight budget and didn't have time to make new ships. Start with a few fighters coming in. Welcome, but not enough. Then defended/modded freighters crop up. Corvettes, pirate ships... More and more ships of all sizes and banners keep coming, culminating in surviving resistance and New Republic ships. With the galaxy in one voice saying NO MORE! by fighting to end Palpatine and his reign of terror.
      The Star Destroyers on top crashing down, taking their sisters with them, fighters and gunships diving and weaving through the chaos, strafing the unshielded hulls at will.

      4. *[Delta] **_Recruit period_** ~* Many confuse the "Delta" part to mean the Delta Quadrant of ST:VOY; but the [Delta] Recruit period actually means the greek-letter 'Delta', with its triangular letter-icon. The [Delta] Recruit period entails making a *2409* (STO's beginning time period) character, and one from each of the three major galactic factions...
      - a.) [Delta] Federation/Starfleet ~ The standard Starfleet 2409 race-choices.
      - b.) [Delta] KDF ~ Like the [KDF] Recruit, a [Delta] KDF does *NOT* need to be specifically Klingon.
      - c.) [Delta] Romulan ~ Does not have to be Romulan-specific either, though Romulan character-race choices are limited (Romulan, Reman, non-specific Alien, & Liberated Borg Romulan for Lifetime Subscribers).
      You do not "need" to have all three [Delta] faction-characters. A single [Delta] Recruit can unlock 70% of [Delta] Account-wide Rewards. The other two [Delta] faction-characters simply top-off any Account-wide Rewards (+15% each, obviously) due to their respective faction-specific Episodes (quest-arc) content.
      5. *_Vulcan Alt-character_** ~* So if you intend a Vulcan alt-character, and do not yet have either a [Delta] Recruit &/or [Temporal] Recruit, I would advise _Patience_ and wait for those respective [Theme] Recruit periods to cycle around, then make your Vulcan during those [Theme] Recruit periods. That way, you maximize your Account-wide gain. *:)*
