My Traffic Lights - The Cobalt Era

- Here’s an updated video of my basement intersection running with a Cobalt T-1000 with ASC/3 software.
In this video, I show all the viewing angles so you can see every one of my signals going through their phases.
I have leading and lagging arrows, LPI’s, LTI’s and lots of logic statements for different sequences. Since I only have a 12 channel backpanel, I take advantage of ped yellow and other unused positions so I can maximize field displays with solid or flashing arrows, advanced sign board beacons, etc.
Later in the video, I show the Cobalt display so you can see what’s happening in the controller vs what you see in the field. I also go through all of my logic programs that turn my red arrow on and off, my flashing logic for the transit signal, the advanced sign board logic for the flashing beacon and a few others. Please feel free to ask what a specific logic statement is for if you’re unsure.
I will be doing another video explaining them all soon as well.
Enjoy! - Zábava
Still super jealous of your setup!
Hey, thanks! I’d say the same about yours! I was gonna ask when you were posting again but I just saw your update!
Love the variety here! You’ve got several Advanced Arrows, several multi-directional signals, a doghouse with a flashing yellow arrow, a flashing yellow LEFT arrow signal, a rare two-aspect signal with an always-on green ball and a bicolor left arrow that comes on when necessary, a four-way flashing signal, a pedestrian signal with a countdown timer that flashes in time with the hand, a tram signal, and lots more! Truly an incredible setup right here!
I particularly like the signal at 8:03 - it’s a very unique setup that I have NEVER seen until now! A standard red ball-yellow ball-green diagonal arrow setup on top, with a bicolor left arrow beneath it, and a dedicated red left arrow beneath that! From what I can tell, the purpose of that red arrow is to stop left-hand traffic only while allowing forward traffic to continue, since switching on the red ball to stop left-hand traffic would actually stop ALL traffic instead. And it’s even programmed to shut off when the yellow ball comes on, as the red ball will take over and initiate a full traffic stop shortly, so it’s not needed anymore. It’s a signal for a very niche situation-but one that’s well-designed and actually quite cool-looking!
The coolest basement ever
Ive waited ages for this epic garage collection and I also noticed the UK style led button tone/sound has been changed and a few other controllers
Happy new year Kyle, I think it is time for your next basement video.
Yeah, there are lots of old traffic signals in where I live. But your setup is getting better. I really liked the previous setup in the room above the basement intersection.
The collection is always improving! I have some more signals to add soon!
Please explain them in your next video. I don't know if that video will feature more signals or a backplate on the 3M signal.@@TheTrafficTech
@@SkylineMasher you’ll have to wait and find out 😎
@@TheTrafficTech January 2024 I think
@@TheTrafficTechGive the link now.
14:30 I never knew you had one of those Groovebacks with an internal flasher! That's so freaking cool!!
What does that sound mean?
Nice setup👍
Amazing, I love those Cobalt controllers also, I've never seen a pedestrian signal like those 18:04 wow!
Yeah! It’s from the 1940’s I believe!
So where you live has so many old traffic signals?
@@SkylineMasher I’ve gotten my signals from all over. A lot of older ones I picked up while travelling through the US. I’m in Canada though.
@@TheTrafficTechi do live in the US. Also, there are lots of Canadian pushbuttons in where I live.
Love it!
Can you please fix the yellow light on the four section 12 8 8 12 signal. It seems that it has something inside it.
What even happened to the polara navigator? I assumed it was fixed after the video. (16:03)
What even happened to the diamond beacon? I assumed it was fixed after the video. (14:35)
So you are adding more signals to your setup?
When will you make your McCain PV and 3M 4 section?
So, what is the purpose of the flashing green arrows? I have some traffic signal videos in my channel.
It’s just something Canada does. Well, most of Canada. It’s the same thing as a solid arrow in the US. Our updated motor vehicle act will differentiate flashing vs solid arrows.
And I’ll check them out!
@@TheTrafficTech does Canada even have steady green arrows like in America?
Thank you
Have you had the chance to work with the EOS Cobalts yet?
I've found some logic statements don't work the same as they did with ASC3 and Cobalts. Threw me through a loop.
Yeah I’ve been learning that recently. I just switched to EOS for all of our new Cobalt’s and it’s definitely a learning curve. Compatibility mode is gone so I’m trying out No Serve and moving around the ring structure to replicate what I had done with my ASC/3 Cobalt’s. We have some diamond interchanges with pretty complex phasing where I need to essentially relearn how to set up my ring structure and what my logic statements should say.
I’ll likely have all my Cobalt’s upgraded to EOS eventually because I do like the new features and the architecture of the software but a lot of it is new to me since I can program an ASC/3 in my sleep.
@@TheTrafficTechbut why the Canadian melody broke up at 13:25?
What's that grinding whirring sound I hear every time the high pitched electronic beeps are heard?
There's a small motor on the bottom of that UK style pushbutton that turns when the walk sign is on.
@@TheTrafficTech OK, and what's the purpose of that please? Does it rotate a walk sign or rotate some electrical contacts or something?
Is it still possible to use the special yellow phase on the controller like they use in Japan? I noticed that your previous video has the Japanese style on the Canadian traffic signals.
That will be included in my next basement video!
@@TheTrafficTechlink please
@@SkylineMasher you’ll see the link when it’s posted 😎
Link now.
Can you please add a back plate to the 3M signal? There are so many American back plates in Canada.
I’ll see what I can do.
I seem to see there is a pedestrian overlap on the controller? What are the pedestrian overlaps? I can already see the vehicle overlaps.
Pedestrian overlap, like a vehicle overlap, will just display a pedestrian phase over multiple phases. Or a pedestrian phase that’s compatible with different vehicle phases.
Do traffic signal installations on the roads actually have a controller like in the video?
Yup! Every single one of them.
@@TheTrafficTechdo they even have it in the US? The intersection I live near has it. Here it is: maps.app.goo.gl/wXZdydJJBrpSHpBHA?g_st=ic. If you open the street view you will see it.
17:54 why did the pedestrian signal go to walk as soon as you pressed the button like in your older video?
Pedestrian reservice is on and there were no other opposing calls present.
1:13 I like the timer of the signals.
I do not even see a switch that turns your controller on. Where is it located?
Directly above the controller, just out of frame. Or maybe it’s magic!
16:27 what even caused the green arrow to be steady before flashing green?
It’s the way the preemption is programmed. Currently investigating it!
Your next basement video?
As remember clearly, Icelandic and Danish pedestrian signals don’t have a flashing green man. Norwegian pedestrian signals have it at the end of the green phase.
What is the sound of the water for? (31:19 - 31:27)
Good ear. The bathroom is above this room too.
i am a german fan 😊 wow, 16:12 that's german :) nice new video!!!
Hey thanks! I’m still looking for a set of the Ampelmann lenses but I’ll get them some day!
I’m not German. When I translated it to English, it said “Please Wait”. This is always displayed on Germany’s pedestrian pushbuttons.
Why were your lights all in hard flash at the end of the video?
Because I put them all in hard flash at the end of the video!
Did the red light on one of the mini traffic lights actually start flashing or it's just the camera? (13:08)
It is actually flashing. There are flasher sockets in this thing! It originally was a toy traffic light but I actually wired up to work my controller.
Don't see the sockets anymore. I saw them in your videos before 2021. I believe that traffic light is still a toy.@@TheTrafficTech
@@SkylineMasher the sockets are embedded. The traffic light is still a toy, it’s just wired to my signal cabinet and operates like a real signal, all while being a toy.
I believe the flash rate is just getting faster and then slower.@@TheTrafficTech
Your McCain and incandescent ped signal is partially incandescent.
What’s the point of the flashing yellow arrow on the gentrol, Fortran dighouse and the gentrol 2nd generation? (18:09)
Yield to oncoming traffic
Does this also happen when the pedestrian signal goes to walk?@@TheTrafficTech
@@SkylineMasher yup! That is an option.
@@TheTrafficTech this is what is called an LPI. A leading through interval is different because the signals wait for 5 seconds when the pedestrian signal does to walk and then turns green. This is what a red rest is. Chicago does not have a red rest or leading through interval. They also don’t have LPI’s there. I also don’t think they have 3M signals in Colorado.
@@SkylineMasher you’re correct for the LPI but red rest is actually when all the signals turn red when there aren’t any vehicles present. In the controller, you may see red rest displayed if there is a signal phase in ring 1 or 2 that isn’t active.
Is the pedestrian push button over there saying walk or don’t walk speaking with a French accent? I notice that there are some Canadian pushbuttons in America and American pushbuttons in Canada.
No, it’s just the sound bite from Cyberpunk 2077 haha!

I hope the yellow light on the 12 8 8 12 signal gets fixed in your next video.
I have only one Eagle Durasig signal and I’m gonna try to have a set up like yours, but based on an American intersection.
Nice! That will look great I’m sure! I have more Durasig’s if you need em!
Nice! Really? Do you have a shop of some kind? Once I start making money I’d love to restore traffic signals as a hobby!
@@ryanphillips8562 yeah I do. And it’s a good hobby! I don’t do much for restoration but my displays and overstock are better than most towns!
17:03 that GE signal has no diamond yellow.
16:12 German “Please Wait” sign
Hey hey hey, hold on, what is bitte warten means on blue?
It means “please wait” in German I believe!

@@RubiksStars79327 I just did!
Ok but I know you mad?
@@RubiksStars79327 no? Lol
How do you switch out of classic mode on the controller? All the controllers on the roads are in classic mode.
1-7-1 has the display options. If you’re in graphics mode, it’s under settings.
Can you do that on the roads since the signal timer is on the controller when doing 1-7-1?@@TheTrafficTech
@@SkylineMasher I typically run mine in classic mode but yeah you can change it when the controller is operational. It doesn’t affect anything!
Oh my gosh, your next video has not even been uploaded.
13:25 Canadian melody error
28:07 So this is how you would change the phase of any traffic signal on the roads
It’s one of the settings that I would modify. Depends on the intersection of course!
10:27 & 10:28 lo-hi beeping sounds
Is that the sound of your parents arguing in the background?
I hope not haha considering they weren’t visiting me! It’s likely my wife watching tv upstairs.
