Blade Length: 22 inches
Total Length: 30.3 inches
Steel: 1050 Carbon Steel
Weight: 2 pounds 1 ounces
Tsuba: Iron
Handle: Ray skin with silk wrap
Saya: Black lacquered wood
Notes: 2 partial fullers. False edge on spine. Comes with 2 sword bags.
Awesome blade, but the end cap comes loose from the pommel and the wrap slips down, easily. If you purchase this sword, be aware that you may have to re-wrap and repair the handle yourself.
Nice review. Thx for pointing out the QC issues on the handle.
Thanks! Yeah, I actually just finished fixing the end with some strong adhesive. The wrap I replaced with ... well let's just say it doesn't look traditional anymore but it will give a much better grip.
I have a Cold Steel Imperial katana and I am very impressed with it. I've had it for years and there are no quality control issues with the handle or the wrap. The blade is exceedingly sharp and I would put it against my folded steel authentic Japanese katanas and my Paul Chen swords. Great review, as always.
Quite possible the best single gallon cut i have ever seen!!!
Well done Brother!!!
Thanks for watching, Dan!
Definitely! Very sharp, a lot of swords wouldn't have been able to do those last 2 cuts!
Thanks, bro! I think the quality control is better on their newer models (this model has been out for quite a while).
I am watching all of your videos, great stuff!
Thanks. Congrats on the new blade!
Awesome, I love weapon projects like that, hope you post a video of it.
The blade is very good on this, I haven't tried any of the Raptor series, although I think they would be good too, I have all the Hissatsu series knives from James Williams.
Thanks, bro! I've already fixed up the handle and shot a cutting demo with it, it did well, you'll see :]
I've only tried the Yamakami Cheness swords, which are specialized mat cutters (this sword would be better for most things, except cutting matts)
I've reviewed the Hisshou, but not the Hissatsu. I am reviewing the Shinbu soon.
The false end makes for less friction when cutting through things, but yeah it's not as durable if it were to hit against something.
I look forward to hearing the results of such.
thanks for the review! i may consider buying one myself.
Yes they would, but I'm just going to fix up the handle myself.
Now that is razor sharp.
Thank you sir, much appreciated!
It looks like a very strong chopper, probably chop through things just as good as one of those Chinese Peasant War Swords.
i got a CS Warrior Wakisashi at the CS Parking Lot sale so i have an idea how heavy the CS wakizashis are, i am just amazed at your cut #s4 and 5 on the second water jug. they were so close to the bottom jug, and yet you still managed to get those last 2 cuts in...talk about blade control!
YES. That is the mission I have for it.
Thank you, my brotha!
The blade on this one is wider and more heavy duty, and a little sharper than on the Hanwei. But the Hanwei is still really good for the price.
Some people don't think that swords can cut through you in a single touch :D
They can as long as they are blunt.
Great Vid =D
Would love to have both this and the katana to have the “traditional setup of a swordsman/samurai”
So, would you still recommend this wakizashi? You did recommend it for cutting, but if the handle deteriorates, is that going to affect it's functionality, or were you only concerned about it as a collector and for aesthetic reasons?
Thanks, bro!
I'm keeping mine. It's a deadly sword, and good for cutting.
hmm the handle is longer than i thought it was. It looks closer to a KO Kat than a wak. Just recieved my new Ko Kat weeks ago and am planning to get one more, thanks to your review the dragonfly might be the one. Best blade reviewer on youtube ^^
"Folded steel blades are more likely than modern mono steels to have large, unseen inclusions of impurities that may in fact critically weaken the blade. By folding the steel billet many, many times, they achieved a more even distribution of carbon, and worked out most of the impurities in the steel. The result is stunningly beautiful, but we have to believe that if a 16C Japanese smith had access to modern mono steels, he would have switched in a heartbeat." - Albion Swords Antique Japanese swords are primarily collected today for the beauty, symbolism, and the culture they represent. However; they are not as durable modern mono steel blades.
Me too, Wakizashis and Ko Katanas all the way.
Awesome review friend as always!
Does all dragon fly series wrappings and fittings come off that easily, like there is some sort of problem with them?
I would really like to know before I buy the set.
Also do they come truely sharp out of the box?
Ben Dover I'm not sure if the katana and tanto do, but I wouldn't be surprised! Yes they do come sharp.
hello, great review :) i have a question: which one could be the best between this and oniyuri (made by cheness). did you ever gave a try? i would love to have an advice :) many thanks, bye :)
Between this and the CAS Hanwei Tac Wakizashi, which you recommend? For both over all quality, and over all sharpness.
both the ko katanas i own do not have a BO-HI and i dont mind the weight i can still handle the weight of the swords the tenchi is 22" and weighs 2lbs and 2oz the ronin dojo pro is 24" and weights 2lbs 14oz ... would this dragonfly wakizashi be 23" from the tsuba? i liked that it was a bit lighter but longer than the tenchi and that it was thick but i guess they took out a bunch of the metal i want in the blade..lol
I’ve heard that cold steal makes their blades heavier than usual is it rlly two pounds or was that an error?
Cool I will check them out!
that "false edge" how does it effect the durability of the blade and cutting power? ive seen the cold steel videos and all but what really turned me on to this sword was that it was 5/16" thick and that false edge kinda ruined it for me. i wish that this sword was the same thickness all the way down because to me it would make the blades lifetime last longer and would be a good dojo cutter. i have a ronin dojo pro ko katana and a tenchi ko katana wanted to add this to my collection of ko katana
This sword is quieter ;D I also love my HK USP Expert with the can.
Don't worry, it's all good. I have the San Mai Peace Keeper, San Mai SRK, Natchez Bowie, and Gurhka Kukri, and Butterfly Swords, plus 3 CS tomahawks and they were all perfect, so your record is still good with me, overall.
It's a shame about that handle... great vid though! btw, are you or have you already reviewed the Hissatsu? Thanks, bro!
What I would do: remove everything from the tsuba down. Modify the tang. Attach a cavalry saber hilt to it. Make a custom cutlass of sorts out of it.
Not sure, but I would compare Amazon, Knifecenter, Knifeworks, and BladeHQ
My Leatherneck Tanto had a imperfection on the blade too.
C'mon Cold Steel, time to up you game!!
I'll check them out
hi Isreal! I got a question for you. What do you think about the cold steel grosse messer?
greetz from Germany^^
wow for a cold steel product i would expect better, even on my cheapo 40 dollar Musha blade, the wraps were initially very tight which lasted for a WHILE until it eventually loosened up a bit
thanks!
mmmm, i see... so which you think could be better, thinking about sharpness, resistence and less prone to rust (so more durable, a very good blade who could last the whole life. mainly we talk about 9260 spring steel vs 1055 carbon steel) ?
Thanks again :)
You mentioned how sharp the blade was initially. How long did it take to lose its edge? How often were you striking and what were you striking?
I don't really remember, but I've gotten better at cutting since then. This sword is still sharp enough to static cut bottles today, I've only touched it up slightly, so overall it has retained it's sharpness. I have not cut mats with it though.
I'd like to see you review some of the blades from ryanswords, I hear good things.
This one is better, heavier and better blade geomtry for slicing through things.
How would a Wakazashi like this compare to the cobra steel one?
Yeah man of course! But one would expect nothing but perfect since it´s not cheap!
I got a Cold Steel Ó Katana aswell and the the tsua ito wrapping could have been done better on that one! It seems like a lottery to me! Just hope fore a good one!
Thanks for your videos!
Thank You
I'm sure it's just a fluke, but yeah, I have a Shinwa Black Dragon sword and the wrap was good!
wow. what a disappointment with the tsuka issues. will they let you return it?
impresive penetration. How about sending it to Cold Steel and asking them to wrap it correctly?
For the blade itself what do you recommend ? CS dragonfly or Hanwei raptor wakizashi ? Thanks for the help.
Blade seems very good, shame the handle does not match it. Thanks for the review.
Can you replace the handle with the real Wakizashi sword handle?
Hi Sensei, I think Nutnfancy did a review of the dragonfly katana and it also has the same problem in the tsuka as this wakizashi. It seems the cheaper warrior series has a better fitting quality than this supposedly more premium series. Its a shame because this is a superior blade than the warrior.
Do these come sharp? I want to spend the money on getting a quality sword that will hold its edge. Do they have the same sharpness longevity of the storied Katanas from samurai swordsmiths
The Cold Steel swords do come pretty sharp.
Wow I got the Dragonfly Katana and it´s nice to se this vid! My katana i hair shaving sharp out of the box! Same fore you?
Yeah, but for the price the Shinwas are very good.
i'm not a fan of the green wrap but its still a pretty nice nice sword though
Thanks! :]
Thanks :]
I'm looking for a quality battle ready wakizashi, any recommendations?
Hmm, you could like both companies .
Sorry to see a couple of problems with the sword. They are nice.
Richter got the right idea compound bow and swords
Do you think #345 Wakizashi makes a good first sword for me? I really enjoy cutting things and just messing around, also my limit is like $250 please help me outt! I am only looking for a wakizashi btw. thank you :D
NICE! thats pretty sweet, how much was that?
Why buy this over the Cold Steel Cutlass Machete?
got it at Kult of Athena
I looked it up and this swords price ranges from 300-900 dollars holy cow!
where would you recommend getting japanese swords?
are there any other wakizashis in this price range or a bit cheaper which are better maybe?
+mob1235 I believe Cheness has some that are good and maybe a bit cheaper sometimes.
thanks
Where did you purchase this and how much did you pay?
Beautiful
will you get the grosse messer next ?
brother, not sure if you know the guys, but i think you would like a lot of offerings from sabersmith guys. usa custom very very fairly priced swords... made to work, not just show... i really think you would appreciate their stuff.
cheers,
mike
How much for the blade
All that problems with the handle are a shame since Cold Steel is hell bent in shouting to whole world how awesome their products are. With all the problem of the handle is it a functional sword for long term use? Do you recommend?
I’m just about to turn 11 and I already have a wakizashi and a katana from world jujitsu courses
Def dig the wakizashi over the katana forsure
Yeah, back then katana are useful for Long range combats for warriors who dont use the bow. Now you can get a gun for the same price as the katana so if you want a sword, wakizashi is a better choice
The spring steel is definitely better, overall.
Kewl, I use RemOil on my knives and swords.
Where can you get a better sword like this for the same price without the QC issues? Thanks
Try ebay or amazon
Huawei and sinosword, and you can go custom for the same price.
+John Caban Try getting cold steel's warrior series. Pretty much same blade with no problems. This model is known for the bad wrapping, probably because it was produced in a different area than the other swords.
itz a good sword, the chiZa is a great sword too.
Cheap swords aren't good, and good swords aren't cheap.
Those are from the Cromwell Mortuary Hilt Sword LOL.
Well, I won't be getting this one..the ryumon wak seems to be better put together
where you bought you wakisashi?
who knows where he got the sword
Very informative.. thank you :)
