    Fiend pact works amazingly. I played a barb 3/fiend warlock 17 and when I was fighting minions, I literally could not die because I was raging and kept getting temp HP after every kill that was essentially doubled because of rage.

    Armour of Agathys has insanely good synergy with rage or any other damage-reducing feature. Cast at 5th level, that's 25 extra HP (effectively 50), and doing 25 damage to anyone that hits you. Get a taunt ability and suddenly you're forcing enemies to hurt themselves while doing nothing to you.

      Yeah I think this is the single spell that really makes this combo work. Of course there are other good spells and with ranged attacks you wont do any damage with the spell but I just imagin a monk or fighter attacking you multiple times and just dying from their own attacks.

      There’s a lot of stuff that is ignored here. In addition to what you mentioned regarding multiclass requirements, Barbarian features like rage’s damage boost and reckless attack only work when attacking with STR (meaning attacking with DEX using finesse weapons or CHA with Hexblade doesn’t work), for example, and rage doesn’t work at all in heavy armor (other than for bear totem due to some wording shenanigans).

    This is actually a great combo. Warlock’s rechargeable high level slot lends itself to a prebuff of Armor of Agathys and some other non concentration spell like Fire Shield. Also spells like Shadows of Moil can function as extra Rage once you run out of Rage.

    Currently playing a Barbarian Warlock and it's really surprised me at how well its worked, considering i picked it as a meme of "lol, cant kill me".
    Started Barb 1, then rushed Undead Warlock to 5. Custom lineage and PAM cause i was the primary martial. Grabbed GWM at warlock 4. Picked pact of the blade for the improved pact weapon, thirsting blade for extra attack and eldritch smite for extra damage on crits. And with armor of shadows i had an 18 AC. That gave me all the spells and utility i needed, I'd armor of agathys before combat and when those temp points dropped(if they did) I'd form of dread and pop more back up. Most combats before level 8-9 I'd never actually use my real hit points. After that i went back to barb, grabbing zealot because of the theme and its arguably the best subclass for going more barb levels. Maxxed out my strength at barb 4, got extra attack at 5, took my last warlock level there for undeads 6th level feature and to swap out thirsting blade for undying servitude. Then its been barb the rest of the way.
    Its an awesome build for sure, im real proud of it.

  • @brianmclaughlan2546
    @brianmclaughlan2546 Před rokem +2

    I've always found the power level of the barbarian to be fine at tier 1 but peak in tier 2 at about level 6 until it gets horrible at tier 3. So, go straight 5 or 6 levels in barbarian for rage, reckless attack, extra attack, and maybe the 6th level ability (depending on your subclass). Then bail out and go warlock for the rest of your career. Pick spells, invocations, and subclass features that complement what you've been doing as a barbarian to keep the character feeling relevant later in the campaign. If the campaign goes long, you'll be more warlock than barbarian, but you'll always feel mostly barbarian. Be wary of warlock abilities and spells that require spell attacks or saving throws as you probably won't have a good enough charisma at this high level to make them worth taking. Guardian barbarian with Fathomless warlock *would* be an awesome combination, but I can't seem to get both my strength and charisma high enough while still maintaining a decent constitution. One or the other always suffers.
    Anyways, if you take this multiclass, you can keep the power level of barbarian up, while at the same time, nobody can accuse you of being a power gamer since there are so many combinations that are so much more powerful.

    I played a really weird Archeologist War-barian unarmed grappler a while ago. It was fun. I did a Custom Lineage at lvl 1 and took Skill Expert so I had Expertise in Athletics. Start as a Barbarian then lvl 2 was Fighter to get the Unarmed fighting style and from then on I was literally just running around naked doing grappling shenanigans. Then I kept going with Barb to 6th on Path of the Beast so that my Beast bite and tail overcome non-magic resistance. At Barb 4 I took Taver Brawler to grapple as a bonus action. Then all the rest of his levels were Water Element Genie Warlock with Pact of the Talisman to add another D4 to failed grapple checks. Most of his Warlock stuff was just utility to add to his backstory like Comprehend Languages, Eldritch Sight, Mage Hand, etc. but at 3rd level the Water Genie gives you Blur so if he ran out of Rages he could just do Reckless Attack every round and not give advantage to attacks against him.
    It was pretty funny. He was like a Tomb Robber/Treasure Hunter. He wasn't very bright, but he could take a hit and dodge traps really well. 8 Intelligence but he's proficient in History and Investigation and he speaks 4 languages.

    5-6 barb, rest undead warlock is very strong. Form of dread makes a melee much more resilient during combat and the frighten immunity is just a great bonus. Later levels you even get immunity to necrotic, and in the right campaign, you’ll fight creatures that only do necrotic damage.
    Correction in the video. Eldritch smite is not 1d8 per spell slot lvl. It’s 1d8+1d8 per spell slot lvl. That means at lvl 5 you have 4d8, not 3d8 ( as said in the video )

At a critical moment in a match he was contacted by the Ancestral Spirits of his tribe, which saved him. He is an Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian with Ancestral Protectors, Rage, Reckless Attack, and Danger Sense. I've been in the process of creating this multi-class for an upcoming campaign so it was nice to hear someone else's take on the possibilities. However, I am going with a different route than those you've mentioned in this video, mostly to fit a theme of a wild man raised and "saved" by wolves. I am going with a 14 Zealot Barb/6 Undead Warlock build with the narrative that my warlock patron is actively "tricking" me into servitude by posing as an ancestor of mine that can't quite find his way into the eternal afterlife (Valhalla). Some themes to be incorporated in here are: cloak of flies being fleas instead, howling into a rage, a stronger bellowing howl for the level 10 feature of Zealot Barbarian, and the "patron" being more or less borrowed from the story of Fenrir (Tricked into being eternally chained etc.) With him/her letting me borrow their power to help set them free upon the world all the while my character will be thinking he's doing a good thing in helping his ancestor into Valhalla.

    A warlock cantrip I recommend is Magic Stone it says in the description that when another creature uses a stone you cast Magic Stone on they use your spellcasting modifier so you can still use your strength modifier but someone else can't. Using Magic Stone is better than a javelin because they are magical and it can be casted outside of combat because it lasts for a minute.

    Something you forgot to mention, is that Barbarians aren't always raging. As a low/mid level barbarian you only have 3/4 rages a day. In a dungeon, you can run into more encounters than you have rages, or in travel, or if a battle goes on for a long time you can run low on rages, or if there are primarily ranged foes, or if it is a minor combat you don't want to waste a rage on.
    In those scenarios, having warlock abilities to fall back on is a godsend.
    An eldritch blast can help with long range enemies, or pulling them towards you and away from the wizard or other squishies with Grasp of Hadar.
    Utility spells are grand, but I'd definitely pick up a few combat ones too, as you aren't always going to want to rage.

I'm so glad to see this, I was really interested in what your take would be on it. My pick for a straight marshal character would be bear totem lvl 3/hexblade lvl 17. I think that's more than enough to make this build trivable and attractive to anyone. In or out of combat. Also, the whole warbarian (think it sounds better than barblock xD ) concept could make for a great punisher/ghost rider/doomslayer/scorpion themed character, any or all of them. I love this concept soo much! 💪
    In recent campaign that I'm playing I wanted to play as a mele horror Eldarin Warlock of Undead patron to get as much as I could from Armor of Agathys, it also cames that We don't have any Wizard or other ritual caster, so I have decided to go with the book of shadows. At this point it was fully satisfactory to have verry good support options, nice meele with Booming Blade and funny interaction with provoking AoO, but 15 temp hp was a little to less so I get Barb to use it a little bit more effectively :)
    Right now We have perfect Combo with Warrior as I'm usually going first teleporting Him close to the enemy or flanking monster if its in 30ft from warrior and provoking AoO for hit on Armor of Agathys and giving additional Atack for warrior from His sentinel feat :]
    Additionaly thx to warlock and Eldarin I can get Our Healer and Rouge in the possition if necessary or do all other possitioning shenanigans in turn 1🥰

    I made a Barb 4 Warlock 12 Fighter 4 build. It uses AoA and Fire shield for a "thorns" type affect making reckless attacks more of a win-win add in fighter abilities to reduce damage taken + action surge for the big damage output.
    Any barb subclass will honestly work, it really depends on how you want to play your character
    Genie patron with effreti or Fiend patron both get access to Fire shield so take your pick of those.
    Invocation recommendations would be: Thirsting Blade (Warlock 5), Cloak of Flies (Warlock 5), Improved Pact Weapon (Warlock 3), Lifedrinker (Warlock 12), Devil's Sight (warlock 2), Mask of Many Faces (Warlock 2)
    Fighter subclass you want some way to reduce damage on you so that AoA lasts longer, Battlemaster and PsI Warrior are my go to.
    Battle master will take less damage on big hits with the parry maneuver (d8+dex mod)
    Psi Warrior will be able to reduce damage more often as it scales 2x prof bonus with Protective Field (d6+int mod)
    My levelling order: Barb 1, Warlock 2-13, fighter 14-17, Barb 18-20
    TLDR; Taking half damage then reducing it by even more makes you a very survivable character and every time you get hit (even for 0 damage) you deal damage back to your attacker (5 at Warlock 1, 25+2d8 at Warlock 12)

    A couple things to point out rules-wise. Barbarian requires Str 13 in order to multiclass into/out of the class, so starting with a 10 means you're not gong to multiclass until at least level 8. Rage cannot be used in heavy armor, so proficiency would often go unused unless you were going to wade through some encounters in armor for a higher AC with plans to save your Rage for other encounters where you take the armor off before going in.
    It is a fun build to play, though, and one that I've done a few different variations of. Raging + Armor of Agathys is really strong against multiple enemies, or ones with multiple attacks that do relatively low damage. I haven't tried doing it with Fathomless, but I like the idea of having the tentacle. I often use Polearm Master for barbs, so I do have a use for the bonus action, but its nice to have some variety.

I actually had an idea for being able to cast a spell as a barbarian while raging but when you cast a spell it cannot be concentration and you have to roll a D100 to see if it fails outright or only partially succeeds. Alternatively I also considered where cuz you're raging and you cast a spell it's supercharged but it deals an immense amount of damage to you once your rage ends kind of like the empowered evocationists over Channel ability

    My mind immediately went to an up cast armor of Aygathis while taking half damage from rage probably as a bear aspect totem barb doing 25 damage everytime you get hit for the first "fifty"(25x2) hp of a fight sounds reasonably good and wouldn't be dependent on our CHA bonus to work, could be fun with that genie bomb concept but is sub optimal compared to getting eldritch smite and doing anything in combat with our other spell slots.

  • @carsonrush3352
    @carsonrush3352 Před rokem +2

    I've always been of the opinion that the warlock is the best full caster to multi-class with the barbarian, with the exception of the Moon druid/ bear totem barbarian mixture. You only have two spell slots as a warlock, and chances are that you already used one of them for utility before the fighting even started. So for three turns of combat you only ever have one or two turns that you can spend casting spell slots. So for the rest of it you rage and hit stuff.
    I also can't stress enough how good rage synergizes with armor of agathys. The damage resistance effectively doubles the amount of temporary hit points you get from it, keeping it online twice as long. A level 3 spell slot in exchange for 30 HP and 2-4 blasts of 15 cold damage? Hot dang! Even with only 2 blasts you're getting 30 cold damage with no saving throw, outstripping lightning bolt for damage before you consider the extra HP. It's a solid strategy. And if you need to cast a spell, drop rage to throw out a game changer like fireball! My fiend barb-lock even got more HP from killing small minions! He was nearly impossible to kill!

    • @kiritotheabridgedgod4178
      @kiritotheabridgedgod4178 Před 7 měsíci

      I'd argue that Paladin is a contender. Heavy Armour proficiency, still has access to the smite, but additionally has ritual casting, self healing (which as of the playtest material for 5.5e, is now a bonus action), divine prepared spell casting for greater out of combat utility, and powerful auras. It allows you to ditch Dex and pump everything into strength, con and charisma. Both classes lend themselves very well to being frontline tanks, and Paladin has options that facilitate being able to use rage.
      My personal suggestion for a build is, Bear Totem Barbarian 4/Swashbuckler Rogue 4/Ancients Paladin 12. High AC, resistance to everything except psychic if something actually hits you, sneak attack damage to add to your own damage (The Weapon only needs to be finesse for sneak attack, doesn't have to be using Dex), and you can add your Charisma Modifier to initiative rolls. Plus, you get cunning action, so when you can't do anything with your bonus action, you could dash or disengage. Ancients is specifically for the aura effect, which gives you advantage on saves against all spells, rather than just Dex Save spells like Danger Sense does.

    pact of the undead is also fairly good as its bonus action transformation could be useful in causing fear, and than combine that with the kender taunt ability to impose disadvantage and you have a fairly annoying tank
    though mind you my group house ruled that barbarians can use spells that dont use a spell slot, and dont require concentration while raging making the multiclass slightly better with both range damage and 5foot damage

    Ancestral Guardian + undead half orc, STR>COS, 14 CHA and DEX: your grab all the goodies of a barbarian, multiclass out at lv9, by then you get a bunch of uses of form of dread that counters reckless attack if the fright sticks; lv6 form of dread doubles your greataxe d12, making it a decent damage and a monster crit; but we're really here to get death ward and casting it at any opportunity: death ward effectively stacks with itself, because once the last casting is consumed the former one applies; halforc's feature gives one more pseudo death ward, so does pact of the tome you still want for utility with gift of the protector and so does lv10 necrotic husk
    Mind you, if you stayed zealot, you would have become impossible to kill anyway, but this is fun

    Eldritch Blast is still a viable pick. Because the main way to deal with a barbarian is to isolate them somehow so they can't get close enough to attack. But now all of a sudden that doesn't work near as well. Furthermore the damage scales based on your overall character level as opposed to just your warlock level. The only real downside is that it will be terribly inaccurate if you don't have a decent charisma stat.

    The Barbarian from Hell. Love this concept.
    This actually works super well so long as you pick out of combat spells and combat spells that last a set period of time without concentration and don't require a saving throw. That way you can still basically dump Cha with only taking 13 or 14 and Focus on STR and CON.
    Basically: Cast armor of Agathys, ideally before Initive. Then go Raging Barbarian on their ass with extra hit points and Cold damage when you get hit.
    Biggest thing is it allows you to be not completely useless outside of combat with utility spells and social skills if you pump up one or two with proficiency or even expertise.

    I know it's not an official subclass, but there is a conversion subclass of a Pathfinder class that breaks this build wide open. The Subclass is Bloodrager. The key part of it, is that in a trade off for its rage causing exhaustion, which can be delayed by raging again, but will cause additional exhaustion afterwards, you can cast non-concentration spells up to fifth level whilst raging.
    As for the builds in the video, I would argue the Hex-barb is underutilised. 15/5 Hexblade/Bear Totem would fit potentially work better. Yes, you're trading in spell slots for Extra attack and more resistances, but conversely, you're getting an extra attack and more resistances. Plus you're getting an extra 10 feet of movement speed, and you're still getting Armour of Hexes. Resistance to everything except psychic and the chance to just ignore damage, allows you to absolutely face tank everything. Plus, that extra attack each turn, increases your odds of getting a crit, which you can then pump an eldritch smite into, if you're looking to truly maximise the effectiveness of your spell slots.
    I have actually experienced the bomb-barian. I was in a six person party, that had a ranged fighter, a sorcerer (me) and four Bomb-barians. Our Turn One Strategy on multiple occasions, was to have the fighter action surge and fire all four Bomb-barians into the fight. Understandably, not much could stand up against three testosterone and adrenaline fuelled men, and one testosterone and adrenaline fuelled woman, suddenly appearing out of nowhere and beating the every loving shit out of them.

    This build isn't anti-synergistic, it's super synergistic if highly focused. A single level of Barbarian makes the classic Fiend patron Bladelock build, the Thorns build, incredibly powerful. All you do is focus on spells that don't require concentration for the times you do rage. Armor of Agathys scales *fantastically* in regular combat, and then using Rage on top of that is a cherry. The Thorns build is already designed around making it unappealing for monsters to attack you and Rage makes it even less so.
    Undead is also fantastic as a patron, maybe even moreso than the Fiend now. Form of Dread doesn't require spellcasting and isn't turned off by Rage, and the extra damage die you can add helps with Barbarians' terrible damage scaling.
    Hexblade is alright and is the easiest to work with storywise, but Hexblade's Curse isn't as useful as most whiteroom builds want you to believe that it is until level 14 and you already have the bonus proficiencies the patron grants. It will work just fine but I personally would play either of the other two patrons I've mentioned for both story and mechanical reasons.
    Ultimately, single-classed characters are likely to be more effective throughout an entire campaign and any level 20 ultimate build is less likely to happen than political unity. Fighter 1 is probably still better for your martial class start/dip. But if you are desperate to play a warrior empowered by a mystical, perhaps Demonic, rage then don't be afraid of trying this multiclass. It works, it works very well, and I guarantee you're giving your DM a wonderful palette of options to work with for your game.

    Fiendish Vigor seems like it should go with a Zealot Barbarian.
    Zealock?
    Basically you smash the opponent. A Zealot can keep fighting even after death once it gets the 14th level ability. Rage Beyond Death. You don't die until the Rage ends. After you smash the opponent to death you activate Fiendish Vigor. This gives you temporary hit points... So you don't die.
    Basically the only way to actually kill you is to leave the battle or hit you with something like a Powerword Kill.

      @@SkullSplitter when fighting past 0 hp you still have to make death saves. That means if you are hit you get 2 fails. So after 2 hits you are dead as soon as the rage ends. The rage won't last until you complete a short or full rest.... So no

    • @SkullSplitter
      @SkullSplitter  Před rokem

      Oh yea, totally get it. We were talking about the level 1 spell; as we read it it's basically power word kill for a zealot that's deep into death saves. Since they have the lowest hit points (0) they fall asleep and their rage ends. We only know this so well because the big bad in our last campaign was a zealot and we were throwing out hints like having material components of sleep conveniently being in would be mage assassin's gear. www.skullsplitterdice.com/pages/dnd5e-sleep

    I'm playing around with that multiclass on a Tiefling who was thrown out by their patron and are angry about it.
    Basically use AoA, run in, rage. My build ping pongs between levels in each class a bit but I was thinking about wild magic barbarian and fiend patron as far as I recall.
    I don't have the build in front of me right now but I really liked the option starting warlock for the anti-control-saving-throw-proficiencies normal barbarians usually don't have plus fiendish resilience for an extra damage resistance. Also, once AoA runs out we can try to hard-hit an enemy (at least in those fights with many enemies) to gain back temp hit points that are worth double mostly because of damage reduction while raging. Sadly, we can't "heal" our AoA with this, that would be far cooler

    Ok, hear me out... play your first 10 to 14 levels as a celestial pact of the blade warlock, then take 6 levels of barbarian. Yes, you will be missing out on medium armor (unless you choose mountain dwarf), but you'll be surprisingly tanky for being a warlock and you'll have the healing to keep yourself alive.

    expanding on the first barbarian using the celestial patron, I actually tried out this build in a short campaign that went up to level 10. I actually started of a little different and went primarily 3 straight barbarian levels for extra attack (I went zealot for thematic reasons though and a bit of extra damage). I went celestial warlock rest of the way taking the pact of the chain and the invocation "Gift of the ever-living ones" this way you get some really reliable healing as a bonus action making you very hard to kill especially with mirror image and armor of agathys adding even more tankiness. If I had to continue with this character which is something I would like to do sometime in the future i would probably go warlock rest of the way for better spell slots for armor of agathys and more healing dice though I might stop at 9 warlock levels and go something else though I can't know that without playing.

    So I actually made one of these Warlock/Barbarians about a year ago. I recommend the build only for Evil players as the entire premise is you're possessed by a cannibal spirit and have to eat humanoids regularly. It's 7 Pact of the Undead Warlock/13 Path of the Beast Barbarian. Most of the spells taken are illusion base so you can deceive prey, same with Mirror Images. The idea is you present as a frail caster till they get close. First round activate Form of Dread and buff with Mirror Image, stick to using what spells or cantrips you can till you either get closer or someone gets close to you. Rage to enter your Form of the Beast which stacks with Form of Dread, extra temp HP you now have a Claw multi-attack which hits up to 4 times and each hit causes enemies to make a Wis save or be frightened of you. You can also force Infectious Fury with these hits potentially making them take an extra 2d12 per failed Wis save (separate from the first saves). This is basically a PC turning into a literal monster. Great for horror or evil campaigns. ddb.ac/characters/85948360/ylnNqV
