  • Why is Penn State football missing out on recruits in the class of 2025? A lot of the issues stem from a lackluster NIL initiative. Locked On Nittany Lions host Zach Seyko and Penn State Rivals publisher Richie O'Leary debate where Penn State's greatest problems lie with NIL and how they can improve them. Find out the biggest challenges that James Franklin and the Nittany Lions face and how they can overcome them. Should Penn State take a page out of Rutgers' recruiting playbook? Doubling as the Rutgers Rivals publisher, Richie helps put into perspective why Greg Schiano has been so successful with recruiting in the class of 2025.

IF that is why donors are holding back, that's a statement about their character. No one with the program today had ANYTHING to do with the past so harming them is simply self serving. Furthermore, anyone who just blindly states that PSU should "honor JoPa" is delusional about ALL of the ramifications of doing it. It will affect everything from recruiting (yes, programs will use that against us with recruits - I would if I was another program) to public perception. Public perception matters in today's environment for many reasons. I'm not saying NOT honor JoPa, but withholding donations over that is simply vindictive against people who are innocent.

Nil maybe an issue to a certain extent. But i think its more about how Franklin is using it. He is using it to keep the kids that are already on campus not to bring a kid to campus and i agree with the way coach is using it. I believe no matter how much money was in NIL i think Franklin would use it the same way. And if a kids first question is about how much they can get then that kid out the door

In the years immediately preceding NIL, I recall a lot of pundits and commenters making the simple statement that "the players deserve to get paid a little bit for their names, images, and likeness." Fair enough, they do a lot of work and rewarding that work seemed like the right thing to do. But just as in life, when you pray for rain, you should also prepare to deal with the mud. We are left with what amounts to free agency, and we know that the usual college football suspects will always find a way to buy championships. The choices for fans are to either pony up or accept mediocrity.

I think we have hit a weird spot in the James Franklin era. Imo he hasn’t elevated them near enough. He’s a good recruiter but even that which I considered his fall back is wavering. He hasn’t elevated the program to where they want to be and I think we’ve kind of seen what we are going to get. He can’t elevate the program to be like other schools and he doesn’t cultivate talent at certain positions well. My main concern is QB. He gets talent and for whatever reason no Penn State QBs are drafted high.

Id challenge anyone who says its wrong that if you were put in these kids shoes youd do any different. 95% dont want to hear it unless they are Arch Manning coming from money.
Bottom line is Franklin doesn't want to do anything "unethical"
Recruiting HS players won't work in this day and age. Compared to Georgia, Texas, Oregon and Ohio State etc PSU doesn't develop players enough.
