This is my 59 Bel Air. I am the second owner, and have owned the car since March 1978. I paid $75.00 for it, with 58,000 miles at that time. It is still mostly original, other than it has been repainted, by me, in 1984. Dashboard still has the factory original paint and gauges. Everything on the car works great.
Options are, clock, deluxe heater, two speed electric wipers, AM radio,Tissue Dispenser, parking brake alarm...blinking red light in very beginning of video... EZI glass...tinted, rocker moldings, vent shades and license plate pocket guard...gas filler is behind license plate.
The engine is a 348 cid 250 hp Turbo Thrust V-8, that has never been overhauled. It has a 4-Jet Rochester carb. The power steering is driven off the rear of the generator...yes it has a DC generator....not a AC alternator with diodes to change the AC to DC current. Power brakes are boosted by factory Bendix booster. Trans is a 3 speed manual and axle ratio is 3.36 to1.
Driving it from Michigan to Georgia it got 18 mpg and used no oil. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
My first car was a 59 Chev Biscayne 2dr. I got it the week between Christmas and New Years in 1979 for $200. I was 17 and 3/4 years old at the time. The car was midnight blue and had been sitting in a yard on SE Tibbetts street in Portland Oregon for years. It had been purchased at public auction in 1962 and driven until 1969 when it was parked with 102,000 miles . Owner told me it was used as a second car and driven sparingly due to poor fuel economy issues. It had the high horse 348 w/ 11.25 to 1 compression and solid Duntov cam. Single Carter WCFB carb. Column stick manual 3 speed w/ manual steering and brakes. It had been an Oregon State Highway Patrol car. It was fast! Could beat most anything on the street except the big block Chryslers. I had a lot of fun in that car. I'm now finishing up my second 59 Biscayne at 54 years old. Love those old Chevys! Glen
Glen, Do you still own it? Would be worth some money! My stock 250hp 348 gets around 19 to 20 mpg city or highway. It really gets up and goes, when I get on it. I added the power steering and power brakes from a couple different 59 Impala parts cars. I did need to rebuild and restore the the power steering and power brake setup. My 348 had a Carter WCFB, but I took it off to rebuild and put the Rochester 4 Jet on, why waiting for the Carter's rebuild kit. I just for some reason never put the Carter back on. It runs great with the Rochester 4 Jet, so I just left it on the engine. I still have the Carter all rebuilt sitting in a box. May put it back on in the future.
My first was a 59 chev from the neighbors kid for 75$ when I was 14 yrs old. I then bought a different one when I was 16 to be a daily driver. A horrible rust bucket for 450$ I now have a resto modded 2 dr with a ZZ4 motor and 700R4 trans. Hell yes. Coolest car ever.
My first car was a 59 Biscayne 348 POLICE! 320 horse 11:25 to 1 Duntov solid cam w manual 3 speed, manual steering and brakes. Did 130+ in the top end. Had been a former Oregon state highway patrol car. Midnight blue 2 door post highway pursuit car. VERY fast and fun to drive. A real sleeper on the street. Used to rocket past just about anything short of 440 mopars and the like. What memories!
Unusual to see a 3 on the tree with a 348, power steering and power brakes.
I added the power steering and power brakes, from parts cars, over 30 years ago. I completely rebuilt them before installing them. I drives so much nicer with them.
That's certainly a gorgeous old car. I know you love it dearly.
It's my favorite car.....
I love it! My grandpa drove a 59 Impala until it was wrecked and replaced by...a 66 Galaxie!
My dad traded his 59 Parkwood in for a 66 Country Sedan. They were awesome. What happened to styling???
What a nice car. I had a 1960 station wagon. They are a great car and a soft ride. Way better than the throw away junk they make now. Thanks for the ride
I enjoyed the engine power sounds too.
You better take care of the ol' gal, she's a buetty.. :)
Such a beautiful car :)
I'm a Mustang guy myself, but I still dream about having a '59 Bel Air.
Lol. Your car was still a teenager in 78. Thanks for sharing.
LOL..... yea, I was seventeen the car was nineteen.
Now that is a car I love to see. Freaking all original! Can't believe the engine and trans are original that's just amazing. If owned that, you wouldn't get me out of it.
i love it when you flick the turn signal switch, you hear metal snapping instead of plastic....lovely car and I hope she'll be around for many miles to come =)
awesome car, I have a 59 chev also which I got in 1979 from my grandpa who bought it new. Mine is a three on the tree also, but now power steering or brakes, take good care of her!
Beautiful car! Thanks for keeping it on the road. That's a very nice area!
Time and time again, I come back to this video. Such a beautiful car. I hope to own one some day.
The grin on this man's face says it all. It's a lovely car, I would be smitten if I had an example like it.
Simply outstanding! I learned to drive on an old 53 Chevy truck, pump starter w/ 3 on the tree....still love to drive them. Be well.
Very nice car and I like how you took the time to show how the car operates and drives
What a great car.
I was born and raised in Monroe, Mich, but I’ve lived about an hour west of Savannah for the last 30 years. As I was watching your video I thought to myself, that looks like Hwy. 80 going to Tybee Island. Low and behold it was! It’s wild how we live in a small world! I would love to m wet you sometime and see your car! You are my kind of fellow. We share a lot of the same ideas when it comes to cars! I enjoy your videos immensely!
Listening to Chicago. I knew you were a great guy!
Love your '59 Bel Air! My first car was a 64 Biscayne 6 cyl, 3 on the tree, fun driver.
ah the good ole classics, have a 55 chevy Bel-Air sitting in my garage,, still runs great to this day
Thank you so much for sharing this video of your beautiful car! :) How nice to take a ride in it, with you!
I wish Iowa allowed you to keep the old plates. You are lucky to live wherever you do.
My father had one Chevrolet Belair 1959 between 1959 and 1961, it was red and white.. It was my beloved car and I remember its details when my father was taking us to Mosul city/Iraq from our country house. I still long for those days.
My dad had the station wagon version (Parkwood), I remember as a kid, There is photos of it in this video at 1:41 czcams.com/video/IQ_QcLr63jU/video.html Been looking for a somewhat decent one for years, to restore.
What a beautiful car! And in great, well conserved shape.
You have a wonderful car! I just love it! '59 chevy is my dream car. The best looking car I've seen so far. By the way you (the driver of the Bel Air) are a good man for saving and taking care of this classic beauty. Thank you for making a good video and sharing! Good luck to you and the car! :)
my dream car's Is 2 years older than yours
Can I just say, what an amazing comment you made about that guy's $75 bargain Chevrolet Bel Air. YOU said it EXACTLY as I would have said it ! ...sssSpoooky =D
So, anyway, yes I totally agree with you (in your 100% 'spot-On' comment.)
= He's obviously a good man for saving such a beautiful and sturdy 1959 Bel Air like he has done. A real romance and he has a nice smiley way of telling the tale too, I thought. ; )
Man, that is one sweet Chevy! I had a '59 Impala Sport Sedan (4 door flattop) about 32 years ago that I got for painting a guy's Granada. White with a red and white interior. 235 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree, 64,000 original miles. Unfortunately I sold it before I had a chance to do anything with it.
I love it. Thanks for video. Mr Marv, Perth Australia
Thats a beautiful car
What a car! I remember my uncle's 59 2door, 3speed/6cylinder....
My first car was also a 59 Bel Air, but mine was a push-button 2 speed automatic. I wish I'd have kept it. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video, your car is truely stunning.
Those dice would drive me nuts! I wanted to reach into the screen and yank them down!
Finally... Someone who knows how to drive.
What a nice price you paid for this car, I like the design of the taillights on this 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air. Very nice looking car.
Great looking car, thanks for sharing.
What a car, tail-lights really make it amazing
No, I traded it for a 60 impala 283 Powerglide that looked a lot nicer but was a dog. I'm now fixing to retire in 7 months and finishing up my 59 Biscayne project that I've owned since 97. It just needs interior and a few trim pieces polished and installed. Has a stock 348 like yours w/4 speed. Runs good but nothing like that 348 police. I loaned the old car to a friend once and he got arrested in it for 134 in a 55 zone. That's how fast that car was! Only got 11-14 mpg and needed the best premium gas you could buy but certainly was fun to drive. What was really cool was the look on other kids faces when this finned flyer tore past their fancy little small block Chevelles and Cudas. And the Fords? FORGET IT! Tore past them all, even the 390's. Ah the memories.
I like the 59 in your photo! Yes the 348 does have lots of power. More than the cars could handle I think. GM stated the 59 with the 348 would do 136 mph, with the tri-power and four speed. When I was young and crazy, I had my speedometer needle well beyond the 120 mph max it goes to. I think the needle hit the stop and was pointing almost straight down!
Nice Chevy. I´ve got my Chevy 59 Bel Air since 1990. It´s a great car and makes absolutely no trouble.
Greethings from Germany
One of these days I want to get a 1958 Cadillac El Dorado.
That is so cool. Same shift lever as my Apache
I had a '59 Impala 2dr Hdtp back in the early '60s. 283 w/ 3 on the column. Loved that car. Used to gather the wife and kids and go for a Sunday drive back then. (gas was 25 cents per gal.). Got 21 mpg on the highway. Would like to have seen some shots showing the driver's view over the hood while going down the road. Had a buddy with the 348 with tri-power (3 dueces) for carburetion. That thing would really fly. Cars were really exciting back then.
sweet ride.
What a lovely car and a very nice ride! I'd wished we had such cars here in Denmark, but there all long time rusted away!
My god, that car is beautiful!
Love your cars ! I have an old Mercury. Love the video of your old snowblower too. You have that running perfect. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing more work you do on your Pontiac. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too.
beatiful car.... ive got 65 c10 stepside straight 6 which has three on the tree kinda tricky at first but you feel pretty cool once you get the hang of it
Love it
Hey! Beautiful Car...I thought, hey, that looks like hwy.80 to Tybee Island...I've seen that road before...then I saw Fort Pulaski, took away any doubts! Beautiful car, beautiful drive/place, beautiful weather. What more could you ask for?
I agree with you on those keys,I have a set of keys from Dads 1960 Olds and those are tiny!! GM Your key to greater value.Neat insturment cluster!
Nice car, damn
Wow, you bought a working 1950's car for only $75! It's not only working, it's in pretty much perfect condition...
I quite like the video - this is what youtube's for. You showed exactly what it looks like and how it's like to drive this car. The Chevy Bel Air is one of my favourite cars.
He bought it in 1978 though..
A very great car, good job and respect.
Im a really chevy fan and the 60s was a wonderfull, i think it be better when i was born in the 40s than i can buy me a 59 chevy bel air how yours :D.
great 5*
What a lucky gentleman !!
Only $75, amazing car!!
Awesome Car Awesome Vid
VERY MINT! 5/5 Sir
Great car, i need a steering wheel like that for my 63 chevy c10.
beautiful...
beautiful impala!
Actually Bel Air
I grew up seeing this dashboard from the passenger side or backseat. Our '59 Impala 2dr had the 283 w/Power Glide Automatic.
I grew up behind the dash of a Green and White 59 Chevy Parkwood station wagon. It had a 283 with a Turboglide. I always rode in the rear passenger side. I have been looking for a solid Parkwood with a V-8 automatic to restore for years.
@@OldCarAlley That's cool, and certainly a great project if you can find such a rare wagon. I remember our Cub Scout Den Mother had that exact '59 Parkwood wagon, never rode in it but I was perplexed by the tail lights being the same shape but flatter than our Implala.
They also had a '57 Nomad and kept both vehicles shiny and clean. circa 1966 in Washington State
Nomad was green and the Parkwood wagon was white
nice car
Wow, only 18 MPG? That just about makes it even with today's full-sized Suburbans!
That's actually pretty good for back then. Plus until 1973 MPG wasn't that much of a concern.
Hello I just sub'ed to your channel. Looking forward to your videos.
At 4:33 you dont see dashboard gauges as good as that anymore.I had a 57 many years ago and It did not compare to your 59.Someday soon I will get a 59.Chevy did a great design that year.Instead of going straight up with the fins, they pointed them outward which gave the rear a distinct look with the tail lights. Many happy years with it.
I wanted to tear those dice off of that mirror! How could anyone stand them swinging around?
Window dice suck.Distracting.
Very nice . im a fan of column shift transmissions. essentially an H pattern turned sideways right?
I had a 59 convertable...283 with a 3 speed on the floor though...I gotta say I grew to hate that car...The front end would plow under in sharpe turns, and those damned wings would actually cause the rear end to get loose after 85 miles an hour...But you got a good looking car and ya have treated it well...nice job!..
Eh I mean it's not a hotrod for normal driving it's unlikely you will go over 85 MPH very often.
The 59 beats anything chip Foose designs
👍👍👍🚗
Probably the best investment he ever made. 10,000% return?
Never understood that three on thr tree set up
I don't need to choke or pump the pedal to start my '69 C-10 in warm weather.
Cool car.... nothing quite like an original car..... you can hot rod a car, give it an LS1 a corvette suspension all that good stuff, and it is cool no doubt but there still isn't anything like an original car....
Voodoo?
Did you paint it?
I repainted it in 1982, with single stage Acrylic Enamel.
@@OldCarAlley what color was it before you repaint it ?
@@Steve1766 Tuxedo Black and Snowcrest White.
it's a very nice car!!
see me in a chevy bel air 58 in my video
sorry for the sound, because it's a video taking with my cellular and sorry for my bad english i'm french
bye
Get rid of those swinging dice! How could anybody stand them?
i usually prefer manual but wow that would just confuse me and throw me off.....lol
How?
75$ or 7500 $ ???
Remember he said it was bought in 1978. The US Dollar was a lot more valuable then and also this car wasn't even 20 years old which meant it wasn't old enough to be collectible but old enough to not be worth too much. It would be the equivalent to buying a 1999 model car today.
ha, i mean bel-air..oops.
Prefiro o opala.
I will give your $75.00 back for it.
ah those dice are so stupid throw them out the window.
They have been hanging there 39 years now... so can't bring myself to remove them.
That would be littering. In poor taste.
These old cars are neat but man they ride like a skate board rough noisy windy everything rattling around vibrating and unreliable. Only good for a short drive on weekends for fun but I couldn't imagine having to drive this every day.
Surprisingly it rides very smooth, with no rattles. There is wind noise, but most of the time when I drive it, the windows are down anyway. It is very reliable. I drove it the 1000 miles from Michigan to Savannah, straight threw, only stopping for gas every 200 miles. It used NO oil.... and gave me NO trouble at all, and was getting 20 mpg with it. It's a fun car to drive. I like driving my old cars, better than the new cars! I drove it back to Michigan, when I move back, but took two days on the return trip.
They are neat and look cool but you cannot beat the comfort of a modern vehicle compared to these old ones my point was I would hate to have this as my main vehicle everyday
Why the hell not!? You younger ones are too used to creature comforts.
