@@kyudokaarchery6687 The other thing that determines the value of your hand is called Fu. It is primarily based on the triples you have in your hand and if your hand was opened or closed. Once you get to 5 Han (Mangan), Fu doesn't matter any more and the hand is scored using only your Han.
To calculate your Fu, you always start with 20 Fu. you get 10 Fu for a closed Ron, or 2 Fu for a Tsumo. You get 2 Fu per triplet in your hand, this is doubled if it is closed or a terminal of honor, and quadrupled if it is a Kan. So a closed Kan of white dragon would be worth 32 Fu. You also get 2 fu if you were waiting on 1 tile to win. For example you had a 1 and 3 waiting on a 2. Now you take the Fu and round up to the nearest 10.
There are a few exceptions with Fu. Seven pairs is always scored as 25 Fu. If you have Pinfu, then Tsumo is worth 0 Fu, but a Ron is still worth 10 Fu. If you don't have Pinfu the minimum Fu you can get is 30, so if you would have 20 Fu, it is upgraded to 30 Fu.
Your final score is your Fu times 2^(Han + 2), per person. This is doubled again if the dealer was involved. If the score is over 2000, then it is a Mangan. The score is rounded up to the nearest 100.

    A few tips:
    1. Been noticing most of your losses early on were because you discarded a non-terminal (terminal = 1s and 9s) suji tile. Those are usually the most unsafe tiles to discard since a lot of waits accept those tiles. Granted it might be worth the risk if you're tenpai with at least 4/5 han, but definitely tilting when you take the risk and get mangan'd or above.
    2. Generally you'd want to keep your hand closed to have the option to riichi an otherwise yakuless hand. Though in Bronze east room its a whole 'nother ball game with everyone and their mothers calling like they got unlimited calling.
    3. When someone riichi's, usually best to just fold your hand if you're too far away (3 or more from tenpai) from winning. Check discards, everything they discarded is safe, everything everyone else discards afterwards is safe.
Hopefully these help. There's also 5-block theory and tile efficiency, but I am not sure if you want to dive into that yet. Would definitely like to see mahjong game with the bois with maybe some gimmicks (e.g. naki mahjong where if you can call you have to make the call), or some viewer games. Also, sort of felt disappointed when the thumbnail had nine gates but no one got it :(.
Edit: Thanks to Szelto for correcting me on the suji defense.

    Hi Joey,
I like playing Mahjong and where I'm from, there's a traditional variation of this game in a different name.
From the way you played, it might be a good thing NOT to do pon or pung (3) or kong (4), because your opponent can read the remaining tiles as it's open up to anyone. So the less you show your tiles, the better it is (I think you get additional points for concealed tiles as well). A good strategy is to wait for the 4th tiles to drop on your turn unless you absolutely need the tile to richi or just one more before tsumo, then it might be worth it.
You absolutely don't want to steal too just for a chow unless your strategy just to confuse your opponent from the beginning - if you get a hunch he/she has a good hand

    • @kyudokaarchery6687
      @kyudokaarchery6687 Před 2 lety +2

you do generally get a higher score by concealing your hand but its not a bad strat to call tiles as long as you have a yaku. especially if you have 1 or 2+ more doras. also its not that good of an idea to wait till the 4th tile b/c that tile may never even come out for the rest of the round. ofc there are exceptions like if its a wind/dragon tile then its fine to wait for the 4th tile

Yakus are combos of sets and runs that count as "winning" hands. Those you just memorize, as far as I can tell. There's lists online.

Was there a stream I missed? This is the first time ever I’ve seen him play, and he doesn’t really seem that great. He certaintly understands the game better than most westerners (comes with the half-japanese I guess,) but I just can’t feel the skill in this video. I feel like the cuts in the edit don’t help, I didn’t get to hear a lot of his thought process.

He’s also not considering his discards and his opponents discards. he wouldn’t give so many rons up if he took more care in choosing what he was giving up.

Don't forget that Richi Mahjong (aka Japanese Mahjong) is about "not losing", rather than winning.
If you play close attention to your opponents you know which tiles are safe and which aren't, and only ttry to be bold and finish if you have a big hand or can get a very fast win.

thats pretty amazing, there was actually a game played by professionals a while back where everyone was blindfolded, they could only figure out the hand they had through the shape of the images and when their opponents voiced out what tile they discarded.
recently there was an akagi collab where you could make a tile you discarded dark(for a price) so that other players couldnt see, or another kind of game where your hand would be visible to opponents w/ certain tiles dark. was a fun collab

well for anyone who doesn't know yet, you see that A R C D on the most left side of screen? if u press C you can deny every chi/pon/kan automatically - you don't have to press skip button. While R button makes you automatically call the winning tile (if u one tile away from winning, in most case after calling riichi).
And personally, I don't recommend anyone to play Mahjong Soul on asia night time because many chinese player a.k.a beast wake up during that time and will slaughter your points to minus and beyond.
