Misconception about speech delay
Speech delay is an over-generalized term. What people mean is speech AND language delay. Most of the time, if a child cannot use words yet it’s considered a “language delay” because there’s a delay in learning to use language. Whereas, if your child cannot say certain sounds or has a lot of articulation errors - that should be considered a “Speech delay”.
Autism and red flags
Autism is scary. Many parents are incredibly afraid of the A-word. However, that should not be the thing that fuels your actions. Yes, there are a whole bunch of red flags and early signs of Autism. And when your child seems to be showing these signs, any parent would be fixated by that.
Eye contact and Responding to Name
Out of all the red flags, eye contact and whether the child responds to his/her name comes up all the time. Whilst these are obvious signs of Autism. Children who are NOT on the spectrum also can show these kinds of signs. Whether or not the child has Autism or not, we will only know after doing an assessment. And whether there is a diagnosis or not, we should always focus on teaching children to communicate with us. Teaching and clearing up the signs of Autism will not result in a different diagnosis.
Why hinting and repeating doesn’t work
What usually happens at home is that parents try their best to cue and prompt the child to speak. No matter how much the parent hints or repeats, the child just doesn’t want to speak. Usually, this would work for children who are not typically developing children, it would not work for delayed children. Why? Because if your child doesn’t know how to do something, it doesn’t matter how many times you repeat it. You haven’t provided an easier way for the child to communicate with you. So step back and learn how to accept communication efforts that are not related to speaking. Such as using gestures and sign language.

Hi, I’m in the states. We’re doing slp 3x a week my son is 20M. So can gestures and answering to name can be part of the language delay? Can you confirm I was confused there
If you mean the use of gestures and NOT answering to name can be part of language delay, then yes, that's correct. Please lemme know if you meant something else.
@@AgentsofSpeech I understand. I’m trying to figure out if my son is autisic or delayed. We have him set to be tested.
@@michaellacoopman2303 update us on how it goes
How about masks? Any issues so far with kids? I remember most students needing help those first years of school..properly pronouncing certain sounds... how do you do that with masks?
so far there's no data to back that up, however, there is research that shows children will learn language faster when they see their peers speak.
My nephew 4 yrs.. whenever i asking him his name he said no.. he knows whats his name..he only speaks 2 or 3 worda combine not complete sentence..
My 4 1/2 daughter is in ST (it’s been so many cancellations until we recently started with a new speech therapist) and she was recently tested for autism twice and they both said she is not on the spectrum. She’s verbal and able to verbally let us know what she wants/needs and she’s very smart and ahead of her preschool classmates. Her new ST thinks she’s on the spectrum despite her first test showing she isn’t which is why we had her tested again and they told us she isn’t. It’s so frustrating because she displays echolalia and scripting but the team her assessed her say they believe it’s because she’s starting to speak more and possibly scripting because she’s around new people like her new speech therapist. What’s your thought on this?
I don't have a thought on this because I haven't seen your child. Anyways, STs aren't supposed to comment on ASD ethically. They can suspect but you did already do the test. So I am not sure what she's doing...
My child no response but she taking your self like this colour name a,bc etc please help
I wanted to buy your online course but your payment by card does not accept my Paraguayan postal code....it is only 4 numbers here!! so i guess i cannot buy your videos...a pity your payment method isnt a bit more flexible !!!!

Do you work with young adults?
Haven't heard speech therapy described in this way yet! Thank you.
We do have some clients who are adults before
My boy was diagnosed with Virtual Autism, we exposed the boy to to much cartoons we actually thought were helping him by always giving him something that made him comfortable little did we know that this will lead to this, but we are working tirelessly to get him back on track..zero screen time and we have been seing steady improvements, i tell him eyes and he will look at me straight in the eyes, he is more social and playful with me. Slowly we will get there one day. He knows all the numbers all the letters all the colors, patiently waiting for him now to start communicating.
who made the diagnosis? that's not a real diagnosis... at least not yet
