the theme of the album released in 2019 (Map Of The Soul: Persona) was somewhat connected to the greek mythology. before the Dionysus performance itself every member had a solo performance with some of remixes of their biggest songs over their seven years, each member represent a god or goddess
    • V (Taehyung), No More Dream Remix (2013), Apollo, god of the sun
    • Jin, Danger Remix (2014). Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, or Ares, god of war. stage points to the battle of Troy and the Trojan Horse
    • Jimin, I Need U Remix (2015), Artemis, goddess of the moon and twin to Apollo (quick notice that in the last dubstep dance break Jimin's and V's dance on the table was mirrored)
    • Suga, Fire Remix (2016) Hephaestus, god of fire, or Hades, god of the underworld
    • Jungkook, Save Me Remix (2016), Poseidon, god of the sea
    • J-Hope, Fake Love Remix (2018), Zeus, god of lightning and thunder
    • RM, Dionysus (2019), Dionysus himself, god of wine and art, complete with thyrsus - wooden wand entwined with ivy and grape leaves, a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and pleasure/enjoyment in general, it's compared to a mic in the lyrics of the song. Dionysus is a God often called Eleutherios which means the liberator, because his wine, music and ecstatic dance freed his followers from self-consciousness and the restraints of society. As BTS compare alcohol (술 or sul) to the art (예술 or yesul) in the song, they are Dionysus of music industry, the gods of music and dance, who gift their listeners freedom, food for thought and a helping hand to be strong and be better
seven lights that were hanging down formed the Corona Borealis - the constellation that represents the crown of Ariadne, given to her before the marriage to Dionysus, made by the god Hephaestus

      Just a few humble add-ons...
The inflatable panthers are because this is what Dionysus was known to ride, his female followers carried baskets of abundence and his parties where everone was equal, kings and slaves alike, started with huge processions, hence the faceless men in brown. 💜

So I almost imagine that MMA had the epic 2018 set where BTS said “sure we will do 3 songs” and it was like 18 mins because they added so much to the performance and it was beyond amazing especially the Korean musical intro for Idol. So for 2019 when BTS was absolutely insane they said “let us do 5 songs this year” and this 37 minute insanity of an awards show performance was the result give BTS an inch they will run a mile because as you see they are always so damn extra (and no American award show comes close to Asian award shows). It’s a 4 hour broadcast but BTS was still a significant portion. Also during the show “poor” BTS won uhh everything (9 awards total I think, and all 4 grand prizes the first time any group swept the grand prizes for artist of the year, song, album etc) so they never got a chance to sit, just constantly having to go up and get awards 😂 AND Suga wrote & produced a song “We don’t talk together” for Heize that got performed by her and won in one of the few categories they werent nominated in, so BTS were highly cheering that. They also pay for their own sets and extras. They spent millions just to flex to the industry, to their peers, to the public, and most importantly to their fans “we are the kings, you looked down on us for years you treated us badly now look at the damn art we created the layers of symbolism in the staging and each representing a Greek god”. They ended with a song about getting drunk on the act of making art. That is the flex of all flexes that ever flexed. We love this performance so much.

The misogynistic accusations were misinterpretations or cultural differences, mostly. At least, to me. The main problem that people had with this song was the music video. The guys were very aggressive with the girl in the video, slamming her up against a locker and dragging her around by the wrist. However, that's not the guys. This was early enough in their career that they didn't have a lot of say, if any, over MV contents or choreo. It was popular in K-dramas at the time for males to treat females like that. Also, in the making of video for the MV shows Jin bowing and repeatedly apologizing to the actress once the cameras were off.
The other song was War of Hormone. It's basically teenaged boys discovering girls and their own hormones. The lyrics include comments about them liking certain clothing on women and a line about "Girls are equations and we just do/solve them." They meant that girls are puzzles for them to try and figure out but people took "do" as in sexually. People also had a problem with "Imma give it to you girl right now" and didn't seem to notice the earlier line that said "Tell me what you want right now." They're literally saying tell me what you want and I'll give it to you. Out of context, yeah, these things could be taken as misogynistic, but they really aren't. Especially compared to the crap that a lot of American artists have in their songs. Just my thoughts on the whole thing.

I remember actual Korean speakers trying to correct people on the mistranslated War of Hormone lyrics and they were largely ignored. People, I think, had very poor comprehension skills when it came to WoH. They also missed that they were making fun of themselves and that they even said "If she's not interested, let her go" (I'm paraphasing.) The controversy didn't even come until two years later... I'm all for calling out anyone doing something wrong but I'll always stand by the WoH stuff being ridiculous.

Man, I'm Army, 3 years ago, with my 54 years old, very proud to have another BTS admirer. I, like you, also never liked and listened to Pop's groups, maybe it's because there never was a BTS before, I just I liked bands, the best of the 80's. It was really cool to see you enjoying the music and saying that you were enjoying the rhythm, the performance. And you said that you are surprised and impressed with each of their videos, right, and because they are BTS , and proof of how hard and serious they work to offer the best of themselves to their fans. Take the song "Dynamite", at the time they were promoting each event was a unique performance, just like "Butter".
Continue on this journey exploring BTS, and fall more and more in love with each one of them, they have this inexplicable magic, the proof is from thousands of male fans who kind of awkwardly show their admiration for their bias, hahaha...thank you for the reaction.(To reassure you, you were right, the song "Mikrokosmos" was pre-recorded, after 3 songs in a row they needed a break, and you will understand later)

There was a not-so-subtle hidden message in their decision to include songs from their debut era in all of the performances at 2019 award shows. For example, in this one, Boy in Luv was pretty much the exact stage and choreography from their first tour, when nobody was taking them seriously. I feel like they were saying "See? This isn't a fluke. We have been good enough to take all the awards since the very beginning."

  • @erume5776

19:33 this is the gesture for their self introduction in the early days since they are Bulletproof Boyscouts. their first logo was a bulletproof vest, so the symbolics are all tied together. if you turn the fingers down though it can also be read as "7" :) there's actually a short video released of them watching their debut performance, it's "[BANGTAN BOMB] BTS reacts to BTS debut+5 Days - BTS (방탄소년단)", they talk on it there
for Boy With Luv performances specifically Jungkook in the center changes the gesture, so thumb, index and little finger are out kinda like a rock gesture, but in the sign language it means "i love you". he also often turns his head to the audience while showing it and blows a kiss or makes a cute face :)

you can say Persona is part of rap triptych: RM's Persona, Suga's Shadow and J-Hope's Ego. the three of them make intro, interlude and outro to the Carl Jung's Map of the soul psychological concept, that describes the psychics of a human. the process of exploring your real self is definately includes reflection on your past, right well for these three songs bts sampled their own tracks from the early years of their career. Persona samples Intro: Skool Luv Affair from the Skool Luv Affair album (2014), Shadow samples Intro: O!RUL8,2? from O!RUL8,2? album (2013), Ego samples Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool from 2 Cool 4 Skool album (2013)
i recommend you to listen to Persona, Shadow and Ego first (each has an mv, but Shadow mv is shortened comparing to the actual song, be aware) and then watch bookish theories explanations for each in order, it is really educational and interesting af! i won't explain further and spoil the sauce :)
p.s: dionysus is not a part of the triptych, but a part of the same album series, so bookish theories has an explanation video for it too. some of it touches on Jung's Map Of the Soul too, but since it was released before Shadow and Ego, it's better to watch explanation before shadow and ego too to follow the thought, i think. or after all three of them. it's just if you watch it first, you might get confused lol

7:00 the voice V was using is called growls I think it's the voice that rock&roll singers use . V uses all types of vocal ranges and sound effects in their discography . Back in the days in 2013 they used to give him one line only because they didn't know how to use his baritone voice but since 2014 (since war of hormones era) they knew how versatile taehyung's voice is and they started using it a lot as you can see ☺️

This one ended up being extra long, even for Korean standards. That year some companies boycotted the show. They have their reasons, and some of them are valid, but mostly they were salty that BTS was gonna win everything. They pulled their artists, some even after being confirmed. MMA didn’t back down tho, they were like eff it, I’ll give all my extra time to Big Hit. They divided it between their two acts. Mostly went to BTS, as we can see here, but that year’s TXT performance was extra long too (nowhere near as long as this one, but extra long in comparison).
It ended up being a huge flex because without many artists, they still sold out and had great viewing numbers.

It's even more emotional when you consider that it was the last song they managed to perform live before the pandemic hit and they couldn't meet their fans in person for years. The lyrics hit a little different remembering that it's one of the songs which carried through that whole thing.
So, you didn't ask and I'm not sure if other people in the comments have already said this, but the two young men who the camera cuts to at 13:48 are two members of another boy group that's under the same label as BTS. A lot of reactors tend to be really confused about that cut, and frankly I'm not sure why the camera person did it there except that they were clearly vibing to the song and enjoying it, but there you go. Their band name is TOMORROW X TOGETHER if you ever want yet another band to check out.
And I did get your Godfather reference. ^_^

I was hoping you would recognize a bit of N.O. during the dance break since you recently reacted to the mv but it did have a lot of edm going on so…forgiven 😂

this is the greatest performance by any artist in history!!! you are thinking about 'war of hormones', that is the song that took flack in it's day. bts says, they always get nervous, they worry if any given audience is going to like their performance. if you look down on the floor when they sing boy with love you will notice a large circle, this is the raised platform that they are on for 'microcosmos. the seven stars represents the 7 members of bts. i am glad you liked it. award shows do not have song translations. welcome to the world of bts.

This preformance usually does break ppl. There is even a storyline that went along with this preformance. Since the name of the song is "Dionysus," and he is the "God of Wine and Festivals." They decided to use that....in other words they were all Gods....here are who they were:
    1. Jin-Ares/Athena at first we thought Ares God of War, but it turns out that he was Athena Goddess of Justice
    2. Suga-Hephaetus (God of Fire)
    3. J-Hope-Zeus (God of Thunder)
    4. V-Apollo (God of the Sun)
    5. Jimin-Artemis (God of Moon, and Apollo's twin)
    6. JK-Poseidon (God of Water)
    7. RM-Dionysus (God of Wine and Festivals, he even had a thyrsus, his staff that helps with the harvest of the grapes.)
Even the lights that came down one by one as each one came out created a crown. A crown that was given to Dionysus's wife.
They were the only group that I know of that could pull this preformance off and look good doing it...the length of it...the details, the amount of ppl alone would cause another group to say....nope we're done....
And do you think this is the only preformance they have done...you should check out the preformance from the year before this one. On that preformance they actually spent a half a million of their own money to pull it off.
Lastly, imagine if they had done a preformance like this here at an American music show....I don't think the audience would know what to do...I mean they were blown away by their Grammy preformance and that was actually quite simple for the group.
I hope the info helps u out...sorry for the long post. But ARMY will be here to help...We Purple You....

    • @juneseghni
      @juneseghni Před 2 lety +9

@@brittanygidley1291 I am not sure how me giving an opinion gives anyone a bad look. You seem quite angry and upset, which I am not. I am just expressing something based on watching all reactors who do 2019 too early which is "wow, I don't know any of these lyrics, any of the context, any of the instrumentals "are those bts songs?".. and inevitably ending with some form of "I wish I had waited a bit"... so yeah, that's my opinion as the performance is so magical once you know what is going on... but no need to make it personal or attack me.

Yes Boy In Luv was seen as mysogynist because of they way they treated the girl during the mv (not so much the lyrics even though they did refer to her looks) Boy With Luv was played on the radio in the US but also it was part of the 2019 Billboard Awards so you might of heard it there. In 2018 they were sweating heavy after that Idol performance but you probably didn't see it with the resolution of that video. Because in the beginning they were known as Bulletproof Boy Scouts they ended most songs facing away from camera with the finger guns then the flack jacket logo would shoot out. It changed in 2018 with Boy W/Luv they went from guns to hearts. You crack me up. They wanted each to have a performance and even though it was "just business" it was in reference to Greek mythology not Italian. lol. Each one was given a snippet of a song for them to dance as they wished, the dancers went all out but the 3 that are not dancers were given cool visuals for their turn. In the end they will all have a huge workout so it works out for everyone. It was white tigers that are indeginous to Korea.
The last song is called Dionysus. This song like everything else they write is deep. (1) Dionysus was the god of fertility and wine, later considered a patron of the arts. He created wine and spread the art of viticulture. He had a dual nature; on one hand, he brought joy and divine ecstasy; or he would bring brutal and blinding rage, thus reflecting the dual nature of wine. (source: Greek Mythology) .
    (2) You will find “born again” and “born twice” throughout the lyrics. Dionysus is born twice: first from his mortal mother’s womb (technically from the charred remains of his mother) and then from Zeus’s thigh. It is said that he is born of fire and nursed by rain (after he’s born from Zeus’s thigh, he was taken to Silenus and the rain nymphs of Mount Nysa). He crosses the boundaries between humans and gods and between life and death, which is consistent with the whole theme of LOVE YOURSELF: (embracing) the coexistence of contrasting forces. (Source: Greek Gods and Goddesses).
As a final statement they are performers like no other. They are crazy good. and Yeah you would have missed so much if you were looking at subtitles.
