What I love about this song is that she’s not like “fuck off you ugly bitch” she’s recognising her beauty but also expressing her insecurity about how fragile love is. It’s a very tender song but a powerful exclamation of her emotions.

The vulnerability in this song is incomparable to anything. Dolly is just a magician.
Wonderful lyrics + melody. English is not my mother tongue (i am Austrian and we speak German), and whey i first heard this in my youth i almost started crying. It immediately provoced emotions, sympathy and empathy towards a FRAGILE woman addressing her competitor who threatens here love, life and family. She does not start a littigation or fight, she openly begs the competitresse not to take her man away although she could. Straight forward, open hearted and open minded. Trying to solve a looming problem and danger without escalation.
I think the best part of this song is how she doesn't blame Jolene for anything. It's not mad at her. She's like girl you are gorgeous you could have any man you want it's just that I only want this one. And you haven't flirted with him you're not trying to take him away but he's got this hang up on you and I'm just asking you politely to make sure he knows that you're not available. You should also hear the "Slow Ass Jolene" version that was used on the TV show "The Blacklist" a few years back. It is amazing how wonderful it sounds. It's a real shame that the vast majority have no idea of her talent as a songwriter and performer. When she was a rising star, the media did everything they could to belittle her. She was mocked and degraded because of the shape of her body. For every wonderful thing she did they found an equal number of ways to tear her down and portray her as nothing but a sex symbol. Disgusting. I hope she gets her true due someday.
