Thank you for the explanation. Makes me think of somebody learning to speak a foreign language. At first, each word is pronounced stiffly, and separate from the next. Then, once you get better, the word start flowing into each other, and you really can't tell where one finishes and the next starts.
Thank you for this wonderful lesson...
Thank you for the video Alison! Very helpful!! Hope you have a wonderful holiday! 🎄☃️😊❄️
Thank you! You too!
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor thank you! 😊
This was really interesting! I'm definitely saving this video. Just picked up a violin and have been watching some of your videos and plan on picking up your lessons!
Thank you for sharing your gift. I really enjoy watching your videos and try to learn from them. I started to try to learn to play violin a couple years ago and then chaos hit the world and could not find a teacher. Wanted to learn in person so I could make sure my technique was correct so I did not learn bad habits. I have been thinking about trying out your plan as I would like to get back to learning again.
Going back and forth between slurs and separate bowing can take some getting used to. But the lessons in your second book are a huge help in learning this skill.
One exercise I found helpful is to perform a scale with separate bowing between notes and then do the same scale using slurs. I do 10-sets of each type of bowing.
It can, but its a VERY good exercise to nail and master as you'll always be a more dexterous and technically accomplished player.
Its why I always include nasty little exercises in my books to trick you all, lol but ultimately, you'll be thanking me in time :)
Hi Alison - You’re among the best, and a cut above the rest. BTW: If I were able to play the violin as well as I play the diatonic harmonica, concertina, and Bb trumpet, with an equal amount of feeling, phrasing, vibrato, note-bending, and all that good stuff - I’d be a violin virtuoso. Unfortunately, my perspicacity for the violin, after 5 years of playing the violin, is limited to playing only in the first position, and within the first two octaves, and using a finger vibrato (which as you know is a fake vibrato).
Merry Christmas, and have a safe, happy, and prosperous new year. 😊🎄🎆🎁
Fabulous, Alison - Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too :)
Good job
Thanks for the video, it explained the differences well and will help me in my playing!
I was wondering- what piece were you playing?
The piece is called Barcarolle by Offenbach and the sheet music arrangement im playing is in lesson 18 from tutorial book 2: www.amsmusicshop.com/learn-to-play-the-violin-1/
The word that comes to my mind is "smoother".
Yes! Hope you are well Aaron!
Are you saying slurred or slowed?
slurred
What if the music doesn’t show the notes as slurred? Would you slur anyway?
Yes you can - usually the music will indicate, but, when it does not, I slur however i feel to be honest. As long as Im not changing the nature of the piece.
Its called artistic license.
Should slurred bowing be used for Legato and non-slurred for Staccato?
Yes - but not necessarily. You can still play and sound smoothly with separate bows.
Not much info on how you slur …spends the whole video …almost …demonstrating difference between the two
The in-depth info is in lesson 18 in book 2 from my '1-30 Violin Course' (linked under the video).
Slurring is the reason violinists can sound much better - and this is what Im showing you in this video.
the most crucial thing is left out. an explanation.🙄. i'm a beginner but found out from another channel that a slur is 2 or more notes played with the same bow direction
I'll do a much more in depth one in Jan for you all if you like :)
Thanks .. yes that makes sense David and ‘twould be great to see something in depth if you have the time Alison
Of course I have the time! If you want one, ill do it no problem. :)
