This song, and most other Wintersun songs, are why Kai Hahto has the nickname "The Human Metronome." He doesn't miss a single timing or beat with his kicks or his sticks... just consistent and smooth and also stupidly fast on the blasts
Rotten Sound was one of Kai's former bands. There are couple of drum cam videos of that era and they are a testimony of how fast Kai is.

Dude, I just had my head blown off my shoulders. This the first Wintersun song I ever heard. Man I have to catch up on these guys. Everyone in this group is EXTREMELY talented. Kai on drums is a machine. Good grief it's like he was on fast forward making sounds and beats coming out of those drums that were unearthly. Thank you so much for adding this to your list of reactions. I defiantly will listen to more Wintersun now.
This is part of a trio of songs recorded live at Sonic Pump. Check out Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow. You won't be disappointed. Their entire discography is amazing (if short).

The same here. I fell in love with this band since I saw them in CZcams. It was love at first sight. I could not believe what I was hearing.
I like Kai's style. He doesn't beat the drums to death, His light touch equals more speed. Really crisp. There's a lot of talent in this band.
Jukka Koskinen on bass is also now in Nightwish, having been announced as a permanent member last month.

Oooh... Try out Blind Guardian. Bet you haven't heard them either. They're like Nightwish -- long timers, sturdy as hell, Distinctive, HUGE following outside U.S., Sings in English, Impeccable. As a Nightwish fan I love Jukka on drums because he pounds the kit for accents and entertains more. Technically, I have to admit that Kai is a beasty metronome and his posture seems to be a lot healthier.

Kai needed to switch to alexander style of ergonomics as a solution to his back problems... and his posture allows him to play any genre of music at high level efficiency, hence his aim to play drums as long as he lives...
I can't believe I forgot to bring this up! I agree! The posture difference is quite noticeable. I must say sometimes after a few songs, I start to slouch a bit myself!! Thank you so much Sandra!

Wintersun is a great band and it speaks volumes that two members are now in Nightwish, the premiere Finnish metal band. If you want to hear a similar track from Nightwish, only much shorter, check out "Master Passion Greed": czcams.com/video/hBTRq2Kgt3Q/video.html
It has never been performed live as it was a cathartic exercise for the band following Tarja's departure, that doesn't need to be repeated. The song is aimed at her husband who the band blames for the breakup.
Jukka's double kick work is really worth the listen.
I said before Kai the human metronome! The only thing that moves is his arms and legs lol he is so great ! I seen Nightwish on May in Massachusetts for the first time it was simply amazing! 🤯🥁 unfortunately as Americans we don't get exposed to this great music .
I'm not a jealous person naturally but I just found Floor with Nightwish a few weeks ago and now I'm jealous of anyone who has seen them live recently or is about to soon.

Kai is jist a beast on drums, total machine, his timing is always flawless and his blastbeats are off the chart, the guitars are so heavy in places then beautiful and harmonious in others, Jukkas bass is always on point as well, They have produced a couple of these live in studio videos, also Kai has done a live drum playthrough elsewhere. Kai and Jukka are now also fulltime members of Nightwish and you need to see the Hellfest set
Kai has also some drumcam shots from his Wintersun performances if you want to watch just his drumming. He is awesome.

Kai has video of his drumming for this song also a very neat warm up video. For Nightwish's recent live concerts he added several toms to be able to play the drum solo/fill for Tribal. He is left-handed but uses a right-handed set up. He is a very respected drum tutor.

Indeed "Devil and the deep dark ocean" is a badass song from NW. Great you are interested in European bands. We have many awesome bands here. As a drummer, you will also LOVE the song Sancta Terra from Epica (Also Dutch female singer and 2 of Floor's former bandmembers) She sings with Floor, but you will love the drumming too.
The change up after the blast beats, Kai plays 3/4 over a 4/4 tempo (really amazing syncopation). His blast beats went over two minutes which is a workout for sure. Now Kai plays and the bass player Jukka play in Nightwish.

Legend says, that Tomas Haake (Meshuggah's drummer) himself called Kai a beast after watching that video. Some say, that even Tomas can't play it himself, and that Meshuggah haven't played that live. Unfotunately that video quality won't do justice for Kai. It would be awesome to see him playing it with a good sound, because that song is just sick on the drums.
So many great drum clinic and drumcam videos. For example Kai with Jaska Raatikainen from Children Of Bodom. Jaska has also been one of my favorite drummers since late 90's. Very creative and I always loved how well he fitted to COB.

It might not make a good video for the channel, but check out the album (and live videos) from the band Taphos from the Netherlands (album is "Come, Ethereal Somberness"). Drummer is insane.....dude never had access to a double kick pedal or something, because he plays double bass parts by doing a blast beat on his one kick and a floor tom. Crazy stuff.

I have always the best time when somebody as drummer tries this. Ofc with learning and doing map of it would help. I can play drums but luckily i don't need to do this.

Hey dude, I'm enjoying your reactions. The obvious next video to do from Wintersun is "Time" from the same Sonic Pump studio session. It's another long track with virtuoso guitar and bass playing and Kai working his ass off behind the kit. It has more of an anguished emotional vibe as opposed to the battle cry vibe of Sons of Winter and Stars, allowing Jari to use more of his vocal range. I personally think it's their best song, and an underappreciated metal classic really.

I get what you're saying about blast beats. There needs to be a certain amount of swing to it or else it sounds like a machine, in the bad way.
Also, if you really like cymbal accents, there is a band called Brymir that just released an album/single called "Voices In The Sky" and their drummer is a disciple of Kai Hahto. You should check that track out. The accents during the chorus will make your panties wet. Plus it's just a banger of a tune. It doesn't show the drummers full chops technically, but that's not what the song calls for. There are other Brymir tracks with blast beats and faster double bass but hey, gotta start somewhere and might as well hit what's fresh.

Definitely! What I should have said is I could probably play a few of the rolls/fills he plays but nothing about what he does is easy at all, even for experienced drummers! Just the endurance alone and the skill to stay on time throughout all of the transitions/tempo changes, while still keeping the writing interesting and unique is extremely impressive. A true master of his craft.

Anyway, I hope to learn at least something about the drums. During my Soviet childhood the only music, apart from choirs, was pop. Not bad, because songs had to be approved not only by the Communist party, but also by the conservatory, however... Then came the singing revolution and songs (songs got heavier), rock on bones disappeared - no need to record foreign music on x-ray pictures. And I finally found metal, our own Skyforger, though I did not paid much attention to the music, even in the performance of Kurbads (metal+national ballet troupe). And then I found Nightwish. By accident.
