      And in my opinion it is not that Bunny, or any dog or other animal learns to "speak", because they already have a very complex language (body/smell/voice) which we humans do not always get completely - it is finally a possibility for them to learn a "foreign language" to be able to communicate with us "dog-language-impaired" humans in our own, mostly abstract language. That animals usually don't use our language system doesn't mean they don't have complex thoughts.
      I am also impressed that Bunny already learns the time concept, using irregular verbs, which is sometimes even difficult for high school students who learn English as a foreign language... 🙂

      Devil's advocate; The dog may not cognitively understand what its doing. It may just be smart enough to know that certain button combinations produce reactions from the owners. For example, anything the owner views as correct will always get a good reaction and attention from them. So "i dog' "you friend" "I love you" will always be positive. The dog knows it can press those buttons for attention. While 'stranger, bird, or outside' will make the owner open the door and let the dog out. So it can press those buttons if that's what it wants. I'm not claiming this is what's going on. I have no idea to what degree this dog understands what its' doing. But I don't think we can claim we definitely know that it understands.

      There is a video in which Bunny says "Bunny cat" and Alexis corrects her and says: "No, Bunny dog."
      The amazing thing is the jump to the use of a personal pronoun by Bunny. She had been using "we" before and been experimenting with "I".
      The combination "I dog" basically shows us that she understands personal pronouns (the difference between "you", "I" and "we") and that she applies the concept "dog" to the entity that she herself calls "I" and Alexis calls "you".

    Bunny's "I dog, we friend" comment was not only touching, but really interesting. Obviously her self-awareness is shocking, and she is also categorizing the relationship. As humans who love our dogs and cats, we often think of ourselves as their parents, and them as our babies. Bunny knows the people who live with her are named Mom and Dad, but she doesn't know what those titles imply. The question in my mind is if Bunny thinks of her humans as a parent figures or as friends (nearly equal to herself). I know dogs are pack animals who will respect a hierarchy, and clearly Bunny does obey human commands most of the time. But that doesn't answer the question of how she views her Mom and Dad, as parent figures or more as colleagues who just happen to fill her food bowl and go on walks with her. It would be fascinating to find out.
    (And please don't misconstrue that to mean I think she doesn't love them, I think she clearly does!)

      @jaschabull2365 Před 3 lety +29

      I think the concept of dogs being naturally hierarchical turned out to actually be pretty overstated - wild wolf packs actually more often consist of nuclear families with a few adoptees, the early studies being based on packs cobbled together from several captive wolves. So it's thought that dogs respect their owners more in the manner of a child respecting their parent rather than a subordinate respecting their superior, especially seeing as dogs are in some ways neotenic versions of wolves (some traits displayed by adult dogs are only displayed in wolves as pups).
      You've definitely got a point though that to Bunny, "Mom" is probably just what she calls Alexis, and she probably doesn't know the connotations of that - whether she'll ever be able to actually describe her relationship with Alexis, and especially relate it to a human relationship, remains to be seen, especially considering anything she can feasibly say will have to be done with her relatively limited vocabulary.

    • @BuzzyStreet
      @BuzzyStreet Před 3 lety +24

      @@jaschabull2365 Your characterization of wolf packs is spot on. Earlier research was done on captive wolves forced into social groups with unfamiliar conspecifics. The unnatural situation created a great deal of stress and resulted in rigid displays of social dominance. Recent work shows wild pack hierarchy as flatter (more lateral), and generally much calmer.
      Dog packs, as they are construed in our imaginations, are hierarchal. In reality, dog packs rarely form at all. What is frequently assumed to be a dog "pack" is usually a loose group of dogs that forms around a common objective such as food scavenging and dissolves when the activity ends. Research on dog "pack behavior" at human garbage dumps in Italy details this very clearly.

      By now I am convinced she can generalize the concept. She can tell cats from dogs from birds.
      She correctly identified a neighbour's cat as "cat" and the cats in her household as "cat" too. She understands that both seagulls and crows (and airplanes ^ ^) are birds.
      She understands that there are other "stranger" dogs and that she is a dog.
      She even generalized other things, like both the waves and the rain and the ocean as "water", both her paws and the humans' hands as "paw" etc.
      Should be easy peasy for her to realize there is a category called "human" which consists of individuals like "Mom" and "Dad".

    This combined with yesterday's video of Bunny asking for another dog is pretty interesting. If Bunny gets those specific words the way we hope she understands them, she's developing and able to articulate the difference between dogs and humans, which is super interesting.
    I imagine most dogs can categorize like that easily, but seeing Bunny assign words to it is still exciting. Dog is a great addition to the buttons, whenever that happened. I wonder if you want to include a "human" button? Human feels like a weird specific choice of words, but "person" feels patronizing to the dog, so I don't know what good alternatives there would be.

Not only does this dog know that it is a dog and that it can be a part of something bigger (we friend), but also expresses that it is unique and knows what self is. @@bacicinvatteneaca I think that some of the difference can be down to the way their minds work. It was fascinating to me to find out that birds experience time differently then humans. Ever drive towards a bird in the road and it waits until what seems to us like the last minute. To them, they know exactly how long it will take them to move out of our way, thus to them, they are giving themselves lots of time. The assumption that we and animals experience the world the same is incorrect. Therefore, what seems slow to us in Billi's reaction may not seem slow to her. I don't know enough about the difference between the way humans and cats experience the world to be sure.

    When Bunny just, ever so casually, popped off with "I dog. We friend", I nearly fell out of my chair. This is beyond simple understanding of human/animal relationships, beyond understanding her place next to humans; hell...beyond simply grasping what she is in the world. Bunny, like it or not, is beginning to understand WHO she is, not WHAT she is. She may have four legs and fur, but she communicates with more skill and dexterity than many kids I've seen. This is a stunning achievement for any animal, but when you consider the fact that this animal has four legs and fur, it becomes all the more important. Bunny is, simply put, in a class by herself. I'd love to see her meet up with Billispeaks; those two might have a lot to talk about.
