  • Hi folks, this is number 4 - the one about my Gibson built Dobro Mod.27 Deluxe (1999) and my 2011 National Estralita Deluxe.
Both have a story which involves considerable corrective surgery at a relatively young age!

Love the Dobro with the Beard cone, absolutely Fab, my fingers are stiff these days so I'm looking at Epiphone Hound Dog style, lovely hearing you play these, Thanks.

Hi Thanks. Rather than the Huondog (with a cheap cone) have a look at the Gold Tone range.

You used miles instead of kilometers to explain where the store was. That made my heart so happy. Perhaps there is still hope. Smiles...

Look at my face - that is the face of a very OLD Brit! I was born and raised i the time of Inches, feet, yards and miles, and of ounces, pounds, hundredweights and tone, and pennies, shillings and pounds. I couldn't think in kilometres or kilos, or euros! (Although I am a European!)

Andy, I have been enjoying the stories on your stable of instruments. You have some real gems. Both of those resonators sound marvelous. Cheers from north Texas!

Thank you for this enlightening 😂informative video. I have been leaning towards a wood body, for the reasons that you mentioned (weight and volume). I was uncertain about which cone style would best suit my needs. As I no longer drive, due to my vision, I hope to get it right and get it once. My wife thinks that I need neither, but is willing to drive me around when I ask.

Resonators have piqued my interest some but I really should finish learning guitar before I start chasing shiny things over the hill again. You can hear the Dobro resonate when you are talking my banjo does the same thing. Makes it feel alive and that's what draws me to them. I have a newer gretsch archtop that is a 5 ply top and it's got a head cold. Love your stories and thanks for sharing your journey

Thanks, Andy. For some reason, I never found it easy to sing with one of those. A banjo might be a better weapon.

Hi Tex, with both instruments, they are in open tuning so when accompanying vocals there doesn't need to be much going on by the guitars or banjo. I'l admit that when I played Dobro I rarely played much apart from licks and breaks like this : czcams.com/video/K1LOR1u6Z98/video.html

Hi Andy. Nice pickin' there pard! They are both lovely, the second one sounds particularly sweet. I have a parlour sized, brass bodied "Republic, Duolian" which is made in China, then allegedly fine fettled in Texas. It is a round neck, with a slightly short scale. The action is fine and It does have a full size cone. It does not exactly sound "sweet" though...
I wonder if it would be worth upgrading the cone?
Edit: having said that, it's been in the case, untouched for about 3 years now, so I'd probably be better off cutting my losses and sticking it on eBay!

Hi Jon, I attended a small gathering of slidey bluesy folk before Christmas, and found myself sitting next to a gent who had a Michael Messer reso which was very full and loud. They are not that expensive compared to the ridiculous costs of Nationals here in the UK now. Might be worth checking out.

Hey Andy, I've a Dobro looks like yours but is a roundneck..but without all the fancy fret inlay..have you played much pedal steel??

    • @SillyMoustache

No, never played a pedal steel. Did some fronting of a Country band with one once - too loud man!

Beautiful guitar(s)! Just curious, do they play similarly to pedal steels, and have you ever tried or owned any?

    • @SillyMoustache

Hi, interesting question, but no, in no way! I have worked with steelies (i.e., the players) in country bands in the distant past but never tried to play one. With a Dobro, you make your licks and melodies out of the one tuning (GBDgbd) but with a pedal steel you retune all the time with foot and knee levers to change the tuning/chords, notes. Watch some steelies and see that their steel (i.e. the slide) will hardly move. I guess Dobro and pedal steel are alike in the way that a tank or heavy truck is like a bicycle! I have enough trouble using both hands let alone feet and knees as well! Thanks for your question - See these vids : (Dobro) by Laura a lady I've know for some time : czcams.com/video/jw1hpsQFsv0/video.html

Hi Andy what string brand and gauge do you use on the round neck resonator please

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  Před rokem +1

Hi, I don't use it often, and so don't change them often but looking at my strings log, I've mostly used old EJ17s plus a new .017on first. It currently has Darco nickels which will be replaced by EJ22s or similar as I'm currently exploring nickel strings generally . I tend to prefer old, used strings on it as they tend to feel a little smoother.
