S1 - Ep 295 - Humansdorp - The Gateway to the Kromme River Estuary!

  • As we embarked on our journey to Humansdorp, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with curiosity. We knew that Humansdorp was the gateway to the Kromme River estuary and the starting point of the famous Garden Route. We spent the night in Humansdorp at Protea Cottage which was fantastic. Due to loadshedding in Humansdorp, we opted to have dinner in Jeffreys Bay and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The next morning as we drove through the area where the old caravan park used to be, my heart sank at the sight before me. The once-beautiful holiday destination was now nothing more than a shell of its former self. It was utterly destroyed, and nothing remained of the once-functional municipal holiday destination. We continued on, and at the top of Main Street stood the Cultural Centre, a once-impressive eco-sustainable building that guarded over the town. It was supposed to exhibit traditional Khoisan art, but now all that remained was a ruin, a sad reminder of what once was. Despite this decay, the rest of the town was a sight to behold. Beautiful homes lined the long streets, and trees towered over us, offering shade and comfort as we explored. It was clear that the town took pride in its appearance, and every corner we turned held something new and exciting to discover. Overall, our travels to Humansdorp were a mix of emotions. We saw the destruction of what was once a thriving holiday destination, but we also witnessed the beauty and pride which remain in the town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #mosselbay

Hi you two! Sometimes the (dirty word) black-outs bring something nice! Such as an extra outing to feed your hunger. If your evening meal tasted as it looks, it must have been great.
Your stay over place at The Protea looks grand, to say the least. And waking up to blue skies and CUPPAS in the morning with friendly dogs saying goodbye!
Another town founded by the church 150+ years ago. And you even managed to find an old station again! The town is beautiful, despite some neglect. One should maybe expect that as industrialisation grows some aspects of town upkeep might go down. Only a thought. I love the variety of the trees along the streets and in the surrounds.
The hymn you played inside the big DRC was so well chosen, it really could not be more fitting or beautiful.
Thank you for this very interesting outing. I'm holding my breath until the next one.
    Keep safe!

Look, I can go on for hours about loadshedding, but I won't! 😡 Our meal was indeed fantastic and we enjoyed the outing to Jeffreys Bay! Our accommodation was great too and to have the two rescues keeping us company, was the cherry on top for my beloved wife, who has the biggest heart for animals. I had to drive around J-Bay finding dog food WITH gravy for them that night! 🥰🐶🐶 I hear what you're saying about the decay, but also feel that instead of destroying buildings and infrastruture, it could be repurposed. Also just a thought. 😊

Hi guys accommodation as usual top notch Well Justin you certainly have the load shedding sorted looked a nice restaurant and food I am a dog lover so lovely to be introduced to Mavis and Skinny and the house was the original farmhouse St Marks Church was great especially the stain glass windows and the beautiful timber roof rafters a nice story about the monument. I thought the high street looks thriving plenty of nice old buildings shame about the caravan park maybe someone will see the potential amazing cattle mural beautiful tree lined streets is charming they really make difference. DRF church I would never thought it was built in the 50s interesting history the inside was immaculate I noticed another minora next to the pulpit so you were quite right brilliant the cultural centre donated by the Australian people was sad to see it's decline. Those apple express tracks always seem to find you the station must have been a big place with those cylos at the back the old train carriages looked the worse for wear the old water mill must have been stunning in its times the town seemed vibrant. Thanks for more education about rural South Africa. Among video cheerio till the next one

Mavis and Skinny were two darlings and it's so great that they were rescued from the streets. They made our already-great accommodation even greater! 🐶🏠 The stained glass windows in the church were fantastic! Humansdorp is a buzzing town with clearly a lot of economic activity going on, it would just be awesome to see them maintain their facilities more. 🚙🤞🏻

Hello Dustbugs.. Yes that used to be the caravan park.. when I lived around there over 25 years ago, it was already becoming derelict.. as you drive in on the left hand side were little round chalets.. on the right was what I think the ablution block..but it was already very run down back then.. Hope you both well.. thank you for your wonderful travels..always interesting 🚗✨💖

When i was just a little girl Humansdorp was really tiny, there was a motel we used to stay on our way through to Plett and East London. There were so many trees around which were full of little blue monkeys. So in Humansdorp we do the loadshedding hop! Hop off to Jeffries for some hops, and back again, hoppy! Ooh ! The temptation to ring that bell! Mijn vingers jeukte! The church is beautiful and I love the war monument. Wow! The church is so peaceful inside. Love the woodwork and stained glass. The Dutch reformed church is lovely too. Oh good, you found the station! Always so sad that the trains no longer come thundering through. Looking forward to see where you go next.

I wish you found the NG moedergemeente kerk which, If you just drove on in the street where the caravan park is, you would have found it. That is a very unique, stunning church that I know you would have loved. I am shocked and saddened about the caravan park and the Bowls. Wow, the destruction of this once prosperous County is.... ‘Living the hoppy life’ klinkt origineel & lekker 🍻😋. Fijne weekend in Strand en see you tomorrow again 👋🚗

Hi Dustbugs, when I worked in this area I used to stay in a building opposite the station. This was a brick building especially built for me. The houses in the background of your video use to be for the station forman and a lady that used to clean the rest rooms in that area. One of my friends said I must inform you that the narrow gauge line branches off at Thornhill station and goes to Loerie, Gamtoos, Hankey and Patensie stations. Humansdorp has so good memories for me. I used to surf at Cape St. Frances close to the lighthouse. One day we went to the Hospital in Humansdorp; one of the nurses told me that they treated many surfer's from other countries for shark attacks. We, South Africans never experienced this problem... Maybe we had a different smell to the foreigners.
