    I wanna thank u Shane, after your video about switchbot I pulled the trigger and ordered hoobs. First days was super intimidating, but now i’ve exposed my 2 BroadLink via IFTTT in Homekit, and now I can turn off and on my TVs, change channels, volume and setting, turn on and change input on my Logitech z906, Xboxs and open my big gate and small gate on entrance. All is exposed in homekit so I can launch scenes vocally with HomePod or via automations: when I get home I can turn off my 2 Arlo Basestations for alarm, turn on lights and tv or music and open my gate, while I’m still parking my car. It’s so great to have all accessories in homekit! Thanks for the Hoobs suggestion!

    I love HOOBs. I run it on a Raspberry PI and PoE so I do not need the extra able to power the Pi. If you were going to buy a new RoomBa, what would you buy? I just brought in SmartThings into HOOBs. This allows me to have Z-Wave in HomeKit. I just programmed SmartThings water sensor into HomeKit. Awesome way to monitor laundry, dishwasher, and under the sink water links. I have all my lights one on and turn red when there is a link. Thanks again for a great video. I really appreciate them.

    Thanks for this video! I had been trying to connect the two prior to the HOOBS certified plugin and it was giving me trouble because I had a lower model Roomba so I gave up! Do you know of a way via shortcuts or IFTTT to have the Roomba start/give a push notification/some alert when the battery reaches 100%?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +1

      No, I'm not sure about a push notification but it may be possible with IFTTT. Technically, if you have it working in homekit like in the video, you could trigger home automations when the battery gets to 100%, like turn lights a different color or something like that. I haven't tried, but it should be possible since the battery level is exposed to homekit.

    Excellent video once again, Shane. Been eyeballing HOOBS for a while, for other accessories. Not much of a programmer and HomeBridge always intimidated me but this looks like it lightens the blow. Will this step by step tutorial work similar for installing other plug ins or is there a learning curve for each plug in? Want to pull the trigger but don’t need a $180 paperweight lol. Thanks.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Jonathan! I understand completely. Yea, since plugins are made and maintained but the homebridge community, they are not all created equal and they can vary. The 'hoobs certified' plugins are usually much easier to configure. Some are super easy and some require a bit more work, like this one. The good news is that Hoobs support is great and there is also a great online community to help get answers if needed.
      If homebridge has always been a little intimidating but you've wanted to try it out, this is a great option, as they make it much easier to get up and running. But I understand it's not cheap. If you have some accessories that you really want to integrate into homekit, do some online searches first (if you haven't already) and see if others have successfully done so using existing plugins out there.

    • @jonathanitin9065
      @jonathanitin9065 Před 4 lety

      Shane Whatley Thanks for that! The main thing I would love to integrate is my pool equipment. I have an Aqualink and sure enough someone created a plug in for that (“HomeBridge-AqualinkD”) but it’s not HOOBS certified. Might be worth the tinkering to create a pool time scene with HomeKit though.
      PS- Love how, over time, you dropped the “affordable” part from your introduction lolol. Thank again!

    Shane - thank you for the videos. I’ve just started turning my house into a smart home using Apple home kit. I brought myself a roomba 671 and unfortunately it doesn’t have smart mapping software so I have to put it in a room abs shut the doors rather than being able to send it to a room. With the Hoobs setup can you create your own smart maps to send the roomba to certain rooms? Also have you come across an automation whereby once the roomba has returned to the base station the burglar alarm is set? I want the vacuuming to be done last thing at night but at the moment I can’t go to sleep until it has finished because I need to set the alarm once it has finished!

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety

      Hey Ben, thanks for watching! Unfortunately, no hoobs won’t give you any capabilities that your roomba doesn’t already come with as far as I know.
      If you have a HomeKit alarm system, you can create an automation that says: when the roomba turns off, arm the security system. Hope this helps!

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +1

      No, the bridge brings native HomeKit support, so you wouldn’t need hoobs or homebridge if you had that.
      The plugin is if you just have the MyQ unit and not the bridge. It works great.

    • @tomwaid
      @tomwaid Před 4 lety

      Thanks, brother. As I understand when paired with the Bridge - there are limitations on automations for when you arrive home to have the door auto open. If I understand correctly - using Hoobs will eliminate that issue. Correct?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +1

      Thomas Waid yes and no. So I believe that since HomeKit will still see the MyQ accessory as a garage door, you will have the same issue regardless. This is a “safety” feature of HomeKit requiring user authentication for any “secure” devices such as locks or garage doors.
      I have used hoobs to create a dummy switch (using the dummy switch plugin) that is just a virtual switch that turns on when I arrive home. Then a separate automation that says “when this virtual switch turns on, open the garage door.” This will not require that user authentication. Hope that makes sense.

      I would think so. You might have to try different roomba plugins to find one that works. Maybe this one? www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-roomba

      Shane Whatley - That link says: homebridge-plugin for Roomba980(Roomba 900 Software Version 2.x). My Roomba has software version: 3.x (3.4.62 to be exact). My vacuum has not received any 2.x updates. Maybe another plug-in in required for these versions..

      As long as there is a working homebridge/hoobs plugin available for your vacuum it should work. Here is one I found for Roborock: plugins.hoobs.org/plugin/homebridge-xiaomi-roborock-vacuum

      You should be able to get your i7 iRobot working with hoobs, I’m pretty sure using this method. Should be able to use either the same plugin I used or the iRobot-roomba plugin.

    Very cool Shane.
    I wish I thought my Roomba was a decent product. Unfortunately, I kinda think it was a waste of money. Literally, I have not once been able to get it to run an entire cycle without it getting stuck somewhere.
    But...
    Maybe Hoobs needs to hook you up with some stuff for a Giveaway. That would be cool.
    Thanks for the upload. Always good content you send us.

      Sorry to hear that. Yea, it seems that the reliability of the robot vacuums very much depends on one's furniture and home layout. People seem to either love or hate them. Personally I love mine (obviously). It has been great to clean our hardwoods getting up dog hair, preventing us from having to sweep manually every day. Thanks for watching!!

    Question: does Hoobs support Chinese brands like Tuya (Smart Life) and its subsidiaries? there are a lot of cheap and useful Tuya brand here in Indonesia and I'd love to make them work with HomeKit. They support IFTTT though, so It might not be a big problem if Hoobs doesn't support it.
    Btw, it seems that I cannot find Hoobs distributor here in Indonesia.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety

      Hey Ricky, I'm not sure about Tuya specifically. Hoobs runs using plugins that were made and maintained by independent developers from the Homebridge community. So you can search online for specific homebridge plugins to see what is available. There does appear to be one available after a quick search: www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-tuya-web
      Also, there is an IFTTT plugin that works (I made a video using this recently with switchbots) so yes, that is always an option too.
      I'm not sure about any distributers. The only place I know of to purchase hoobs is from them directly.

      @@bbllaakkee Not that I recall. Sounds like it might be an issue with the plugin if you're not seeing any issues with anything else. I'd reach out to hoobs support and see what they suggest. They are usually quite responsive and helpful.

    So, basically, Hoobs is a paid version of a free HomeBridge application for those who is not capable of installing HomeBridge. Nice to know that those people are also covered. I might recommend it to some of my friends if they ask me for help with the HomeBridge install.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety

      Essentially yes, well sort of. Hoobs is actually a different interface also with "certified" plugins available. You can actually download hoobs for free also if you want to install it on your own raspberry pi (or whatever you use). But yea, hoobs and homebridge essentially do the same thing and run off homebridge plugins. The Hoobs in a box kit is the plug-in-play, super easy solution for anyone who'd rather pay for it than tinker and install hoobs or homebridge themselves.
