This is a good example of how to respectfully criticize a popular game. While this doesn't stop me from enjoying the game, you make some valid points, and it always bothered me how they treated their powerups. The Fire Flower became a temporary powerup and was rarely used as an actual weapon (most notable example I can think of where they actually let you use it to fight instead of clear obstacles was the Squizzard battle in the second game, which I loved) and the Boo Mushroom barely existed at all. The Red Star is probably the worst offender for me, because it only appears in the place you first see it, and then the hub world. You never get to test out this cool powerup in a high-stakes environment.

Will watch the video today but my thoughts on this:
Mario galaxy would have done better without powerups at all, though I did enjoy the red star in the hub world, flight mechanics aren't exactly what I played the game for.
      Exception being the ice flower.
Okay okay. Actually them being permanent would have been better.
Now I'm definitely gonna watch the video later

I always thought that the star bits were introduced because at the time that Galaxy/the Wii came out, they wanted to take advantage of the motion controls (which were a huge selling point for the Wii, especially to people who might not normally play video games or buy a console). Instead of sitting stationary, on your couch, only moving your thumbs, you were (probably) gesturing at your tv with the wiimote to collect or aim and shoot them. Rather than getting really innovative with story structure or environments, or using the motion controls in a really creative way- we got star bits.

yes barry YES. ive been waiting for how about this game for EEEEEEVER and you did mario galaxy and FINALLY someone is picking up on something ive felt about it ever since i saw the game. personally my main issue with galaxy and i very much also feel very forgettable about it, is the entire games lack of character when compared to previous 3d mario games. character is a hard thing to measure i know but i think at its core 64 and sunshine had worlds that were so distinct from each other but also reflective of something the viewer can understand and image that those levels stick with them, even older mario games had that, i think the best of which being mario 2 at highly distinct and varied world design followed closely by mario world. galaxy is a bunch of space that looks slightly different at times where you really dont know what significance any of it has to anything else other than sometimes theres an associated theme to them which rarely works with the whole "space" idea. you neither feel like a space explorer or a land visitor, but more like a plumber hopping around chunks of matter in a mostly empty world which are surprisingly full of life yet also very underwelmingly shallow.

I've gotta respectfully disagree, Barry, but I love your insight! It's fascinating to see how others approach and categorize the same traits of a game like this. Super Mario Galaxy is still my all-time favorite title, so I'm clearly biased. ;) The fact that the game would constantly introduce new mechanics and drop them 10 minutes later made me feel like it was brimming with content, and that the whole game was a giant playground with hundreds of toys. One of my favorite aspects of SMG.
Regarding your point at 14:50, I guess I don't see the benefit of the cohesion that you're advocating for. It doesn't really matter to me in the slightest if each star is related to each other in theme/aesthetic as long as each level is fun. Would love to have other opinions on this, though!
Finally, I much prefer Galaxy's gameplay to Mario 64 or Sunshine _because_ of its linearity. I'd argue that your points #1 and #4 are the same - and I prefer this hybrid course clear/exploration because it gives you the freedom to run around little sandbox environments, but it never feels aimless - there is always a clear direction of progress to look forward to once you've had your fill of picking off enemies and looking for secrets. However, I have to acknowledge this is _super_ objective. I _prefer_ games which have a more linear structure because I want to be given a clear goal and properly execute to reach that goal - but typical course-clear Mario games don't give you that sense of micro-exploration that Galaxy nails. All that is to say, different strokes! Thanks for a great commentary.

I think I'm gonna have to disagree with your disagreement.
The linearity/open-world hybrid that you like in Galaxy feels more like a chore to me, not unlike how Arin feels about Ocarina of time: I know that where I'm supposed to go exists on a different planet, but I'm not allowed to get there unless I do something that I don't really care about because it's not the goal. Add to the fact that the planet of the objective I don't care about involves me finding said objective or getting a thing that's the key to the twice-told objective because it's a semi-sandbox, and it ends up being not fun. Maybe not boring, but definitely not fun to me.

Whereas, Arin tends to be purposefully over-dramatic and straight to the point because that's the character that he's created for that series and that's how he chooses to make his jokes. This is a complete and utter lie, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 use far more assets than Odyssey simply because the Galaxy games have far more aesthetic variety than Odyssey does, and the vast majority of levels have multiple traversable surfaces that are single-use models in and off themselves due to the gravity concept, instead of just a square piece of flat land like in Odyssey.
I like Odyssey, but I'm not about to act like it didn't happen to have a super short development time because Nintendo got really lazy with the aesthetics this time around.
Seriously, while Galaxy gives us Good Egg, Honey Hive, Loopdeeloop, Flipswitch, Robot Reactor and Sweet Sweet Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 gives us Sky Station, Yoshi Star, Spin Dig, Fluffy Bluff, Flip-Swap, Rightside Down and Fiery Flotilla, Odyssey just gives us Tostarena or New Donk City in more or less the same timeframe.
Yeah, there's far more to do in the Odyssey kingdoms than in the galaxies of Galaxy and Galaxy 2, but they use more or less the same amount of assets as one or two galaxies and, while Odyssey only provides 15 distinct environments (17 worlds, but the three moon worlds all use the same assets), the two Galaxy games provde over 90 galaxies, which is an average of 45 galaxies per game, and even if you cut them by half due to their relatively smaller size (Even though most galaxies are not that much smaller than even the larget Kingdoms) there's still quite a bit more stuff going on on the Galaxy games than in Odyssey.
Odyssey is a decent game with a fair bit to its favor, I don't understand why you people feel the need to put Galaxy down in order to make yourselves feel better about your preference for Odyssey.

I'm actually very impressed with this video.
Super Mario Galaxy was one of the first video games I ever played (and I never cleared it because my parents thought I was playing too much, so they confiscated all of my *seven* video games). I was a nine-year-old whose birthday gift from a friend living on a different continent was this cool new toy to play with, OF COURSE I was going to remember it well. Star bunnies, Yoshi, the amaaaaazing music (still playing it on the piano, almost ten years later), and the sole friend I had at school who played with me for hours. (Aspergers side note: we created our own language based on the "Lah" sounds that the boo[s] make[s] and it was insanely fun.)
But even with that nostalgia wave, I can totally agree with almost everything you said. For me, Super Mario Galaxy and Pokémon X were practically the same experience. I loved it because I had no idea what I was doing, and I had to experiment. I didn't know how to use a joystick controller, I wasn't able to play around for long periods of time so I had to make the most of everything. There were days when my entire thirty-minute "Wii time" was spent listening to Gusty Garden Galaxy's music and not moving. But obviously, the more experienced players find holes and nitpicks and everything under the sun because they have expectations from, guess what, prior experience (experienced players are experienced; I know, right). I had none of that, and so I would never have come up with any of this video because it just would never have occurred to me.
You made me think, and I find that to be refreshing. Thank you.

I get what you're saying, but I'm slightly in love with how unused and experimental the games properly feel. Sure, it's sad that cheep cheeps only appear as an enemy in one level, but then it makes playing that level much more fun, and helps it stand out. I guess I'm more in love with how much of an unexplored, blank canvas it feels like. New levels mean new environments, enemies, objectives, gauntlets, and each one feels unique and exciting. The secrets help fill out the same levels with new things, and I just adore Mario Galaxy and all of it's charm.

    @Omen_Burrito Před 3 lety +6

i think the "lack of place" as you put it is an amazing aspect because half of enjoying the game is just appreciating the visuals and the sort of whimsical swept off your feet sort of feel. youre being taken on the adventure and you have little control over it. it feels like a real experience where youre sort of at the mercy of whatever the game experience throws at you next. youre more of a helpless person just along for the ride as you enjoy the creative beauty of all the map designs in this crazy space-universe experience. theres an overabundance of new mechanics and powerups that help add depth to this large universe and it makes it feel diverse and less like something you end up familiar with. the lack of familiarity really makes this game as opposed to breaking it. its a real journey, because in a real journey, there is no consistency, theres some really easy moments, and some really hard ones, some really exciting moments, and some boring ones. you never really know whats going to happen or how youre going to hold up against it.

You summed up everything teenage me couldn't quite put my finger on. While everyone else was praising both games, I simply couldn't finish them. I tried and I wasn't (what I was otherwise entirely capable of doing) trying to be edgy or controversial, I was legitimately disappointed and didn't know why exactly. As a teen with no money, depending mostly on games as gifts, it was rare of me to simply not finish a game that wasn't too difficult. It felt like a game for the most extreme cases of ADHD, literally shooting you around and offering you instant gratification, but never really challenging you or rewarding you. I wanted to like these games, I saw the potential, and just like you said, the sandboxier-looking areas had my hopes up, but then that all fell flat. I'm glad Nintendo finally "gets it" and has the technology to push true sandbox games out, or at least it's getting better. I'd love you to look at Breath of the Wild next, because there's no doubt it was a good game, but it had a lot of faults. It was first the most exciting game I played in a long time, and then gradually duller and duller as it gave me nothing new.

I just never got that feeling of 'WOW THIS IS AMAZING!' It was always 'wow, that was neat yet kinda pointless. At least it looked and sounded nice's.
There's just no real urgency yet no real reason to actually explore either. No way to really optimize or strategize a run of a level. It's just a whole lot of surface level thrills and nothing much more.

Letting the player dictate where they go next and explore to would give the space setting and the camera controls a new sense of purpose. Allowing the player to look to the distance and plot a course to get to somewhere cool and interesting would make me feel the space setting wasn't wasted. And then the randomness would genuinely feel intriguing and rewarding rather than a little pointless.
Both games frel like a guided tour where it's intent is to elicit that "wow" feeling then drop the idea to move on to something completely different different without letting anything really sink in to much. I disagree with the notion that Galaxy 1 lacks cohesion (though 2 definitely does). The vast majority of galaxies do expand on the unique mechanic for said galaxy. For example, Gusty Garden requires you to use the flower things with more and more precision, and you need to collect a sequence of ?-coins for the secret star. Freezeflame is another galaxy you mentioned, and it's one of the best in this regard, in that the first level it teaches you how to skate and use the Ice Flower, which you need to complete the level. The second teaches you to light braziers with the Fire Flower, which you need to complete the level, and the third uses both at the same time. There's also a comet that needs you to perfect your skating.
You also seem to dislike the lack of freedom and predictability in this game, but I feel like that's part of the flavour. Mario is being thrown into this new universe and has no idea what's going on, but he goes along with these weird people to save Peach and just hopes for the best. Everything is very strange and sudden to him, so why shouldn't it be so for the player?
Anyway, this is just my opinion, and I'm also clearly biased as this was the first Mario game I played for any extended amount of time (though I got a fair bit into the original Super Mario Bros as well).
Oh, and the second game is far worse IMO, being super easy to beat, but a really annoying grind to 100%, and it lacks so much of the mysterious and magical flavour the first game had. Also, fuck that monkey.

@@Jack-xy8ij Odyssey has it's own problems.
Mainly just that moons don't really feel that great to get.
Platforming is fun but some moons are just handed to you on a silver platter which really makes the hard earned ones for less enjoyable.
Also little reward for getting extra moons besides seeing your balloon get bigger. You only need like 1/8 of the total moon count to actually beat the game.
Speaking of the rewards you only get 1 more level to play after getting 500 stars as opposed to 250 and then after that there's nothing.
300+ more moons to get and no extra levels for it or anything.

So, are you taking up the mantle for Sequelitis, Barry? Hope you keep these going, this is all very important and necessary criticism for game designers. Personally, I didn't play Galaxy long enough to experience these flaws... I couldn't take the constant upside down inverted gravity nonsense or the Remote/Nunchuk control scheme (frankly, I thought they were wretched controls for every key Nintendo franchise). This was also that whole time period of Nintendo making 1-Up's completely meaningless across the board for Mario games. To say that New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS was liberal with extra lives is an understatement, it was flat out insulting.

More than 3 years later, and this video is still great. I REALLY love the idea of being able to have actual flight at all times. My personal idea would be that warp stars give you flight and you have to personally fly to other warp stars. I say "other warp stars" because for obstacle courses to be freely accessible, you'd need to prevent the play from just...choosing point B. It could also be a mix, with more open areas being more freely accessed (you can pick any point), but more obstacle-oriented places being not-so-freely accessed. Either method words, frankly.
You do bring up great points. Mario Galaxy could have potentially not only retained its quirky mechanics, but even been a de-facto Odyssey or 64-style game...with all the stuff we love about the game we got. And that just sounds amazing.
I'd also like to take back what I said about remembering stuff like 64s level design more than Galaxy's.
...We remember 64 more because: 1. Whether we realize it or not, it's incredibly prominent just outside of actually playing the game. Mario parodies, Mario machinimas, fucking SMG4 getting a shit ton of views, etc. But... 2. You had to replay these levels AT LEAST 7 different times. That's a lot of times to get very comfy with these levels where you can get a front view of most of the level half the time. That's not including if you die and get kicked out.
So with those 2 points in mind, that's one reason that Sunshine or 64 can be more easily remembered. Because you could always get to a point where you have *in image of the entire level right in front of you.* And you had that far more than in Galaxy.

    1. It absolutely knows what kind of Mario game it is. It's somewhere inbetween the course clear games and the exploration games. It features tightly designed levels that still leave room for exploration and secrets.
    2. See above point
    3. It absolutely does love its own Ideas, it just doesn't beat the Ideas into the ground (Odyssey). It simply knows when its ideas are no longer interesting.
    4. I think Mario games should be linear... as much as I might find Mario 64 fun, the fact of the matter is Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are pure joy the whole way through, Every single star is a blast to get, the tightly designed levels are a blessing not a curse (inertia or not).
I do however think 3D world is too linear in that it fails to take advantage of the 3d world in meaningful ways, while Galaxy does.
Side point I agree that 1 ups are a worthless reward, but they're far more interesting than getting a star or moon for every single thing you do. I prefer Odysseys system of just making you lose 10 coins.
Odyssey doesn't have enough meaningful challenges to find and do. Perhaps I just missed them because I lost interest in the game after getting enough moons to do the Darkest side of the moon.
Most of the moons revolve around redoing the same thing you did in the last world in a different environment with no obstacles to speak of. If Galaxy is a game that doesn't use it's ideas enough Odyssey is a game that beats those ideas into the ground until any of the joy you got from doing them is completely destroyed... I think that this isn't a right or wrong situation as far as "is the game good".
Instead some of us like myself enjoy things more how, in this case, Barry would have liked the game to be.
While many people, in this case the majority it seems, would disagree and enjoy the game how it is. (Along with a sprinkle of people in between)
I don't think anyone will ever make a game that is truly unanimously declared as good, and more importantly, that is okay because of how different each of us is.
As a side note though, I believe deconstructing games like this is extremely important for making design improvements and figuring out how to make various aspects work better for all preferences.

  • @denischen8196
    @denischen8196 Před 4 lety +2

This is my opinion on Super Mario Galaxy 2. Get ready to read.
The mixture of linearity and sandbox exploration makes the game better than purely course clear or sandbox games. Course clear games makes the game feel like a gauntlet that solely serves to test ones skill. Sandbox games can make the player get lost both physically and in the clutter of mechanics thrown out when exploring too far. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 get the best of both worlds using smaller planets that function as rooms in a Zelda dungeon and a large one that functions like a mini Odyssey Kingdom.
Super Mario Galaxy utilizes the element of surprise. You don't know where the Launch Star or pipe will lead until you try. You never know what a switch or ? coin will do until you interact with it. You never know how to get to another planet until you explore it, solve its puzzle, or come back in another mission.
I agree that Super Mario Galaxy has a large amount of ideas that are not elaborated further. If all those ideas are elaborated on, there would be at least 2 to 3 times as many galaxies in the game. This is what got me interested in Whitehole, where I can make my own levels putting as much of the unused potential to use. Completing Super Mario Galaxy 2 feels like finishing Super Mario Maker 2's Story Mode before going to the editor for the first time.
I like the idea of planet loops and choosing between 2 Launch Stars, but I strongly disagree with free flying. Free flying takes away too many restrictions and can be time consuming and hard to control. Launch Stars are a lot less boring as travel is fast enough without the need to control. In addition, they keep the player engaged as they give star bit opportunities and a birds eye view of the stage.
Introduction cutscenes give a birds eye preview of the galaxy without giving away too much to spoil it. The star can be seen in plain sight indicated by shining light. The path to get there is not shown as the journey is the reward. In fact during my first playthrough, a Launch Star is a far greater reward than a power star or grand star. A Launch Star means there are more interesting places to explore, while a power star means saying goodbye to the mission and being one step closer to the journey's end.
Star bits are a much greater reward than 1 up mushrooms because star bit patterns serve an artistic purpose instead of just increasing the life counter, and using a pointer to collect them is more satisfying than grabbing a single item.
It would be perfectly fine if lives and game overs are completely removed from the game, and dying takes away star bits instead. My suggestion for the next Super Mario Galaxy game is to replace 1up mushrooms with Green Stars that function as a hidden collectible like they do in Super Mario 3D World. They should be hidden throughout each level available at the start of the game and not kick the player out of the level.

You might not've been the target audience for it. I think it was aimed more at kids or pairs of different skillsets - my little sister used to like having a try at Galaxy when she was 8 and I was 18, but overall she found it harder than she had the patience for (especially considering she only got to play it when I visited with my Wii - she didn't have her own console to play it over and over again for hours like most of us who grew up on hard 8-bit games etc did). However she LOVED playing 2P with me. If she was P2, she'd enjoy aiding my skillful playing, and if I was P2 (which happened more often), my assistance in holding enemies still for her etc helped tone down the difficulty for her. Granted, all of the above was way more fun and involving in Galaxy 2 where they actually contextualised Player 2's actions (and expanded them) via the Luma helper as an actual "controllable" character. Galaxy 1's co-op feels like a tech demo for Galaxy 2's in retrospect now.
Of course I appreciate that what people wanted out of co-op 3D Mario was what we finally got in 3D World, so no asymetrical co-op mode could ever live up to that idea. As such I don't blame people for hating on Galaxy's co-op.

Especially, with those goombas following you around. Man, I used to hate 'em. They helped with collecting coins, star bits, and 1-Up/Life Mushrooms. Even in hard-to-reach places. Star bits were useful for the Luma Shop, or the Secret Levels with the pink, Hungry Lumas. Overall, the multiplayer function on both Galaxies were useful, just in my opinion.

Or, more properly, momentum... but Barry should've used momentum to describe the desire to go fast in course clear Mario games, and inertia as the opposite of it... but, technically, momentum IS inertia... inertia is just the tendency of an object to keep the velocity it currently has, so, if it's in motion (running through the level) it will want to keep that, and, if it's at rest ('out-ertia') it will want to stay there.

And you’re allowed to think that! Barry isn’t saying that this is the way things should be, it’s his opinions in how he wishes the game was is all

You bring up a lot of excellent points here!
I'll say that the intros to the levels are more or less serving as the incentive to move forward, as they showcase a specific part of the level you'll explore, without giving away too much of the experience leading up to that. For example, typical boss fights aren't normally noticeable in a blind playthrough, as there's little indication of there being a boss at the end besides a shine effect to pinpoint the end of the level; they can come as a surprise.
As for the garbage game? Yeah, that can go burn in the fiery pits of hell. As can Spring Mario's controls.
Speaking of power-ups, I agree that they're underutilized, which is a shame. A lot of neat ideas that could've had more use just... wasted.
Some would argue that placing someone in an unfamilar situation can help with the immersion, as planets should logically have different atmospheres about them and "inhabitants" if we wanna take enemy placement as an example.
I won't argue that there does seem to be a good amount of missed oppurtunity in terms of creative ideas, but what it has is still an incredibly solid game for me. A good, enjoyable experience with Rosalina and the Lumas, a rockin' orchestral theme for practically every piece, and some of the more unique bosses in the series that played on the full capabilities and functionality of the Spin Attack, as well as some utilising Ground Pounds or a special mechanic thematic to the level for taking a boss down.
Galaxy 2 did even more to add to the experience, albeit with a less memorable cast (although what we got was still good). Oh, and the intro wasn't as great as Galaxy's, but that's also okay.

there's something about that petty real at the end that feels so good
going from a professional tone with your boss to shooting the shit with your friends, nice

Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemubwem Ossas I agree on that to a certain extent. Galaxy 2 did indeed improve on a bunch of things that Galaxy 1 either didn't have or was broken at the time. However, Galaxy 2 feels like DLC for Galaxy 1. Especially, because of how short the game was compared to Galaxy 1. Galaxy 2 did have Yoshi tho.

Dope Fiend Productions That's right, sometimes when i play Galaxy 2 i feel like it's the same game but with different levels, but i actually don't care if a sequel runs in a similar or in the same engine than the first game, since that's not something i think about while playing a game
