It also made legends out of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose. Please there Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, which became a fixture for the next decade or so. It was insane how the film went both over budget and schedule, everyone thought it would fail, but the film got acclaimed, became the highest grossing film of all time for 12 years, and won Oscars including Best Picture

The utmost sad thing is this movie would be made completely in CGI these days and no dedication to the craft of real movie making would be seen. It would be an animated movie practically, like Marvel. Which is fine for superhero movies but not an intense drama like this!
Its impossible to make this movie today. This seems to have been the most insane production of any movie ever.
_Titanic_ is easily dismissed today but it's a minor miracle of a film - so easily could've been a screaming disaster. That Cameron successfully captured those indescribable, mythic elements that made the sinking so fascinating is a miracle in itself.
And the film paid huge respect to those that perished, so easily could have this film become a sham in the wrong hands.

To be fair, that and building only one side likely cut the cost right in half. And it's just enough to not even be noticeable.
Going into this movie back in 2017, I initially “I’m not a fan of romance movies. I think this will be just an overlong melodramatic historic movie.” But then I watched it and when the credits rolled, I was taken aback by how amazing the film really was. I watched it with my mum and she was sobbing when Jack died. So was I admittedly.
After that, I became so fascinated by the wreck and history of the Titanic.
I shouldn't like this movie... But I do! It's epic in a way endgame will never be

While there’s romance, it’s not really a romance story. It’s a tragic story bout what it took for one woman to gain her freedom while over a thousand others lost their lives. I wish that movies (and books) weren’t effectively ”demoted” just for having any romance elements.
I remember the week this movie came out, my son had just been born. I also remember the media said that Cameron would never work a day in Hollywood again because he went so over budget. I was so freaked out by this smear of Cameron‘s character, I went and saw the movie four times opening week. That’s right, I watch 13 hours of this movie the week that it opened, and another four times before the movie left theaters. I wanted my ticket sales to add to the movies financial success.
I even remember hearing, that James Cameron had to mortgage his house and assets, I heard that he even signed a contract saying that he wouldn’t take any money until the studio made back it’s money. Now that’s dedication Folks.

@@randomhuman97 Make that 9...sort of. For "Galaxy Of Terror" he was one of the production designers as well as an assistant director. According to comments from several cast members, James took over full directing duites on more than one occasion. For "Piranha 2", it's rumored that James directed less than half of the movie. Actor Ricky ( Paull ) Goldin has since debunked that as a false rumor.
Someone told me she and her high school friends saw this movie 6 times in theaters, I wonder how much of Titanic's earnings were from repeat viewings.

I feel no matter how cheesy or dramatized this film is, Its fucking amazing what he pulled off in the 90’s with this film.
He made a near life size, almost fully identical models of the ship.
He did a very good job showing us what life would have been like onboard the Titanic.
Gave us a very very iconic soundtrack..Every actor was perfect for the role...
And so much more.
Its one of the greatest movies of all time without any doubt. Its a master piece of film making.
Nobody watches die hard or John wick for its artistic endeavours or for the morally grey multi dimensionally and psychologically intriguing characters with every scene posing as a metaphor for life and society as a whole.

My mom loved this movie she went to the movie theaters multiple times to see it she even bought the soundtrack. Which is basically 5 and 1/2 hours of music to sink a boat to.

I thought that these film was cheesy Romeo and Juliet style tragic love story.
I watched it and it was something else. Jack represents the people who we're lost in this tragedy
Rose represents the survivors who had to move on while carrying the memories of those who died.
I actually cried but not for the love story but for the people like Mr. Andrews and the people in the third class
who were simply hoping for a better life somewhere else.
Yep. As Cameron said: Titanic was a story of death & seperation. It was his artistic and creative choice. Hence, why Jack had to die. And it was Rose to carry on. No matter their lovestory.
I watched this movie in theaters as a kid and it is still one of the most memorable movie experiences I've had to this day.
TITANIC came out a couple weeks before my son was born. This was the first movie he and I watched together, so it holds a special place in my heart.

@@jamesbizs He stayed quiet the whole time. Never cried once. In fact, the people sitting next to me said they had forgotten he was there until the house lights came back up. He was a dang near perfect baby--until he hit the Terrible Threes. But that is another story.
I remember when it came out. I had to wait a couple months to see it, because of the huge crowds, and even those months later the theater was packed. At the time it was the movie that made everyone cry. And my sister was one of the preteens who were in love with Leonardo. Some years later there was a backlash against the film by critics; however, many of them had given it positive reviews when it came out. My theory was that they were embarrassed at how emotional the film had made them :p.
Yup, the movie that made men cry. Even as I was watching Titanic as a young teenager in 2004 or so, whilst my dad had seen it a couple years earlier on TV in either 1998-99, it still brought him to tears, like me as well. Even though he knew how it was gonna end.
I saw this in the theater months after its release.
During quiet parts you could hear women sobbing, even on parts that weren't sad because they had already seen the movie before and they knew what was coming.
"That really sucks, lady!" - I feel the ending really needed that line (funny to think, it would also sound like gibberish to the ear of a 1912 person)
Actually people spoke pretty much the same back then, we just stupidly think they didn't.
Glad they didn't chose that as the ending because it's kind of out of place. Like the movie's theme is serious and then in the end there was a funny scene. Im glad the ending was what we saw in theaters. It's the perfect ending ever.
I love this movie. It’s one of my favorites. I even plan to watch it on the 109th anniversary of the sinking on April 14 (I watched it on the 108th anniversary last year). Say what you want about it, I think it’s one of Cameron’s best.

When the credits came up on opening night I knew it would be a huge hit - partly by the group of teenage girls seated near me who had to “talk down” one of their friends who was crying uncontrollably about the death of Jack.

Cuz the teenage girls sitting behind me screamed "OH NO LEO'S DEAD!!!! HE'S GONE!!!"..... THEY SAID WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!!
Me and my friend went down to Hoyts Chadstone to watch a movie, and this one had just opened and had plenty of tickets on sale, so we thought "what the hell it looks good".... Three weeks later every session was sold out!!!!
Walked out and said to my friend, "Dude we just watched a goddamn masterpiece! That's probably going to equal the Oscars record of 11 wins by Ben-Hur(my favourite ever movie!)!"

When this film was released it also caused a massive avalanche of new interest in the ship, plus all the in-depth research generated by the production then made its way into the public sphere, leading to a surge in new factual books and documentaries suddenly appearing over the years afterwards. I was really into the Titanic as a kid and it was seen as a bit a bit quirky and , but then Titanic came out and for years after rarely a month went by when someone wasn't telling me something about the ship that they'd learnt or asking me a question about it. And that momentum hasn't eased up really since then, pretty amazing! Really enjoyed this review as well!

I was obsessed with this movie and Titanic in General for many years during my early teens.
Great retrospective! It was fascinating to me that it was 90% scale on the outside yet larger on the inside to account for taller/bigger people.
That scene at the end of this video... Perfect. How must it have felt for those people looking for survivors? So many dead people floating around. So many people died in that disaster. What those picking up survivors must have seen... Simply horrible.
Other than Jack's death making me bawl my eyes out the other scene that broke me was during that search and rescue when you see the mother and her baby frozen to death.😭

Yeah, so many heartbreaking scenes in this movie. Like the older couple lying together on the bed as the ship was filling with water (yes, I know they were based on a real couple, which only made the scene even more heartbreaking).
I watched this movie four times while it was in the theater. Bawled my eyes out every time.

My parents and I went to see this movie opening night, before anyone knew what happened to Jack. I was disappointed at first when the movie was present day since I thought it was a historical film. Then it went back to 1912 and I was happy. Then Jack died and I was in shock and started crying my eyes out.
This is diffinitely my favorite of all time! The movie, the characters, the actors, the special effects, the OST, the singer...all compliment with each other!!!
James is a BEAST of filmmaking no doubt, but I'm unsure if I'd want the opportunity to work with him given his film reputation as a director lol
If you are serious about the craft then you will be fine. He doesn't like "Hollywood" personalities on his set. You are there to work. Look at all the repeat actors in his films. That's all that needs to be said.

I have fond, vivid memories of when Titanic mania was sweeping the nation. I mean it was massive pop culture phenomenon.
I must've seen the film about eight times in the theaters to where I kept seeing the same trailers and the prints were literally falling apart.
It's a great film that still holds up after all these years.
I liked a lot of things about the original ending - a lot of things Rose tells the crew, and their reactions to the diamond. But the tone of the scene felt like it came out of a Die Hard movie, not the movie that preceded it.
That use of Murdoch's death in reverse to illustrate Cameron's threats was perfection!

I read that it’s actually some kind of psychological trauma response. Something about watching what you’re familiar with takes you to a safe space. You’re fully aware of the narrative/ what to expect and how it ends. A bit like a comfort blanket ☺️ Gives you a sense of knowing and control, I go through similar phases in times of stress ☺️🌼 totally normal 😅

I was 12 when Titanic came out. Even at that age I knew it was something special. So it became the first movie I ever went to see in theaters twice. The Dark Knight was the only other one I did that with
The music was and still is simply amazing by James Horner. He carries you right into the movie.

I was forced by my family to go see this, I did enjoy it but it would be years later when I started really liking it.
People talked about how Jack and Rose story makes the Titanic story more predictable, romantic, or probably symbolic, yet no one talked about the chef who literally survived the sinking Titanic all thanks to the booze he drank to keep him warm. His name is Charles Joughin.

alcohol doesn't keep the body warm. It provides a warm feeling but your core temperature plummets faster. He was simply lucky.
Drinking alcohol is probably one of the worst things you can do to keep warm.
Drinking gets you excited initially, so higher metabolism= warmth. . . But, when you inevitably get drunk, you go cold and depressed . .
what that literally kept him alive? I've only heard it makes you feel warmer but your body temperature doesn't actually change, weird that he survived lol probably just luck

Watched this last year during the second lockdown after having not seen it since 1998. A nostalgia fest for me this one. But I miss the Cameron of old, True Lies is IMO the last fun film he made.
He made only 2 movies after and only 7 films total . . . Both 2 billion dollar explosions. . .

good video. I remember reading a LOT of stuff about the movie like this video goes over, because I was looking forward to seeing it.
Damn, 1997... I thought this came out in 1999... I already loved the story of the Titanic, this movie fueled my obsession. Mostly because it introduced people I didn't know of from the story. I didn't much care for the story of Jack and Rose as much as I did the others like Molly Brown, etc.
Older now, looking back on the movie, the only parts I like really is ending. Amazing work with the sinking and having the crew return to search. It still pulls at my heartstrings and I get misty eyed.
Wonder if James Cameron got himself a seat on the "new" Titanic that's supposed to be retracing the route the Titanic took and have the same luxuries - just... modern safety precautions for obvious reasons.

Say what you want about James Cameron, but a little known fact is that he went to such great lengths to make Titanic as authentic as possible that there were actually more lives lost during the filming than there were on the actual ship 😁.

The pompous attitude of these Hollywood and Grammy people need to come back to reality. Hell, even their actors/actresses etc are fleeing towards the gaming industry for bigger paycheck doing a little voiceover. So much for "well being".

It is still a fantastic film. I went to see the IMAX rerelease in 2012 in Northern Ireland after I went to the Titanic Museum. It was a spectacle to behold. It was fantastic to see what survived from the ship and all the production material that James Cameron himself donated to the museum. On the behalf of myself and my people, you are welcome for this film.
There's no IMAX in NI.
Edit: there is an actual imax screen at the odyssey but it's been out of use since long before 2012.

Being a proper fan of Cameron's, I couldn't believe that after True Lies he was going to make Titanic, and not a new cool hardcore sci-fi epic or something. And casting pretty boy du jour DiCaprio *and* enlisting Celine f-ing Dion for the titlesong?! Oh, how I hated him for it, and for years I avoided seeing it. Then after a while (we're firmly into the DVD era now) I decided to complete my Cameron collection and finally give it a shot. Of course I was sold. It was the first and last time I doubted James Cameron. Sure, the Avatar sequels are taking their sweet time, but I'm still pretty convinced they're gonna be amazing.
My mum and I saw it the day it open in Sydney Australia, who knew it was going to be massive hit! And go on to win ten academy awards.

It’s cool seeing how much detail they put into the set and costumes, nowadays that would all just be CGI and Green Screens. It does make a big difference.

I worked the Titanic ride at Fox Studios Australia, we had the original 40 foot model of the ship which I cleaned with make-up brushes and made some repairs to. Good times.
You neglected to mention that Avatar has also had a re-release in China this month and retaken the top spot from The Avengers as the highest grossing movie ever :)

My birth city, Prince Rupert BC, was to be a rival port to Vancouver. Huge all-year harbour, a day's shipping closer to Asia ... then founder Charles Hays died on Titanic. 109 years later, Rupert has 12,000 people.
This is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time
I saw this masterpiece on this day in 1997. Titanic is still the greatest movie-going experience of my life. It was even more spectacular in IMAX 3D. There has never been a better 3D conversion.
Personally I think the love story between Jack and Rose is just as universal and timeless as Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca or Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With The Wind. All three movies have what could be considered the greatest ending in film history.

I saw it 3 times in theaters when I was in 5th grade and my sister wore the 2nd half vhs tape out. She really only rewatched the 2nd half...lol the days of vhs
The second half was the best part of the movie.
Great movie and yes, Rose let Jack die because it meant she could escape her life and live a new one.
Actually Jack committed suicide after realizing that Rose was just far to high maintenance.

Awesome movie. Still haven't seen it. :p I'm sure it'll look specatular in 4K. It's probably's Cameron's dream to work on the Avatar movies where he doesn't need to work as much with actors or stuntmen and can get the CG models to do what he wants. That being said, if the director has a solid vision in his head, cast and crew need to step it up. I wonder if overbearing directors will be going away with the more public knowledge of them. Will movies lose something as they bend toward being more relaxed and friendly or will they be better with people pitching in? All comes down to time and money, I think. Great video! Thanks!

Can you imagine being out there floating in the ocean that day in 1912? All that cold and death around you. I'm so glad this film exists. And I am even more glad it didn't get fucked over like other 90s films. Helps when the director knows what he's doing.
Got to admit, Cameron has vision and balls. Good for you dude, you see something and don't stop till you get it.

Actually, Titanic initially made 1.8 billion dollars world wide. It was 3D release that pushed it to 2.1 billion.
I saw the "alternate ending" more as a proof of concept or what to avoid, spelling everything out they thought about getting across, etc.
The door- it’s all about buoyancy. Jack literally does try to climb on and it starts to flip the door and sink it.
I really feel like Jack's status in life has a lot to do with his decision to stay in the water
Even though the film brought them great fame, both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are now embarrassed by their performances in this film. Winslet called her American accent "awful" and feels that her acting "could have been better", while DiCaprio called himself a "young punk" in this film.
During a particularly exhausting scene, requiring them to be submerged in freezing water for hours without respite, Kate Winslet whispered to Leonardo DiCaprio that it was her 21st birthday. DiCaprio playfully replied: "Sweetie, I don't care."
After finding out that she had to be naked in front of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet decided to break the ice, and when they first met, she flashed him.
(at around 2h 35 mins) In the scene where the water comes crashing into the Grand Staircase room, the film makers had only one shot at it because the entire set and furnishings were going to be destroyed.
(at around 1h 26 mins) The hands seen sketching Rose are not Leonardo DiCaprio's, but director James Cameron's. In post-production, Cameron, who is left-handed, mirror-imaged the sketching shots so the artist would appear to be right-handed, like DiCaprio.
I love this entire series!! Even if it's a movie I just HATE I still love hearing all this stuff. It's even better with movies I hate to be honest. Plus these stories hint at SOOOOOO much more stuff that's even......better....worse? If you watch it, you know which.

You know billtell I always get weird looks for hating FORREST GUMP, but I defend myself by mentioning this movie, because I know people who cant stand the sight of TITANIC, and it was another FORREST GUMP in terms of success , became a box office sensation, won best picture and makes many greatest movies ever made list, and is watched by millions of people every year, and is beloved by many all like Forrest Gump is and I know a good amount of people who can't stand it
