SUPERMAN III (1983) Revisited - Superhero Movie Review

  • If you grew up in the eighties, chances are you liked SUPERMAN III. After all, it had Superman fighting Superman! But, if you revisited it anytime since then, well, you'll know that it's a disaster. In this episode of DC FILMS REVISITED, we dig into the history behind the misbegotten entry which, to be sure, still isn't the worst film in this franchise (both SUPERGIRL and SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would be worse). We explain why Christopher Reeve didn't want to do the movie and was almost replaced by Tony Danza, how director Richard Lester saved the day, and why the movie is essentially a Richard Pryor comedy.
Do you have fond memories of SUPERMAN III? Let us know in the comments!

Say what you will about the movie, that scene where the supercomputer turned her into a cyborg scared the ish out of me as a kid. It was right up there with the Howling, American Werewolf in London, and that scene from Zombies when that lady's eye got pulled in that shattered door splinter. Sure she looked like a cross between Dr Detroit and Dr Doom but the transformation process was well done. It stills holds up today as a pretty gnarly WTF-moment.

It was nice to see how important they made Clark Kent. Superman's strength isn't from the sun, but his innate character. Clark Kent makes Superman strong. Without Clark, everything goes to shit. The public would be best served by creators who understand that.

The Chris Reeve movies follow the silver age way of thinking when it comes to the character analysis of Superman. The real persona is Superman whereas Clark is the mild mannered disguise. Kinda like how he was described in Kill Bill. They didn't switch it around til the mid 80s comic reboot. It really is toe-may-toe/toe-mah-toe with who is the public persona as they're both good people inherently

A very underrated movie and one of the better Superman movies. Essentially, Superman’s villains are Lex Luther, Mxyzptlk and Brainiac reimagined. Robert Vaughn was a great villain - a laid back and almost likable version of Lex Luther contrasting nicely with Gene Hackman’s hammy bully. Richard Pryor was great as essentially Mxyzptlk as an every-man with near magical abilities with computer science - and his being the creator of Brainiac is actually more logical than the villain’s origins in the comics. The computer monster was actually one of the best Supes villains in any film. The comedy and light tone make this basically the polar opposite of Man of Steel while being less dumb and more entertaining. This movie deserves better than its reviews and a future Superman movie could do a lot worse than to use Superman III as a template over the dark, overly serious, humorless downer Snyder-verse monstrosities.

Definitely prefer it to the 4th.
Over the years, the second film feels more and more like the mashup production it is.
I don’t hate it at all, I love stuff in it- but it doesn’t have enough to bring me back again and again.
    (Outside of watching Zod clips)
The 3rd is at least more concise with what it’s doing.
It’s got an interesting concept with Superman being a jerk.
Chris Reeve is obviously having a lot of fun.
It’s actually my favorite performance of his in the series. He feels comfortable in the roles, he gets to play Superman and Clark in a variety of ways.
I like his scenes with Annette O’Toole in Smallville.
I like Richard Pryor, even when it’s not his A material.
His inclusion is so cynical and insane, but it somehow works for me.
Anything bad in the movie is at least weird and funny.
    I’m not saying it’s under-appreciated, exactly.

Reeve absolutely dyed his hair for this film. In the picnic scene, his growing brown roots couldn’t be more obvious.
Jimmy Olsen never went to Smallville after he broke his leg.
Lana and Brad weren’t dating in this movie. He was pursuing her and she was avoiding him.
Lana was not Clark’s high school sweetheart. They never dated.
I have to wonder if you watched the movie before making this video.
Superman III is one of my favorite guilty pleasure films!

For me being a kid and born in 79, I must have watched it when I was about 7 years old for the first time and the scene where Kent fights evil superman blew me away, too the point where I had this down as my favourite Superman move. Now as an adult I have rewatched all the Superman films many times since and I can now see why critics panned this film as it set away from the first 2 and is more of a comedy but still enjoy watching it.👍

Superman 3 happens to be my favorite, yes it has some issues with continuity. Overall I like the story and Richard Pryor is just so funny. I agree it is more of a spin-off than a 3rd chapter.

The scene where Superman stops the chemical plant fire by dropping part of a frozen lake on it was very well done and truly belongs as part of the Superman films of this era, even if a lot of the rest of the film does not.

This was the first Superman movie I ever saw(when I was 9 years old), and I remember wondering later why all the critics were giving it bad reviews, because I can tell you that I was certainly in no way disappointed by it myself! In fact, it was the most thrilling movie experience I ever had until seeing "Return of the Jedi" a few weeks later.
Perhaps it isn't quite as good(or as important to the series) as the first two movies, but so what? It still gets the job done, and I would take it over any of today's "Man of Steel" movies any day of the week!

  • @Supremmo

Hmmmmm? Looking back at Superman III they should’ve brought in Bizzaro as a villain and Toyman. Brainiac would’ve been good as a main villain too. I would’ve saved Mr Mxyzlptk for part 4.

  • @user-qg3fr6lo7r
    @user-qg3fr6lo7r Před 7 měsíci

"Brainiac" would have been the ideal choice for "Superman 3". Unfortunately, all
they gave us was Richard Pryer. To be fair, although not near as strong as the 1st
two Superman films, "Superman 3" did have some strong moments. Notably, the
fire at the plant and, of coarse, the battle between Superman and Clark. Naturally,
the best thing of all was the screen being graced, once again, by the greatest
live-action Superman of all-time, Christopher Reeve.

I loved it as a child, I loved them all only to realise as I got older that none of the movies matched the first! But 3 and 4 are definitely fun to watch, they are entertaining!
As a kid I never understood why there was a picture of young Christopher reeve (Clarke Kent) hanging in the school at the reunion when we had seen a teenage Kent in the first movie! Always annoyed me for some reason 😏🥴

Christopher Reeve IS Superman. Watch him as Clark Kent trying to take the elevator. It felt real, as if he were indeed a clumsy but good natured person. Then when he’s Superman, he’s charming, confident and manly. Brilliant.
And then you have Zack Snyder, who doesn’t understand the character and made terrible movies about him.

  • @matthewstoneback9

I saw the movie when it came out the summer before I went into high school. I have never seen it again since. In comic books or on television episodes, you can have one issue or episode that is a change-of-pace. With blockbuster tentpole movies, that's not really an option.

I kind of agree that his relationship with Lois had run its course but more broadly, his romantic relationship with “mortal” women had done so.
    That’s what happened in II.
So, having him move from one mortal woman to another, makes no sense.
It’s kind of like having Superman Returns pick up where Superman II left off.
Sure, it makes fantastic thematic sense but II ended with Superman saying he’d never leave “us”, again. But in Returns he returned after being gone for about 5 years.

As a kid, I loved Superman 3. I was too young to know who Pryor was, but I thought he was funny. I loved the scene where he skied down the skyscraper, and onto the street. Computers were new, and having Pryor find a loophole to skim enough $$$$ to buy a Ferrari was entertaining.
