    I like the thumbnail image you've chosen. Ted Nasmith's image of Minas Tirith here is one of the few that actually follows the book description, where the city is white but the outermost wall is made of the same impregnable black stone used at Orthanc Tower.

    No, methinks the greatest takeaway from this cautionary tale is fact that pride goeth before in fall. The self-righteous hubris, presumption and haughtiness of the Numenoreans-turned-colonizers led them to forsake the old path of peace and learning, even the worship of The One, and take up the yoke of unsatiated lust for that which was never designed for them. These truths are self evident no matter where a poeple take up their abode.
    Majestically written, reverently read! Great recording!

      @DanIel-fl1vc  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes you are partly right, they did colonize middle earth and became prideful. But that's not ultimately what caused their downfall. They looked at valinor much in the same way middle easterners, south Americans and Africans look at Europe and the US today. Imagined there was something special about the land. Not realizing that it's the people that live there that hallowed it and made it into what it is.
      They decided to migrate for better economic opportunities and then god sunk their island. If that's not anti migration I don't know what is. But yes, their pride no doubt contributed to what made them set sail in the first place.

    • @rahilario
      @rahilario Před 2 lety +3

      Precisely. Nowhere did Tolkien's message suggest that travel and migration is the root of conflict. It was Melkor Morgoth and his seeds of evil.
      Thank you also for mentioning the DOWNFALL of Numenor. Can't speak of their glory without speaking of their colonizing Middle-earth and their tyranny. For example, the descendants of Haleth's people (Dunlendings) were terrorized by the Numenoreans. They deserved better from their former allies and kin.

The Numenoreans were given long life spans and a beautiful island but over time they wanted more and were not happy with their gifts. Their pride coupled with their fear of death is what led them down this dark path. They misunderstood what Valinor was. They thought it was a place that granted immortality to any who lived or visited there like the Eldar. I find it super interesting that this tale, which was clearly written after the Island was sunk, refers to the Numenorians as "Kings among Men." Why would it describe the people who were, according to this text, opposed to the evil Numenor and wiser with such an authoritative title?
    Were the Elf friends maybe not so clear of the 'evil' Imperial and 'we are better than anyone else' mindset that brought the doom to the Island as they liked to believe? It says Amadil and Ar-Pharazon were friends at first, and all things hint that they grew close during the "numerous wars" in Middle earth. Or was the true meaning lost through the translation from Quenya to Westron to English?
    It's also funny that this text refers to Valinor as a realm that was untouched by evil. We know that this is not true at all.
