Birds of Prey - The Impostor Deadpool Jack Sparrow | Anatomy Of A Failure

  • Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Birds of Prey movie is the first DC film of the new decade, and by the quality of it it seems DC is up to its old habits a'la Suicide Squad/Batman v Supeman/Justice League. But the interesting thing about Birds of Prey's failure is that its pretty much a copy paste of other successful movies: Pirates of the Caribbean and Deadpool. The character of Harley Quinn is a straight ripoff of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, whereas the narrative and the wonky world of Birds of Prey is a straight ripoff of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. But despite copying cinematic greats, Birds of Prey still manages to fail, because it completely misses the point of what makes Pirates and Deadpool great. So, in today's episode of Anatomy of a Failure, lets see how that happened and how DC/DCEU looks once again to be taking a backseat to Marvel/MCU.

When the procedure leaves him with advanced healing powers and a disfigured face, he reinvents himself as a wisecracking, spandex-clad antihero known as Deadpool, and seeks revenge on those responsible. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Director Gore Verbinski and the crew set sail once again for this, the third chapter in the swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is hopelessly trapped in Davy Jones' locker after a harrowing encounter with the dreaded Kracken, and now Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) must align themselves with the nefarious Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) if they hold out any hope of saving their old friend from a fate worse than death. The East India Trading Company and its fearsome leader, Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), have taken control of the ghostly Flying Dutchman and its captain, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), and now the baleful Admiral Norrington (Jack Davenport) has taken the helm in a relentless bid to destroy every pirate ship in his path and bring the Age of Piracy to a violent close. Meanwhile, Will, Elizabeth, and Captain Barbossa navigate treacherous waters and face bitter betrayal as they set sail to gather the only army that can stand up to Beckett -- The Nine Lords of the Brethren Court. But Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the lords, and as long as he's stuck in Davy Jones' locker, Beckett and his nefarious armada are sure to emerge victorious. There's still hope, however, if the heroic team that includes Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), Pintel (Lee Arenberg), and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) can reach exotic Singapore and convince vulpine pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) to provide them with charts and a ship. But even the powerful Brethren Court may need a bit of help from volatile sea goddess Calypso in order to weather the coming storm. With the entire future of the pirate way at stake, everyone will be forced to choose sides while drifting precariously to the edge of the earth for one final, spectacular battle.

It's a unique, personal villain motivation that it's actually refreshing. Most of the time people just write villains that they just want to be powerful or something (ala theatrical Birds of Prey). Reaper Z erm yes they have, the whole reason we don’t have the classic overly masculine action hero nowadays is because it’s a pretty bland boring character and audiences have grown beyond that. We want flaws and depth in all characters. The problem some women led films make these days in removing the flaws and giving us more of the ‘toxic masculinity’ characteristics in them ironically. However as you saw in this video essay that isn’t the problem with this film and in fact the opposite, with one of the big problems being that they actually didn’t show her strengths/motivations enough and made a weak shell of a character.

Making him the main character took away all of his charm and why he stood out so much in the first place, Harly Quinn was Sparrow as the main character.

It's the kind of character that even if you managed to capture him, you'd have to go through hell to keep him locked up.
Same thing with Harley. Her overall personality is that she does get the short end of the sticks sometimes, but you better believe it that she ain't gonna play the _damsel in distress_ game and that you WILL get your ass kicked. It's like trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

@@dusathemaid Actually, this Harley DOESN'T kick ass in combat. Yes, she wins every fight she's in, but it's yet another example of where this movie took shortcuts. The actresses VERY OBVIOUSLY don't know how to fight in the slightest degree and the stuntmen are directed to act as if each blow strikes with the force of ten men, even if it's from six feet away and can't possibly hit. Even for the first Charlie's Angel's reboot (the semi-good one) the actresses trained for literally three months straight. It's obvious in this movie they were just told to act tough and win. So instead of giving the impression that she's a keen and slippery fighter, we just come to understand that all women are strong and all men are pathetic. It doesn't work, like so many other things.

She PRESENTS herself as slutty bimbo moron because it gets her a massive edge over everyone else. She is in truth extremely capable and intelligent, but she plays The Fool and The Rake as characters to lessen her open threat. Yeah when you said that bit about the ending they rewrote it kinda saddened me. They had this amazing character of a villain, with perfectly realistic motivations, and scrapped it off for the most cliched thing ever. And whats worse is that I can very clearly imagine the executive producer being like "ohh no we cant use his sexuality against him, that would be bad lgtb representation". When instead it could have been veeeeery easy to manage. Simply make the bad guy fail to recover the pictures, and force him to embrace his sexuality and let the world know his secret so he can *defeat* Harley. Not only it makes for a pretty darn good climax, taking harley's advantage over him with the pictures, but also completely cements the character as a 3 dimensional being capable of growing.

I personally loved Harleys depiction in the Birds of Prey Movie. It was very close to the character that was shown in her solo comic series (which is also set in a post Harley-Joker-Breakup Scenario). The hole point of her character there was, that she did what she wanted, when she wanted without having to explain herself to anyone... So the comic Version (which I assume to be the source material for Birds of Prey) was basically a chaos queen with a lot of dumb luck. Many depictions of Harley Quin show her stumbling through events and somehow not dying... The point of Birds of Prey was to show how she learned, that she needs her own agency and can't rely on men... Which is exactly why she tries to replace the Joker with Roman for the first 2/3 of it...
And the fact that Roman fits Harleys world best is quite unsurprising: both of there characters motivation, agency, etc. relys heavyly on them being crazy!
The Problem with the Birds of Prey was not, that there Story was told by Harley, but that they weren't the actual Birds of Prey (replacing Oracle with Montoya was a choice... ... ...) so the biggest issue of the movie is the title... It's called "Birds of Prey" without an focus on the Birds of Prey and without the hole team present...
But none of this makes it a good or a bad movie. I'd say it's an enjoyable movie and a great Harley Quin adaptation!
(I do agree, that it would have been a better movie if the McGuffin had been naked pictures of the villain)

However, because she was so preoccupied with that, she lacks the right social skills. This is proven when she loses her composure in front of Harley and others when trying to sound tough. She even awkwardly practices her own badass one liners in the mirror. It's quite interesting seeing a strong, determined woman be sort of the awkward one in a group. It's something different that just didn't get enough screentime.

It could been a good movie if they showed the abusive relationship of Harley Quinn and the Joker, which leads to the break up and than makes her fight against the Joker or Batman together with Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
I mean if it plays shortly after Suicide Squad the Break up doesn’t make sense since Joker breaks Harley free, kills people who insults her and shows affection to her. Also Suicide Squads Harley Quinn is introduced as one of the murderers of Robin, so why doesn’t she just kill the girl?
